I just wanted to say thank you for making this series of videos. They among others were filled with invaluable information. For my exploror engine rebuild. I have never built an engine before and It took me far too long to get the engine done. But now that it's in the Fox and running smooth, I couldnt be happier. Now i just have to break her in.
I have watched a ton of engine rebuild videos in preparation for rebuilding my 302 and you are now my official source for SBF videos haha. 350s here and LS there but hard to find GOOD ford videos, so thank you for such great, knowledgeable and easy to follow content! I will be going through all your vids in time, keep up the great work! any SBF specific rebuild books I should consider getting off amazon?
Hey thanks! And indeed there is! Check out my engine build walk through playlists. Both series I introduce a book I used when I just started. It's an awesome read for someone who hasn't gone through it themselves yet !
You seem to love those 302w engine's,here in australia we have more cleveland's than anything else,i suppose you know we have the 302 cleveland as well, keep up your video's i like them.
@thunderhead I have an 1986 lincoln continental mark VII and it has 83,000 miles on her..i trusted thr guy who sold me the car said it ran fine..so i drove it....well i got on the e way and it started somking from the engine bay area and it was whiteish smoke..and from the tail pipe it was a blackish blue smoke..i put water in. Her and it cooled down and the engine light came off and she drove fine..i drove her agin the next day and she turned off at a intersection and was trying to turn over but wouldnt so i walked to pepboys and put 2 quarts oil in this 5.0 engine and she turned over immediately...she also turns ofg when i slowdown or come to a stop....what should i do and what do you think
I just had to replace my harmonic balancer pulley on my 302 off of my 1978 ford f100 it was making a knocking noise and my first thought was the worst thought I had rod knock but further expection gave me the good news it was just a harmonic balancer
Notice this is the 1986 5.0 one year only without valve relief pistons so a higher lift cam is a not an option because of that also the one year E6 heads suck on a performance build the E7's replaced them 1987 and the pistons now have valve reliefs.
i have a video series on budget rebuilding the small block ford engine - there i detail how you can safely go about it on a budget. also, you can always take it into a machine shop and have it boiled.
Or you can get a 120L plastic tub and a few 1kg bottles of Caustic Soda (Available at any grocery store) and then chuck the block in it for 24 or 48 hours... For less than $50 it comes out like new... Just did mine. Just don't put aluminium in it.
Great video as always. I have a 69 Fairlane/Torino 302 that came in my Bronco when I bought it, it ran damn good before I took the bronco apart to restore it. The only problem I had was it leaked a little oil from around the pan and had a lifter tick(I am assuming from it sitting). I'm assuming it was rebuilt about the same time the transmission was in 2006 which they painted on the C4. I know it has a cam in it because it has the newer 351w firing order. So the plan is right now to just reseal it with new gaskets. I think I am going to at least put a new timing chain on it. Not sure on the oil pump, but what brands do you recommend. I'm looking at the ford performance ones, but are they really worth the higher cost $120 vs 40 or 50 for comp cams? Difference between steel and iron gears for the timing set? Thanks. Nathan
sounds like it must have a cam in it. i think the steel gears are for the higher spring lb stuff. you will be just fine if you run a cloyes TRUE double roller. id replace the oil pump while i was there - melling is a good brand. dont put in the high volume. do you have guide plates under the valve covers?
im not talking about the tick, that surely is a lifter from sitting. but if the valve geomtry is wronge, the valve guides wear real quick. just give her the ol marker valve stem check. but if its a stock cam = no lope, its probably just fine.
Hi there I have Ford F-100 1978 the motor 302 I am get gas in block I smell gas in my oil I and I have holly carburetor and have new fuel pump so we’re do I turn motor to to put the fuel to put new pump on to
im not sure why ford did this, but the truck engines have a roller prepped block with a flat tappet cam up until 94 for whatever reason. so your block is a roller unit with the roller hold down bosses and raised lifter bores. i also would believe it to be the original.
Great content man! I was gifted a 1969 Ford f100 302 V8 C6 auto tranny. I’m gonna pull the engine. I would love to put all sorts of goodies to bump the performance and just make the engine last that much longer. However I’m on a budget and just want it to run right with no leaks internally or externally. What would you recommend changing most? I’m doing valve cover, oil pan, tranny, and carb gaskets so far.
There were 2 Ford engine plants in the 1960's. One in Cleveland Ohio, the other in Windsor Ontario Canada. (near Detroit ). From what I have read online, the small block fords 221.260 289, were first made in Cleveland only, then the 289 , and 302's were made in Windsor starting in 65, 66, or so. But The only engine ford called Windsor was the 351 Windsor.
Thunderhead is Thunderstruck you just can't beat a Ford motor built right Chevy are pure garbage Dodge pretty damn good it's nice to see a Ford men working on a Ford engine or for few and in between if you read this have a great day and a better night my friend take care buddy
+Robert Cowan not true at all. This is a misconception made popular by Eric the car guy. Observe the puller design for one, and for two - that’s how it pulls straight out. You well never mess up a thread using the puller kit properly. Period. Search Thunderhead289 harmonic balancer. Iv done this many times on camera
hey thunderhead289 ur video,s are great. I have a question for u. I have owned several 302 motors. I remember reading in 1 of ur videos u wrote u like the 289 better .I believe u said it was a better balanced motor. is it just the 28oz crank u prefer? or is it how it winds up faster?i have alaways wanted to build a 289.i hear stories from old timers around my way ,but I have not personally owned 1. ur input would be appreciated.

Great video! Thanks for taking your time…I don’t know why some people go so fast that it hard to follow..thank you sir!
Doing the head gasket on my Foxbody and this was super helpful. Thanks

E Gibson can i drop a 5.0 from a 96 explorer into a 2000 mustang gt and would it be worth it
ThunderHead289 can i drop a 5.0 from a 96 explorer into a mustang gt 2000
that you cannot do, you can always work over the wiring, but the k member on the 99 and up units will not work with that engine!!
WOW sweet old school Offenhauser intake! You don’t see those every day anymore.
You seem to love those 302w engine's,here in australia we have more cleveland's than anything else,i suppose you know we have the 302 cleveland as well, keep up your video's i like them.
331sbf all the u.s built 302's were Windsor engines the only Cleveland we ever got was the 351
Cleveland's are great!
i belive that what fell from the sky in roswell was actualy a prototype cleveland alloy manifold, which was secrectly given to glidden.
351C are best
thanks for posting this . im tearing down a 351w and this is very helpful
I have one of these and the video really helped thanks
Offenhauser is a great intake especially the 360 model
3:37 i had an idea... piano wire/music wire 😁👍
I need a 302w and a 351w. If I had those, no matter the condition I’d be in heaven.
Positive Negative I got both of them sitting I. My garage rebuilt waiting to be installed lol
Great Job Luke!

What size is that balancer bolt I got an 82 mustang gt 302 high ouput engine and can’t figure the size of it
I just had to replace my harmonic balancer pulley on my 302 off of my 1978 ford f100 it was making a knocking noise and my first thought was the worst thought I had rod knock but further expection gave me the good news it was just a harmonic balancer
Ok
I have a 302 1995 h.o it runs like shit but I dunno what’s wrong with it any ideas?starts ok but runs poorly sputtering and shutting off.
have you ever seen a cleaner, more neat shop....
is this the E5AE C3B?
Notice this is the 1986 5.0 one year only without valve relief pistons so a higher lift cam is a not an option because of that also the one year E6 heads suck on a performance build the E7's replaced them 1987 and the pistons now have valve reliefs.
@thunderhead
how did you clean the engine after it was dissasembled?
i have a video series on budget rebuilding the small block ford engine - there i detail how you can safely go about it on a budget. also, you can always take it into a machine shop and have it boiled.

No, no guide plates. Why? Thanks for the help.
id check your pushrod geometry then. people always put in cams and then do not account for the changes in the valve springs.
Well I forgot to mention it is just on one cylinder. Sorry
im not talking about the tick, that surely is a lifter from sitting. but if the valve geomtry is wronge, the valve guides wear real quick. just give her the ol marker valve stem check.
but if its a stock cam = no lope, its probably just fine.
There were a bunch of numbers there, what year is this? Is it a 74?
How do you get your motors? do you recommend something like a pick a part or buy them on craigslist?
I usually get them off of craigslist. I shoot for untouched fuel injected units. Best bet in getting one that is savable.
Hi there I have Ford F-100 1978 the motor 302 I am get gas in block I smell gas in my oil I and I have holly carburetor and have new fuel pump so we’re do I turn motor to to put the fuel to put new pump on to
Maybe it is runnin too rich? What cfm carb? Also possible rings worn gas goes by them and gets in the oil
those valve covers look accurate for 86 but a blue oil pan?
It’s from an 86 wagon.
Carb converted it and had it in my 74 f100 for a temporary engine. Pan was to make it work for the f100 crossmember
my 87 302 out of my f150 is a flat tappett why is this?
im not sure why ford did this, but the truck engines have a roller prepped block with a flat tappet cam up until 94 for whatever reason. so your block is a roller unit with the roller hold down bosses and raised lifter bores. i also would believe it to be the original.
ThunderHead289 yes it is the original
a roller cam and lifters with the holddown and dog bones can be purchased and directly installed into your engine if you so wish to do so.
ThunderHead289 right on i thought so it's got the two holes in the valley , but it's good to know for sure enjoy the videos

doin a nice job
What does it mean is its a winsor engine or Cleveland ?
It's a series of engines. The name comes from the city they were originally produced.
There were 2 Ford engine plants in the 1960's. One in Cleveland Ohio, the other in Windsor Ontario Canada. (near Detroit ). Google my friend
That intake came off easy because its already been replaced. lol.
89 f150 302 fuel injected. Is it normal to use a quart of oil between oil changes?

PULL BALANCER BOLT, REMOVE WASHER,REINSTALL BOLT THEN PULL BALANCER OR YOU,LL MESS CRANK SNOUT UP

When i rebuild an engine i replace EVERYTHING, thats why its called an ENGINE REBUILD....................
Cry. I actually call this a true overhaul. But overhaul won’t get anyone clicking now will it.
My friend you can do this so much faster with electric impact tools. like Snap-on, Matco even Dewalt.
For sure! But not everyone has those! I try to make everything and do everything so the most ill equipped user can wrench!
+ThunderHead289 I see, just being an auto tech myself for 20+ years, I see ya doing it the hard way. Well nice video either way...
+The Ex-One show If I was an actual mechanic, I'd probably be using some! Just haven't forked over the bread for them!

Check out “I Do Cars", he’ll show you how to quickly and efficiently disassemble an engine.
Check out thunderhead289, he doesn't care about other youtubers.
@@ThunderHead289 His loss. He might learn something to his benefit. As for me, I don’t care one way or the other.
