- For the best sonos settings in your setup, we are looking at every single setting available and measured for Sonos to tweak the sounds to your liking. I'd also recommend my best sonos setup for the Sonos Arc & Sub Gen 3. We cover Trueplay, Bass EQ, Treble EQ, Loudness, Night Sound, Speech Enhancement and Sub levels, even down to Surround settings. Every single setting explored and measured with REW software using an UMIK-1 USB mic through a 20Hz - 20KHz frequency sweep.
Now you know exactly what each setting does to shape the sound to your liking.

Mr. Pee your channel has been a true lifesaver....no one has gone as in depth as you in detailing the finer details and inner workings of the Sonos line up....you have helped the community immensely.
I honestly didn't think this was going to sound good, but Omg it sounds amazing! Really clear! Thank you. 😊
Peter... you definitely bring this materal to life. Generally, I have to force myself to sit through a tech lec... even when I need to know what's what... Not so with your descriptions. You are a natural teacher... your presentation is unhurried, clear, and methodical. IMHO: Including a content preview with quick navigation is very helpful.
Hi alan! Thanks for your very generous feedback! I really appreciate it. And ok! I will put in a content preview with clickable links and segments for my longer videos as well as heavier tech topics or reviews.
Was finally able to grab an ARC and SUB (Gen 3).....should be here in a week....can't wait to try these settings!
Stunning video again! Love the objective frequency response graphs against all the settings.
Your kind words are much appreciated!
Very well done, the level of detail you go into is impressive...some of the few youtube videos I watch from beginning to end.
Wow, thanks for the patience! I really try to keep videos short but there is a lot to go into!
Peter - I used your settings.
Noticeable difference for the better. Thank you sir !
Great to hear that it works for you!
Thank you so much for sharing this measured Sonos settings Peter, it helped me a lot and i'm very satisfied with almost the same settings on my playbase, after a lot of testing and adjusting. Regards from the Netherlands, Danny
Hi Danny! This is the reason why I do this! I am happy that it has helped you!
Best Sonos information anywhere. Just subscribed. Keep up the good work.
Welcome aboard! Thanks for the support!
"Without data, your just another person with an opinion".... I came here to watch a video on surround sound. I'll leave this video with great surround sound advice and an absolutely amazing proverb!!!
Hello peter thnak you so much i followed your advice or settings and it really sounds great i thought at first it will lose bass but no!!it makes the whole sound now even better and proportion again thank you so much and keep up the good work..waiting for new news from you if ever SONOS will make an update for their devices 👏👏👏
This was so detailed and on point andakes you get a better understanding of your own personal setup for your home. Looking for the best flat sound so everything is on par and equal is hard to do and most plp won't touch settings and just stick with default. Thanks for your input I'm going to try your setup for my own system at home. 😎🙌🏽
I appreciate your work and love your channel Peter! , great job as always
Many thanks!
Can’t wait to try your settings. Mine arriving this week
Oh cool! You must be feeling excited.
Signed up, enjoy your points and keep up the good work
Cool! Thank you!
Thanks mate. Great Video!
Always a great job 👍 you answer so many questions.
Glad you think so!
Great job !
Very interesting. Thank you.
Excellent explained. THANK YOU.
Glad it was helpful!
Just set up the ARC and SUB....even without TruePlay they sound AMAZING!!!! The sound stage is HUGE....and even without rears it throws sound behind me....very impressed.
Yes. The soundstage size is phenomenal. When you do trueplay you’ll be wondering how come the trueplay tones are coming from around the sides and behind you.
Gotta give you credit for the no frills, no bullshit approach. I'm so sick of seeing videos/ "reviewers" glossing over real testing for gimmicks and hyperbole. Well done 😊.
Thanks for the compliment [insert Name Here] !
Thanks for helping me!
Excellent video
Would love to see an update that includes height! You have been my go to for Sonos tips and tricks. Thanks Peter!
Awesome vid! Great work! I’ve searching for an in-depth video on Sonos audio settings.
Glad you found it useful!
Thanks for the excellent research you do Peter, so good to have you as a benchmark. I’ve tried your settings on my setup. Arc, gen3 sub and two play one surrounds. I like your treble settings, it does remove the tinny harshness from the Arc. I can’t reduce any of my sub settings into the negatives though. I must admit I like to feel the bass punch. My audio/vid listening room is an unusual shape, I’ve used trueplay to even out the sound and it has worked a treat. Moving the sub to various locations I’ve found your suggestion, up front has worked the best. I’ve stood mine up facing into the room. Thanks again for your excellent videos.
Yes not all my recommendations will work for different rooms. In your case the bass might be absorbed and reflected differently. Take my base recommendations and tweak from there.
Has been surprising listening to music thru the Sonos setup I have. The variety of file quality when listening on Spotify is vast. I’ve listened to songs, same recording of same song but just a diff album. The bass difference has been the standout. I’d like to be able to choose when the sub picks up the bass frequencies. I’d love Sonos to allow us to play with this setting.
Hello. What are your settings for your system?
Great videos and thanks for explaining a lot of unpopular nuances of the sound settings. Is it possible to make a video on best settings for Sonos Five for listening to electronic music?
Exactly what I was just wondering.... What is the best settings. Thank you for everything you do.
It will probably depend on your room thought. So, play around with it and find what sounds good to you. If you are one of those experiencing the metallic sound just turn down the treble until it’s good. It might affect the mids a but thought
Not going to lie i thought you were fkn mad when I saw your settings. As a massive bass junkie I was extremely skeptical but I tried your settings and wow was I surprised with the clarity and still got my bass fix! Currently running an arc, sub gen 2 and 2 X play 3s.
Also placed my arc like you suggested too :)
Cheers from Melbourne, Australia
Hello from Singapore! I thought I might get such reactions too. Cos I just didn't want to you know... reduce the bass? But it does help to divert the power to where it is better served, and the bass is cleaned up in the process given that it doesn't have to overwork itself.
Thanks for tip. Will try out.
I’ve ordered the HDFury Arcana to overcome the earc problem as my TV only has ARC HDMI. Will share if it works.
Peter, your work is to the max and perfect, and i love it. No one has gone in depth as you do in detail. Love your work Peter, really love it...!!!
Thank you John! It really motivates me when people like you show appreciation as such. Thank you!
Very thorough video, thank you very much! Interested in your bass settings. I was scared to touch bass through fear of destroying the lower end. I have my sub level at -5 but may experiment with adjusting bass and just see what my ears feel about it. Many thanks!
I have to set mine at -4 because the bass is too powerful.
You are good bro!
Great ... I hope in the future you do the same configuration for the Beam bar! Congrats for your channel!
Oh cool. I will take note of your idea and try to find time for it.
Thank you! Your channel and videos are perfect for the Sonos audiophile :) would you say your recommendations have changed for settings since uploading this video?
For my own personal use case, I find them to be still consistently neutral. You might be able to set it a bit hotter and boost the bass a bit more but I prefer it more neutral.
Hi Peter, I wonder if you are an engineer 😀. Very well done and one reason I bought Sonos is your technically detailed review that convinced me about Sonos. I have used a variety of sound systems including ones for stage performance, I was leaning a lot towards Bose but I think Sonos has integrated the system very well. The clean bass coming from Sonos sub saves me some fight with neighbors as well. Keep up your good work!
Thanks
Nah, I am not an engineer but I do get very interested with empirical data and finding out exactly how things work.
Dear Peter, this was great! I just upgraded my SONOS Beam to Sonos Arc a couple of days ago. One of the main reasons I did so is to get better voice on TV and movies. At age 66 I need all the help I can get lol. Last night I watched a recent 4k movie with Dolby Atmos and the voice enhancement worked great. This morning I played some music from Tidal into the Arc via my Roku TV. I immediately noticed the metallic treble. I turned off voice enhancement which helped but the treble was still awful. Looking forward to trying your settings in the morning!
Hope you had some improvements from there!
@@PeterPee It is so much better, thanks to you!
Great video Peter am new to your channel and I like your videos I didn't quite understand everything but am very interested in the Sonos eco system. So just to be clear if I have a TV with Arc signal I can get Dolby atmos with the Sonos Arc ?
Great video. Would you be able to do one for an Arc and surrounds setup minus the sub? Thanks.
Nice video! Can you make a same video with the Beam, 2 play 1’s and the sub. Thanks a lot!!
Hi Peter.. thank you so much for your videos.. very educational! Have you made a similar comparison video using the Sonos Beam instead of the ARC? (Using Beam, Sub (Gen 3), and 2 Ones for rear).
Not yet! That is a good suggestion but it will take time. I am quite tied up with work nowadays but I'd be sure to queue up that video!
Thank you Peter for doing such amazing work I am subscribed and I like and watched most of all your videos really appreciate that as I am looking into the Sonos ecosystem if you had to choose one of the two options for a surround system with Atmos would you go with the arc +2 Sonos fives or the ark with the sub GEN three please advise I am looking to help out in the Patreon great work again
Woah! Very timely question. I was testing around last night and I came to a strange conclusion that I didn’t expect.
I found that the frequency response looked better for the arc with Sonos fives than the arc with sub! I was completely taken by surprise and didn’t expect that.
But before you take that as the truth, please hang around while I conclude that testing and derive some conclusions from that test. It’s counter intuitive.
Great video Peter, thanks. I’ve just setup an arc and Sonos sub gen 3. The arc is wall mounted and sub is about a meter away from us in the corner of the room. We’ve noticed on certain streams (live tv or Netflix) that the sub is playing audio dialogue and is quite distracting. Any way to stop that or ensure it sticks to lower frequency sounds? Settings are as per this video. Many thanks.
Thank you for this video. I also have an Arc plus a Gen 3 Sub. I made the same adjustments you listed for your configuration. The changes were remarkable. I really found your explanation of the various setting to be very informative and will be referenced when I start making the small adjustments. Please, keep up the good work.
I am so glad that it has helped! Our placement of the speakers and rooms differ so there is definitely a need to adjust somewhat. I’m just trying to provide some base configurations fo remove something issues and you can tweak to your preference and room from there.
@@PeterPee Your videos are very helpful. I am now waiting on an update from Sonos for the S2 app. It seems the Trueplay software for the iPad I have is "not finished" yet; I am expecting it to be ready by February 30th.
Yes. For ipad still no go. I just checked again as recently as an hour ago while doing testing for Trueplay and iOS device dependency.
Do any of you guys know if there’s a way to have a Sonos surround system respect the original mix of the content? I.e. have it present mono content as mono, stereo as stereo, without upmixing to send audio to the surrounds? I know I can turn off the surround channels, but would rather have the system do this automatically. Love this channel, keep up the good work!
So Trueplay is only available when the Arc is paired with Sub? I just bought Arc and I will be using it without the woofer. Do these setting apply to my situation as well? Thank you so much for your amazing effort to provide such invaluable information.
Great work as always! A quick question... Do you use these settings before or after you have carried out Truplay?
I use them BEFORE trueplay. I do it this way for the video as trueplay affects different rooms/users differently. But for your use, you can apply them AFTER trueplay to see if it helps. When you do Trueplay, it won't apply any of the settings.
@@PeterPee thanks. So in real world it is better to adjust EQ AFTER Truplay?
Great channel, and very informative videos.
I have a question in regards to the Sonos Arc.
I get different outputs on about my sound in Sonos app depending on setting on Apple TV / LG CX
what’s the best output for the arc?
Setup is the following: APPLE 4K TV+LG CX+Sonos arc +sub+surround
Different output formats on Sonos app that I get when playing DD 5.1 on Netflix (not atmos content ) is :
Dolby multichannel 5.1 vs Dolby Digital 5.1 vs Multichannel 7.1
What’s is the best/right output?
Great video!! Are you able to do some similar with the Beam? Maybe even a comparison of arc+sub and beam+sub?
Cool. I’ve received that request. I can do it but I really need to clear my video queue now! Thank you for your great suggestion!
Another amazing video. Thank you! Would you use those same settings for music playback? Also, I’d be curious to know what your surround settings would be. Look forward to the next one! Btw when I have the screen go black while watching tv (with Bravia logo showing up) and the sound still on... I turn the entire system off and then on again, it seems to help. Wonder why.
For surrounds I didn’t recommend as it differs too much from placement. What I set them to is +3 for tv and 0 for music. I also have it set to ambient for music.
When I get my Sonos fives in, I will set them to full. Now I’m using the play:3 for surround.
For the screen blanking out, it is almost always a hdmi handshaking issue. Either cable or hdmi board. And from what I’m hearing from various feedback, it’s affecting Sony TVs. I know no one wants to take responsibility for such connectivity issues since there’s always another party to point to, but empirically speaking, on this issue, it’s Sony.
Peter Pee thank you! Very logical response. And you are correct. Both parties are pointing the fingers at each other. When there is a solution I will let you know. In case it interests you. Best videos! Keep up the amazing work.
Will you be doing any test with a complete surround sound? I have play 3’s and it sounds great. Nobody has done test with a complete surround sound. Hopefully you can make this happen. Your doing a great job. Keep up the good work.
Hey, yes thanks. Check out my later videos. I have the arc setup in a full surround test with play:3s as surround and sub.
Peter I have been rocking with your settings exactly and they have sounded great!
But I have just added 2 Sonos Ones as rear speakers. I'm wondering if you recommend running Trueplay again or is there no need? Thanks!
I'd say you do your trueplay again. For home theatre setup, trueplay also measures the distance of the sound and adjusts for delays and ensure sound is in phase. Especially for surround and subs.
I just ordered arc + sub, is it recommend to run trueplay right after I hook up the arc or wait until the sub is set up as well?
Hi there sir so i just bought the Sonos Arc with Sonos Sub Gen 3 after watching your good presentation on sonos products. I was just wondering for a small bedroom like mine , whats the best setting you think is ?
I’ve setted just like your settings but i think my bedroom is way smaller than your theater room and the celling is not that tall.
I know you can’t give me the exact best measurements but i just want to know whats probably the best setting for a smalller room.
I used mostly for both listening music and watching movies. Thanks in advance 🙏
Thanks for the in-depth analysis Peter, in this and all of your videos! Just a thought - I wonder whether it might be worth revisiting the EQ curve for "loudness" specifically. My reasoning is this: Sonos claim that it's adaptive EQ depending on volume - so I wonder whether the fact that the curve differences were subtle in your tests is down to you (presumably) running the test at a reasonable volume. I wonder whether the differences would be more obvious if comparing different volumes. Maybe worth a video if you have time?
Yes that's what Sonos is doing exactly. For the lower volumes, they boost the treble and the bass. When the volume increases, they will pull back those increases.
@@PeterPee it’d be interesting to see how much those boosts were at each volume level. It was interesting to me to see from your curve that it was subtle because the perceived change for me is quite significant
Hi Peter, I live in an apartment. It is concrete and usually, I have not had problems with noise/subwoofer (except a couple times) but nowadays I am starting to get complaints. I had my sub volume usually set neutral, but I have now brought it down to -3; heard on a forum that was a good idea. I know you don't live in the apartment so you wouldn't know but would you recommend negative sub volume in an apartment, a concrete one to be exact? I also have an isolation pad which can enhance the sub.
Thanks for the detailed review. do you have a recommended sound track to test these settings?
ruclips.net/video/9q2Q_M6SyGE/видео.html. Try this.
For surround sound, is it best to have the Sonos One sl speakers facing me on the couch or facing the tv?
Hi Peter
Nice video! Very educational, how about making a video and testing audio on a wall mounted Sonos arc against a stand mounted one , which one would yield better results ! Thanks and more power.
Cool idea! I am actually queueing this video idea. Be patient though!
Peter, would love to see this same analysis done for Arc WITHOUT Sub... I wonder how much your best settings would vary when the Arc is asked to handle more of the bass. Any insight here?
Great line of thought there. I actually did that listening after I concluded the testing to see if it was worth putting in. But I really think that the Arc needs the Sub to sound its best. I did only one small tweak to the Bass and Treble EQ. I moved the Bass EQ to -3 (instead of the -4 recommended) and I lifted the Treble EQ to -5 (instead of the -6 recommended).
I could not bear to push the bass anymore. But the Treble I can actually do with a bit more but I wanted to maintain a flatter profile.
Peter Pee thanks for the videos and this info. I have a small room and I don’t have a sub either.
@@PeterPee Hi Peter any recommendations for a wallmounted (official and hacked/no magnet) Sonos ARC with 2 sonos one SL as rear speakers? Is it correct that there is already more bass because it is mounted. My current settings are -4 bass/ -4 Treble and loudness off
Hi Peter, thanks for the amazing reviews. How would someone without a frequency meter go about getting the best settings specifically. I have a Beam, Sub gen 3 and One SLs as surrounds but what is the best process for then fine tuning as I’m not 100% sure of the exact process. I have true played the system but a little too bass heavy for me. Do you, for example, turn the bass EQ right down first then up to a good setting and then the sub, or the other way around? I want to avoid over tweaking it so I miss the proper bass cross over and still utilise the subs lows below 120 hz etc. I mostly listen to 5.1 movies on Netflix and Apple 4K with occasional music in a living room setting. Thanks.
Set up your whole 5.1 then run Trueplay.
After Trueplay, turn off loudness and then you can tweak the bass and treble to your liking. Start from -5 and move up until you hear what you like.
Then you turn the sub up from 0 to your liking. Don’t turn up the sub for the sake of turning up the sub. Play some heavy music or action scenes to make sure you’re not pushing the bass too hot.
Finally you can flick on or off the loudness switch depending on whether you want more punch for any particular movie or music.
Awesome! Do you got something like that for my Sonos Playbase? Would love it!
Sorry, no unfortunately. I don't have a playbase to test this now.
Hi Peter, first of all thank you for sharing all your data/thoughts with us. I have a Sonos Arc and two Sonos Ones as rears. My couch is against a wall so I have the Sonos ones on two stands on each side of me, about 4 feet away on each side. For music, do you think I should put it on Ambient or Full? And should I move the Music Level slider at all or keep it zero or below? If you can replicate this set up, try listening to the song “Money” by Pink Floyd. It really shows the difference between Ambient and Full. Thank you.
Yes, Full is preferred. I almost use Full for Music in all my setup. I just don't think the Beam or even the Arc does enough justice to music on their own.
Hi, I'm more concerned about dialogue sound rather than music. Can you let me know which is the best soundbar for audio dialogue?
Great content 👍
I recently purchased the Sonos Sub Gen 3 after watching your reviews on it, I must say its an amazing sub and the bass is far more than I was expecting.
I have one question though,...I do have some electrical buzzing/static noise coming from the sub when watching movies, Netflix/amazon and playing the PlayStation etc only noticeable when you get close to the sub..... is this normal?
No it’s not normal. Some have reported this problem on this channel. I have tried to replicate the problem but it seems that it might be a case of dirty power through the lines and the new caps in the sub being unable to filter it out.
Peter Pee
Thank you for the reply 👍
I will contact Sonos, as now I know it’s not normal.. I will also be sending a video of the noise to them and hopefully they will acknowledge the issue and send a replacement.
Thanks again.
Hello Peter. Thank you for this video and recommendation. They’re perfect. I see that you recommend these settings as the beat for arc+sub:
Bass: -4
Treble: -6
Loudness: On
Night sound & Speech Enhancement: Off
Sub Volume : -5
I followed your recommendation but would like your suggestions for this set up with two additional Sonos Ones as rears. Any chance you can provide this?
Hoping for your reply bro! :)
With the Sonos ones as surround you don’t have to change the eq from what you were using. Surround doesn’t Change the sound profile.
I’d recommend you can consider increasing the treble just one or two notches if you want to hear more surround effects though.
How does this relate to the beam, beam plus sub. In the other beam vs arc video they look very similar curves. Can you do the same for the beam / more beam content. I bought the beam and a sub and stumbled on your content from RUclips. You have loads of arc content but you are lower down on the beam search. No one does the eq settings when I search. In the UK every hifi is pushing the beam. It is super popular due to the covid lockdown.
What is the best sound for the bass and treble with surround on, and true play, i did it but its 0 on bass , treble and sub?
First of, amazing in depth video! I have been wrestling for the longest time with the issue that speech and dialogue are very quiet and other sound effects are a lot louder. How can I adj. the settings to increase the loudness of speech?
If I understood the graphs in the video correctly, I am trying to flatten the curve ?! My Sonos Arc is on default settings (Trueplay tuned and on). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Yeah idea for me is to flatten the curve so no particular frequency will drown out any others. Without measurement equipment, it's hard to do it by ear manually.
On the speech, it is how a lot of material is being encoded nowadays. For Sonos, one of the things that a lot of people have been asking for is to allow for the adjustment of center (or dialogue) channel. Currently, there is no way to do this.
If you may, I would like to suggest that you lower the BASS and TREBLE, and turn off LOUDNESS. This will leave the mid range relatively untouched and higher than the highs and lows. The mid range carries the dialogue. See if that helps you. Although I'd say that sacrifices the musicality.
Do you have a video about the best settings for a arc with 1 sub gen 3 end the fives for the best atmos sound
Peter, Could you please make a video to explain Surrounds and Music Playback settings for One SL pair ?
Sure. I’m waiting for the Sonos fives to come so I can do the video in one go.
Hi Peter,
Just one question, the Sonos arc and sub considered as 5.1,can I get sound in rear speaker (SL one) if the movie or audio file support 5.1.apparently most of the movies comes in 5.1 not 7.1
Yes. You will get surround sound directed to the rear one SL speakers.
Just set my arc, Gen 2 sub, and play:1s to these settings, thanks! Would these be fine for music as well? I use a lot of Spotify on this system when I’m not watching tv.
Yes, they will be fine for music. Although your taste may vary depending on the type of music you listen to. These settings work well for vocals and orchestral type music.
Great explanation, please can you advise what settings should be set for just the Arc on its own? Cheers
You’d run the Sonos arc a little hotter than my settings with the sub. Say set the bass to -2 even. I think with the latest s2 patch to 12.0.5 firmware and later, the bass is actually quite decent.
@@PeterPee Thanks Peter, ok Bass set to -2 and what about treble same as yours without a sub?
Hi Peter! Thank you for your content! From Sonos website the Arc will adjust the frequency response if it detected it’s getting wall mounted. Can you help verify what’s the actual change?
Yeah. Will get to that video soon!
Thanks Peter for investing your personal time and sharing this knowledge which is very useful for all audio lovers out there. If it's not too much trouble, can you help me understand the below regarding bass on arc+sub3 combo (I tried to learn it from this video but still need a confirmation if my assumption is correct).
1. Increasing bass under EQ will send more frequencies (range) from the arc to the sub for it to take over and play - giving more fuller and richer sound
2. Increasing sub level will add more power (db/gain) to each frequency it was sent over by the arc
3. Since arc and sub are paired, under no circumstances, arc is over stressed with lower frequencies since sub is taking that responsibility
Hi Darshak, I hope I did help answer that question in the live stream this morning!
@@PeterPee yes, you did. Absolutely. Many thanks for that. I bought Arc+Sub3 combo three days ago. I find sub 3 to be too boomy with high emphasize on low-bass. My need is rather on mid-bass and high-bass. Sub3's output is too loud at times and at times it just disappears. Looking at frequency response curve you had for Sub3 vs mini, I think sub min would fullfill my need. So I am trying to return my sub 3 and get sub mini whenever it's available in my country. Your answer helped me narrow down to this conclusion.
What was ur setting for Surround? + or -? For a pair of One Sl
The link to reward point just bring me to trysonos SG but there’s no info on any reward program. I think l'm missing something?
There’s a rewards tab towards the bottom of the page. You have to click there. It’s not the most intuitive. After clicking on rewards then you can sign up.
@@PeterPee ok thanks.. got it on web but it wasn't there via iPhone. Not sure about Androids.
@peter do your settings above still stand with the dual sub addition? I’ve recently just added it to mine and ran true play, used the above settings just curious if it’s best under Arc, sub gen 3 x2 and fives for rears
I doubt the settings will remain the same. I should redo this video sometime soon but just haven’t gotten round to it. Let me get round to it sometime soon.
@@PeterPee if possible I’d like to support your efforts in anyway possible. I’m always chasing “the best” and your opinion and testing is very much respected. Look forward to that video!
Hi Peter, I have a question and was hoping you can get back to me with details. I purchased an ARC and I want to mount it on wall. What space do you recommend from my entertainment unit and from my TV. Basically, I would like to measurement, Arc how many inches from my entertainment unit and how many inches from my TV. I hope to here back son. Regards
Thank you for the information. For my clarification, once Trueplay is used, the sound settings in the S2 app must be changed manually correct? I noticed that the sound settings for each section stay at 0 after True play has completed the sound measurements for the room.
Yes, after Trueplay, you have to tune the sound to your liking again. Remember, Trueplay tries to achieve what the sound engineers at Sonos like. You then take it further by tweaking it to what you like.
@@PeterPee Thank you for the response. I have the arc, sub, and 2 Sonos one sl’s. I have a large living room with high ceilings. I may start with your settings and go from there. Thanks again and take care.
Hi Peter, hope you are doing well! Please do a follow up on this topic if possible. Greetings from Sweden.
Will do! Just a lot of videos to make and not enough time! And greetings from Singapore to Sweden!
At first i couldn't believe you had the settings in the negative. Now that i had some days of listening to my Sonos system with the treble on +9 and the bass on +6 i could understand how the bass gets to be a little overwhelming with continuous use watching television.
My goal is to set it up to achieve a flat response so that nothing gets exaggerated. To your own preference, you can then tweak from there.
Obviously without the sub changes, would you recommend the same settings for an Arc with no sub?
Thanks for the great work, I think your tone sweep was critical to helping Sonos with the bass issue that many experienced
Oh if it really helps them I’ll be happy!
Without a sub, I recommend you actually pull back the bass just another -2 from my reference setting. The sub shifts the problematic frequency away from the arc. Without the sub, you will need to tune down the bass so it won’t hurt the sound in the arc.
Peter Pee amazing! Thanks for responding :)
can you recommend settings for the arc+sub withouth trueplay? i am using android dont have trueplay. thanks for the reply in advance :)
You can still use the recommended settings without true play.
Great video as always Peter. Keep up the good job.
I've had my Arc for about two weeks and last night I was watching Netflix. Suddenly I lost sound from the Arc and surround speakers. Light is flashing white and orange. I can play music from the app but no audio from the TV anymore. Have you run into this issue?
Hi Cesar, I have not run into the flashing white and orange lights yet. White and organs flashing is a fault condition. I have not encountered it on anySonos speakers but once I did on the Sonos amp. I think I overloaded it when I tried to wire speakers. Restarting it got rid of the problem.
@@PeterPee oh well, already tried powercyclying the ARC, unplugging, factory reset, nothing works. I will contact Sonos tomorrow and hopefully they will be able to help me.
Disappointing. The arc is so new...:(
@@PeterPee yeah I know, so Sonos is going to replace my ARC. Faulty unit it appears. Hopefully it's not a general issue or a defective part for a whole batch
Well, I have no doubt they will replace it. They are great in that way. But to have a fault develop is inconvenient.
Hi Peter, thanks for the informative video. I have just the arc and using the no subwoofer settings (Bass Eq -3, Treble -5) however if I did a good TruePlay tuning would I need to adjust EQ? Would you use Trueplay tuning and EQ settings together or just one or the other? Thanks!
You can use both settings together. My suggestion is for you to set everything back to zero. Listen to the sound for a while and get used to it. Then run trueplay. Easy enough to turn trueplay on and off to try if you like the sound. After you decided on that, then you EQ the sound. What Trueplay does is to reduce the boom a little. Most of the time it pulls back the peaks and you’ll have to ask yourself if you like the result.
@@PeterPee very informative. On your current setup are you using both EQ and Trueplay together?
I seldom use Trueplay nowadays as I keep having to move speakers and test them for you guys so I keep them as stock as possible!
But for the arc now, I do use Trueplay and I do use settings at the same time.
@@PeterPee Keep up the great work Peter!
Hi Peter, do you live in a flat? I want to purchase a sub for my Arc but I'm afraid that it might disturb the neighbours downstairs (I live in a small apartment) . I know I can lower the bass levels but at that point is it worth it since the point of getting a sub is for that room shaking bass? Would like to know your experience, thanks.
Yes. I stay in a place where I share a wall with neighbours. I Guess I’m fortunate enough to have some tolerant neighbours. I don’t usually blast loud. In fact, if I could go loud, great sound is actually cheaper. To get great dynamic sound at lower levels, it’s actually more expensive!
I have to say, the Sonos sub is a ported sub. And usually ported subs deliver better results at higher levels. If you really have to lower volume, the Sonos sub might not be a very useful addition.
Whats your recomendations on settings for playbase + sub 3gen and 2 play 1 as surrounds? Im gonna try the settings in this video but do you have any suggestions for this setup? Do you think ambient sound in setting in music is best for this setup when listening music?
Ambient setting truly depends on your listening preference. If you were to ask for my opinion in your case, I’d say set yours to ambient for the play:1s.
I don’t have exact recommendation for the playbase now. But you could set the bass a little higher than my recommendations. The playbase has great bass.
Peter Pee thanks Peter! Gonna try this out!
Hey Peter great video ! How well does it work with Apple TV through an LG CX any lip sync issue ?
With the Apple TV4K which I have used, no issues with lip sync at all.
Can you write your sound setting within the lg cx please to be sure I did the right ones ? Thanks a lot for your reply because whatever I do I constantly get audio slighty before video… my settings are pcm and passthrough
Hi when you do a true play what volume should your tv volume be set to before calibrating?
Don't need to worry about that. It's a preset volume.
Hi Peter. Do you still tend to used these setting still with your ARC? Id. It what have you adjusted?
Sub -5???
Have you considered doing a video on what equipment and software you are using to calibrate?
Oh! Cool. You would like to know? Actually, I don't mind but it's likely to be a very technical video. I wasn't sure if my viewers want it.
Peter Pee well, I can’t speak for others. Maybe if you run out of ideas. Maybe “True TruePlay”. ;)
Ha! Yeah. The real trueplay.
Any change you can recommend setting for a rectangular shaped living room with arc, one sub to the right of the tv, another sub behind couch (which faces the tv about 6 feet away) with two One gen 2 also behind couch on flexon stands. I just got the setup and I love it and sounds nice and all. I guess I’m looking for a little more bass from the twin sub setup. I did trueplay it using iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Can you try to make sure the subs are on opposite corners of the room? Diagonally opposite. Are they now both on the same side just front and back?
@@PeterPee I have them both on opposite sides. If your facing the tv while sitting on couch the sub is on left. And sitting on couch other sub on behind couch on the right side.
@@PeterPee setting wise under the “Surround Audio” section I have TV and Music Levels at 0. Music playback at full. Surrounds in the on position. On the “EQ” section I have Bass and Treble set at 0 and Loudness is on. Under the “Sub Audio” section I have it set to 5. Under the “Volume Limit” section it’s set to off. And “True-play Tuning” is set to on.
Thank you for another informative video. I'm going to try your settings but with my Playbase and Gen 2
You can try it out and then tweak from there to your liking!
@@PeterPee I have play 1's as surrounds. I have them on zero. What settings you have or recommend for them?
For surrounds I didn’t recommend as it differs too much from placement. What I set them to is +3 for tv and 0 for music. I also have it set to ambient for music.
When I get my Sonos fives in, I will set them to full. Now I’m using the play:3 for surround.
@@PeterPee I clicked on rewards and created an account. What do I do next to help you receive your points?
Hi Angel, and all who are trying to help and helped! Unfortunately, the local Sonos guys said that I’ll only be able to get the points if the referral made a purchase. I find there’s trickery here and I don’t want to do this for them anymore. If the condition was for a sale to be made by a referral, 30 points is insulting.
Interesting video again! Will try the treble -6 setting to get rid of the metallic sound. 2 questions: are the high frequencies still too high with this setting, but acceptable? And you think this is a good way to solve the metallic sound of is it a band aid solution?
Actually even if Sonos rolled out a fix to this, it is still in the form of the DSP trying to reduce the treble. The end result is the same. Just that when Sonos does it, we still have the full bandwidth and headroom of treble adjustments to play with.
When we adjust eq ourselves, effectively the + portion of the treble eq is as good as unavailable.
Personally, I didn’t mind the higher treble for the arc in the first place as I am mostly in movies and not music. The high treble helps for movies but for music it can be fatiguing.
I tried these settings last night and to me... sounded very flat with no highs. The treble sounds best to me at about +2, and I wouldn't say I get a "tinny metallic" sound some people complain of under those settings. At -6, i don't hear any upper range at all and the music sounds very blah blah. Maybe its a room/trueplay thing? Not sure, I don't have the setup to test the audio band like you do, so its hard to say. I've got a full setup of Arc, Sub and Ones as the surrounds.
@@butchbr73 Sound is really subjective, so whatever sounds good for you will work. That said, I'm loving Peter's video as he's finding an objective baseline in which sound is measured and then be altered (i.e by default bass is heavily increased and treble is high )
I’d strongly recommend that you trust your own ears. Everyone has a different preference and it’s important that you like what you hear. And different genre of music also demands different sound profiles. If you prefer a +2, then you should stick to it. As Long as you don’t feel that the sound is offensive to your ears, that’s the best setting you can have specific to yourself! :) Have fun tweaking!
Peter Pee sorry didn’t mean to sound like it’s demeaning to you. Appreciate everything you’ve done and all the tests and research and videos etc. you do. Awesome work. Just expressing my experience and I know it could be room dependent and personal preference. Was messing around with it for about 2 hours last night to find the best sound to my ears!
hi peter, can you do an videoa of HD Arcana??? i wanted to know that my tv supports only dolby digital now, if i buy the HD ARCANA, will i get dd+ and DD ATMOS??? only you can do better
I'd love to but only when they make up their mind to send me a review unit.
I'm not sure to understands what are the best settings with the sonos arc and sub, I don't have the speakers for the surrounf. Can u help me plx :)?
You can use the same settings as I recommended in the video since you already have the sub and arc. The settings are on screen at 2:47.
As the only person performing real-world sound measurements, I'm curious what Sonos does to the sound curve when the Arc is attached to a wall. As they say it's activated automatically by magnets in the back of the arc detecting the metal bar, I wonder if you could simulate it and test the difference?
Yeah, that’s a video I’ll want to do. Will queue it up!
