Thinking about getting a better surround kit with Dolby Atmos kind of feeling. I'm gonna buy Arc to have wall mounted under my wall mounted 65" QLED800 TV, two of either Sonos era 100 or 300 in the back wall mounted, but still unsure what to go for, and 2x sonos subs on each side of the TV bench. This appears to be a killer system! How would you compare this system to the Nakamichi two sub system, and just as important, which system does your cats prefer? :)
Definitely reminds me of the Nakimachi set up with two subs. I gotta be honest I have both Nakimachi subs on left and right side of the room. Since the Nakimachi is so powerful and overpowering it works out perfectly in my small living room. Jonah Mathis is a fantastic reviewer of Sonos.
@@2629bravesthat’s to bad and I would not trade the Nakimachi in for for anything. I like the diversity of the speakers and controller to zero the sound in. My pet peeve for years now; “designers” should be forced to live with the systems for at least 6 months, and pay for the chiropractic therapy almost certainly required from extended watching at such a high “angle of attack”. I’ll be helping my son set up a 75” Sony, and Arc sound bar within the next few weeks when his home reno is ready. The living room has a 9ft ceiling, and prime viewing location is just over 10ft; but they insisted on mounting TV above a 42” high fireplace mantle, which not only places the Arc’s horizontal acoustic centre approx 4ft high, but the screen’s centre another 24+” above that. Great if you’re 7ft tall, or watch standing up, but unless you have reclining seating, the neck strain will be wearying when you’re binging a season on Yellowstone, or Emily in Paris.😉 And yes, when accurately dialed in, multiple subs almost always gives better overall room distribution.
I have a yamaha stereo amplifier with 2 B&W speakers in the saloon, I was hoping to connect this sub to it. But it probably has no sub line to connect to the amplifier. I can easily connect my amplifier to my desktop, would the sonos sub gen 3 be able to connect and play that way?
Our living room is rather large. So much so, that a pair of Sonos One or Ikea Symfonisk speakers not would have been sufficient as surrounds. So we're using Sonos Play:3s as surrounds. It's unfortunate, that these have been discontinued. There really is a gap between Ones and Fives, that these do fill. At least the Play:3 have S2 support, so there's that. And they can be picked up for decent money second hand. I've been waiting a few months to pull the trigger on upgrading the front, going from a Playbar to the Arc, adding the HDFury Arcana (TV is arc only and I also have a Hue Sync Box that won't pass eARC either), upgrading our Bluray player to a 4K capable one with eARC support and last but not least adding a second sub. But all of that should happen, over the next month. And I agree: Peter Pee is a great source for in depth Sonos analysis. He takes it to a whole different level. Been following him ever since I got into Sonos.
I got my 2nd sub this week and your review is spot on, movies are amazing but music no real benefit at least not what I've listened to. Main difference to me at least is the warmth and ease of the bass and no distinct point where the sub is positioned. Very good review thank you
@@bbqboy175 I Actually gave in and picked up the Arc, The Arc Sounds good but am not blown away like I thought i would be, I thought the Arc would Sound much better then the Playbar but it's just a slight difference nothing super noticeable
In metric meters, where does a room become large enough for a dual sonos sub gen 3? Where is the threshold rougly? I have a living room + kitchen as one open space.
I have Beam+Gen 3 Sub+One SLs in my office space of 4 meter by 6.5 meters and the single sub is more than enough. I have a larger great room with Family room, dinning room, and kitchen at 6 meters wide by 13 meters long. Dual subs fill that space perfectly (both subs on far end of room on either side of Arc).
Hey Jonah, I seen you have a cat.. My 2 Bengal cats are very curious and also have claws. Can the cats get to the sub speakers and rip them up or is there a screen is front of them?
Can't believe I didn't include this in the video. The overall cost is going to be around $2,500 USD. It's definitely not the "best surround sound system" at this price, but for wireless, multiroom casting, and ease of use/setup, it's likely the best.
Important to note is Sonos systems are independent components, so $2500 can be done over time and to ones liking, you may not need every component, unlike other sound bars where it is all or nothing.
I love your videos! Have you heard of the sennheiser ambeo soundbar? You’ve done a massive soundbars review and I was surprised that you didn’t include the best soundbar in the world.
Thank you very much! And I definitely have heard of it. I didn’t include it because it was a little too far outside the price range for that video. I will be doing a video on it eventually!
Will the kids be able to sleep upstairs? We'll be moving to a much bigger house end of summer and I'm thinking of adding an extra Sub. Slightly worried though about their nights rest.. 😅
Do you think the dual sub will be overkill for CoD MW2. Currently have the beam, sub and pair of one sls in DD 5.1 and sounds amazing on PC with the speakers all being so close around me
Hi guys, since I added my second sub yesterday I realized the bass of my existing sub went down low but It was strong and deep bass before I added a second one. Do you guys think this might be because of positioning, bass/ EQ, tv music levels. The are both sub gen3s in a big room. One good thing is u can't really tell where the bass is coming from is full filling the room. Anyone for help thanks
Hi Jonah, great video. My current system is an Arc / sub gen3 / one sl’s as surrounds with a LG OLED C1 65”. I am thinking in a upgrade, add a second sub or replace the one sl’s for fives as surrounds. Which option do you think will be better for my system? Second sub or fives as surrounds? I use most for movies and tv series.
Sonos de-tunes the rear speakers in rear surround duties with the sub. The Fives will not perform to its full frequency range compared to stand alone or stereo pair configuration. The Arc/Beam home theater set-up takes those low bass frequencies and sends them mostly to the sub. The Fives will be louder compared to the One SLs or even the Era 300. Sonos even turn off the Era 300 center speaker when they are used in surround sound home theater set-up.

I just added a second Gen 3 sub and with just one I was able to tell where it was positioned in the room. With 2 I cannot. It really made a difference in a large room.
I have mine behind the couch against a wall. Can clearly tell when sitting on the couch watching tv but if listening to music and being anywhere else in the house the bass just blends in and feels being everywhere. I might have to try another locations too
@@PoorCoyotee mine i have in front at left side 45 degrees from the lostening area, and i can tell you mine blends all over the room its normal that you can locate it specially if its just right beside you try to put it in front
One sub has to be a Gen 3 Sub and you can add another Gen 3 Sub or Gen 2 sub. No option to add a sub mini in a dual configuration as part of a soundbar configuration. Best option might be adding a sub mini and dual Fives to soundbar for more low end bass. The Fives can give you some pretty good bass compared to the Era 100/300, One SLs, or Symfonisk speakers.

Hi Jonah, question for you... how do your cats co-exist with your Sonos equipment? I've had people tell me a cat would likely scratch the glossy finish on the subs and the fabric exterior of the Beam. Have you experienced anything like this?
They actually don't bother the subs at all. They'll jump on them, but they never scratch or hang around them for long. They don't mess with the Sonos Arc much because it's on the mantle, but we are very consistent with yelling at them to get down if they do jump up to the mantle. When I had the Samsung HW-Q950T (cloth covering over front and top), they did seem more attracted to it, but we were able to keep them away enough from damaging it. Depends on how stubborn the cats are as to if they'll listen or not.
Nice 😂 I'm still struggling to even connect my Sub Gen 3 😂 got a static ip now hopefully the 20th plus attempt will work. Almost to the point of sending the fkin thing back.
Definitely confirmed my thoughts and reasons for getting another sub just for balance. Position can be tricky though. I've heard that the arc, 2 ones and a sub can give you 11.1.2 sound. But here you've said 5.1.2 ??
@@alexgarcia8365 hi Alex, as you have the right order of the x.y.z with x being number of speakers, y bring bass, z is atmos speakers so generally speakers installed in ceilings or in the case of some soundbars and some rear speakers, upwards firing speakers. Generally the 5 refers to front left, middle, front right and 2 rears. Some systems will add 2 more speakers at te rear and 4 more along the side LS if a roo. To get 11 speakers. So if someone has 11.2.4 this would be 11 speakers, 2 subs and 4 atmos (ceiling speakers).I hope that make sense. Cheers
@@jb7753 okay I was a bit confused while reading this but the last sentence made sentences. The last digits 0.0.? Is the number of speaking that are in the ceiling or high firing speakers
I got the sonos arc with sub and also a 11.1 traditional setup, I find the lower frequencies always come from wherever the speakers are located LoL. I don't know how ppl say they can locate when the lower frequencies are coming from the sub...
Sonus probably has the best wireless system in surround sound setups/speakers. I probably would drop a few bucks for a decentAUX type micrphone to plug into your phone. You can get them for $25 and greatly exceeds anything your mic does in your phone.
They do, I have Rythmik and Hsu subs. The Sonos blew me away with how punchy the bass is for how small it is. Looks are deceiving, the dual subs inside was an ingenious design I’ve only seen from SVS before. The Sonos setup is worth it
The SVS PB12-Ultra/2 is the subwoofer I am referencing the Sonos sub to be similar to in design with the dual subs facing each other, obviously not as much output but the design itself has merit
Hey Jonah, love your content. Would you consider grabbing the Sennheiser AMBEO for review? I'm sure you have heard about it to this point and its supposedly does a good job as an all in one system. Would love to hear a detailed review from you on it. Keep up the great work!
I've received a ton of requests to do a review on the Sennheiser AMBEO! Just need to find the right time to do a review on it as I have a ton of other videos planned out. I will get to it!
Yes, it is ... i've go that setup paired with a playbar and a sub in the livingroom and the Play:3s are a lot better in a larger room than Sonos One speakers, where I'd find that 2 Fives might be a bit of a waste.
Jonah, You mentioned the Sonos Five speakers. I was told by a Best Buy salesman that the Sonos Fives are not meant to be combined with a Sonos system with an Arc and a Sub. They said the Fives are meant to be used as standalone speakers. Could you please comment.
Best Buy salesman are usually about as useful as reading a box yourself. If you want to use Fives as surrounds you can, and they do sound better than the smaller Ones. However if you aren't the type pf person to listen at higher volumes then you likely wouldn't get much benefit out of the fives as surrounds in movie/tv application. Duel subs are a similar idea, if you aren't a home theater enthusiast you won't get much out of them either. If you are like me and have a dedicated theater then pretty much all the sonos stuff is "subpar" and you'd want to go to dedicated separate amps and standalone speakers. I do enjoy the sonos stuff in smaller spaces however, I use them in my bedroom and they work well. Overpriced for what they offer in terms of sound quality but very simple to setup and use.
@@philippeaboussouan2361 Well I guess it depends on what you want to spend on a second system and how loud you want that system to play regularly. In the sonos brand I believe the best "bang for the buck" is the sonos beam with a sub. If want surrounds in a smaller space get 2 of the Ones. If you are in a large room the Fives are a bit louder, but you would only like notice that difference while listening to music. The effects of most surround tv/movie mixes are generally subtle on purpose and the Ones handle them fine. If you are thinking a larger living room I'd get the Arc instead of the Beam. 2 subs are great but the extra cost is high for an effect that I've found only audiophiles tend to notice. On a side note Sony has a new system out that I believe could quite possibly sound better than the sonos, the HT-A9...you may want to check it out. Not cheap, but neither is a full sonos surround setup.
There is no point in doing that. The only reason why you would want 5.1 is for movies. Not so much for music. And while your Play:5s have an audio input, you will always have lip sync issues with the analog to digital conversion. That's the reason all of Sonos soundbars use an optical or digital input for sound from the TV. No conversion. To achieve 5.x.x with Sonos, there is no way around a soundbar.
I had my arc for about a week and impressed with the sound but not impressed with the audio lag. Mostly with my xbox one x during dolby atmos setting. Video is much ahead of the audio with the tcl r625 65in.
I have the same issues with my xbox one x when trying to use the dolby atmos settings. Definitely frustrating and I"m using the Optoma P2 Cinemax short throw projector

Hey, I just got the arc, sub gen3 and two Sonos one I used them as surround speakers. Would you recommend me to go for a second sub. We generally watch movies and music. Thanks
Is it worth getting the sub? I went from a middle of the pack Samsung bar with a sub, I’m happy with the bass, but i can tell it’s missing the “umph” I have a 100 bucks off so I’m thinking about getting it
Got the 5.2.2 config and am really happy with it. If you got the money, buy this!
Great info, thanks! I am now going to get another sub 4.
i have the dual subs and love it with the ARC....am thinking of adding the Sonos 5's as rears.....currently have the ONE SL's......great sound
Add the Play 5s you will love them
Depending on the size of the room, second hand Play:3s may also be a great option.
Hope they make a 9.2.4 system i love the sound of Sonos 💪👌
What should be the minimum size of the room using two sub and two surround sound speakers?
I'm liking these videos. I'd love to see a video of how you can connect the Sonos in-ceiling speakers for audio to an A/V receiver with 7.2 channel without having two separate systems.
Any plans to update a vid with dual Gen 4 subs?
Is its lack of DTS a factor, if my Blu-ray player has it? Is DTS in anything other than discs?
I do have a couple of Sonos’s subs on 2 room-sets of Sonos’s in the same room. I run two 5s on one “room” and a sound bar on the second set.
Sound great with the 5s. Wish they had additional tweeters for those of are missing upper level range of hearing (sitting in jet helicopters for too long)
This appears to be a killer system!
I returned the Nakamichi yesterday. Bass was great but couldn't make the surround fit my living room
@@2629bravesthat’s to bad and I would not trade the Nakimachi in for for anything. I like the diversity of the speakers and controller to zero the sound in. It’s fun to mess around the different ways you can work the Nakimachi system. Sonos does look bougie but I wanted more movie theatre 360 surround sound. Hi do you think in a small lounge a Sonos Arc & 1 Sub Gen 3 would be too much?
Ouch my neck (how high your tv is mounted lol)
Maybe he watches tilted back on a sit-up bench.
Even worse is the dangling cables
Great if you’re 7ft tall, or watch standing up, but unless you have reclining seating, the neck strain will be wearying when you’re binging a season on Yellowstone, or Emily in Paris.😉
And yes, when accurately dialed in, multiple subs almost always gives better overall room distribution.
People who have a tv that high up just don't seem to know how to watch tv, it's not ideal.
Very good review thank you
I just ordered my 2nd Sub, I have a existing Sub , A Playbar and 2 play 5s, I hope the 2nd Sub wont be overkill for my apartment.

I’m using play 5 for my rear speakers ..if you could would you put your sub in the front instead of the back?
How much is a 5.2.2 set up gonna cost? Then is it the best surround sound system set up at that price?
Can't believe I didn't include this in the video. The overall cost is going to be around $2,500 USD. It's definitely not the "best surround sound system" at this price, but for wireless, multiroom casting, and ease of use/setup, it's likely the best.
Important to note is Sonos systems are independent components, so $2500 can be done over time and to ones liking, you may not need every component, unlike other sound bars where it is all or nothing.
Hey Jonah you can now adjust the height audio for the atmos speakers on the Arc. Can you do a video on this please??
YT just recommended me one vídeo of this channel , thank Goh
Im a music person and love bass like if you have a 12 inch in the trunk without rattle is it good for music???

I love your videos! Have you heard of the sennheiser ambeo soundbar? You’ve done a massive soundbars review and I was surprised that you didn’t include the best soundbar in the world.
Thank you very much! And I definitely have heard of it. I didn’t include it because it was a little too far outside the price range for that video. I will be doing a video on it eventually!
Will the kids be able to sleep upstairs? We'll be moving to a much bigger house end of summer and I'm thinking of adding an extra Sub. Slightly worried though about their nights rest.. 😅
How would the bass response be if you kept one subwoofer upright and laid the other one flat

I would say fives as surround is over kill, go for dual sub
Sonos de-tunes the rear speakers in rear surround duties with the sub. The Fives will not perform to its full frequency range compared to stand alone or stereo pair configuration. The Arc/Beam home theater set-up takes those low bass frequencies and sends them mostly to the sub. The Fives will be louder compared to the One SLs or even the Era 300. Sonos even turn off the Era 300 center speaker when they are used in surround sound home theater set-up.
So set the rears as stereo and not surround? @@mrgold3591

Can we add a sonos gen 3 + sub mini? Or in this "Dual" option sonos only allow the same product?
I'm pretty sure it has to be the same product, I don't think you can mix and match with a Sub and Sub Mini.

Same question here man, I'm looking to get a second sub just to see that difference
What is 11.1.2 and 5.1.2? I know 5.1 is 5 speakers (in a particular order) and .1 base (1 base)
I don’t under stand the 0.0.2 and the 11.0(1)
@@alexgarcia8365 hi Alex, as you have the right order of the x.y.z with x being number of speakers, y bring bass, z is atmos speakers so generally speakers installed in ceilings or in the case of some soundbars and some rear speakers, upwards firing speakers. Cheers

Hi mate can I use sonos sub with sonos portable speaker?
Sonus probably has the best wireless system in surround sound setups/speakers. I probably would drop a few bucks for a decentAUX type micrphone to plug into your phone. You can get them for $25 and greatly exceeds anything your mic does in your phone.
Great video but why would you recommend having an Arc over a playbar?
I actually kept the playbar and bought an arc, forgot about this comment lol

If Sonos could ever match just a basic SVS subwoofer - id go for sonos in a heartbeat.

Is it possible to add 2 play:3 with the arc?
I believe so, yes.
100%
Perfect explanation right here!
@@erikniemi1977 Thanks for the information.
@@erikniemi1977 so if I want it for 50% music, 40% normal tv station and 10% movies what should I get (ive got a bigger system in the basement)❓
I really wish I could setup my 2x Play 5s, a sub and 3x Play 1s in a 5.1 setup. Do you have any tips on making that happen?
There is no point in doing that. The only reason why you would want 5.1 is for movies. Not so much for music. And while your Play:5s have an audio input, you will always have lip sync issues with the analog to digital conversion. That's the reason all of Sonos soundbars use an optical or digital input for sound from the TV. No conversion. To achieve 5.x.x with Sonos, there is no way around a soundbar.
I would love to add another sub. No brainier for who wants theater effect. 😀
7:12 if you ues the Spotify app on your tv it is way better
