Hey everyone! Really appreciate all the great comments and engagement. One clarification: When using AirPlay 2 to get sound from Apple devices to the Era 300 -- I did experience "Atmos-like" effects (I checked and each speaker was pumping sound out through the up-firing drivers and I was hearing effects very similar to those I heard from the HomePods) HOWEVER, I have not gotten confirmation from Sonos or Apple that discreet Dolby Atmos information is actually being sent to the Era 300 from, in this case, the Apple TV 4K 2nd Gen box I was using. I await clarification from the manufacturers and will update here when I know more. For now, the only sure way to get Atmos from the Era 300 is to link them to a Sonos Arc or Sonos Beam soundbar with an HDMI input.

If I had to start from scratch, I'd get the Dragon over the Sonos system. But by the time the Dragon was released, I had the arc, 2 subs, and a pair of Ones as rear surrounds. That made the substitution of the Era 300s for the Ones a no brainier. Now if Sonos wants to give the Dragon some competition, Sonos needs to find a way for the arc to pair with a stereo pair of 300s on either side of the arc in addition to a pair of 300s as rear surrounds. I know I would be game for that.

One of the biggest changes I've ever made. The Ones are terrific little speakers, but were designed for something entirely different. Finally, Sonos has rear surrounds that are Atmos. I went from 180 degrees to 360 degrees by switching my ones to the Era's. Night and day difference. Not cheap but well worth it.
I used to have an 11.2 Denon processor with a 7 channel power amp. Really big system that sounded amazing, but I moved. I never want to have to wire up a big system like that again. With the Sonos setup I have now, It sounds really close.
I got 50 dollars off on each Era buying them last week, and with Black Friday sales going on now is a good time to make the jump.
My advice is get them. I promise you won't regret it. Total game changer.

Haters don’t come for me but I still have a Bose 5.1 that really barely works anymore due to well they don’t make or support it. I was full on ready to pull the trigger on the Klipsch 7’s for my tv sound. Willing to skip the surround altogether cause I’m still kind of mad at the $3k investment I made years ago that just vanished off the market shortly after. IMO It’s a hassle dealing with a receiver. TV’s today don’t want to play nice unless they are in control. But then we are suffering from terrible sound bars as a replacement. Thanks to this review, I will consider rejoining my surround family with a Sonos system. This system looks very intriguing with very little drama. The one caveat is the Klipsch are also a visual show stopper. Especially the walnut vs the plastic Sonos. Thank you for such a great review !

They seem to be bomb proof the first item I bought was a very tatty Beam gen 1 to see if I liked it because I found it hard to justify the price of a new one. I stripped it down cleaned it up and it blew me away with its sound quality. Since then I’ve been a convert and now can fully justify the investment. They give me enjoyment every day. I have just bought a second hand Era 300 and am looking forward to trying one out. Thanks for your review. 👍

So I’ve had a play bar, 2 play III (for surround), and a sub, since 2016. I splurged and added a pair of Dynaudio Special Forties (up front), and an REL sub, run by a Peachtree Nova 300. This non Sonos stuff I control with a Sonos port. I put just this equipment in a separate “room” on the Sonos app. When we jam out, I can listen to Hi-Res (from Amazon or Tidal) and it sounds great (I do not have a separate stereo room so Audio only is a separate listening experience than watching TV.). This was the setup until last week. I’ve replaced the play bar with an Arc (noticeable improvement). Now, when we are jamming, sometimes I turn the Arc/play bar/Sonos sub room volume up a little(just a little). It just kind of fills the room up a little more with sound. Next I am going to replace the Play III’s with ERA 300’s and maybe turn that room volume up a bit more,, only if it can compete a little better with the Dynaudio’s! (All the Sonos stuff would then be Hi-Res). Has anyone else tried to improve their Sonos, audio only listening experience? (Sorry so long a post but a lot of explanation needed)

The Apple Home pod does NOT have upward firing drivers. The Era 300's are, IMO, more useful. AS you can use them as surround speakers, by themself as a stern pair and on their own. Sound quality, both are amazing and fun to listen to, one needs to listen and see what they prefer.

Superb review which helped me to decide which way to go with my Soundbar choice after buying a new TV. So I bought an Arc to replace my Beam 2 as it was 20%off. Now I'll save for some Era 300s which hopefully be on special later on in the year. The alternative was the Sony HTA9 but that system is at a significant cost upfront. And I've never seen these on special (in Australia).

Hey man I’m a sales person in one of the major appliance stores in Australia (there’s only 3 so take your pick lmfao), but for Black Friday this year looks like there will be a heavy focus on audio this year. This is because we are seeing a massive saturation this year in home audio. I can’t reveal exactly what products they will be but definitely keep a lookout especially on the SONOS or the Sony AT.

Really enjoyed your Sonos Eras 300 review today. Already am vested in Sonos Audio ecosystem, including it's cool App. Currently have 21 Sonos Speakers in various paired configuration sprinkled throughout the house. So no matter where you walk you upstairs or down, you'll get a constant wave of seamless sound greeting so no matter what's playing like the house music or if a 4K Blu-ray movie is playing, than you'll here that movie track too. During you presentation the Sonos Eras 300's in Stereo Mode by you big screen TV, noticed you have some ultra cool flat black looking speaker stands where you've mounted the Sonos Eras 300 speakers. Who is the vendor and what is the model number for that set of Speaker Stands?

Hey Caleb. I’d love it if you could do an entire review of the arc with dual gen3 subs and the era 300. I found the best sound will come with subs in diagonal configuration and the one on the back at least 20 inches away from the corner so it gets a less boomy sound but overall sounds badass throughout the entire room even with it being next to the open kitchen. The era 300’s slightly pointed inward towards the left/right channels of the arc rather than the wall which gives you a better sound bubble. I wedged the back of the arc 1 inch due to the 12 degree angle on the height channels so it reaches to 7.8 feet much better sounding. And settings for the arc eq are bass +1 and treble +3 which gave me a flat look in the 20-20k sweep I did switch on speak enhancement as well to achieve this and dual sub is +6 to get 8-10db on top of the 250hz and above. I noticed the difference from having them below the arc to each side they did give out more output 25-55hz evenly through 65hz buy diagonal the 60hz is a bit heightened but not really an issue once in use as it is evenly spread through the room. Surrounds settings are tv +4 music +3 and full, height settings +8 due to my 9 feet ceiling and arc at 6 feet exactly from the ceiling (balanced volumes this way. Maybe you could replicate this and find it even a bit better than you did previously.

So you CAN use those speakers for both Dolby Atmos on the TV with Arc and for normal stereo speakers for music? Do you need to switch their purpose every single time or do they know automatically if they are used via the Arc or as "normal" Multiroom-Music-Boxes? For only rear speakers for the Arc I find them a little too expensive but when they can also substitute Stereo speakers in my living room the price would fit better :)

I’m wondering this. Haven’t loved the idea of purchasing a 3 year old sound bar - especially given the massive improvement Sonos made from Gen1 Beam to Gen2. Given the timeframe that Beam G2 came out, seems like we’re getting close to due for an Arc Gen2… Seriously considering adding the Era 300s to our Beam Gen2 and then upgrading to Arc2 when it comes out. Surely by next year?

A home theater AVR would be best for the TV system with or without amplifiers. Soundbars are nice but nothing can equal a 5 or 7 surround with 2 or 4 ceiling speakers and a sub or 2. I would rather have speaker wires than RF interference. The more Wi-Fi you have, the more likely you will have issues. With all the home automation and streaming devices along with cell phones etc., the more overtaxed a Wi-Fi system will get, and you may likely start getting some buffering and noise. I run CAT6 and speaker wires wherever I need to in the walls but I'm opening up the whole house for a major remodel. Thanks for a great product review. I highly recommend a Denon or Yamaha AVR. I'm only using a 7.1 Definitive Technology speaker set but the separation is excellent enough to startle me.
