+Computer An ssd, ram and an OS all together will cost you at least 150 euro. Isn't that big of a deal for a tiny SILENT powerhouse of a pc that can be taken everywhere you want ;) It's like an High-end gaming laptop without the top (no screen).
+Kameel you can buy better laptops for this price, and it will have both RAM, hdd, screen and keyboard. These bricks are neat little machines, but their prices are seriously fucked up.
+msgamingelite Since this is in Canada, it would be "Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories, Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith".
DJ Jesus. He Died for your spins Yes. It's funny to know the full set of names and titles, but in any practical sense, "Her Majesty" or indeed "The Queen" would suffice.
People saying "overpriced" really aren't thinking this through. Sure, price to performance levels are terrible compared to something you could build, you need to consider other factors. Nothing you could build would be able to be so small yet powerful and size/looks is super important for some people. It's not a budget PC but nobody is trying to say it is.
% means: convert the next two digits (or letters) to something. %30 is converted to "0" since there is two "%30" s it becomes "00" there is another percent sign which would convert the "%00" which is " NULL" which crashes chrome
This review has really helped me with the personal project of buidting a William Gibson-style deck Thanks for showing me that I won't have to resort to using a laptop motherboard
Thanks Zotac for sponsoring the vid and thank you linus for making it, I think its great ,love the idea of being able to make my own router :) and What make me interested in the zbox is the fact that its neat, compact and light weight , so I will be able to carry it around easily while traveling if im working or playing some games :)
$800 price point is pretty darn tough especially when you can build a very decent gaming desktop with that money but at the same time, if apple built this machine, it would cost $4000 with worst specs
Thx a lot for stating the rough price at the moment of recording! While I do watch some high end tech videos out of interest (and wishful thinking) this product is clearly more of a value attempt. If you would pls continue to state its price-preferrably even at the beginning- then I would know from what point of view to take the content. Like this I always have to check out prices before watching a video, which most often is too much of a Hassle, so I don't watch at all. Greetings!
+BADBOYONE well considering the fact the equivalent 4gb 960/r9 380's do use more than that and can see performance improvements vs the 2gb models at 1080p 3 gb is a happy medium.
4:05 "From there, it was just a matter of inserting the SSD directly into the SATA ports, and securing it with another thumb screw." Oh, the eufemism... :)
Please, do not use a 2.5" mechanical drive. They often operate at 5600rpm or they are very expensive. I really notice how slow my laptop is compared to my pc. To boot up with a 5600rpm drive takes ages, and to boot programs often takes a while too. Especially games. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, get at least a 250 gig ssd for the programs you use often, and a hdd for the smaller programs and those you do not use often. (and offcourse as storage drive for all your po-... I mean, movies. :)
+Animiles I see your point but I dont think it can be that slow. I have 8.1 on my mother's laptop which has an 5200U and a 5400RPM HDD and it boots up obviously slower than my rig equipped with a SSD but it boots fast enough and doesnt take more than 20-30 seconds ( if that ). We've been kinda spoiled by SSDs and think waiting for 20 sec is somehow the end of the world now. Does it feel awesome to turn on your PC and in 6 seconds you are already browsing ? Sure, but it's not mandatory and it's not "stone age" slow.
Diavolo222 I use a 120GB SSD in my desktop. Booting into desktop isn't a problem if it takes 30 seconds instead of 8. But once I'm booted into windows and I click my browser then it takes a while to start and respond quickly because my laptop is still booting up background programs. But other then booting up I notice a huge difference in loading battlefield maps. When I'm playing BF4 with a friend (me on my pc and he on my laptop) I'm already killing people while he's still waiting untill the game is loaded.. And if you're willing to spend 800 on a case, motherboard and 960, then I don't understand it if you're willing to use a 5600rpm hdd instead of an SSD for main programs :3
Animiles Using BF4 as a benchmark is pretty...stupid. Laptops, most laptops, arent made for gaming and BF4 is notorious for having slow load times outside of SSDs. You shouldnt NEEED SSD to play a game. Also, if you have too many background programs loading up at startup, maybe you need to tweak your laptop abit. Bloatware is the bane of laptops.
Diavolo222 I've disabled the bloatware. I use many other little programs that I want to start at startup like pushbullet, puush and more. So I'm stuck with the slower bootup time. I use them on my pc too though. BF4 is a good benchmark since it has slow loading times. I can't install it on my SSD in my pc since it's only 120GB. I use a 7200RPM HDD and It's fully loaded before I can deploy. Because they both run off of HDD's and the loading time is slow I can say which one is faster and how much faster it is without software telling me. I can see how slow the 5600RPM one is. And now imagine the time you'll lose each time you load a file, start a program or copy and past files. Over all it'll slow you down quite a bit.
Linus, I like your humour - the link in the description is awesome and I think everyone should visit it, especially the people who use chrome as their browser! Keep it up :)
I feel that This small form factor PC would be very good for taking on the go, like to LAN parties and stuff like that, verses trying to lug around a expensive, and no doubt heavy, desktop PC around. If I got one, I would probably mount it to the back of a monitor and basically have a better and cheaper version of a iMac. Great review BTW Linus.
The price is just right. We will always have to pay more for more compact stuff. That's just how it is. Performance seems very solid and if you are someone who wants to get into moba gaming and have no patience to learn to build PCs or take care of them, something like this seems ideal. I know one of my friends would be thrilled to buy something like this.
+Diavolo222 It doesn't come with ram or a HDD and no OS. You'd be better off buying Alienware's desktop. Comes complete WITH an OS AND is cheaper. Oh, and it's also on the small side.
Diavolo222 Ah, not sure about prices in different countries, I live in the US. Alienware here is pretty well priced. There are cheaper, but not by much.
Horrible machine for the price, small or not. There are cheaper alternatives that are compact and have all their parts AND an OS. No one should purchase this, it's a complete waste of money.
Matthew Watt No, it's about the size of a small console. Any sane person would be willing to deal with something slightly larger that's cheaper and has better performance.
Just bought one of these for $100 to use with my live gamer portable, for 1080p or less console capture. It's pretty good, and beats my old laptops quick sync encoder.
+DeadNullermand My 1.7 ghz pentium with a gtx 560 runs farcry 4 at max, 80+ fps. I also don't even have a storage drive or motherboard. My pc is great.

I was looking into getting myself a super small yet powerful computer and this thing really got my attention. The price was a bit high but not necessary a deal breaker, I just simply lost interest once I found out the i5 5200U inside it is only a dual core chip. Maybe next time when a newer version gets released with a quad core :)
My PC costed me $800, i5 (4690 or 4960k or something like that, can't remember) quad core 3.5ghz, 8 gb ram, and a MSI GeForce GTX 960. And everything else you need. But the micro-PC is badass!
$800 would build a BALLER HTPC if you're willing to use a normal sized HTPC case, if space isn't an issue, like in a TV's component stand. If you had a gaming rig already, a WAY cheaper mini-pc could easily game stream using Steam. Just ideas. Depends on each individual's situation, of course.
Could someone tell me what does @LinusTechTips use to meter the wattage/power consuption of their systems? Is it a software or some sort of voltmeter device (like for 6:24)? Thanks in advance!
Linus! You said some games don't agree with dual cores which you've proven in the unlocked Pentium dual core video, such as AI not existing and some other things in a couple games. However, it's okay! It has hyperthreading, so games and the OS treat it as if it's a quad core and the super high IPC performance of Intel can back it up well enough. This is an AWESOME little system!!! Too bad it's so damn expensive.
I simply have to ask: Since moving to the new studio, Linus is fiddling with something under the desk now and then while recording these videos. Adjusting the audio? Changing to a new slide on the prompter?
Interesting vid, Linus. I do have a slimline case around here, somewhere, and would like to set it up with a cooling tower for entertainment... need to replace my lava lamp with something interesting. :-) Have you done a build vid for small gaming machines? Tnx rc
It would be good if this had a Skylake CPU with a Quad Core i5 6300HQ as the minimum. Sure 6300 HQ is non-hyperthreaded but it'll sure be a lot better than 2 cores with HT.
Can you make a video about how to build a private file sharing server that has a backup drive included? I was thinking that any approved computer on the network could connect to it and it would have weekly backups of the main drive. Having additional features, like running a mumble server, would also be pretty nice.
Do people normally play games without AA on PC? I always have AA on when I play my PC games and console games on X1 and PS4 as far as I know all have some form of AA.
Zotac should have put in a 35-45w i5/i7 cpu as well as make it bigger at 3.5 - 4L in size. If alienware updates their gpu to around the en970's, the alpha is going to be a pretty tempting option.
I'm setting up a board room with a TV for displaying information, would you recommend this rather then hooking up a full PC ? I want to make it look good and not bulky
So right now I have a laptop but I never use the screen, the keyboard and the touch pad. Also I never use it on the go, I have a tablet for that, but I do like to take it with me every few months for a week or so. My ideal upgrade would be something like this, but I would expect a better price. Is there even such thing as a decent desktop that fits into a backpack?
$800 with no storage, OS, or RAM? Fuck that.

Slap in a 4 core and im sold.
1:13 OMG a wild Linachu appears. Gotta catch it
That url in the intro just restarted my computer. thanks.
so linus how do u feel as u r nearing 2M subscribers??
I can finally watch these videos in 4k Yay!
Interesting vid, Linus. I do have a slimline case around here, somewhere, and would like to set it up with a cooling tower for entertainment... need to replace my lava lamp with something interesting. :-)
Have you done a build vid for small gaming machines? Tnx rc
It would be good if this had a Skylake CPU with a Quad Core i5 6300HQ as the minimum. Sure 6300 HQ is non-hyperthreaded but it'll sure be a lot better than 2 cores with HT.
Linus, you rock! Keep up the good work! :)
lol, for the cost you could buy a good moped, or a dual xeon workstation, and still have enough to buy Dyson vacuum
3:31 "for whatever the case may be" I see what you did there ;)
Quick Question - how would i use my existing 5.1 audio speaker...which needs 3 ports for output?
Zotac should have put in a 35-45w i5/i7 cpu as well as make it bigger at 3.5 - 4L in size. If alienware updates their gpu to around the en970's, the alpha is going to be a pretty tempting option.
so close to 2 million !
Minus the price factor, because... WOW is that steep... Would this be a good backup for a DIY Chromebook/Chromebox?
Pokemon-Linus?? Now i can't get the image out of my mind. Thanks Linus.
Fraking awesome system. If I was in the market for a new system now I would definitely consider it, if it was a quad core.
1:00 the URL that crashes chrome (or, it did, until it was patched)
Where's the link for the hoodie Linus?
I would love to see a teardown of this. LinusTechTips start doing teardowns.
I'd wait until it goes on clearance after the sales inevitably don't exist at $800. It would make a great HTPC for around $400~$500 tops.
BTW, love how when you move your hands in front of your dangling pull strings and they start to wiggle around on my monitor :P
I don't understand the intro subtext. a/%%30%30 resolves to a/%2500 which doesn't mean anything. Am I missing some sort of reference?
That weird wobble of the O on top at 2:18 ... ??
Please review the new 4k and 5k iMacs!
I'm setting up a board room with a TV for displaying information, would you recommend this rather then hooking up a full PC ?
I want to make it look good and not bulky
8:34 fake opening - tape was already cut
HAHAHAHAHA
i left wordless... what a beauty!
Teasing something you're gonna be doing soon. *Me:* "Scrapyard wars!" *Linus:* Some weird 2 PCs and one box bs.
will you review the Silent Base 600? I think a new ultra Silent Gaming PC would be awesome! :)
you think this pc would be good for a streaming pc?
1:01 - Broken url in the title screen
So right now I have a laptop but I never use the screen, the keyboard and the touch pad. Also I never use it on the go, I have a tablet for that, but I do like to take it with me every few months for a week or so. My ideal upgrade would be something like this, but I would expect a better price. Is there even such thing as a decent desktop that fits into a backpack?
