I hope you add her how to reapply sunscreen when you're a makeup user vid James. Many people in the comments section asking for technique for reapplication
I think vitamin C deserves the hype because it's one of the few ingredients with a very large body of research to it - that being said, it is only effective if it actually works for you, as in you find one you like, your skin tolerates it well, and you enjoy using it. It's like with sun screen: the best one is the one you enjoy or at least don't mind (re)applying all the time, and it doesn't matter how hyped it is. I will always favor ingredients with solid research, but in the end we're all individuals and research never claims that something is 100% effective for absolutely every person out there with no downsides.
I think that large body of research (if you can even call industry funded studies that) is negated by the variability you get on the market in terms of stability, penetration potential, dispersion etc, the stability being the biggest issue obviously, even Skinceuticals get reviews complaining about it arriving oxidised despite having the most famous patented technology.
@@laur83 There's a lot to improve about it for sure! Personally, I've been using the Geek & Gorgeous one and I've had no issues with it oxidizing whatsoever - it arrived perfectly clear, I keep it in the fridge, and usually finish it up before it even darkens. That's definitely the best one I've found so far - if you can get over the typical "hot dog water" smell hahah
@minafedtheunicorns I also watch Dr. Shereene Idriss a cosmetic dermatologist on youtube and she says that using vitamin c before your sunscreen helps it work better. I’ve been using Naturium vitamin c complex serum and it is not sticky at all which a lot of them are and it’s in an opaque bottle so it has never oxidized for me.
I've been using Vitamin C for a solid year and I see no difference on my skin. I think James is right on this one. It's not the most effective ingredient out there and it's mostly marketing and advertising.
Trending ingredients is annoying to me for 2 reasons. When the ingredient is trending, it's in literally everything, so it's easy to potentially have too much in your routine. Then, when the ingredient isn't trending anymore, it feels like no products have it and, if you like that ingredient, it's a struggle to find the right product with that ingredient to add to your routine. 😅
Yea niacinamide was a huge one. It was in everything, and sometimes at too big of concentrations. And that cut out a portion of the consumers who are sensitive to it. My skin is fine with it but so many people's skin isnt
It's worse when the trending ingredient starts infiltrating even the products marketed for sensitive skin - for me it was HA, it wasn't in any of my products until all of a sudden it was everywhere and my go-to products were reformulated to have HA and now it's been hard to find alternatives that my skin is happy with.
@@DiMagnolia Yes, very much this!!! A lot of my former go-to products have been reformulated or just dropped and it's been hard to find replacements my skin is ok with 😭
I’m over 30 and just getting into skincare and makeup. I appreciate all the info that some folks might assume everyone already knows. @james you are my skincare guru, preach on 🙏 💜
i feel this. i have rosacea too and vitamin c did nothing for me and i feel like it even makes my rosacea worse. once i started focusing more on repairing my skin barrier and simplifying my routine, my skin started looking a lot better. just because it works for someone else, doesn't mean it will work for you. focus more on your individual skin type and that's when your skin will be happiest.
@@eleanorjenks7874 i feel that. i have very aggressive rosacea so i was literally breaking out in cysts all over my face for years because i was just listening to what everyone else was doing. still working on the scars from it. glad we both finally found what works for us!
Yes to this! I think we need to keep in mind that while actives do their job, there are usually some side effects/downsides (e.g increased sensitivity) and we all need to individually explore our own tolerance to these skin care ingredients.
Same! I found peptide serums worked better for me than vitamin c with similar claims of that vit c is supposed to do. Skin felt plumper and tighter without the irritation vit c caused my rosacea
I also have rosacea and tried vitamin c for a while but my skin was always lowkey inflamed. I switched to 10 % Azelaic acid and it did WONDERS for my skin. It is also a very potent anti oxidant which evens the skintone and battles hyperpigmentation, but it has a calming and anti redness effect and is especially recommended for rosacea prone skin. I apply it in the morning before my sun screen and I'd never switch back to vit c.
for all of the excellent and necessary reasons to wear sunscreen every day, knowing that not using it will essentially render a lot of your other skincare steps useless is super important for people to know.
I really struggle with sunscreen. I'm autistic and even the ones people swear up and down aren't greasy absolutely are and I can feel them and it stops me being able to function. I try to use the watery essence type from Korean brands and the Isntree one looks good! I'd just like to find one that sinks in like an actual moisturiser 😅 😅 Don't even get me started on body sunscreens..... absolutely sickeningly textured no matter what I buy!
I’m also autistic and struggled with the same things! I now use evy and I love it! Once it has dried and settled (usually max 15 min) I literally can’t feel that it’s there, even if I touch my face! I don’t know how readily available the brand is around the world tho. I haven’t tried their body sunscreen but I imagine it’s very similar.
The brand also says that it last for 8 hours if there’s not been any contact with water, and even if there has it doesn’t decrease the effectiveness much. They have the information on their website, I think there’s an English translation of it.
I haven't tried the one from Isntree yet, but I like the Benton Air Fit Sun Cream. I have dry skin, and this one dried down to a semi-matte finish for me. It was really nice and wasn't greasy.
Ive heard influencers say that you shouldnt buy skincare if the first ingredient is water or alcohol, and it just makes me wonder where all this misinformation comes from. Its all just really stupid😂
Right!? I’m pretty sure most of these actives would irritate the skin if they were just used alone in super concentrated forms. Not to mention how the product would be all dry and crispy.
My motto when consuming content lately has been clout is a heck of a drug. People are doing wilder and wilder stuff just to get invisible dopamine hits through the internet.
James, I just wanted to thank you for your videos. I finally put what I’ve been learning from you to use after a sudden and long-lasting bout of acne at 37 years old! Thanks to your videos my skin is clearing, hydrated, and has even tone! I still have some healing to do, but I feel more beautiful and confident than I have in about 3 years.
Perimenopause is awful. All the hormone instability of being a teenager. For me, it just changed how my skin reacts to products. Some became more effective while some standbys I needed to reduce or cut out altogether.
I finally gave up on Vitamin C, glad I did. I tried it 10 million ways from high end to the ordinary. I went a different route and avoid it all together. Later to find...It was actually causing most of my skin issues.
Thanks James, this video made me realize I should just stop using AHA/BHA & not force it to work for me. I’ve been having a bad breakout since I started using it, I kept saying to myself its just ‘purging’ but it was just too bad so I decided to stop & it’s only been a week but I can already feel my break outs calming down so I’m just gonna stay away from aha/bha & just stick to my retinol & niacinamide thats been working a lot for me
AHA/BHA was so popular I jumped on the bandwagon. It broke me out so bad it took me ages to figure out what was causing it. And then took months to recover. Now it is used very sparingly and only about once a month.
Not wanting to try and see the purging process through (to determine if its actual purging or a skin reaction) is a super valid reason to not continue with something. Purging can take over a week or so to really sort itself out but if it makes it unenjoyable, then thats what matters most. The best skin routine is one you enjoy! :) Also ik a lot of people are like "cycle retinol and exfoliating nights" and lowkey, that can be so irritating for so many people (idk why i see people recommend it so often; its something thats probably fine for some people but so many people do not do well with it)
If you haven't tried more than one or two products it could also just be the products you're using that are breaking you out and not the actual exfoliants.
if you are already using a retinol and your skin was improving with it there is no real reason to use aha/bha as retinol addresses the same concerns, and doubling up often increases skin reactivity bc of barrier damage. retinol works by increasing cellular turnover and helps w texture, tone, elasticity, and refines pores. these are all things aha/bha does so its redundant to have them all in one routine i find!
I love vitamin C. 😝 I stopped using everything almost a year ago bc I had a bad reaction to some face cloths I was using. Reintroduced everything one at a time. The vit C serum was the thing where I saw the biggest improvement. For me personally ofc. I'll never not use it now. 💜
Yess! I love ❤️ isntree spf..dont have the stick one tho..need to give it a try. must admit I'm guilty of not reapplying spf during the day unless its really sunny.
at the end of the day so much of using serums or creams is so subjective that it shouldnt discourage someone from trying new things, i started using the geek and gorgeous vit c serum and its really made a good difference for me personally, it was the only new addition to my routine and i saw improvement in the texture on my forehead, it really is all just subjective! except for sunscreen thats always a must
I'll just put my comment up there in case it helps - and because I would love to hear your review on it James !!! I m not autistic but still very sensitive, to texture, scent and such. My combo sensitive skin (prone to breakouts and rosacia) hates anything heavy yet needs moisture! I have tried MANY french, japanese and korean sunscreens, Beauty of Joseon and Isntree included (the orange one, not bad!), but I always come back to this one : "Pure block daily sunscreen EX" by A'pieu. Tried it at random since I was desperate and ordered a lot of different ones, in the 10 euro range or less, from Yessttyle XD It's so lightweight you forget you put it on, and even wonder if it will work... but it does, remarkably so. Very inexpensive as well, and very lightly scented. I keep coming back to it, it's the 3rd year. Now I am going to stop messing around and stick to it!
it’s taken me so long to find a sunscreen i like. i’m using one of the missha ones right now which i like enough, but i’m so oily that i always used to hate putting on skincare products at all 😭 everything just felt like another layer of grease. i feel like i’m gonna be on a hunt for a sunscreen my whole life so that i never hesitate to put it on like in the past. i hate feeling greasy and glazed and it makes my freshly washed bangs greasy within a few minutes.
I really like drmtlgy's sunscreen I use the untinted one and I find that I'm not greasy with it through out the day even if I reapply. I've tried lots of sunscreens and finally found one that checks all my boxes.
I have olive skin and VERY dry skin, so I get dark spots even if I never pick the spot or anything, and SPF is the main thing that helps my dark spots. It also helps my freckles not get as dark 🙌
awww freckles are so cute! but i get it, i have pale ass white oily skin, but my acne always goes away as VERY dark, small marks (i think i might not even have acne bc the traditional stuff doesn’t work for me, maybe it’s foliculitis). i honestly think it’s because i don’t sleep and i’m hella stressed and dehydrated, so my skin can’t fully heal itself and it just decides to way overproduce melanin bc my barrier isn’t gonna protect it and my blood won’t provide antioxidants to protect it so it’s just like… this raw skin? yeah, this shit is getting an umbrella and a hat we can’t risk it being touched by sunlight. mine are fading but it’s slow going and they tend to come back 😢 as inflammed lesions that literally won’t go away for months. i also pick my skin sometimes just by touching it and the hardened part comes off and then it scabs and i pick that too. i don’t pop or do it on purpose, it’s a subconscious anxiety thing where i touch my face and want to rub off any crispy bits. i also always rest my face (chin/forehead) on my hand and i’m starting to think that might be the cause of my acne cuz it’s in those spots… yikes. idk i’m struggling but sunscreen is so key.
@imawakemymindisalive13 I was just teased a lot as a kid and they always said I had dirt on my face so that's how I see them on my skin. Its funny cuz on others I think freckles can be cute, but I hate them on me, I don't like how uneven my skin tone looks🤷♀️
Urea is my favorite skincare ingredient!!! I hope people keep avoiding it because of the name tho, keeps it reasonably priced. Gold Bond urea-focused face + body creams are incredible - only ole henricksen has come close to GB for results, and ive finished up several high end moisturizers in the past couple years.
Have the same sort of love hate with vitamin c. I really want to love it and keep going back to it, but i never found one that did anything for me really. And i'm so here for your beautiful, dewy, radiant skin!
I definitely used to fall into the category of feeling like I needed to use certain ingredients because everyone was saying so. I'm finally just choosing products that are targeting my personal needs and have ingredients that I know work well for my skin. For example, I'm much more aware of how many products I'm using that have Hyaluronic Acid or Niacinamide in them. I don't need that ingredient in more than one product, but it's harder to find products that don't contain those ingredients now.
1) sunscreen: if I am at home all day, and don’t sit near a window or go outside at all, is it safe to not wear sunscreen? I usually apply 50+ uva5* whenever I go outside, whether it’s for 5 minutes or a few hours. I burn really easily, but don’t get any signs of sun damage indoors, and usually have curtains closed because I get migraines easily. 2) face sweat. It’s gross I know! I am starting perimenopause and I’ve always been a bit of a sweaty chin/upper lip person, but recently it’s got so bad it sometimes causes spots or irritation 😢 is there anything I can do outside of deodorants (which don’t seem to work, I’ve tried the anti-sweat wipes that are supposed to last a few days-weeks and they sting and only work for about 2 days maximum)… are these things I need to see a doctor for?? Because getting an appointment right now is like finding a £50 note on the pavement 😢. Thank you if anyone has any answers! 💜
For the first question, Lab Muffin Beauty Science actually has a video addressing that very topic! It’s called “Do you need to wear sunscreen indoors? An analysis” hope that helps ^_^
I have the second issue too above my lips and sometimes below my lips too, drives me nuts!! I end up wiping at them all day which I’m sure doesn’t help at all
I've spent the last 3 years looking for a sunscreen I actually like and I've FINALLY found one this week actually! Skin1004's SPF50 centella one. It's so perfect. I'm pale AF and legit the tint is the perfect colour on my skin. 🥺 And no eye sting because it's mineral omg! La Roche Posay was my fav but it stained my clothes so dark yellow I had to stop using it bc it ruined all my white tops.
I also used a vitamin c serum from Klairs. But it just didn’t work for me and somehow I couldn’t include it properly into my skincare routine. I just didn’t know what to do with it 😂Maybe I should give it a second chance.. but actually I’m very happy with my hyaluronic acid serum, niacinamide serum and my actives right know 💁🏻♀️ And what I noticed is your community consists of very peaceful people who just talk about skincare and their experiences. It’s so refreshing I love it 💖
I live in Iceland and on normal days I just settle for a moisturiser with a bit spf in it. If it’s really sunny and I’ll be outside for a long time then I bring out the spf 50+ but otherwise I don’t bother
It took me 6 years with sunscreen everyday and vitamin A cream from my Lupus doctor to remove sunspots and Lupus scars, but now i see the results and im happy about the work i have done with only those 2 important products for me.
I agree about Vitamin C, I have tried to love it and failed miserably 😢 however I love alpha arbutin, niacinamide and tranexamic acid are my go to ingredients now 🎉
YESSSS about vitamin C I used to work at Sephora and I used to tell my clients that is one ingredient that you are “tricked” into using the most often. So many of my clients thought they needed a Vitamin C for skincare cause online says it’s a cornerstone of EVERY good skincare routine which I also said I disagreed with. Not only what you said about acne and dark spot (which is my exact experience along with loads of irritation) there other anti oxidants you can use, but I saw clients that used very strong vitamin Cs in the morning, did not use SPF 100, and came into the store later that day with sunspots she did not have that morning. TLDR: thank you for saying that vitamin c is not a cornerstone in every skincare routine and you can have a good routine without vitamin c
I love the cosrx snail mucin, I will keep using it I don’t care what people say 😂 I love trying new products, and I find ones that do help my skin, but I have my few staples that no one can take away from me lol
In terms of suncream, i apply everyday but only ever re-apply in the summer. I use Garnier's 50 SPF clear suncream because i'm black and all the other creams leave a white tint on my face which I hate. it does leave my face slightly oily but I don't really mind
My skin just soaks up hyaluronic acid, any budget friendly recommendations for glycerin products in the UK? I have very VERY dry skin so really need something good
Heliocare SPF 50 gel is great. I agree about Vitamin C- it hasn’t worked for my pigmentation. I prefer Alpha Arbutin. HA is so overrated- it can make my skin dry. Glycerin rocks ❤️
Hey James! If you can find the vitamin C in powder form from the french brand Garancia called L'appel de la forêt, I think you could like it ! No oxydation issues and can be mixed with a serum or a cream, not necessarily very acidic, so perfect for sensitive skin 😊
Unfortunately, in Australia, there's not really a product to help you reapply spf when you've got a full face of makeup. Especially if spf makes you pily and greasy like it does for me. There's not even a spf spray for oily skin that you can put *over* makeup. So hpw do I reapply without removing all my makeup and redping the lot from scratch. I can't do that when I'm out. Note: I also have to use loose powder on my foundation due to being oily and sweaty.
I need to know how to reapply sunscreen as well when im wearing a full face of makeup and I cant afford to try a bunch of different products to find out
I’ve started getting some painful redness with my Hyaluronic acid serum and have dry skin… I’ve been trying to find an alternative but I’m struggling 😮💨
Have you tried the Olehenrikson vitamin c serum? You might like that one if you’ve not found one you like but like others within the same line. I know you and Robert use the eye cream and color correcting stick in the same line, might be worth a try? It’s one of my faves ❤
Took me years to find a sunscreen that I liked and isntree is the one. I literally won't use anything else again. It works, so as you say I'm sticking with it!
I have dry and sensitive skin. Every single sunscreen I've ever used has caused an allergic reaction on my face - even hypoallergenic ones. It's such a struggle! I'm also pregnant. Do you have any recommendations?
okay, from what i know about sunscreens, the U.S. has like less than 10 approved filters, but other countries have soooooo many more. i recommend looking at ingredients lists of sunscreens you reacted to and checking 1. the filters 2. any inactives that may be present in all of them. it honestly doesn’t make sense for someone to be allergic to both zinc and titanium dioxide and the chemical filters, although totally possible, but likely coincidental and not the same genetic trait causing the reactions. it’s possible there’s a texture ingredient in common you react strongly to, my first guess would be to try non- U.S. filters, and compare ingredients and patch test with other things with that ingredient. like your own science experiment 😂, i guess that counts as human experimentation but probably not legally. if you seriously can’t find anything that works, you can go to a dermatologist- they are expensive so that’s why i recommend searching on your own first. also maybe do some research to find information online and compare, what’s different about the products that give you less of a reaction? another thing could be to try powder sunscreen- it doesn’t give full coverage since there’s gaps in the layer of filters but until you find a sunscreen you can wear, make use of hats, sunglasses, long sleeves/pants, staying in the shade, staying inside, and even using your hair as sun protection if you aren’t scared of UV damage to your hair. also, using any kind of tinted moisturizer, foundation, concealer can provide minimal sun protection and so can antioxidants, these aren’t a solution but they can be ab effective way to mitigate sun damage until you find your answer.
btw the best form of sun protection is avoiding sun exposure in the first place, sunscreen isn’t as effective as staying inside but it’s important to use just in case because you can’t avoid the sun entirely. it’s kind of like avoiding pregnancy in the sense that abstinence will guarantee results but that’s not really the way everyone wants to live life, hence protection and birth control to prevent it when you do things that risk it. i know that’s kind of an out there analogy, but avoiding sun damage is pretty similar- stay out of the sun but if you can’t, sun protection. also don’t stress too much, as stress can damage your skin too! i really hope you find a solution! (also P.S. it’s best to stay away from exfoliants, retinoids, and anything they can dry or irritate your skin /damage your barrier because those things increase UV sensitivity. keeping your skin hydrated and moisturized at all times can help with your barrier- slugging and washing your face only at night can be a game changer too.
Ok I heard one this past week that blew me away bc it was news to me AND I had been doing it EVERYDAY! I love Tower28’s SOS rescue spray with Hypochlorous acid, and apparently you’re not supposed to apply that before VitC products! Who knew?? I guess the H acid deactivates the VitC? Here’s what it says on the Tower28 site: Can I use SOS Spray with skincare actives like vitamin C? If you're using an active like vitamin C as part of your skincare routine, we recommend using SOS Spray BEFORE any actives (allowing it to dry down fully first). The hero ingredient in SOS Spray (hypochlorous acid) is super fast acting and once it dries down it won't interact with any of your other skincare products (including actives like vitamin C!) Now, I heard to wait 15 min after spraying to apply the VitC, that’s just too long for me, plus I prefer to apply all skincare to dampened skin, so I’ve just decided to switch using the Tower28 to evenings when I don’t use VitC. Hope this helps anyone else out there dousing their faces with it right before applying their fave VitC product!
I've using up a lot of skincare but been on a Tret formula with Azelaic Acid & Niacinimide from Dermatica . I'm using T.O Multi Peptide & Copper Peptide 1% now instead of vitc . 👏😊🙌
True! I love to spray some mist on my skin before using hyaluronic acid toner/serum. It makes it glide more smoothly and feel more hydrating.. Ps. I have Dehydrated Sensitive Oily Acne-prone skin..
As a licensed esthetician I couldn't agree with more in this video! Especially with Vitamin C. I alternate chemical exfoliants and retinol to help with my hyperpigmentation. Haven't found a vitamin c that my skin likes yet.
I feel the same exact thing about Vitamin C. I used the Galactomyces Vitamin C serum by Some by Mi and it worked, but stopped using it for awhile due to going on vacation. The next time I used it, my skin just suddenly couldn't tolerate Vitamin C anymore. I kept buying vitamin C serums hoping i would find "the one", but anytime i used product with Vitamin C, my skin would react. Instead I've transitioned to using serums with Αlpha arbutin instead (though it takes longer), and focus mostly on moisture. I also tried using the viral COSRX snail mucin because it's moisturizing , but my skin also reacted. I then found out that if you have an allergy to dust mites, you're likely to also react to snail mucin. It's very much trial and error and finding out what works for your skin. Any recommendations for Vitamin C for sensitive skin girlies? Or should i just give up the hunt and stick to what's working right now 🤔
The jumiso pure c 5.5 glow serum works well for my sensitive skin, it's got 5% ascorbic acid, another vitamin c derivative, alpha arbutin as well as vitamin E and ferulic acid to help with seeing results and antioxidant power. Products with tranexamic acid have also been good as a sub-in for vit c.
James, is there anything that can be done about hormonal acne? Ive tried every product at this point to get rid of it, and the ONLY THING that worked was birth control pills. But I didn't want to be on BC forever so I went off it and now Im always "broken out" no matter what. Help!!
all acne is technically hormonal, as hormones trigger your skin to inflame as a reaction to an irritant or bacterial infection (trapping bacteria breakouts in a pimple prevents it from spreading- important cuz otherwise they might take over your whole body). there’s a couple things to look into when it comes to reducing hormonal triggers, although some of it can be purely genetic and it’s in no way your fault! obviously, sleep, stress, diet, and hydration (and exercise i suppose) are key for everything in life and that basically goes without saying but yeah. i notice every time my skin is clearing up and then breaks out all over again, it’s because i’ve been hella stressed and when i get 1-3 hours of sleep multiple days in a row. my doctor told me dairy has no impact on acne, i haven’t been isolating my variables when i’m trying new things to improve it so i cant comment on specific acne triggering foods but some foods cause mildly inflammatory allergic reactions that can exacerbate breakouts- it can be different for everyone and you can get your blood tested for that but a risk that comes with cutting these out is that you might have built tolerance to them over time and once you reintroduce them (bc who wants to live without bread or ice cream forever?) it gets worse. i don’t have any experience with this though. another key thing is your microbiome. i’m pretty sure there are more bacteria in your body than cells and they play a MASSIVE role in your body’s function, hence the vagus nerve having a gut-brain connection, and even down to your skin’s micro-biome having bacteria that keep the balance of Cutibacterium Acnes in check and prevent massive growth (hence preventing acne). antibiotics for acne can sometimes kill the good bacteria too, and the acne bacteria can become resistant. i’m using antibiotics at the moment and it seemed like it was helping but alas… stress and sleep quickly undid all of the progress i had. which leads me to believe topical skincare is a very small portion of it. i don’t have a degree in dermatology and i didn’t go to medical school and i’m not an esthetician, i’ve done a lot of research but always fact check with credible sources and take everything i say with a grain of salt. taking probiotics or eating probiotic and prebiotic rich foods can help rebalance your microbiome and it’s really expensive to get your microbiome mapped, it’s still such an overlooked aspect of the human body, but it’s important! environmental irritants like pollution, hard water, and allergens can cause problems too. it’s really hard to identify if your acne is being triggered by an allergen, an internal imbalance, a stressor, or something like wearing a full face of makeup done with dirty brushes from the floor of the car that then gets cried off and you go to bed without washing your face, but more often than not acne is triggered by an external factor, because hormones have made your skin picky and sensitive and the smallest thing can cause a breakout. adult acne or what’s typically known as hormonal acne is tough, and there’s a million different things that you don’t know about it. dermatologists can help, but i remember once i went to a pediatrician when i was first becoming concerned with my acne and she didn’t even look at my skin, just prescribed stuff. dermatology is different but there’s so much they don’t know about you that sometimes it isn’t worth it if you’ve already tried. most people with hormonal acne will almost always have it until they hit menopause because that’s just the way their hormones were set up. and yes, acne is a disease, but just like many others, you can be genetically predisposed to it. it’s painful and it can feel awful and it can hamper your confidence, and i don’t have clear skin so i cant really share a miracle solution. and i don’t know you, so i cant fully offer advice or help. my best tip is to do your research, be aware of yourself and your skin, and love yourself and understand you are beautiful even with acne. acne is one of your body’s defense mechanisms, and that’s beautiful. i’ve never taken BC and honestly i think i’m probably too fragile for more medications (i’m too fragile to do almost anything without being sore, i might be losing muscle due to not sleeping), and i have a feeling my acne (or foliculitis) trigger differs from yours. i’m sorry i cant give a perfect answer but we are in this together, and i promise one day we will both love our skin!
I don't follow trends since that boom of skincare stuff back in the 90s to 2000s that left me with a bad allergic reaction, instances of breakouts and tight, dry skin? While skincare has gone a long way, following the trend on ingredients to me kinda is a trial and error phase in choosing a product for my own use. Some ingredients work, some do not. I tend to go with what works for me and stick with it - snail mucin, centella/cica, niacinamide, retinoids, exfoliating acids, sunscreen. Still trying to find a Vit C serum that doesn't irritate my skin though. Quite annoying is when a trending ingredient loses its limelight, it's a little bit hard to find them. Snail mucin is one, and thank goodness a local skin apothecary still incorporates it in the serum that I have been using for quite some time now. A few K-beauty brands still do it, and I hope they still retain it.
Going along with the last point, I’ve seen a lot of people who think the stronger the percentage or concentration of an ingredient the better. I made this mistake and irritated my skin to hell. It’s better for most cases to be consistent with a more gentle formulation than to decimate your skin barrier and then struggle to recover.
absolutely. generally it's better to have gentler treatments and products done more consistently, and then have some specialized care that is done weekly, bi-weekly, etc for concerns that are more relative to your skin specifically. for someone struggling with pore care maybe that'll be a clay mask on very sebum-y areas once a week or an oil massage to help those SF come out.
I have soooooo many sunscreen sticks that I feel super guilty not reapplying despite the fact that I’m indoors the whole day. Any tips for making sure I reapply?
I was gonna comment about how snail mucin is overhyped and you actually covered that too 😂😂 I saw a video so I don't know if it's credible or not.. but those who have dust mite allergy might also have reaction against snail mucin too. So as James said, it it suits you keep using it.. But it doesn't have to be holy grail too.. you can use other ingredients if snail mucin doesn't suit you.
Was watching this while doing my skincare this morning. As you discussed sunscreen guess what I was applying, yup, isntree hyaluronic acid watery sun gel! 😂
I was looking for this comment here!!!! I’m the same way! How am I supposed to reapply my entire face of makeup constantly during my day when I’m at work because I had to remove it to reapply my sunscreen? Sprays get into my curly hair and just make it gross and make my makeup look disgusting anyways… I’ve heard the powder sunscreen doesn’t work, but I would still have to reapply my blush and contour/bronzer and maybe even concealer… it’s just a mess.
To reapply, I use cushion/compacts with a high spf, from Asian brands. Avene and Neutrogena also has an spf 50 compact. Also, I use Soleil Toujour’s makeup setting spray with broad spectrum spf if I’m in a pinch or to reset the reapplied spf cushion compact. This is what works for me, and just sharing.😂
Thank you for saying what you said about Vitamin C. I have eczema prone skin, not too bad. My flair ups are pretty minor. Vitamin C, no matter the product or brands I used, my face would start to itch and would get extremely irritated.
Whenever I tried reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours it just makes my pores clogged and breakout 😩. Like are we supposed to cleanse first? Especially with this summer heat
Not supposed to cleanse, the whole point of reapplication is compounding the coverage and covering the holes in you previous layer. Double cleansing at the end of the day to remove all that is a must though.
I found a sunscreen I love and even then I apply it only in the morning and I don't wear it when it's overcast unless I'm planning on being outside beyond walking my dog. I should really get better about it lol
I have dry skin in a dry climate and hyaluronic acid makes my skin look lifeless, I lose plumpness, my pores become enlarged and I look older, my face looks dry and oily at the same time, it's horrific. After months of using different formulations of hyaluronic acid, I can tell you now, it's insanely dehydrating and according to several dermatologists, low molecular hyaluronic acid does suck the moisture from the deeper levels of your skin. The moment I stopped using hyaluronic acid, my skin returned to normal and everything described above was resolved. I'm sure it does wonders for some people, but it's definitely not for everyone, and you cannot make such promises.
My skin does not like Vitamin C. If the particular product doesn't irritate me, I end up not seeing any difference. I prefer Copper Peptides in the morning and Tretinoin at night for my actives. Just could not get on the Vitamin C train
Niacinamide gives me massive really painful spots. It's in so many products. I had bought so many new products and couldn't figure out what I was using to cause the spots. I had to Google the ingredients in all my products and stop using anything with niacinamide in it. I haven't had one since. But I'm so restricted in what I can use now as it is in everything
You can use incidecoder to find products that work for you. It’s a huge database of lots of products and their ingredients. You just put a product type/category into the search bar, (serum, moisturiser, sunscreen, etc.) then click search. Then you can filter the results and choose ingredients to include or exclude. It’s very useful for finding products if you have allergies or are sensitive to certain ingredients.
Reapplying also depends on where you live and what time of year and how much you’re outside, for me who lives in Denmark which is almost alway a 1/2 in the uv index as well as being inside a lot, reapplying isn’t necessary
But also important to wear sunscreen if there's snow, as the reflection can amplify the rays. And wearing eye protection, as snow blindness is a real thing too!
Viatamin c hurt my skin cause it is so sensitive and dry. 😅 ive been using peach and lily and cosrx products. As well as a cleanser i bought from a farmers market actually 😅 Hylauronic acid does miracles for my dry skin. That and the cosrx snail mucin cream
Something I've always wondered about reapplying sunscreen. I'm always hearing "reapply throughout the day" but if you're wearing make up, how would you do that and is it even necessary? Doesn't the makeup protect the skin from the sun?
Regarding reapplication of sunscreen while wearing makeup, there are setting sprays that contain SPF, and there are also powdered SPFs that you can apply to the face using a makeup brush. It is necessary if you are spending time outdoors, even on cloudy days.
Excuse me i LOVE the cosrx snail mucin products and the Future Wise products. My partner still uses the cosrx moisturizer and i use the Future Wise slug balm almost every night. I hwve crazy dry skin so i loooove it I really like you, but even if you decided you hated snail mucin products id still use them😂 theyre just really good, and i never really buy anything because of someone else, i buy them cuz i think i will like them🤷♀️
What I struggle with in terms of reapplying sunscreen is how do I reapply it when I'm wearing makeup? If I just put it on over my foundation and powder it looks AWFUL so instead I try to avoid going outside after about 10AM. 😮💨
I need help with this as well. I finally found a face sunscreen i love that doesn't make my rosacea burn but on the occasions i wear a full face of makeup how do i reapply the sunscreen?
I love skincare but I’m so guilty of not wearing sunscreen. I just can’t find the right one, everyone I use is so oily and greasy and breaks me out :(((
I wish I could help. I like the oily ones because I am super dry, but the mineral ones break me out, so 😂use chemical sunscreens. Have you tried Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen? I feel like that is not greasy, or their watery sunscreen? They are pricey, but they do an excellent job. I am an awful person and don’t reapply, and I have never been sunburnt on my face since I started using Supergoop!
Try la roche posay anthelios invisible fluid! The one with the yellow Part on the lable. It's not greasy, not sticky, not shiny it's my absolute favourite
Does anyone know of a product that helps with milia?? Ive tried so many different products but nothing helps, and my milia is the main skin problem that bugs me.
My problem with my hyperpigmentation is largely due to hormones. I do have some due to age, not wearing sunscreen when I was a sun worshiper, but the vast majority is hormones. I know this because I’m on birth control and when I’m not on birth control (aka when I was trying to get pregnant etc) my skin was so much more even. And due to medical shit I have to continue to use birth control until I hit menopause. 🤷♀️ Now, the ONE product I found that actually worked, you could se the changes within the first week and it kept improving with constant use. Of course when I stopped using it, BOOM the discoloration came back. I have tried to find products like it with vit-c but nothing has come close. This was waaaaaayyyy back in the early 2,000s and they discontinued the product many, many years ago. Anyway, it was suggested to me by a lady at Sephora, she was spot on- pun intended 😂 It was this little bottle with an iridescent liquid but the main ingredient was vit-c. It was non-greasy, very thin but not watery and worked wonderfully. Idk why they discontinued it and I wish I could find something like it again. I believe L’Oréal made it and I think it was a pump. Back then the only skincare products I used was face wash and Ponds moisturizer every morning and night. Sigh… anyway, I’d be forever grateful if anyone could recommend a product like that. I’ve used The Ordinary, tons of different ones from Ipsy, ELF, other L’Oréal products, etc etc and nothing has come close! The only thing I can think of is maybe the amount of vit-c in it was more than other products? I’ve tried looking online here and there and I can’t find it.
There are stick sunscreens as well as sunscreen sprays. If you're not wearing makeup, dont use those as your sunscreen though as they are not as effective as using an actual suncreen and should be only used for reapplying
Michelle from lab muffin’s HA video! ruclips.net/user/shorts0iHWXHBhhlU?si=muqqIm9MexqWDMIC
I think that large body of research (if you can even call industry funded studies that) is negated by the variability you get on the market in terms of stability, penetration potential, dispersion etc, the stability being the biggest issue obviously, even Skinceuticals get reviews complaining about it arriving oxidised despite having the most famous patented technology.
it’s a great ingredient, but it needs to be able to be stabilised better and not oxidise. and be less expensive for higher concentrations 😭
So frustrating!! I have very sensitive skin and can no longer find some of the products I rely on 😭
Yea niacinamide was a huge one.
A lot of my former go-to products have been reformulated or just dropped and it's been hard to find replacements my skin is ok with 😭
@julialloyd-cowden oooof. Yea ive heard some peoples skin doesnt get along well with hyaluronic acid. Thats extra difficult since its EVERYWHERE
i love the way u talk about skincare. u are showing, that every skin is different and acknowledging, that not everything works for everyone 🖤
I have the same! Any active that’s above a few % and it just causes a flush. My routine is based around skin nourishing ingredients.
The sad thing is that sunscreens need to form a stable film on top of your skin.
The super mild sun essence by scinic might be a good fit for you. Idk where it’s all sold, but I found it on Amazon and it’s under $10.
@Beeleeteecee haha yeah I have suuuper dry skin so I don't even want to think about that🤣
My motto when consuming content lately has been clout is a heck of a drug. People are doing wilder and wilder stuff just to get invisible dopamine hits through the internet.
@honeybee347 oh yeah, Johnny silvestri comes to mind😒 I hate attention, so it truly does baffle me when ppl say and do anything for attention
Well I don't like drying Alchools very much, but fat Alchools are fine.
Now water is necessary to add moisture.
Oh, James, please don't ever stop making these videos.
There is so much misinformation out there, we need you.❤
I finally gave up on Vitamin C, glad I did.
Also ik a lot of people are like "cycle retinol and exfoliating nights" and lowkey, that can be so irritating for so many people (idk why i see people recommend it so often; its something thats probably fine for some people but so many people do not do well with it)
If you haven't tried more than one or two products it could also just be the products you're using that are breaking you out and not the actual exfoliants.
if you are already using a retinol and your skin was improving with it there is no real reason to use aha/bha as retinol addresses the same concerns, and doubling up often increases skin reactivity bc of barrier damage. retinol works by increasing cellular turnover and helps w texture, tone, elasticity, and refines pores. these are all things aha/bha does so its redundant to have them all in one routine i find!
If people are upset that skin care is 80% water, they're gonna be real upset at how much water they are. 😂
Exactly 🤣💯
I love vitamin C. 😝 I stopped using everything almost a year ago bc I had a bad reaction to some face cloths I was using. Reintroduced everything one at a time. The vit C serum was the thing where I saw the biggest improvement. For me personally ofc. I'll never not use it now. 💜
Yess! I love ❤️ isntree spf..dont have the stick one tho..need to give it a try. must admit I'm guilty of not reapplying spf during the day unless its really sunny.
at the end of the day so much of using serums or creams is so subjective that it shouldnt discourage someone from trying new things, i started using the geek and gorgeous vit c serum and its really made a good difference for me personally, it was the only new addition to my routine and i saw improvement in the texture on my forehead, it really is all just subjective! except for sunscreen thats always a must
Could you do an updated rosacea skincare video? I didn’t even know about azelaic acid until recently
Tried it at random since I was desperate and ordered a lot of different ones, in the 10 euro range or less, from Yessttyle XD
It's so lightweight you forget you put it on, and even wonder if it will work... but it does, remarkably so.
Can't see freckles and not think of frog bellies that I've dissected in high school and college. 🤣
Same!
What a fantastic, informative post! Thank you, James. Dr. Michelle Wong is amazing, and yup, I've got that Isntree sunscreen in my purse!!!
2 - I use a tiny bit of solid antiperspirant on my upper lip. Nothing else seems to work.
For the first question, Lab Muffin Beauty Science actually has a video addressing that very topic! It’s called “Do you need to wear sunscreen indoors? An analysis” hope that helps ^_^
I have the second issue too above my lips and sometimes below my lips too, drives me nuts!! I end up wiping at them all day which I’m sure doesn’t help at all
@@teri2466 I’ve tried that and it just seems to clog my pores :( glad it works for you though! 💜
@@mah4angel thank you so much!
Good information, James. Thank you. 💜💜
I love the Skin1004 sunscreen!
What sunblock is best to reapply on top of makeup?
I also used a vitamin c serum from Klairs. But it just didn’t work for me and somehow I couldn’t include it properly into my skincare routine. I just didn’t know what to do with it 😂Maybe I should give it a second chance.. but actually I’m very happy with my hyaluronic acid serum, niacinamide serum and my actives right know 💁🏻♀️
And what I noticed is your community consists of very peaceful people who just talk about skincare and their experiences.
Happy Friday y'all! 💜
I have very VERY dry skin so really need something good
Thank you , James 💜
Thanks!! 💛💛💕💕
Ok ok sunscreen. What sunscreen do you recommend when wearing make up for the reapplying bit once make up is on your face Xx
This ^. How does one reapply SPF over a full face of makeup?
Right???
What is the best product for hyperpigmentation?
Unfortunately, in Australia, there's not really a product to help you reapply spf when you've got a full face of makeup.
Especially if spf makes you pily and greasy like it does for me. There's not even a spf spray for oily skin that you can put *over* makeup. So hpw do I reapply without removing all my makeup and redping the lot from scratch. I can't do that when I'm out.
Note: I also have to use loose powder on my foundation due to being oily and sweaty.
I need to know how to reapply sunscreen as well when im wearing a full face of makeup and I cant afford to try a bunch of different products to find out
@christineh3169 exactly in the same boat and also there are no products really in Australia that can go on top of makeup at all
I’m not sure if it’s for oily skin but Ultra Violette has a sunscreen spray. I haven’t personally used it but my friend does and she loves it
I’ve started getting some painful redness with my Hyaluronic acid serum and have dry skin… I’ve been trying to find an alternative but I’m struggling 😮💨
Very informative 😍 especially about hyaluronic acid. Literally yesterday I was kicking myself for not applying it to a wet face 😅😅
Literally watching this while I’m doing my morning skincare and applying my isntree sunscreen 🧴🫧
@@imawakemymindisalive13 you're awesome! Thank you ❤️ 😊
btw the best form of sun protection is avoiding sun exposure in the first place, sunscreen isn’t as effective as staying inside but it’s important to use just in case because you can’t avoid the sun entirely. it’s kind of like avoiding pregnancy in the sense that abstinence will guarantee results but that’s not really the way everyone wants to live life, hence protection and birth control to prevent it when you do things that risk it. i know that’s kind of an out there analogy, but avoiding sun damage is pretty similar- stay out of the sun but if you can’t, sun protection. also don’t stress too much, as stress can damage your skin too! i really hope you find a solution!
(also P.S. it’s best to stay away from exfoliants, retinoids, and anything they can dry or irritate your skin /damage your barrier because those things increase UV sensitivity. keeping your skin hydrated and moisturized at all times can help with your barrier- slugging and washing your face only at night can be a game changer too.
Here’s what it says on the Tower28 site:
Can I use SOS Spray with skincare actives like vitamin C?
If you're using an active like vitamin C as part of your skincare routine, we recommend using SOS Spray BEFORE any actives (allowing it to dry down fully first). The hero ingredient in SOS Spray (hypochlorous acid) is super fast acting and once it dries down it won't interact with any of your other skincare products (including actives like vitamin C!)
Now, I heard to wait 15 min after spraying to apply the VitC, that’s just too long for me, plus I prefer to apply all skincare to dampened skin, so I’ve just decided to switch using the Tower28 to evenings when I don’t use VitC.
I am interested in your review of DermaCo Sunscreen with 10% Vitamin C +5% Niacinamide
How do you reapply sunscreen during the day when you are wearing makeup during the workday?
How do you reapply SPF if you have make up on all day though? 4:03
LOVE The isntree duo.
True! I love to spray some mist on my skin before using hyaluronic acid toner/serum. It makes it glide more smoothly and feel more hydrating..
Ps. I have Dehydrated Sensitive Oily Acne-prone skin..
How how how do you reapply spf over makeup??? I have never found a good answer to this ❤
Thanks for posting
As a licensed esthetician I couldn't agree with more in this video! Especially with Vitamin C. I alternate chemical exfoliants and retinol to help with my hyperpigmentation. Haven't found a vitamin c that my skin likes yet.
Hey! Will the sun screen stick work over makeup?
Yes I am always hesitant when ingredients are 'trending'!
Hope everyone has a good day 😸✨️
I have soooooo many sunscreen sticks that I feel super guilty not reapplying despite the fact that I’m indoors the whole day. Any tips for making sure I reapply?
Do it every time you have a wee 😂 works for me!
Sunscreen inside?!?😶
@@DebbieTDPI live near the equator, and my office has big windows so I continue to wear sunscreen inside yes. Plus, I go out for lunch often!
Set an alarm
Sunscreen sticks have been shown to not be effective until like over 20 swipes. Stick to liquid sunscreen
I was gonna comment about how snail mucin is overhyped and you actually covered that too 😂😂
I saw a video so I don't know if it's credible or not.. but those who have dust mite allergy might also have reaction against snail mucin too.
So as James said, it it suits you keep using it..
But it doesn't have to be holy grail too.. you can use other ingredients if snail mucin doesn't suit you.
I also tried the Sunday Riley’s or drunk elephant vitamin C serum and I didn’t see any improvement ..I’m glad I’m not the only one 😅
Was watching this while doing my skincare this morning. As you discussed sunscreen guess what I was applying, yup, isntree hyaluronic acid watery sun gel! 😂
Hello . Good Evening James 💜Happy Friday 💜
What I can’t work out is how to reapply sunscreen when I have a whole face of makeup.
I remember one of the twins has a whole video on that
To reapply, I use cushion/compacts with a high spf, from Asian brands.
This reminded me that I have the ordinary vit c powder to use up. I wonder if anyone's had any results using it with their moisturizer or serums?
So James... How do you feel about the Amazon Basics skin care line?
Whenever I tried reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours it just makes my pores clogged and breakout 😩. Like are we supposed to cleanse first? Especially with this summer heat
Not supposed to cleanse, the whole point of reapplication is compounding the coverage and covering the holes in you previous layer. Double cleansing at the end of the day to remove all that is a must though.
Use those sebum powder or oil paper from kbeauty
I'm sure it does wonders for some people, but it's definitely not for everyone, and you cannot make such promises.
how do i reaply sunscreen when im wearing makeup ?? 😢
Beautypie Super Healthy Skin Daily Moisturiser is one and if my memory is correct many of the Geek and Gorgeous 101 Line is also Niacinamide free
@eleanorjenks7874 thank you I'll give it a try!
How do I reapply sunscreen over my makeup????
Viatamin c hurt my skin cause it is so sensitive and dry. 😅 ive been using peach and lily and cosrx products. As well as a cleanser i bought from a farmers market actually 😅
Hylauronic acid does miracles for my dry skin. That and the cosrx snail mucin cream
Something I've always wondered about reapplying sunscreen. I'm always hearing "reapply throughout the day" but if you're wearing make up, how would you do that and is it even necessary? Doesn't the makeup protect the skin from the sun?
Lab Muffin has a video on exactly this. Highly recommend watching it.
@@katherinemorelle7115 Thanks, I'll check it out
Regarding reapplication of sunscreen while wearing makeup, there are setting sprays that contain SPF, and there are also powdered SPFs that you can apply to the face using a makeup brush. It is necessary if you are spending time outdoors, even on cloudy days.
is the Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel good for acne prone skin? I feel like most sunscreens break me out :(
Excuse me i LOVE the cosrx snail mucin products and the Future Wise products. My partner still uses the cosrx moisturizer and i use the Future Wise slug balm almost every night. I hwve crazy dry skin so i loooove it
I really like you, but even if you decided you hated snail mucin products id still use them😂 theyre just really good, and i never really buy anything because of someone else, i buy them cuz i think i will like them🤷♀️
I work overnights. 8pm - 5 am. Do I still need to wear sunscreen?
What I struggle with in terms of reapplying sunscreen is how do I reapply it when I'm wearing makeup? If I just put it on over my foundation and powder it looks AWFUL so instead I try to avoid going outside after about 10AM. 😮💨
I need help with this as well. I finally found a face sunscreen i love that doesn't make my rosacea burn but on the occasions i wear a full face of makeup how do i reapply the sunscreen?
I love skincare but I’m so guilty of not wearing sunscreen. I just can’t find the right one, everyone I use is so oily and greasy and breaks me out :(((
Try the facetheory spf whipped moisturiser xx
I wish I could help. I like the oily ones because I am super dry, but the mineral ones break me out, so 😂use chemical sunscreens. Have you tried Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen? I feel like that is not greasy, or their watery sunscreen? They are pricey, but they do an excellent job. I am an awful person and don’t reapply, and I have never been sunburnt on my face since I started using Supergoop!
so same. i recently got myself the eucerin oil control spf 50 sunscreen, recommend it a LOT
Try the Korean brands - Beauty of Joseon, Cosrx, Purito, Skin1004... & Isintree of course 😊
Try la roche posay anthelios invisible fluid! The one with the yellow Part on the lable. It's not greasy, not sticky, not shiny it's my absolute favourite
I personally do my own skincare routine but when my face is dry I use my personal serum with high grade aloe vera for moisturizer.
Niacinamide, Retinol and tranexamic acid is my ❤love❤
Does anyone know of a product that helps with milia?? Ive tried so many different products but nothing helps, and my milia is the main skin problem that bugs me.
I need to know!!! How do you reapply sunscreen with makeup on????? I have no clue!!!! 🤨🤨🤨
I know you said you wouldnt try anymore vit c but maybe dr shereens serum could be interesting?
Ok but I swear that if I put my HA cerave moisturiser on, straight out the shower in a steamy bathroom it works way better?! Is it just in my head 😂?
Question.....how do you reapply sunscreen when you wear makeup?
There are stick sunscreens as well as sunscreen sprays. If you're not wearing makeup, dont use those as your sunscreen though as they are not as effective as using an actual suncreen and should be only used for reapplying
