Is the jump to the MX worth it? Also noticed you’ve played around with the mercuryx. What’s your preference MX or MercuryX? Thanks for letting me ask all these questions 😂
In my setup, I've come to love the sound of Strymon pedals > 2 Amps > Fractal Audio VP4 I like modulation effects, delay 1, Reverb 1 + Reverb 2 in front of the two amps, and then post effects after the amps using the Fractal Audio VP4 usually adding another reverb and another delay plus stereo imaging. Yes, I love Marc Byrd's guitar sounds.
Super nice hearing that comparison back to back! I love using both at the same time so you get some of the richness and breakup pre-amp and the sleekness and width post-amp
Let me be clear…they both have their place. For ME, I’ve been playing with with wet effects after the amps but the sound I am after (and have been unable to) is with the wet effects BEFORE the amp. That “smushed” all integrated sound that has eluded me for so long is the tone that I want! I just got two Tonex one and I am about to rewire my board with the wet effects before them amps! Thank you for the video!!
Never really heard the different too much until those comparisons. After is much cleaner, but Before gives it that gritty mushy tone. Both are very nice.
Dope video dude! I personally prefer amps and then wet effects since I typically want my amp to shine and then have all of my dry and wet effects to compliment the amp and I feel this allows me the best chance to do so!
Thanks for the video. I used my HX Stomp and played around with where to put my wet FX during a recent pedalboard build and I found that my personal favorite was a third option...between the amp and the cab (similar to having it in the FX loop of an amp...I think). I have all wet in the FX loop of the HX Stomp and have the amp model before the FX loop and the cab after or in my OX Stomp after leaving the HXs. In your sound samples I definitely liked the FX before the amp. Thanks again!
I was thinking about this very question the day this video came out. I pulled up RUclips and this was the first video that popped up without even searching. I’m probably going with wet fx before my tonex one and figure out the gain staging for the cleanest sound. Thanks for your videos.
To clarify, I was thinking about this because I had just got my first amp modeling pedal and Bigsky. Loving the directing I’m heading with my guitar tone. And your videos are a big help this process.
In my case, I am using Headrush Gigboard. I like it when my wet effects are in front of my amps It has more clarity and much more dynamic. Great video brother. Love it
AMPS>Wet FX to me is much more suitable for Worship to fit in the overall mix, Though using the H90 routing Dual mode gives you the option to hit the amp/Tonex in the front or after which I do switch to WET FX/Amp when I'm able to get away with it in the mix. Another great video explaining and hearing the many options to choose from. Thanks so much for all the time and hard work you put into these Vids. May GOD bless you to keep your busy schedule time to provide us subscribers with many more great Videos. Note: When are you going to come up with some H90 presets.I'll be your first buyer. Thanks
would love to see a video on how you set up your RJM. the way you have it configured right now is something i’d like to do for mine, and i’m sure a lot of others would enjoy as well. you’ve set it up to its full potential!
Great video! Love the insight! Personally, I actually like to put my delays before my amps and reverbs after. I feel like in that configuration, the delays maintain a bit more clarity, and reverbs can really open up and feel more full. I run stereo tonex pedals as well and love your captures!
Great video Devan! This was exactly what I was looking for! I have been using wet effects after amps for quite a while and I guess I am very used to! And this mainly because I can freely blend whatever amps I am using in my ToneX with out loosing the fully stereo capabilities… now, I am really considering in rewiring my pedalboard and throwing wet effects before amps! Thanks man! I really enjoyed the video!
Awesome my friend! Yeah, I forgot to mention one of the biggest reasons someone may choose to run wet effects after is if they're using just one mono amp and still want stereo effects.
Just rewired my board with wet fx before the amp after watching your pedalboard video. Was just wondering when a video on "before or after" would come out :)
Amazing video again! I’ve always been pro effects straight into the front of the amps. It’s just my favorite way to sound HUGE. I get that guys with studio ears would likely want effects after amps though as it’s probably easier to manage in a DAW and studio mixing environment.
Great video, man! I was a wet FX intro amp solution guy for a long time but I git the Dream 65 and could not get my big verbs to not clip. It just did not sound right. so I moved the dream to go before wet FX and now I think I prefer that sound. Just got a ToneX one and plan to try it both ways.
Yeah I totally get that! Every amp modeler is different and I, too, found the Ruby/Dream combo to not take wet Fx as well as the ToneX does so definitely play with the order again once you get those!
One of the reasons I stopped using a full blown pedalboard is because I prefer running modulation, overdrive etc pre amp and delay and reverb post amp. Normally delay and reverb are on separate parallel paths with the dry signal for clarity. One way I can do this with Tonex or other pedal amp is by using a midi controller and a pedal drawer in a 19 inch rack with a line mixer. Alternatively Full sized Helix or Axe Fx gets the job done whether you use the internal amps or Tonex, as the modeller can act as a mixer. The downside of this approach is the lack of on the fly control though . 4 cable method with a pedal switcher that can mix in parallel sort of gets there but not as good and there is more to go wrong due to extra cables. As you say there is no right or wrong answer it’s just what works for you and the music you are playing.
I think wet FX after the amps are great for when you're creating a bed or kind of a space. So my main verbs and delays are before my amps, and then I love to have my super wet swelly/ambient FX after. Makes for some really unique tonal capabilities!
I put an fx loop with wet fx in between the cab and amp on the quad cortex because thats how Mark Johnston does it on the quad and i think it sounds amazing
I always prefer wet fx in front of my amps, if you don't have the option to put them in between the amp and cab. That's how I have it set up on my main analog board with ToneX's so I'd bet you'd get really similar results with the QC. But feel free to play with it. They could sound good after as well.
Alright so here’s my problem, for over a year now i’ve been struggling with tone, specifically it’s either too soft and bright, or too quiet with not enough effects. I have tried just about everything…. I have 3 drives, blackhole reverb, boss delay, compression, and a Vox ac-30. I don’t know what i’m doing wrong
I might be missing the mark but isn't your board set up for wet effects into amps primarily so it is going to sound a lot different when switching the order not set up for wet effecrs after amps. I run wet effects after amps and i have completely changed the way i have set up those effects like increased mix, repeats just different settings even different settings on amps and ODs compared to if i was running wet effects before amps. Your wet effects sounded glorious before your amps but that is the way you have it set up. It could sound very different if you set up your effects to run after amps primarily. 😊
You're not wrong. And I mentioned that somewhere in the video. If I were to set up my board with post-amp fx in mind, I would have set them up different. I would also have set up my drives and amps differently.
I’ve tried both. When setting them after the amps, I make sure I turn up the mix for the FX a little. The outcome is glorious. I feel a cleaner and more defined sound. Especially in the mix with other instruments
People forget a KEY factor here is whether or not you use amp distortion. Some people use amps as a clean platform and putting wet fx before amp but after overdrives works. However, a lot of players use tube amp distortion and not OD pedals. So when using a gain channel on amp it will usually sound way better with wet fx in loop i.e after your amp distortion :)
I’ve recently been running my amps way hotter, and actually prefer the wets into them even more. I love the breakup on the wets, so that’s a big factor too. I used to not like that sound, but it’s because I was running them into modelers that didn’t take it well. On real amps, and when I switched to ToneX’s, it was so much more musical, even with running the amps hotter.
Agreed, I missed this point in my video. When using high gain amps I imagine it's usually preferred to use wet effects after. I don't use much amp gain at all so it slipped my mind.
@@thetoneshepherd Yeah all good man! Just thought it was worth mentioning from someone who relied on amp distortion for 20 years and who has recently experimented with the whole clean platform idea :) Deffo something people should take in to account if using high gain stuff!
I got in the habit of using the effects loop for wet effects, because I played through channel switching amps. I actually used both channels, getting the preamp tube saturation for my drive sound (plus a drive pedal for another level on either channel). I am experimenting with various setups these days. Good discussion here.
It all depends on the style of music really. For worship wet fx before an edge of breakup amp is just THE sound. Now a part in a song or a certain song may dictate I run them post amp, I.e. Lincoln Brewster type stuff. Awesome room, looks great
I like my reverbs and delays after the amp. What really helps adjustment to either choice is having a blend knob or separate wet and dry level knobs on your pedals/units. But that's typically only a premium pedal option.
Yeah there are some rad ways to do parallel routing too. I've been wanting to try the Jet Pedals Red Sea to play with doing a parallel blend of delay and reverb.
Great video. The issue hear is that you are not running edge of breakup. You are running at breakup. In my opinion you would get a better tone if you dialed your amps back and ran you r wet effects before and used a drive pedal to get your breakup
I used the wet fx always after tube amp distortion. But since i have the UAFX Lion "on the edge of breakup tone“ in the Loop in the HX Stomp. I noticed that my delay sound very ugly to me. I have searched for a while if the cables are right, or the Trim input or something else. But than i put delay before the Lion and now the sound is how it should be.
@Kunnel87 if your delay is from the stomp, check the control labeled Headroom on the delay block. Might be that when the delay was after the amp the amp boosted the signal so much the delay itself started distorting. Up it to max (+12dB) and the sound should be much cleaner. Then of course check whether or not you like it before or after. 👍🏻
Hi! your video was so helpful.. but can i ask something? Can i use tonex as AMP simulator and ox stomp pedal as CAB simulator? I can't afford two tonex pedals coz theres no space in my pedal board...

@@thetoneshepherd thanks bud, makes a bit more sense after that, i must say out of all the modelers ive tried or owned the tonex is just phenomenal price wise even if you factor in a extra di box that doubles as a safety for the pedal board
Why not try both at the same time? I think I'm going to give that a shot today using two of the same effect with identical settings and one placed before and one placed after the amp and see what it sounds like hell it could be good.😮
Ok kind of learning about all this stuff still but I had a thought. I want to retain the clarity in the delay but I like the “dirt” or whatever from the verb going into the amp. Would it sound ok if I ran the reverb into the amp and ran the delay after the amp? I’m using a hx stomp for wet fx and amps
You can try anything! But I think most would do the opposite--delay into the amp so you'll still get a little of that storm going on, and then reverb after. But heck, try it!
Here are my stages: 1st (Daily Driver) | 2nd (Benson Preamp) | 3rd (Aspen) | 4th (Focus Fuzz). Then I use two boosts (Prickly Pear and Benson Ger. Boost) after all my drives to push the amps harder if needed.
@@thetoneshepherd after and not before .. ! An always on ! You surprised me all the time, I ordered the prickly pearl I might try also after ! I thought it’s only for boosting volume best?
There are a lot of different ways to use a preamp. You can use the PP first and it’s great for that too. But the Chase Tone Secret Preamp in particular is really meant to go as far back in the signal chain as possible.
I go wet effects after amps, only since I switched to modelers. I’m all in on the line 6 eco system and I’ve got everything dialed in post amps and am happy with it. I do like the sound of wet fx in front of the amps but at this point I’ve put so much time in to dialing them in post amps I don’t want that to be in vain 😂
@@thetoneshepherd I’m considering building a second board soonish with a tonex one for amps. If so will probably go wet fx in front - as well as purchasing some tone shepherd captures!! 👍🏼
@thetoneshephard I put my Tonex in the Stereo FX Loop and create a patches with the FX loop before and after the wet effects. Makes it easy to use both options. Depending on the set list I decide which to use. Also, thanks for taking the time to always answer everyone. Not many RUclipsrs do that.
If I put amp before dly+reverb will I still get that broken up sound from my reverbs? Cause as of now I only have one Tonex One and I do want stereo reverbs and delays, so will I still be able to get that sort of sound? Edit: Lets say I turn up the mix on my reverbs, can it get that stormy sort of sound?
It won't ever really be that "stormy" sound because there's nothing to distort the reverb and delay. That's what causes that sound. But it can still sound good! So don't be discouraged if you have to run your wet effects after your amp.
It certainly depends on the style of music you're after, but for mine, I'd argue the "typical" approach is wet fx before amps. Again, play around and see what you like!
Two Big Sky's is the most praise and worship thing I've ever seen

You can try anything! But I think most would do the opposite--delay into the amp so you'll still get a little of that storm going on, and then reverb after. But heck, try it!
I think Wet after amps sounds more refined and less of a noise wall.
It's definitely more refined. Won't argue with that!
Do you not use pog2 anymore? Or using H90’s octave algorithm?
I do still have the POG2, it’s under my riser. That being said, I do use the octave on the H90 and bit and don’t mind it
Look like benson went first stage? Which preamp first not prickly pearl ?
Here are my stages: 1st (Daily Driver) | 2nd (Benson Preamp) | 3rd (Aspen) | 4th (Focus Fuzz). Then I use two boosts (Prickly Pear and Benson Ger. Boost) after all my drives to push the amps harder if needed.
@@thetoneshepherd you don’t have a preamp before all you drives any more ?
I used to have the secret preamp after all my drives but I’ve since removed that pedal for space reasons. But I plan on putting it back soon.
I TOTALLY get this! I found the Helix to be better with wet after as well. Same with the QC and in some cases with the FM9 as well.
@@thetoneshepherd I’m considering building a second board soonish with a tonex one for amps. If so will probably go wet fx in front - as well as purchasing some tone shepherd captures!! 👍🏼
Ooooo sweeet!! Let me know how that goes!
If I did the amps then wet effects using my hx stomp would I come out of the outputs or fx loops
Either would work honestly. But I’ve heard scattered reports the FX loop isn’t the greatest on the Stomp. But I don’t have personal experience.
Where’s your hat? Great video. Thanks for sharing!
I had to preach on Sunday so had to cut my hair HAHA
but isnt wet fx into amps not dialed in since you typically use amps into wet fx?
It certainly depends on the style of music you're after, but for mine, I'd argue the "typical" approach is wet fx before amps. Again, play around and see what you like!
Analog BBD-type delays into an amp set to breakup is what I prefer.
Sounds delicious!
Over all it was a bigger sound with the wet fx in front of the amp. I always prefer the amp to be that last thing before the board.
Agreed!
This board is so overkill… and I love it
I get it 😂
Definitely amp wetFX
They both have their purpose for sure
I feel that wetFX amp makes it louder
Perhaps. The order definitely affects volume.
I'll help yall out...wet after amp. next question.
I mean….
Wet FX into amps sounds perfect for shoegaze
For sure
Kinda amusing how He name-drops his gear like i oughta know what the heck it is...sorry, but i am old skool ( i.e. too old too change
