Hele Wāwae (The Walking Song)

- Ledward is a man of many talents as well as many interests. He is very fond of neighborhood walks, whether at home in Kane`ohe or when he visits other spots. When he began putting together this piece of music he noticed that he was finding a rhythm similar to his strolling pace, relaxed and comfortable but vigorous enough to be interesting. The title of the tune was obvious, "Hele Wāwae," Hawaiian for "walking."
It's been fun seeing the evolution of the piece as Led finds musical ideas that propel the song along, and of course it's a never ending process. Even while we shot videos each version would feature some new detail while never losing the structure and motion that made it the Walking Song.
This video was our second 2021 session in Led's backyard, once again dealing with the brisk winds with a combination of mic techniques and a bit of EQ applied in REAPER audio software. The mics are a pair of Shure KSM141s, these small diaphragm mics are unusual because they provide mechanical switching between cardioid direction and omni directional patterns. The omni pattern really helps reduce the level of wind noise. The Zoom F6 recorder was a big help as well, because the 32 bit float recording format meant we wouldn't experience clipping from any severe wind gusts.
We're both using Martin mahogany and spruce 000 style guitars. Led's is a 000-16, one of the short run 000-16s featuring a long scale and dovetail neck joint. Mine is an OM-18V, another model that was only produced for a few years and also features a long scale. Both guitars are tuned to taropatch open G (D G D G B D from low pitch to high).
Cameras for this clip were a Panasonic Lumix GH5, iPhone XS Max and and iPhone 11 Pro Max. Filmic Pro and Filmic Remote were a big help in getting the most out of the iPhone videos. The clip was assembled in Edius 9.
If there was ever any Guitar Music better than this it has never been found and made public, This music is my afternoon nap music and it just doesn't get any better by 2 of the best Slack Key Guitar Players ever Led Kaapana and Fran Guidry.
You know you're on the right track when you take a slack key nap. We always tell people that when you fall asleep to slack key it's a compliment to the performer.
Thanks a lot for visiting and commenting.

Hey Fran, I have been watching for at least 2 years and it's almost like I know you and Led personally. The music takes me to a part of my mind that I need to visit more but really the only way I get there is through you two.
Thanks, what a kind comment. I think Hawaiian music, especially slack key, is about as positive as music can be.
Fran
@@franguidry I think so too.
Ya...that one is saved to come back to many times...REALLY good!!
Priceless music of the islands…as always! MALHALO!!!!!!!! 🏄🤟😎
You're certainly welcome, Ken. We're so lucky to have Led to bring us these wonderful sounds.
Fran
Love the song. Really pure music. Mahogany was a great choice. Great handling of the wind--just enough to let you feel the breeze as you walk, and the song rises above.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the clip. I agree that Led really captures the nice feeling of a stroll in the breeze.
Fran
I've been enjoying Fran and Led for years. Been so important to me. Thank you.
Thank you for your very generous comment and for all your visits and comments over the years.
Fran
outstanding as always!
Thanks, Gordon. Big fun for me as you can imagine.
Fran
Most excellent !!! It's always a pleasure to see 2 good friends connect and play music. part of what keeps my sanity. Although there are some who would question my sanity. Mahalo for the post. Hoping to see a live session again someday.
I hope you can get back to the windward side, things are starting to pick up a bit for the music. Sea Life Park is featuring some great artists for free on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. www.sealifeparkhawaii.com/manana

The wind in the palms is wonderful. Makes me feel like I am there. Music is great as always when these two are together.

Hi Fran,
Thanks so much for posting!
Are you back on the island? Hope to see more music from you and Led!! Just love the background with that greenery and breeze, dreaming of the islands of Hawai'i.
Mahalo 👍🙏
Yes, I'm happy to say that we are back on O`ahu, although we've been so busy that the days have flown by and it's almost time to return to California. Still, we're fortunate to be able to visit for any length of time.
Thanks for stopping by,
Fran
Hi Fran - I was delighted to see this post and I was most definitely not disappointed when I listened . Such a beautiful melody and superb guitar playing. I thoroughly enjoy your music. I look forward to all your posts. Thanks 👍👍
Thank you, Brian. I feel so lucky to be able to play music with Ledward and also to find so many folks who appreciate what we come up with.

@@franguidry The talent shines through. This performance brings that tropical feel to a wet and windy Ireland 👍👍
Brian, I wish we could share some of the sweet tradewinds, I'm going to miss them when we get back to California.
Fran
@@franguidry I wish you could too Fran. Enjoy your stay and safe trip home to California when you leave
While listening to this, I close my eyes, the sounds and sights of waves softly hitting the shore and palm trees swaying in the breeze soothe my soul. What magic you and Led bring to every selection you play together. I never tire of listening to you, whether Led is playing a ukulele or a slack key guitar. Fran, thank you so much for making the world a more beautiful place through your music. I am grateful!!!
Thanks for visiting and commenting, it's very gratifying to hear from people who enjoy the music and the videos. I'm sure you understand how fortunate I am to be able to play alongside Ledward and to capture some of his artistry in these videos. It's all beyond anything I could have imagined when I started playing.
Fran
Couldn't agree more with Dolores' sentiments about Led and Fran's slack key guitar playing. It nurtures the soul.
Thank you so much for posting ♪ You and Mr.kaapana’s “NAHENAHE” slack key sounds and melody always make me relax ♪ I always hope to listen to your playing♪
Mahalo for visiting and commenting, we love to share relaxing sounds.
Fran
Fantastic. So peaceful.
Thank you, we are so pleased to know that you find our efforts satisfying.
Fran
Really nice! Was this written by Led? Thanx so much for posting these videos Fran.
Aloha, Joan, yes this is a Led composition. He's been developing it over the last couple of years and of course he still tweaks it a bit each time he plays it.
Fran
Excellent!! Really like the camera work too. Very clever stuff and very melodic.
Thanks, Phil. I'm loving the head pic on your channel, rivers and trees indeed!
Fran
Nice!!!
Thank you, it's a pleasure to create these videos because so many people appreciate them. It's just an honor for me to be able to play alongside Ledward and to be allowed to capture these clips.

Mahalo , Led and Fran. Always makes my day to hear you.
Thanks Sandra, that song has become a regular part of our jams and shows. Great fun to play and hear what Led comes up with.
Fran
Solid performance gentlemen!
Thanks for visiting both here and at the Homebrewed Music channel.
Fran
Very leisurely, I want to take a walk with the sea breeze.
Yes indeed, with the beautiful scenery around Kane`ohe Hawai`i there is no need to rush.
Fran
Mahalo Led & Fran - nahenahe ke'ia mele a me na holo wawae! Will be listening to you guys as I take my walk...Aloha no, Led, from our "hanabata" days at Kalapana...Whee Ha!
Whee ha indeed! Thanks for visiting and commenting, I'll tell Led you were here.
Fran
Marvelous, thank you. Kudos to the voodoo audio skills that killed the wind sounds. Wonderful pace that could just go forever.
Thanks for visiting. I had read that omnidirectional mics reduce wind noise substantially and this was my first test - they passed! I'm using omni mics more and more these days.
Fran
I hope I live to take a walk like that.
Thanks for visiting, I think having Ledward for a soundtrack makes any walk special.
Fran
Beautiful music 🎶
Susan, welcome and thanks for taking a moment to listen and comment.
Fran
Beautiful sound!💞
So glad you enjoyed the clip. Thanks for visiting and commenting.
Fran
I've had a hip replacement. In another week I'll try that pace.
Good luck with your recovery!
Fran
I love listening to you two. Clark and Montana had a connection like yours.
Last weekend after a concert at Bargemusic (a fave, Beethoven op. 90 trio) walked Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan at a relaxed Hele Wawae pace without pain or a limp.
Thanks for your good wishes. Any plans to play New York? Best, Nat
@@natkernell1438 Led makes it to New York on occasion and when he's there he sometimes plays with local musicians. Here's a clip with Claudia doing "Hele Wawae" ruclips.net/video/XLfvSrNg3ac/видео.html She's one of the people he plays with sometimes in New York.
