Left handed shooter here. I own and tried the exact Esstac setup you have except on a Remington shotgun. Shoot that shotgun with your support side. Change shoulders and shoot left handed. Go to 6:58 in the video and look at that lower aft corner of the Esstac card. It will dig a huge channel in your left hand when you pull the trigger provided you can even grip the gun to shoot it without obstruction. It won't be fun even with gloves and you can still get a nasty groove dug into your hand. I've had extensive training where Clint Smith worked before he founded Thunder Ranch and find those shot cards to not hold the rounds nor stay where "slapped" on the Velcro during hard and/or rapid use. Shoot under a barricade having switched to your left side to get low enough and see what happens to those rounds and that card when they drag the ground under recoil. Then there is the "slapping" cards onto the receiver. Rip the empty off and slap on a new one as fast as you can under stress. It won't be straight. It might be so crooked that you might even obstruct your trigger finger assuming you are shooting right handed. Maybe it's too far forward or too far aft and causes other problems. I believe the best application for those cards is simply to carry more ammo in an orderly package that you can stick to a Velcro patch on the exterior of your kit and load from there. Esstac card in a pouch, remove from pouch, stick to kit, load from the card. The card is not on the gun. These are non-workable for a left handed shooter. Shoot support side with one of these cards on the gun and you'll quickly agree.
Just got my hands on the Benelli M4 so this vid is perfectly timed for me. Falling in love with my Benelli in ways I never thought I would cause I’ve never been into shotguns
I have been a Remington shooter for 40 years. Started with the 1100 then moved into the 870/18.5” with light n side saddle. Have been hankering for something lighter and came across James Thunder Ranch video of this 1301. I was actually looking for the M4 but when I saw this hot rod of shotguns I fell in love with it. Well as everyone knows guns are pricey and in limited supply this year 2021. As God favors His own I was talking with my neighbor shortly after beginning my search for the 1301T ODG, he said I just saw one yesterday (Saturday) at one of our local shops in ODG. “For real?”, “Yes”. Call the local gun shop on Tuesday putting the exact ODG 1301 that I was looking for on hold. Picked it up on Saturday one week after hearing it was in town. Have fired some boxes through it and just in love with it. My son has the M4 so we enjoyed running these guns side by side. The 1301 is a great purchase. Love the Blue Force sling have them on AR platforms, but I am also looking into the Warrior Poet Bungee sling as well. Will be adding the 7 cards to gun as backup ammo carriers. BTW one of my son-in law now has my 870/18.5” he loves it just as much as I do, it was hard to part with it but this weight loss was my deciding factor, just love the 6.75# as out of the box weight. Understanding it will get heavier as items attach themselves but will still be lighter in the end. Love the content James and keep the updates coming.
Excellent shotgun use content! It is so rare to see, for lack of a better way to say it, tips and tricks of the tactical shotgun. Now that you have it, what do you do with it? How do you set it up? How do you run it? How do you maximize it's strong points? How do you overcome the weaker ones? Great start! More, much more, pls?
Just got my 590 recently and came to this video for card setup. Thank you James and TFB for this outreach and filling in their gray area! Love esstac, they have great products, I have a few types of their ar15,10, and double stack pistol pouches. One thing I have to warn about from my personal experience with them is their customer service from the civilian consumer side is horribly nonexistent. I had an issue with the wrong pouch they sent me and I could not get ahold of them at all. So there are no returns if something goes wrong, just make sure you are absolutely sure of your purchase before purchasing from them.
You made a believer out of me. Both of my "tactical" shotguns (a 1972 Remington 870 purchased for $75 from Brown's Home and Auto - yeah, my first - and a 1980s Benelli M1 Super 90, both in 12ga) have side saddles because thats all that was available back then. But I'll be looking into the cards now for sure!
Completely off topic; my daughter's are getting into metal detecting and I was wondering if you had any recommendations for a good starting metal detector?
Very well articulated. Just like a professional announcer. And you did not once resort to that very stuipid non-word, "UH" ! Congratulations on a job well done, Sir. It is a pleasure to listen to you speak.
I rock Velcro shotcards on my 870P using the Vang Comp VCS and never thought to add a spare card to the stock! Great idea! Now my gun will have 18 shells ready to fawk-ing RAWK BRAH!!!!
Cool. Had a friend who worked for Rem for 30 years on the line putting together ll87 and 870. There was not much he could not do with these shotguns. Thanks for the video.
Love the shotgun videos and these are helpful to me since I've gotten more into shotguns since the ammo is not as scarce as rifle ammo. A shotgun tactics video would be very appreciated. Could you also do a video of 922(r) from an attorney's perspective?
Folks that understand the strengths and limitations of a shotgun aren’t the problem children; my hate is usually directed at the ignoramuses that pull the usual BS of “you don’t need to aim it!”, “rack the pump, that’s all you need to solve the problem!”, “birdshot is plenty for home defense!”, “shotgun shot doesn’t penetrate through walls!”, and all the other Twitter-length quips that if not blatant falsehoods are very manipulated versions of the truth. When people sell the shotgun on the premises of being this wonder weapon that will annihilate any foes in one shot that at the same time has its shot come to a halt in the first layer of drywall, and doesn’t require more than a box of birdshot at an indoor range to be considered competent in using one is when I have to sit there and wonder just how many people trying to push shotguns as self defense weapons actually know what they’re talking about.
@@Verdha603 I agree with most of your sentiments. I would suggest, if you haven't already seen it, to take a look at Paul Harrell's demonstration on birdshot for home defense. The results surprised me.
@@billbrasky527 Oh, I absolutely have. In fact, I actually use Harrell’s video as evidence aimed at the folks preaching how birdshot is all you need to prove that it’s not better because it doesn’t overpenetrate. Can birdshot kill? Certainly, but at least from what I’ve seen from reported self defense shootings, it’s simply not as consistent as buckshot, with precise shot placement mattering a lot more with birdshot than buckshot.

Great video. I was just about to "shell out" (.. see what I did there?) for an aluminum side carrier. Glad I watched this first. Just ordered velcro for like 1/5 the cost. All those points make perfect sense too.

Damn dude! I was almost over the last video about this shotgun. I spent days convincing myself not to buy one and now you wave the red cape in front of me again. I hate you.
You know what would make the shotshell cards even better? If they came with mountable magnets for the receiver and magnets below the Velcro on the card. That way you could use Velcro for attaching them to you and other things and the magnets to hold the card to the gun. As to make it less prone to falling off in water or after prolonged use of the Velcro

Too many folks think “it’s a shotgun, it’s idiot proof” without actually understanding that training is required.
@@jameswessling6982 what I think is best bang for the buck right now is the Nokta Simplex WITH wireless headphones.
Those are the best cards, I'm going to get more from Vang Comp. All my other cards are worn out, from SOE Tactical.

Cool. Had a friend who worked for Rem for 30 years on the line putting together ll87 and 870. There was not much he could not do with these shotguns. Thanks for the video.
Shaking it like a crying baby, LMFAO. I learn so much & get a comedy act also.
I love it when he says I’m shaking these cards like a screaming baby.
James and OG “Officer Greg” need to make a shotgunning in tactical short shorts video together!!!! Millions of views!!!!!
I’m down. But James is way too cool for my tiny channel. 🤷♂️
Love the shotgun videos and these are helpful to me since I've gotten more into shotguns since the ammo is not as scarce as rifle ammo. A shotgun tactics video would be very appreciated.
Could you also do a video of 922(r) from an attorney's perspective?
Been using the Estac Shotgun Cards for years. Great review.
Thanks!
Too all the shotgun for defense haters out there, Suck It! Shotguns are awesome for home defense as long as one know their limitations.
A defensive perimeter of 50-70 yards should be enough for most residences unless SHTF
@@Verdha603 I agree. It is an awesomely powerful weapon when properly employed.
I use a stock pull over shell holder... but I wear it on my right wrist( brass down) I can with left hand feed the tube ultra fast
my remmington 870 is setup with the following modifications:
cartridges.
James thanks so much much for the tip about using the shell cards over the EXPENSIVE SIDE SADDLE option....You Are Brilliant Dude!. And hell yea that 2+mag extension is the bomb!
As much as I love a semi auto giving me semi chubs, I'll stick with the ol reliable mossy 590. Have had one for years. Used one in the army. Always reliable.
This is the kind of load-out discussion that makes a man push the subscribe button. Thank you very much.
6+1 18.5" Mossberg 590 Retrograde with Heat Shield is what I've wanted since they were announced pretty much i'm just a cheapskate
I cant even find one anymore
@@burningvalhalla3359 look up exile armory on youtube they post vids everyday about what's in stock I think it was 430 dont quote me though
If you have a Cabelas/Basspro near you they have them free ship to store for $529.
I've got my original Mossberg 590 8+1 w/heat shield that was the first gun I ever bought. It's still my baby. I actually just put new furniture on it.
My first gun was an 870 youth 20ga. My dad gave it to me for Christmas almost 30 years ago and I still have it. I just bought a 1301 partly due to your videos about it.
Love my 5 round side saddle from GG&’G. Excellent shell retention, and it also incorporates a QD sling mount(single point!). Sitting on a Shockwave with a streamlight forend, vortex venom , and original SB tactical brace. Digging the shotgun videos.
If you got 4inches left over....you can mount a beer can cozy !!!
Every day I realize how much of my tactical taste is from this channel.
Minimal chest rigs are the sexiest shit
When I hear "military grade," my brain translates it to "cheap, overbuilt, and durable, because E-1s *will* find ways to destroy it."

Thanks for getting the word out about those velcro cards. Looks like a great setup. I will adopt this.
Hey James, I really loved this episode. And per Clint I am getting a few dozen of those cards. But brah, my DP-12 carries 26 shells in the tubes. Although that 1301 is pretty and fast. I've got 26 shells, and it spits them quickly. Especially when I don't have to reload it 3x. Thanks again. And this is definitely what I pay for with my Patron/SubsribeStar accounts.
the weight for 26 rounds would be a lot.. no?
And your DP 12 is 3 lbs heavier. James' chest rig and full cards probably don't add up to 3lbs but even if they did it is well distributed. Faster isn't always better.
Brilliant video. Learned lots as an older newbie, and, also, decided on a 1301 as my next shotgun.....
Can never have too much shotty content.
Love how I saw this video and when Clint said order 100…….I told myself I need more of them they are now $15 a piece gotta love it!!!!
You know you’re the same age as James when “pimp” was also your favorite noun, adjective, and verb in high school
Yes please more shotgun videos! It's kinda my thing too. Ah look at Johnny boy over there rockin the benelli. I'm going with pump shotgun and sidearm as a good general load out for most conditions.
There is not enough good shotgun content on the YT.
First was a Wally World Winchester 1300 defender. And have been partial to them ever since.
Have a 120 Ranger in a Defender configuration at present. Still serving me well.
"I assume mil-spec means it's better," killing me James😂.
Definitely harassed you on Reddit to make this video like 6 months ago but here it sits and apparently I can’t search for shit. Thanks as always for the stellar content.
Does Clint cover in his classes the situation where you end up firing 25+ shotgun shells? Seems like any situation where you would carry 50 rounds of 12 gauge you really need to be packing a rifle.
100% agree. If you're into something where you might fire off 50 rounds, the shotgun is not the weapon for the job. And I'm a shotgun guy.
Love my shotgun. I bought it just to have one and it has become my favorite firearm. So versatile. I had a shell pop out of my old shotgun card on the side. I think it may be time to buy some new ones.
I figured you'd know by know James that "milspec" just means lowest bidder
The full statement is “lowest bidder that meets specs” slightly different meaning.
Except it doesn’t. That’s just what people joke about when they want to sound like they know something.
@@RF-wn7et exactly. Joke about. It’s a joke. I don’t “want to sound like I know something”. I’m just making a joke. That is all.
Thanks for the video. I just got my first defensive-oriented shotgun and it'll be fully set up soon.
🥇Tactical Chubby “Tier 1 operators silently nodding in approval of my purchase” 🥇
I set up an cheap maverick 88 7+ as a combat system.
But I run the mini shells with the adapter I fit 13 slugs or buck shot! And a sling that dubs as 30 shell holder.
I have a light and a red dot too!
James, That chest rig with the shotshells looks like you about to go into an aloha snackbar mode
fkn lol with that snackbar comment. Caught me off guard, but yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
I know this is older, but this really helped me with the whole side saddle decision. Thank you. Mark
Just watched your video with an icy cold triple IPA. Both good stuff 👍. Really impressed with the card system. Seems like THE solution to a hungry shotgun.
As it happens, my first gun was also a Remington 870 Wingmaster in 20ga. My Dad took me to Gemco in 1980 when I was 14 to get it. I paid cash for it at the counter from my wallet in California 🤯!! How things have changed.
Thanks for what you do.
This came out at the perfect time. Just got me an 870 Express Magnum in 20 and now I know exactly what accessories to buy
I love how James gets all giddy and nervous around a pretty girl who knows how to handle a gun better than him
I love how gun guys think any girl in a gun video is pretty.
@@e7tegt503 OMG truth...and this one? Internet just littered with desperate men.
One of my exes would giggle whenever she hit a bullseye. It always gave me the warm fuzzies.
Great video. I was just about to "shell out" (.. see what I did there?) for an aluminum side carrier. Glad I watched this first. Just ordered velcro for like 1/5 the cost. All those points make perfect sense too.
Love the "passed around like a wuhan viral infection" hahahaha
Awesome video so much detail! As the Israel situation has kicked off many supplies for Benelli M4 and shotgun ammunition have sold out. Will have to be diligent about acquiring supplies when times are good.

hahaha, it was definitely a clever dig at BS gun regulation laws/agencies
Officer Greg from Taofledermaus talked about these a few years ago. They were sold out forever and I'm glad to see them coming back.
Got my first 12g on my 12th Christmas.
I got it because my dad knew I was ready. And I was. To this day, I LOVE a a classic single shot break action 12g
This could just become an all shotgun channel, and I'd be here for it.
My first shotgun was an used classic Ithaca model 37. Smooth as butter.
Just picked mine up today! Was planning on buying a 590A1 and was shocked to see a 1301 in stock!
