Did you upgraded your OS to latest version before performing test ?
The M2 chips generating more heat on the performance cores specifically because they have more cache space to crunch data, and the tolerance has been pushed to the 105 Celcius area. The wattage of course comes into play, but Apple needs to adjust its fan curve to these M2 chips with an update for sure. At first I thought it was just the wattage but its really the performance cores getting hotter cause of the ability to crunch more data
After reviewing certain tasks I do, I can't advise a M2, the SSD bottleneck is too large on the stock or upgraded model. I'd rather wait for m3 or Dragon ryzen cpu's
What was the storage size and specs for the M2 you were testing?
@@ZachAttack2U M2 8gb 256
I already have a monitor and I am creating educational videos with an intel i7 with 16GB RAM. So an M1 Mac mini with 16 GB would be good...unless an M2 Mini with 24 GB comes along.
Thanks! Thanks for taking the time and putting these incredible comparative videos together! They are so informative, easy to understand, and helping the decision making process. As a result of these videos, I purchased an M1 8TB pro max, and I couldn’t be happier.
This is an excellent comparison. For Lightroom, I suggest that you take a set of photos and combine them in a panorama. For the ultimate test you can Auto Bracketing for each shot. For instance a panorama consisting of 10 photos with Auto Bracketing will merge a total of 30 photos. I would be interested if this was included into your tests as it can be challenging to handle so many RAW photos. A RAW photo from my Nikon Z6 vary from around 30 to 33MB. A camera such as the Z7 will take photos closer to 60 MB each so this could be a good meaningful test for you to perform.
This would be very usefull to know!
This would be an actual LR stress test. Stitching very large panoramas and doing HDR merging are the two most time consuming tasks... not exporting JPEGs.
Thanks for including the music production test … this is the only channel that included this test in their video… thank you so much again ❤️
Yeah and it was actually very usefull!! I mean… I ordered my 14” two days ago, but now I’m happier than before 😂❤️
Yes I ham currently happy with my 13 inch pro
I think that when the M2 macbook will be updated to its latest version of macos the results may be better .
@@AmoLaMusicaIAC congrats sir

I know this is out of the blue but I have a question 🙋♂️ what kind of processing power is it required to mix motion graphics on Final Cut Pro X? Is that single core performance or multiple and graphics ?! Cuz even with M1 Max Mac Studio I can’t play the mix of graphics on fcpx if I don’t render them first
Appreciate MaxTech for feedback
you need as much ram as possible
That’s crazy that the M2 MacBook Air has MagSafe but not the M2 MacBook Pro.
cuz it will be abandoned very soon
That's because its literally the same Macbook pro 13" with m1. Guess they've made a lot or many consumers returned and opted for the Air instead. That's leaves bunch of stocks. Have you even wonder why they put the M1s on iPads now? Exactly.
@@michaelhall9146 I also could care less about MagSafe. I dont have kids running around tripping stuff. I only charge once and disconnect anyways.
@@andyabajo Cuz it's much cheaper to make millions of same m1 chip, then make new chip for every type of product. If it can be possible, they prefere to make same chip even for iPhone

Max, Thanks a MILLION for including the Logic Benchmark! You guys rock.
This seems like the most worthless upgrade if you own the "old" m1 macbook. Especially with the poor ssd.
apple upgrades are almost always worthless, buy once and use it for 5 years thats the way otherwise apple products have nothing going in their way compared to windows
I buy a new Mac every 10 years, they just continue to work well and there’s no point. I like this about them.
@@TheMambaFAN23 Who said you’re supposed to upgrade every year? Of course there are improvements every year, that doesn’t mean you have to upgrade. I’m sure people don’t upgrade their vehicle every year just because the cruise control settings have been tweaked.
@@TheMambaFAN23 Why would you upgrade a computer every year? Thats pretty stupid. These new chips can actually me get real life and usage out of it. Unlike my PC where I feel the new to upgrade components all the time. However, this computer in 2022 is a big disappointment. It seems like they are recycling parts to get rid of them and either remove it from the lineup or get ready for redesign. This is definitely not the computer to get in 2022.
Well there's no really need to upgrade from a laptop that's only 2 years old. Just seems like u wanna create more e-waste upgrading laptops every 2 years. The m1 macbook pro will be good for another 2 to 3 years.
The M2 MacBook Pro doesn’t need a second fan, they just need to use the one it has instead of keeping it off until the M2 thermal throttles.
Yea but then it would be silent and cool, like the $2000 M1 Pro.
At this point it should have a second fan to provide more value. Like silent but full M2 experience unlike the MBA. Else just get the M1 or M1 pro/max using the 14/16 inch models. Its dumb to buy it with less performance or same performance as the M1 but with a higher price premium because "its new."
@@MaksimYuryev are you saying it's better this way qo it stays silent longer?
@@surena9451 so, a fan that is silent? By nature, a fan makes noise the faster it spins..
@@Tech-geeky I forgot that I even made that comment so had to think back what I meant. I probably was refering to the "silence" in a sense like very low noise of two fans running at idle, which would probably be enough cooling to sustain the higher performance.
Having a single fan and letting it kick in with a more aggressive curve (or anything earlier than thermal throttling) could have the consequence of more noise while two fans could have the same or better performance at lower or same noise levels, respectively.
Not to mention, if you have two fans then you also need two sides with a heatsink instead of one. This would directly corelate to more surface area aiding the fans in low RPM low noise scenario. It's easier to remove heat with big surface area than a tiny one, hence why passive coolers are so massive but silent while stock coolers also do the trick with much smaller footprint at the cost of much more noise.
Really enjoy your videos 🤩 thx you for inculding coding and music production
Love your comparisons, dude. Keep it up!
Design wise, I love the M2 but practicality wise I'll definitely go for M1.
I was going to order a base model m2 air as soon as pre-orders opened up, but now I'm going to wait for Maxtech review as they are the only ones doing such a thorough test, i'm worried about the m2 air's SSD speed and also its thermal ability given the thinner chassis and no fan. Really surprised with the fcp benchmarks too. Thanks Maxtech, keep up the good work.
Has anybody confirmed if the 512GB models have 2 SSD chips? If so just upgrade to that if you can.
On the M1 MBA you get a binned chip (1 less GPU core) if you got the base model. On the M2 Air it might be the same (making a 512GB SSD upgrade even more worth it)
if you wait the review I think it already sold out 😂
@@DanielHarrisCodes i believe iirc zoneoftech got a 512gb model and it was getting the expected speeds which implies it has 2 ssd chips.
M2 binned has 8 core gpu, non binned has 10 core gpu. But the problem with the 10 core gpu version with 512gb is, if you also upgrade to 16gb ram, the price is then very close to the 14" macbook pro, which is a vastly better machine.
hey man, you are doing a great job! simple, honest and straight forward.
Thanks for giving us all the info we need!!
Can't wait to see the comparison between the M1 Air and M2 Air's performance differences.BTW i always love your videos.keep up the great content💝
My theory was since they were not planning upgrading the design of the 13" but were introducing the new MBA with M2, they had no choice to put the M2 in it, because, otherwise, they'd have to discontinue it, which they probably don't want to do until the 12" or 15" Air is ready.
They probably want to sell out the remaining parts before they discontinue this 13" design.
@@Goaltimer that's my guess also. If they do the same for the m2 MacBook Air them they are idiots. Will be very bad for their reputation
@@Goaltimer does this mean the air will get redesigned?? Oh yeah especially if the price stays the same it'll be gud soup
@@Goaltimer Their not gonna discontinue it... They need a "portable" version, and the bigger you go, the less portable it will be. Look at iPad Pro... 12.9-inch is not as portable as 9-inch back in the day and them 7-inch. There's always a trade-off.
Great review! I am very happy with my M1 and am happy I got it earlier. Thanks guys!
Thanks for this thorough and honest review Max Tech!!!
Can’t wait to watch M1 vs M2 MacBook Air🤤
Fascinating. Thanks for this thorough comparison. SSD performance so sad.
Thankyou for this video
Compare the two MB Air,please! Always great videos thank you!
Apple at event: "Unlike our competitors, who increase power to get performance, we focus on efficiency."
Also Apple: Increases power by 33% to get 13% more performance and also puts in worse SSDs to boot.
Even my old Intel Mac never hits 104C
😂😂😂
But the power draw is still less than half for a comparable intel system 🤔
😂😂😂😂😂 what apple 😎😎
@@BolusTube I have a 2015 27" iMac and the CPU and GPU hit 106c regularly. It's 7 years old and I used it daily for 8 hours. No issue.
I wonder if Apple went from 2 to 1 SSD chip bc of supply chain shortages. Otherwise inexcusable to make the SSD slower for a newer device…
I think so. The Apple watch 8 and iPhone 14 are going to be a disappointment. Due to chip and hardware shortages!
Cheaping out a bit to compensate the rise in prices we now see everywhere. (?)
Particularly for initial reviews of a new product...
I wonder if the 512GB version of SSD is twice as fast.
Apple most probably just using lower quality cheaper SSD to save money and that's disgusting when you know how huge margins apple has per every MBp sold.
Also, WHY are they using 720p camera on an expensive device in 2022??
It's literally 1$ difference if they used 1080p cam.
720p is for 2015...
Thanks for this wonderful and comparison. We can see Your effort. Your work is worth it. Keep it up.
Great videos guys, happy i found your channel and you!
Max, in the LR export test, did you enable GPU exporting? That feature in the latest version makes it less RAM/CPU dependent and I imagine that would widen the gap between the two laptops
So you’re saying default specs on M2 maybe throttled and have to be manually set to maximize output? That’s kind of dumb.
@@witewolfmusic1654 Nah, it's a Lightroom thing: by default, it only uses CPU cores for exporting. Gotta enable GPU separately. Might happen by default now since this video came out though
@@SamEmilio2 copy that
3D rendering is doing the wrong thing. I already mentioned, you need to add Redshift test doing the Moana Island scene. You can really see the difference there if you are really trying to see the usage of RAM.
Great videos as usual. Keep it coming
Thank u Max tech I love u channel so much !
I think it would be really interesting to see a comparison between the two laptops while running on low power mode.
Thanks for the content, keep up the good work!
Love the channel brotha. With respect , please change the speaker song example 😂
WOW! I am really impressed with your service to the community. I was expecting the M2 at super fast parametrics in all categories over the M1. Fingers crossed that Apple will update its OS and other software to optimize the M2. You would think they would make a simultaneous release.
Maybe they doing this to lower expectations then with the air release they release the floodgates and make the difference astounding to the point where loads will buy the M2 Air- the M2 pro looks so bad that it has to be set up
@@user-gc6tv1bh1v Why? We already know its a bad product and the air is a whole lot better to buy due to the new design, just throw a thermal pad in the new m2 air like people did the m1 air and you’ll get more performance like the mbp it wont heat throttle that much.
Also that MBP’s design is 6 years old
@@flamingkillermc2806 Yea and you and you'll get dead battery after half a year, cuz it will be overheated all the time, what is critical for this type of battery!
@@user-gc6tv1bh1v if every 6 months, Apple was releasing a groundbreaking chip upgrade, nobody would EVER buy the higher end model…because in 6 months, their $2k purchase (at minimum) would be considered dated! M1 was the groundbreaking year, it SHOULD be smaller improvements now for the next couple years. I have a M1 Pro and am a graphics professional. I use it HEAVILY on a daily basis, and I honestly don’t know how they could make it perform better with software. M2 is all about marketing at this point.
@@BoyProFun Ok then you just buy a 6 year old design, while we enjoy your new m2 mba
I wonder how much the M2 performance tests were slowed down by the SSD having only 1 chip instead of 2 dual channel 2x speed? Tasks like exports do need to write. One question is 512GB storage enough to get 2 chips instead of 1 on the 256GB model you bought? That could be a huge performance reason to buy 512GB storage instead of cheaper 256GB?
Thanks for this review
Nice video thank you
I would love to see a gaming comparison between these two. I bet the graphics performance shows better improvements.
From a CPU only basis, it seems the M2's performance comes from higher power use rather than any really significant improvement in core design. Nothing here suggests any future M2 based mac (pro/max/ultra) will see a really significant performance boost at all, over M1. GPU is better (but not that much as better M2 performance is also core count driven).
It doesnt look like there will be any particular general reason to change up from an M1 Mac right now. Better off wating for M3 ?
Great video!
Great Video !!
I’m interested to see a comparison of the base m2 mbp vs the 512 Gb version with the faster SSD in real world tests. I wonder if you will actually noticed any difference. 1.5 GBPs is definitely not sluggish, it’s just not blazing fast.
Lots of people says the CTO SSD should be faster than base configuration.
i can't believe the SSD read/write speeds by BlackMagic on the M2 are really that terrible. performance may be not a big deal in general, but SSD in an exception "in this case'
please do a comparison with 256gb and 512gb for M2 to see what the performance difference is. I think this is an important thing to keep in mind and I think many people including myself would find it very useful.
Thank you for the great content and keep it up :)
TYSM FOR THE AWSOME VIDS
Very informative
Seems Apple lets the M2 run hotter to reduce the power usage of the fan thereby making up for the increased wattage of the chip.
What Size SSD is on each Model? For example - the larger SSDs are much faster than the smaller ones… Fascinating to see the massive difference in speed.
He said 256 gbytes on both
Looking forward to test comparisons of different configurations

Thanks for the great video.
M2 just seems like an overclocked M1 with some extra GPU cores! Hopefully with M2 Pro they will actually be able to bring it down to 3nm and get some real gains.
TSMC's 3nm will only be available in 2023

Strange SSD speeds, Greg got 2272 Write and 2743 Read with the base model, ruclips.net/video/kfFci1LDE80/видео.html, at about 7:00 mins into his video. Are they mixing SSDs across the base models I wonder?

That explains the speed difference then. Thanks for all the great work guys, keep it going.
glad I brought the M1 pro
Great video man! Watching of Brazil.
Great video. Thanks
If you look closely at the SSD chips, M1 has two and M2 has one. Maybe the chip shortage is still going on that Apple only uses 1 SSD chip on M2, leading to half a speed of the 2 SSD chips on M1.
That’s nonsense that chip could cost apple 20$ or so maybe even less
@@cricitta It's probably not about the cost, but the number of chips they can produce in time. Anyway the fact that the newer model only got half the SSD read speed is so ridiculous and unacceptable.
@@jonnykuang that will be just with 13 pro model, they want to get more hate on this model, cuz they want end production of this model, and change it on air+ 15 inch
@@BoyProFun Why would any real business and its executives want to risk damaging their brand and ability to market their brand, to BUILD hate on a product so they can end production of that model? Branding/Marketing (something Apples are very great at) is the lifeblood of any company and to enact your own damage to your brand so you can stop production of a certain product you sell is bonafide stupidity. Do you think it may be settling in problems? May be a stretch but given the additions to the chips the M2 seems to be two steps back.
Hope the M2 Air can be better - I think it might as the m2 pro would have been a lot less popular so maybe they’re going to bring in the full force with the M2 Air
Nope, if it get 105С with fan, what will be in fanless model?), m2 chip use same 5nm, even if it is 5nm+ what mean just additional chip size, but not new technology. M3 will be really something new with 3nm if so...
The air will be worse lol
@@BoyProFun The M2 MBP’s fan doesn’t even turn on properly. It literally waits till 100C to start ramping up, and even then it takes centuries to get to a decent speed.
100% a software issue. But the M2 MBA is concerning, it’s thinner than the previous air, and has a newer chip. Hope they make sure it performs properly.
@@Cappyey wouldn’t thinness help heat dissipation since there is a smaller distance to transfer heat from the chip- also the thick body of the m1 pro dosent help and although conducts heat- the thickness dosent help the heat to escape as efficiently
@@user-gc6tv1bh1v If you’re referring to the M1 Pro MBP, then you’re wrong.
It being larger leaves more room for better passive cooling and two higher quality fans.

The best part of this video is your brother doing Amigos adlibs.
Thank you for your honesty mate
Would it be possible to upgrade the storage tho? I mean there’s not many solder balls and it’s not really complicated for an experienced technician to put a few solder balls onto another chip, and then put it onto the board. I know it’s not a user upgradable part but I mean it seems somewhat easier to upgrade the storage, if you have experience with bga soldering.

I heard on the M2 Apple is using one 256 SSD memory chip where on the M1 they used two 128 SSD chips, which deliver much faster SSD speeds due to multi chip/ bus.

Shame Apple didn't take this upgrade seriously. It is still a great computer compared to the whole laptop market but a bit of a meh upgrade from M1. I agree with all of your suggestions - better webcam, magsafe (why did they take it away in the first place?!) and definitely better cooling to compensate for that heat. You'd think Apple would have learned their lesson from the 2016 + versions. Looks like they didn't. To be fair, though, this may also be the result of supply chain shortages. Personally I'd pick up an end of line M1 if you don't need 24 gigs of RAM. Or even an M1 Air, as there is little to no difference in performance between Air and 13 Pro M1. I'm gonna hope Apple gives us one more chance with this chassis at M3 but actually upgrades it properly and finally doing this older model justice from the Intel hot garbage/crappy keyboard fiasco from yesteryear. I'd love an M3 version of this with Touchbar 2, Magsafe, the better webcam and the newer screen tech. Also, Apple could bring back the better, brighter, larger Touchbar 2 as a BTO only, so everyone can choose whether to have it or not have it. That, in my humble opinion, would solve it. Give us Touchbar 2 as a build to order option please Apple. Then everyone can get what they want without compromise. Don't dictate, Apple...offer.
