  • NEW YORK, May 18, 2018 - An extraordinary Korean ritual for the dead that cleanses the deceased spirit, assisting it on the way to the next life, Ssitkimkut involves singing, dancing, instrumental, and theatrical performances. The ritual encompasses poignant expressions of sadness and joy, as well as moments of levity. Asia Society first presented Ssitkimkut with the legendary shaman Park Byung-Chun in 1994. In this performance, the ritual is led by Park's daughter, Park Miouk, who is joined by some of Korea's foremost traditional artists and musicians. (1 hr., 56 min.)

Korea is so interesting -- their feudal period basically lasted until the early 1900's. Since then they have shot into modernity, building an economy that is a high-tech/entertainment powerhouse (South Korea, that is.). Maybe surviving so many wars, coups and disruptions has made them so resilient and adaptive people?. This ceremony/performance is a beautiful living tradition.

The demons are pretty chill beings in Korea, having little interest in human affairs.

1:30:00 Shaman did actual ritual with 3 people. white paper "Jijeon" representing a soul of dead people.
Guy on the left : this man's father has passed away so shaman did kind of prayer for his father's soul can reach to the heaven. and she also prayed for man's future life to be well. During the ritual, the shaman put the white paper "jijeon" on his head which represent his father's soul. and told him to catch the paper with his hand, but unfortunately he dropped it on the floor. I think he was asking to Shaman for if he can try it again... but she just move to the next guy in due to time constraints. :( poor man.
man on the middle : his wife passed away recently, no longer than a year. Shaman did ritual song for his wife so she can go to heaven. The song was simply about the man and her wife made a promise, always be together. but one have to go now. how lonely her soul is. but should move on~ . Shaman also drop the paper on his hand but it didn't fall at the first try. and Shaman was telling him that maybe his wife didn't want to leave him alone and the man also feel the same way, but they both need to let it go. should accept and move on.
Women on the right : her mother has passed away. Shaman did short speech about mother and child relationship. Shaman put the paper on the women head. And this paper should be picked up by shaman when Shaman put paper wand on her. but it did not came up with the wand. Shaman said, her mother still care about their child so she can't leave her yet. Shaman ask to the women that she can say a word if she have anything in her mind that she want to tell her mother, while Shamn do the ritual again.
+ the cloth on front of them is for the soul. it's meaning of present so the soul can wear a new cloth on the way to the heaven.

Maybe it's a stupid question, and probably no one will see it, but: was it done for someone who actually died, or it was presented as a ceremony, without the actual "cleansing" purpose? And if so, is it "ok" to present it as a "show"? I'm sorry for my language, I'm not native English, and I hope I'm not disrespectful or coming across as critical, I'm honestly curious and I would love to learn more!

Your question is very wise and your English is perfect . This particular ritual is held for dead person who just died . Assuming that dead person’s spirit roaming around the earthly realm and wanted send back to the spiritual dimension .
Since I became a Christian , I know shamanism is strictly serving demonic spirits .
You don’t want to participate any of shamanism. I actually witnessed a shaman dancing on the knife with a barefoot and calling her demon to sustain her . The reason a shaman didn’t get hurt from dancing on the blade is that simply her demons in her soul protect her body .
If you read the Bible you can read that “ If Christ in you , you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit .” ( Romans 8:9 )
Just like the Spirit of God protect the children of God ( not in the flesh but in the Spirit ) the spirit of the demon protect these shaman .
And shaman really possessed the spirit of demon to bring supernatural phenomena . I saw two faces of demons hovering over my bedroom ceiling . There was beautiful seven layers of colors behind the face and another face overlapped within few seconds . It probably took less than six seconds before they disappeared but I never forgot two bodiless demons looking down on me . I know it was demonic appearance cause I was involved with sexual perversion and postpartum depression those dark times
I try to explain to you as much as I know .
      From California

This one was dedicated in honor of the father of Dr. Jun-Yong Ha, the mother of Susie Palmer, and Lisa Garcia Quiroz. They're performing a version that has been compressed for modern times, traditional Ssitkimkuts could take up to a few days to complete. They performed the cleansing and it's ok to perform it in this stage setting, they're meant to be kind of festive to help mourners move on too.

@@sundelong2727 May I offer a second opinion both as a Umbanda follower? (brazilian religion based on African traditions that blends Roman Catholicism, Spiritism, and Indigenous American beliefs), these are not demons, they are spirits. And on my religion's hierarchy, it includes pure spirits such as angels, good spirits who are the ones who possesses psychics and bad spiritis/kiumbas who are simply bad. The ones you saw are probably kiumbas. I'm saying this because i've noticed that Korean Shamanism shares a lot of similarities with our religion, that include people like you who thinks every spirit who come down to Earth to pass a message is a demon. This is such a hidrance for the spirits who need to work. And yes they have to COME DOWN because they're much elevated than us, not the other way around. So you don't know anything just because you decided to serve another religion, stop talking shit. It's because of you that no ones respects the Church anymore. You think you can point to a religion and say they worship demons. Shame on you.

@@sundelong2727 Why have you not thought of a number of people who were killed by Abrahamic religions and their beliefs?
They killed more than actual satanic, and demonic religions you claim, ain't it? How did Jehovah and Jesus protect your kinds?
Wise one respects other religions and deities. Seems Christianity is far away from it, following the cases in South Korea. Christianity is toxic and vicious.

Could someone tell me exactly when this tradition originated? I was thinking that it shouldn't be very old, since Korea is a relatively "young" country... but maybe this is just my wrong interpretation. However I couldn't find anything on the internet, nothing at all. Can someone help?

Korea has a history of about 5000 years. Some Western scholars view Korea's history as 10,000 years, including when it was a tribal state.
They have only been divided, reunited, or renamed during that time.
Shamanism has been around since it was a tribal state earlier than 5,000 years. And the current form was completed with all the history of Korea.
The English name Korea comes from Goguryeo, one of Korea's ancient dynasties.
