    Just came across this. Glenmorangie is my go to for a Scotch. The Nectar D'or is one of my favorites. I had the chance to visit the distillery and take a tour in February 2020 right before the world shut down. Thank you all for this series on the various distillery brands.

    I started my scotch journey late in life. I served 26 years in the Navy at at the end of that journey I switched from beer mainly to bourbons and scotch. I found liked non peeled or mildly peeled, single malts the best. Glenfiddich, Glenlevet, Oban, Belvine double oak....etc. I tried and liked very much the glenmorangie 10 as well. On my 50th birthday my son and daughter in law gave me a bottle of SIGNET......WOW. I LOVE IT. My favorite thus far for sure.....now to win the lottery so I can buy it by the case......to be continued....

      Never too late. I had to leave Blighty land. To figure out which one is the best. Problem is mainland UK wants the masses to drink the cheap budget alcohol. It’s up to you to educate yourself on the good stuff.

    I did a solo trip from the US to Scotland last year and had the Glenmorangie original and Quintan Ruban 12yr at the Whisky Experience in Edinburgh. I was not a whiskey drinker until then. It was so delicious that I bought a bottle to lug around in my backpack and bring home. Now back in the states everyone tells me I pronounce it wrong, lol.

    I recently spent a week at a nice hotel in downtown Indianapolis. While sitting at the bar I noticed a bottle of Lasanta hiding behind the other bottles of whiskey. I asked the bartender to pull it out to verify it was Lasanta. It was. And it was about half full. I asked for a dram.
    She never let my glass go empty.
    Even after I paid my bill, she shrugged her shoulders and drained the bottle into my glass, pouring me what was about 3 fingers worth.

    Really appreciate your ‘tour’ of the Glenmorangie lineup. I have enjoyed the Original, Lasanta and 14 Quita Ruban. My wife recently bought for me a barrel select Palo Cortado Finish 12 year. Wow, it blew me away. What a fantastic dram. Definitely several notches up. For me it’s a solid 92+.

      @@Scotch4Dummies I keep a couple boxes each of Lasanta and Quinta Reuben 14 in my cabinet. I alternate equally between them. If I had to choose, I would go with the Quinta Reuben as I did the Port Wood before it. But the thing is .... I DON'T have to choose so I do both! :-) In addition, I have a bottle each Cadboll and Nectar D'or for when I want to change it up a little but mostly stick to the big two.

    Glenmorangie 10 was my first Single Malt, I loved it and still like it. I'll always have a bottle of it in my house. It is also the one I always end up going for when I'm in the mood for a nice, easy dram at night and can't make up my mind. Just recently dried Lasante, Quinta Ruban and Nectar d'Or, all three of them good contenders. On my list is the 18 (maybe for Christmas?), and I wanna at least try the Signet once meaning I'll buy a bottle at some point but no matter how good it might be I just don't see myself stocking a whisky that's way over $200. But for just once, I'll do it.

    I never liked whisky until I tried a single malt whilst visiting the Whisky Experience in Edinburgh. I was hooked at once my first purchase was a 10 year old Glenmorangie. Over the last 18 years I have progressed (through to the 18 year old and the Signet). I am not a big drinker, a enjoy a wee dram now and again, a bottle usually lasts me a year, though I can squeeze the 18 year old or Signet out to 2 years. I always ensure I have at least 1 bottle of 10 year old on the go (for ordinary use and a spare at the back of the cupboard) plus a special occasion 18 and / or Signet bottle ready to savour as required. Also gone mad a couple of years ago and got myself a "Finest Reserve 19 Year Old" which is awesome to say the least.
    Covid travel restrictions have limited my yearly Airport Duty Free re-stocking so I am being extra mean with the "good stuff" at the moment. Fingers crossed for sensible travel returning soon so I can do a re-stock.
    Loved the video, very informative.

    There is a reason that Glenmo was the best selling single malt for a long time. The 10 is a very nice scotch for its price point. I have tried the Lasanta, D'or, the 18 and the Signet. The Signet was delicious, but not a whisky I am willing to pay for, just a bit rich for my blood/budget. I enjoyed the Lasanta and for those that like sherry finished scotches, it is a nice alternative to the standard. Was not a fan of the D'or but I am not a fan of the more wine-based finishes similar to what Tullibardine does. I was very disappointed with the 18. I do not recommend it. True it is an 18 that costs around $100, and that is pretty rare these days, but I did not find it added that much complexity or depth. In general Glenmo offers very good quality at a lower price point than many of their competitors. It is nice they put an age statement on the 10 year expression. There are a lot of good 10 year old whiskies.

    • @Scotch4Dummies

      Seems like the wine casks can be very hot or miss for a lot of people. It really can be harmonious and life changing or slightly off and disjointed. Individual palates vary but the Nectar seems to have fans and critics. I agree with you on the price point being very competitive for the quality. Thanks for giving us your thoughts

    I'm a big fan of Glenmorangie, it's one of the most "honest" SMWs out there. There is a clear structure through their offerings from the original 10yo through all the cask expressions and then the single estate barley variations. I'm a bit worried by Glenmorangie X but other than that they've minimized NAS offerings. Being owned by marketing giant LVMH that is no mean feat.
    Fun fact, Glenmorangie has the tallest copper stills in Scotland and that gives them incredible precision in distillation. 10yo is also the #1 selling malt in Scottish pubs apparently. That speaks volumes. The Scots love whisky but hate spending money. They won't be fooled by marketing. Therefore 10yo represents the best bang for buck of all the major brands I think.

    I've only had the 10 year old and the three 12 year olds. The 12 year Quinta Ruban is probably my favorite of those four (haven't tried the 14 year old version of the QR yet, but am curious). I appreciate the additional 3% ABV over the LaSanta and the original 10 year old and the port finish seems to go well with the Glenmorangie profile. I would like to know why the ABV on the LaSanta was lowered from 46% to 43%. That's a bummer and it wasn't brought up in your video. The 10 year old however is my go-to single malt as where else can you get a quality base malt with a double digit age statement bottled above the minimum percentage for $60/1.75 liter ($50 on sale!). Especially nice in the summer months with its light citrusy profile.

Got lucky and found a bottle of the 14 year Quinta Ruban and like more than the 12 year that's in the sampler pack, more round and a fuller flavor to me. The Nectar d'or is OK but a bit too sweet for me so I won't go for a bigger bottle. Cheers.

    Hi guys, quite the range you covered. :-) One interesting thing though - the always appreciated - Mr Crowell left out was the re-packaging and NAS-ing of the Nectar d'Or. Would've loved to know why this was necessary. I'd grudgingly understand the Sauternes part (see Quinta R), but the age..? That I find sad, especially b/c there once was a 15yo version.

    I have not had the opportunity to taste the full range; of what i have tasted thus far, the Signet is the best.. it would be interesting to find out the taste comparison between the Signet and Macallan 18

    What do you mean by travel retail?

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  4 года назад +1

      There are offerings (by darn near every brand/distillery) that are only available in "duty free" stores which they refer to as "travel retail". It kind of creates a false demand to be honest as it makes it hard to get.... ~Mark

    The explanation of the green 14 years old is wrong! the pre-matured 10 years whiskey is then matured in ruby port cask, for about 4 years, not sherry cask like PX cask.

  • @jrvcfh101
    @jrvcfh101 4 года назад

    QR 12-yr was my entry into Glenmorangie. There is nothing like it. The 14-yr QR lacks the beautiful color and flavor even spending two extra years in the rum casks. This is probably because the casks are refills. Despite the commentary, it's cheaper to reuse old refill casks which is why they did it. Also disagree with the choice to make the Nectar D'or non-age stated. Two very bad moves for a good fan :-/

    Generally, the Scotches that they promote in duty-free shops are significantly inferior! Especially the ones promoted and launched at Duty-free shops in the Middle-east, India, Singapore etc. JW Double Black, Glenlivet Founders Reserve, and a whole lot of non-age statement whiskies - these are travellers who don't know much about good whiskies and are fooled into buying the packings!
