    great review. i stopped playing tony hawk games after 4 i think. my favorites are thps 2 for levels, 3 for trick animations, 4 for fun factor, 1 for getting me into skating.

      Rad Rat Video I disagree with your video on THUG 2. I think the classic mode is great in that game. The levels are not too big and most can be done completely in a 2 minute run. The classic levels they include were a great touch. The American wasteland classic mode was so disappointing with only 6 maps. THPS3 is definitely my #1 though.

    The reason why the n64 removed blood is not because n64 cartridges are limited but because Nintendo decided to make more kid friendly because the n64 target audience is mostly kids. You can also notice that some trick names are renamed in the n64 because of the target audience again, like the long a$$ grind is the big daddy grind, the handy gap is the spanky gap, and the holy sh*t is the holy cow

    "No bam margera" TH games got a little weird when they collaborated. My favorite is either THPS2 or THUG 1.

      Yeah I completely agree. They just wanted to use him because he was getting famous, but I think his influence made the games a lot worse. THUG1 is a positive story about building a career while trying to be loyal to your friends. THUG2 is about grinding cannons so you can shoot down buildings. It's stupid.

      He was good, but is more influencial as a public personality/celebrity/entertainer/Reality TV star than a skateboarder. By the time he was included in THPS, he was already Jackassing it up.

    top notch analysis as usual.
    fav tony hawk game must be 2. The gap to reach the secret tape in School 2 was really satisfying. And then finding out that you could access the inside gym on the same level was a great experience.

    • @RadRatVideo
      @RadRatVideo  8 лет назад +1

      Yeah it really was! You had to get your speed just right and follow the tread marks. School 2 is probably my favorite level in any Tony Hawk game.

    I bought This game by accident and it really changed my life. I went to a game store looking for "3Xtreme" but They don't had that game and the dude told me he had a better game and sold me THPS and it blow my mind! I was getting into skateboarding and punk music and that game was a big influence for me :)

    The fmvs that you unlocked in this game were the real inspiration for me. I loved those. As someone who grew up in the midwest with no other skaters, this opened my eyes to the world.

    this was my favorite TH game. maybe its nostalgia but I loved it. I remember getting the Demo a month or 2 before the game came out on a PS1 demo disc and playing it with my buddies for hours and the demo only gave you a minute then would end lol its crazy to think about now actually

    I got my copy in the mail yesterday and did a play through as Chad. The amount of times I bailed because of kickflip to indys! It’s a great game though, as frustrating as it was the challenge to try and get the high scores was nice. A great game to start of an amazing series.

  • @TVindustries5000
    @TVindustries5000 7 лет назад +1

    the hardest part to me with THPS1 is the fact you cant roll into transition after a grind like a vert skater would do. if you lean into transition it just indicates you're off balance and makes you fall. you always have to ollie out so you set yourself up to either bail or ollie out of the bowl or off a half pipe.

    This is my favorite game of all time. The way you described it as "pure" resonates with me. In a strange way every time they added something new in later games it took something away. It is hard to pin point exactly what went wrong, but I think the satisfaction gained from the simplicity of the original games concept should not be overlooked. Low point scores/combos, more realistic smaller lines, a clear separation between vert/street and the realism attached to landing those tricks in any given scenario not to mention a host of iconic real life skate spots most of which have since been altered or completely removed. It is not just nostalgia. This took the best parts of older skating games such as "Street Skater" and made it work. This game is by no means perfect, but it does not try to be anything it is not. You can feel the arcade influences flowing through the veins of this game as it waves goodbye to the 90's. That is why no customisation options really exist in this game. Not even stats can be altered and it makes total sense considering this was developed for arcades. Anyone still ripping this game has my up most respect! Who needs manuals anyway?

  • @AlvarezAzel

    I have such fond memories of playing this on the Dreamcast in 2000. Infact I owe it to this game for getting me into skateboarding to begin with! literally after a week of playing it me and my friends went to the local skateshop and brought skateboards.
    Granted, when compared to THPS2-4 it dosnt stand up well but at the time this game blew peoples minds.
    The sheer freedom and creativity it offered the player was beyond what other games offered.
    One nice detail I liked with it was the ollie animations, Play as Andrew Reynolds or Tony Hawk, they have different style ollies to that of Geoff Rowley or Chad Muska.
    Great review again btw, looking forward to the others in the series.

    • @RadRatVideo

      That's really cool. I really wonder how many people were inspired to skate by these games.

    I'm curious to your thoughts on 3Xtreme. The Xtreme series got me into skateboarding (3Xtreme was the best looking/playing one IMO) but I don't know of many people what have actually played it. It also is the reason why my skateboarding has always been about speed more than anything else.

    I had the Nintendo 64 version when I was a kid. I didn't play the PS1 version until I played it on an emulator a few years ago. And more recently, I revisited it on an emulator. It's...definitely not aged as well as THPS2.

    Mind was blown when I first saw this at the games store, and all the grabs like stalefish etc on the warehouse level. Second best part was when my friends dad could install a mod chip on the ps1 and just copy the games on a cd-r. That was the first time a console was modded that I know of

    THPS2 was the best in my opinion. I honestly think they could make a new best THPS game by pretty much sticking to the THPS2 formula: just skating (for the most part), real life street spots, similar (and more) challenges, timed runs (possibly optional), similar animation style/engine, tons of hidden areas and levels (a perfect reason to use the getting-off-your-board feature), some funny stuff (like the bullshit that makes a poop noise in the bullring level, the crazy golf-cart-driving security guard in the school level, taxi drivers that say weird stuff when they hit you, etc.), a few contests, maybe even include an arcade in a level where you could actually go in and play the old games, etc., but on a much larger scale with the graphics cleaned up for today's consoles... and NOT AN HD REMAKE. Basically, use THPS and THPS2 as a blueprint. They could really use something like the classics to redeem themselves after the failed THPS5.
    The music would also need to be well thought out, too.

    • @RadRatVideo
      @RadRatVideo  8 лет назад +3

      I completely agree, but I'd be shocked if something like that happened at this point because of how bad THPS5 was. I think the next game, if they make one, will be a new kind of gimmick.

    Hey man you might have missed this- you say you don't have to push (specifically push to gain speed after you fall) but there has always been an option since thps 1 to turn autokick off. With it off you press FLIP while riding to make your character push off amd go. I feel yu should have known this

    I don’t know why they could never seem to get that music video projection on screens, in game, right in all the remasters. To this day I find that effect impressive… Good videos Rad Rat. I’ve been on a Tony Hawk kick going through 2x, 3 and now 4 on Xbox. I tend to look down on the series post pro-skater but after seeing your videos on thug 1 and 2 I’m gonna give them a second chance.

    I noticed in THPS1, Tony Hawk is the only Goofy skater. Even Officer Dick is Regular. Kinda a bummer going back to the game and seeing this.

      The start of the story was pretty cool, hooking up with Peralta and the idea of making a video for him and having to travel to Manhattan to do so.
      It fell off quickly afterwards.
      As I've been playing through skate 3 lately I wish there was more emphasis on a story instead of selling boards. Its such a lackluster way to present a progression.
      I don't think we will ever see a truly compelling story line in a skateboarding game, which is a shame because there are endless templates story writers could pull ideas from.
      Oh well, we can all dream...
      Still waiting impatiently for skate 4. Lol.

    My interest in the series completely died after Underground (with one exception) since that one was one that took a huge step downwards. Up until then my heart and soul as into the serie. Here are my top 5 favorites!
    1. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (A perfection from 1 & 2 with much better graphics)
    2. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 (The free roaming concept was excellent. Superb levels and great soundtrack)
    3. Tony Hawk's Project 8 (I just think this game felt fresh, new engine, graphics and animation was awesome, felt alot like THPS4 but with an u pgrade)

    Great Video, I would give THPS 3 the nod for best game out of the series. The next gen capabilities and it being a launch title really catipolted the games success. In THPS 1 the special tricks were almost like secrets, I remember that even when you would buy a tech deck of a certain pro, It would come with a special trick info so you could know how to perform it in the game. Great Video Rad Rat!

    1 and 2 are my favourites, they feel like Skateboarding games, not games in which you skateboard like the later ones, they had some jokes here and there, the bull shit in Mexico etc, but they felt like they were trying to be real (regardless of the fact you could make a street skater do 1800° christ air if you wanted,) later games felt like they were parodying themselves and trying too hard to be a mainstream game, even though they had pretty mainstream succes when they were trying to be authentic.

  • @WildSkateboarder
    @WildSkateboarder 7 лет назад

    This was a good review but there’s a few things...
    1. You shouldn’t have compared pro skater 2, 3 and 4. Because this was the very first game in the franchise. When underground game around, they had pro skater 4 to base the story mode kinda thing on. But this was the first game so they had nothing to base it on.
    2: they had a low budget for a game back then. They had a budget of $150,000. Not a lot.
    3: the reason they didn’t go all out was for a few reasons. Neversoft’s main focus was on apocalypse! Pro skater became a low budget side project. And they did not expect the demo versions of the game to be the hit that it did! That’s why there were no Manuel’s and reverts and everything. Look what would’ve happened if they put that in there. If they put Manuel’s and reverts in this game, it would make pro skater 2 and 3 less special. You know?

    • @ThorD4602
      @ThorD4602 4 года назад +1

      Budget was definitely a lot more than $150,000:) We had about 15 guys working on the game at NS, and producers and marketing staff at Activision, then marketing costs, the Pizza Hut demo costs, etc. Apocalypse was already on shelves when they started working on THPS, we just used the Apocalypse engine as a starting point. But yes, there was no good model to base this game on, I think that's part of why it came out so well, lots of creative, unbiased thoughts went into it, and a ridiculously good control scheme, especially on PS1.

      I started by doing the games randomly, but I recently started the series from THPS1 and I want to review them in order so I have the right perspective on everything. If I jumped right to 5, I would forget that new feature from THPG that they left out, or something like that.

      Oh, makes sense. You should also check out Evolution Skateboarding 1/2 let you skate as Solid Snake on Mother Base.

      +pointlessfailure I reviewed the predecessor to that, ESPN Skateboarding with Bob Burnquist. It plays the same but it's worse

    I wish the skate series had secrets in their levels I mean they do but it’s so bland in finding them like I remember in underground 2 you had to hand plant a wall in the warehouse to unlock the next section I loved these games and so did my older brothers (I’m the youngest of three) but anyways skate 3 was so bland in finding secrets and it’s fun with friends don’t get me wrong but I’m skate 2 they did have secrets and you could explore the whole map with friends I understand in skate 3 the map was twice as big as skate 2 but it was a dumb idea to just skate in locations with your friends honestly wish they had put more thought into the games or at least got a few ideas from underground 1 and 2 cause those games had a ton of secrets that I didn’t know about when I played the game like unlocking secret characters, grind these five hydrants and something will exploded grind this rail and it will cause this to happen skateboard as a handicap kid or jump through this window you find the Jedi light saber guy like skate should’ve done some of that but it’s understandable if they wanted to go the more how should I say this.. the more “realistic feel” of the game. Good review man

    Unpopulair opinion but eventhough I played thps3, thug, thug 2, wl and project 8 to completion it always felt ok to me.
    Nothing has weight in that series. The first and second one look more like the thing I'm looking for judging by the footage.

    tbh u shouldnt compare this to the other tony hawks as a review when those features wernt avalible then so really when this first came out it was fluid and very easy to get to grips with the engine but yeah thps2 has to be my favourite

    Skate or die was not the only skateboarding game before THSP. Skate or die for NES was a turd. It stole the name from 720 when the swarm of bees come after you it says "skate or die." If anything 720 should get the credit for being the first real skateboarding game, and probably is.

    Tony Hawk Shred NONONONONO FUCKIN THPS3 Why? Because it was more faithful to the series, they still kept Down+Down Flip for a Tre Flip, LevelMod, which adds ALL of the THPS levels including 2X (well the shitty bonus levels) I think that THPS3 is the best looking game in the THPS series 1-4 and THPS3 will always stay in my heart, OH! And this quote "I'll open up a can on ya punk!"

    • @RadRatVideo
      @RadRatVideo  8 лет назад

      Yeah, I've got to agree with you! THPS3 has a great 360 flip, but they started to add in some of the double tap stuff, like the 360 shove its. I think that's a really good balance and I like the way it controls. The graphics were great for the time too.

    Dreamcast for me and not even close. Physics and graphics are much better. I can handle the Dreamcast controller just fine with those two elements being better than the PS1 version.

    seems weird to constantly fault a game for not having features that later games in the series had.
    we get it. you love tony hawk 2 and cant even play the game long enough to pull the manual out of the case you showed us on screen to find the special moves lol

    my fav tony hawk game was definitely either project 8 or proving ground on ps3/360. they had the best animations, and the physics were a lot better, as well as PRoving ground's SIM mode, which made it a little too real. I always thought even the skate series would have looked better using the THP8 or TGPG animations. american wasteland was the best old gen one.

    • @RadRatVideo
      @RadRatVideo  8 лет назад

      Interesting! I remember not really liking the animation in Project 8. I thought the board looked way too short for the skater too. But it's been a long time. I just got a new copy of it and I'm looking forward to reviewing it soon.

    The Dreamcast version is literally the best version. From graphics to controls (I def prefer the DC controls on this one). As said, it's the most "pure" in terms of skating. always felt the game fell off the rails around the third incarnation of the series.
    It always seemed so obvious (to me) that the problem with the later versions of the game was how bombastic everything had to be.

    • @osurocks24

      Starting with the 3rd game in the series (Tony Hawk 3) you started to feel an MTV vibe so I defiantly agree with you especially that they got Bam, I believe from MTV as well, was on the game 3rd game on wise. While it worked it was just way too much at times and should stuck to their roots from the 1st and 2nd game in the series.
