  • With the integration of Canadian Pacific's and Kansas City Southern's locomotive fleets following the CPKC merger (already a little over a year ago), plenty of "Southern Belle" units, as well as a few holdovers of the "Gray Era", have found their way around the Upper Midwest and north of the border. However, one unit in particular is more prized above all the rest; KCS 4006, the "Veterans Unit" specially painted in 2018.
On the night of April 9th, the 4006 snuck across Wisconsin under the cover of darkness on its way to the Belt Railway of Chicago with manifest freight. The very next day, the "BRC" turned the engine around, hooked her up to a CSX/BNSF duo, and sent her right back north on the counterpart train. Though she left Bensenville Yard at a good hour and managed to beat the afternoon Metra "Rush" out of the city, work at Muskego Yard in Milwaukee held her up a few hours, risking that she might not depart further west before dark. In spite of this, I cobbled my camera gear into the car and headed for a spot in Wauwatosa, gambling they would make it out before then. And they did, 15 minutes before sunset. No sooner had the train stormed past me then the light quickly faded away, and any hope anyone further west had of shooting it with it. Lucky indeed!
Enjoy Everybody! There is plenty more to come!
