  • Why Do BMW Depreciate So Much?
Do you wonder why BMWs depreciate so quickly? Do BMW cars hold their value? Let me tell you why they depreciate so much, and how we end up with so many BMWs available.
There are a few reasons that #BMW cars #depreciate. After the warranty, parts and service become costly by comparison. You also have to consider how the BMWs tend to be more of a luxury car, and as a result they're not a necessity. On top of that, your technicians are essentially specialists. They have to be trained by BMW (and this holds true with lots of car manufacturers).
We are always looking for supercars and supercar products to test, drive, and review, so if you would like to see your car, or product on our channel, please contact exoticcarplayplace@gmail.com

The real reason is status. Buying a brand new BMW or Benz means you're doing well so when they're two years old they lose their market. People who buy a used Benz are not the same people who buy a new one. That simple.

Expensive to start with. Do you know that the first 4 years of ownership/leasing ALL of your maintenance service is included which also includes a loaner car? Do you know how many people really maintain their cars the way the manual calls for which includes changing the brake fluid every two years??

For the folks who are hating on them without much basis behind it...yes, they are expensive. Yes, some models are overpriced. However, have you ever sat in one or better yet driven one? The build quality is incredible and the handling is on a whole other playing field compared to cheaper American competitors that are in the same general car class.
Yeah, some people buy them for ego...to try to be flashy or whatever. But many buyers genuinely appreciate the driving experience (which is second-to-none pretty much across the board for BMW), build quality and comfort that comes as a part of the package.
For reliability, if you do your research you'll find they are average overall. It should be acknowledged that part of it comes down to the driver themselves - how well they care for the car and how aggressively they drive it.
Even if you have no intent to buy one, swing by a dealership and take one for a test drive just for shits ‘n giggles. Even if they’re not the car for you, you’ll at least get a good sense of what I’m talking about.

    • @ECPP
      @ECPP  5 лет назад +17

Thanks Jared, I totally agree and thats why I drive them too. I never "got it" until I drove one and then found out why they are what they are, the "ultimate driving machine". I also found Porsche the same way, initially I thought that they were overpriced but then experienced one and realized what all the fuss was about.

BMW uses far too many cheap plastic parts in their engine bay especially in the cooling system. Parts that are made of aluminum in Asian models are plastic in BMW where it is guaranteed to fail over time due to high heat. They simply have no excuse why their electrical components fail so much earlier than others except cheap cost cutting in search of profit.

The motor over heated also and ALMOST warped it. All because of poorly selected plastic material. I read this was a common issue. Way to go German engineers.

Correct. If you know how to work on cars, its no bigger problem then working on older cars.
Only you probably need a computer with diagnostics. But thats no problem, you get cables for cheap on ebay, software you can download for free. You have online part catalog, online wiring diagrams, online technical information etc.
There are so much great information on the internet for these cars. You can even search for your VIN online and get complete information on your car. Not all cars has so much info avaleble.. Its a PITA when friends with other cars asks me for help, and there is no parts catalog, no wiring diagrams or anything avaleble.. When I was young(and foolish), I bought a BMW 323i for $20k, it was 5 years old and thought it was a great deal cause New was over $40k. Well, only after 3 years, dealership gave me $8500. But this amount was the total amount of repairs over the years I’ve owned it. So basically, I just got my repairs reimbursed and the entire $20k purchase was gone. Good news is I traded it in for a 2 year old Prius. Paid $20k and sold if 8 years later for ironically $8500(same $). And had no repairs. I understood why it was so appealing to Lease out a BMW, I would of spent the same money but had a lot of fun and let the next guy deal with the repairs.

Jack Bower Thanks Man. I have more to say. BMW and Audi have a huge markup. Some dealers in my area have dropped 4 series from $66k to $46 on the remaining new 2018 models. They’re all cash offers and have no lease available. Warranty period has already begun, dealership has started writing them off. I estimate normal profit on 2019 would be around $10-15k. So when you’re leasing, the first $10-15k of your payments are just going into their profits so by the time the lease ends, they’ve made their money. Noticed the residual/buyout value at the completion of the lease is very close to book value. So if you surrender the car(and go into a new lease), they can try to sell it for a bit more profit or just wholesale them out at depreciated value. Depending on make, model and condition of the lease returned vehicle.

All expensive cars depreciate for the same reason. Most people who can afford such cars new (buy or lease) want a new one every couple of years - they do not care about the used market. People who cannot afford such cars new would also have problems covering potential maintenance costs for such cars - so the purchase price for the used cars must go down enough to convince these people that the deal is manageable even when factoring in predictable and unpredictable maintenance costs.
Personally, I am currently leasing a 80k car (3 year lease). I got great leasing rates but new cars are never the best investment, of course. However, new expensive cars give me joy (and are liked by the ladies) so I am more than happy to pay the price.
And as he said in the video, German cars are always pushing the boundaries and are cutting-edge. Hence, they are of course more fault-prone than most Asian or US cars that play it safe.

While their insurance paid for my damages it was still a pain to deal with getting it fixed. If they had a backup camera and some backing sensors though, the accident would have been avoided (yes their dumb asses should have been paying more attention too). And surely having backup cameras has saved the lives of some toddlers who were running around behind a car who in years past may have tragically been hit. However unlikely the occurrence, the peace of mind of some of the features is worth it to many parents. And I drive my cars until they die so I don't worry too much about depreciation anyway. @@mattstone8878 Sure but what about better technology for surviving crashes in newer cars versus older ones? What if you feel strongly about going electric for long term lower fuel costs and/or lower pollution?
I get what you are saying. Part of the reason I've kept my car as long as I have (12+ year old car I've had for 10) is because it's a manual transmission which are harder and harder to find and I still enjoy it. But my primary reason for thinking about a new car in the next couple of years is my growing family. Right now the kids are small enough to get in the back of my compact sports sedan with boosters/car seats etc. but it won't be practical in a couple of more years. My needs are much different with a family of four than when I was single and only worried about getting to work or taking a girl on a date. Needs change and priorities change. My finances are in great shape, so there's no reason I'd cram my kids in the back of a car too small for them when I can easily afford one that's better for them. If there happens to be safety or convenience technology available that seems practical, there no harm in getting parking/motion sensors, heated seats, blind spot monitors etc. if the value seems reasonable and I feel the features are usable. There's been a couple of times where our 3 year old has scared us by running out by our moving car to say bye when my wife or I were backing out of the garage. We are training him not to do that, and of course we are always on alert for the kids, but those things happen with kids, so if there is some tech that might help detect situations like that why not? (and of course we won't rely on them) Since I only buy a car every 12 years or so and haven't had a car payment in about 20 years now I tend to go ahead and option it like I want within reason knowing I plan to live with the car for at least a decade. Understand that some stuff is "gimmicky" or might be of limited use. But I'm not the type that goes buying/leasing a new car every 3 years just because of the latest gadget.

After 8 years it was still running on al originals, and that shows reliability of some sort, but warranty went off at 60K (they do give good warranties) and the car started repair bills that were high even from an Indy. I am a female and can't work on cars if my life depended on it (thinking of becoming a trainee), and I could just visualize the yearly repair costs, maintenance costs, not to mention a pair of run flat tires every year (one year front pair, next year rears) and alignment. So since it wasn't paid off I couldn't justify these costs as am cash strapped. Got myself a Subaru Impreza (corners almost as well as the 3 series even though slower). But I do not much about the reliability of Subarus now, compared the well touted Hondas and Toyotas but the bought for the AWD and safety reputation in an economical package for my daily commuting needs.
All I can say, whoever buys my car or any low mileage maintained BMW should either have money set aside (3k a year for repair and maintenance) or have an excellent warranty or be able to fix and do a lot of it themselves. Don't see myself doing it. My car I had the longest was a SAAB. Lots of money on wear and tear but the car was paid for so setting aside 2400 a year was not a stretch. The Subaru is the first Japanese car I have bought in my 27 years here in the US.

I've owned E28, E30, E36, E39 and E46 BMW's (all inline 6's). I've found the replacement parts to usually cost less than Toyota or Honda parts and really no more problems to work on than other brands. I, fortunately, have never had to rely on the dealerships for parts or service. Sure, there are sometimes things that are unreasonably difficult but that's true with any make, model or brand.

    Great video as always.
I've been driving a Honda my whole life. I plan to replace my 8th generation Accord with a newer car soon. Since there are no more Accords in Europe, I started looking at other brands and BMW caught my eye. After a few weeks of research (of all German brands not just BMW) I feel like I woke up from a dream and came to reality where cars break down in ways unimaginable to me.
While driving a Honda, I have never encountered a real car breakdown. Annual maintenance like changing oil and filters, tires, brakes and the like is the only thing I have known so far. All my Hondas were more than familiar with high revs very often. And I never had a single problem.
It is clear to me that the more technology there is in a product, the more things can go wrong. But as far as I understand BMW has big problems with things that don't really have much to do with modern technology. By that I mean oil leaks and chain braking. These are problems with the basic engine parts that every car has.
I don’t understand how one company like BMW that has such top engineers and all the advanced technology is not able to make an engine that doesn’t leak oil from multiple places?
German car owners often praise their cars and say they are reliable. They say that they should be invested in and that they are reliable then. According to that philosophy, Alfa Romeo is also a reliable car when it is constantly invested in.
Don't get me wrong. I am not a fan or hater of any brand. I’m just trying as an average buyer to get an objective view of the market situation.
I like your channel. You gave me a lot of useful information. Thank you and keep up the great work. :-)

Japanese cars like honda and toyota are plentiful because of how common those cars are in the US. I agree with what you said in your video and also want to tell something about classic BMWs. I am the owner of a used 1989 BMW E30. I found it in a scrap yard and had to make a lot of repairs to the road. In spite of that, I can confirm that the level of reliability of this car is great, probably because of the lack of very complex technologies installed on it. The structure of the car is strong and well made, the certainty to go on driving this car for a very long time is just confirmed. Up until the 1990s they turned out solidly engineered and reliable autos. Now they turn out spit n paste, unreliable junk for the lease market. Toyotas and Honda are over engineered, however have tolerances that make them much more reliable.

Hi Mister Meth and Mark, just want to weigh in. My friend owns a company that make stamped metal parts for most major auto manufacturers. He told me that Toyota is his favorite customer because they have very little oversight and have looser tolerances than GM and others (I couldn't remember the others). He said that GM used to send a bunch of suits (that is what he calls corp people:) to his factory floor to check up on him. Scotty Kilmer (a popular auto RUclipsr) said that Honda has gone well down hill and only considers Toyota and Ford (believe it or not) to be the best manufacturers. Regarding German cars, they have a lot of safety sensors because they are designed for 120 mph all day autobahn driving. I have driven Japanese cars most of my life and bought my X5 3.5d new in 2011 and think it is an amazingly solid car. Just wanted to share that info with you.

You name it and it leaked. I took it to the Acura dealer for everything service and mx action. My wife had a 1994 Honda Civic coupe which was completely trouble free til we sold it in 2001. My theory is to buy the mass appeal Honda or Toyota. For example, my Legend was a suped up Accord, so I should just buy the Accord. A well maintained BMW is very reliable ... that's not why people lease them ... it's so they can swap it out with the current / new model every 3-4 years, as they want the latest and greatest. You can extend the warranty of a BMW to 7y/125k for 5% of the cost of the car, so if people want to keep it that long , they can (it's also transferable). All of the Germans now have a mid life cycle refresh just because of this, so after 3-4 years there will be a update (911 991.1 -> 991.2, BMW x to X LC) etc. Adding subtle styling changes, power bump and new tech.
So for a $60k 540i you pay $4,800 up front, for 7 year maintenance, replacement of wear and tear parts (brakes etc.), and extended warranty for unexpected broken parts (like water pump, turbos etc.).
The BMW Ultimate Care program covers all factory-recommended scheduled maintenance services as determined by the Service Interval Indicator for all new eligible model year 2017 and later BMWvehicles. ... The maintenance coverage period is for the first 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.
This mean for $685/year you have full maintenance, full warranty and replacement of wear and tear elements, inside 7 years / 125,000 miles.
And 3 year old they sell for around $39,000, so dropped 35% ... pretty much the same as a Toyota Corolla ...
Now if you take an M3/M5 they do drop more, as they will be $100k + and people might drive them harder, knowing this they want a new or low mileage car, but same goes for any high-risk car.
The other part is that the cars (high-end) are driven much harder than your 1.2L Toyota, which mean more load on all parts, and even if they are engineered 'better' they do wear faster, and if you do not maintain them properly they will wear/fail more frequent, but if you drive your M3 like an old lady it will be as reliable as your grandmas Lincoln Town car ...
Yes, the BMW E60 M5 was / is known for the rod bearings ... guess what ... people keep revving these cars when cold, when the parts are not heated up and oil is slow flowing doing a ton of wear and tear of the car. I have a E92 M3 (same issue), but my rod bearings look pristine ... why? I never sat and revved the car to show off, or more than 25% throttle till the car was warmed up, did all the maintenance, use of proper oil, and hence ... 0 issues ... (only issue I had was broken A/C but that was due to hitting a deer, and it was not discovered that metal parts had come into the A/C unit, so it broke down ... covered by insurance, but did add a huge additional cost (as the engine had to be removed to re-do all the A/C parts). Other than that ... my tank-lid lock worn out ($17 to replace, did that myself), and my passenger side window button did not go up, but a blast of compressed air fixed that as well (car is now 11 years old and still running strong and fun). Would I have bought one used ? NEVER ... because I know a lot of people don't know how to break in and run a high-performance car (lot of US cars people like to run hard during run-in period), I even asked Porsche specialist (when taking European delivery, and he said, no follow the break in instructions, they are there for a reason ...).
I would state/claim that lot of this is urban legend, and people are always pointing to the M cars (that have been driven as they were stolen). Granted there have been specific issues that BMW missed due to lack of tests, but in general they have honored fixing these, even up to 8 years after new (my previous M3 E46 had known issues with cracks in the sub-frame ... BMW fixed that at no cost when car was 8 years old).
Edit: As of 2014/2015 Ultimate Care+ are no longer transferable.

BMW ULTIMATE CARE coverage is not transferable.
BMW has cut down the coverage for model year 2017 or later.
When you own The Ultimate Driving Machine®, you should get the service to match. All new MY17 BMW vehicles and newer come with BMW Ultimate Care. BMW Ultimate Care consists of scheduled maintenance for the 3-year/36,000 mile (non-transferable), whichever comes first.

@@dennis007 You are 100% correct (I sit corrected). I mixed my BMW and Porsche extended warranties (Porsche is transferable, BMW is not (even say so "Cars after 2014/2015 Ultimate Care is no longer transferable"), which is a pity, as I would assume people are less hesitant to buy a car private if they got 1y+ warranty with it ...

What do you expect for old 7 series?
The same thing happens to old mercedes S-class
Electronics over time getting fucked and parts needs to be change due to lean manufacture tactic from car manufactures.
Now parts don't last 30years but maybe 5-6 years, especially in German cars.
This is also came from reverse logistics and business tactics from cars manufactures.
Here in center Europe german cars are better built then this in US so if you can get car from europe if you can.
If you want realible car get Lexus/Toyota or maybe Honda.

Why are people willing to part with so much money for brands like BMW and Land Rover? Not that they are the only questionable brands or that these vehicle themselves are bad but really? I live in Los Angeles and there are many cool expensive cars sitting idle with me in traffic. How often are these high performance cars driven at their limits in metro areas? Maybe for a 15-20 seconds on a sweeping turn or an acceleration burst to 85 MPH? Unfortunately, the USA does not have an Autobahn or Autostrada to drive these cars like they were designed for and I don’t know of any late model LR owner that actually off roads or overlands. Unless you autocross or off-road regularly, this brief moment of vehicle enjoyment is probably less than 1 percent of your total ownership time.

You pay a premium for the car, parts service etc but the BMW's are still not as reliable than Japanese or Korean cars. That is why the demand is low and the supply is high. Owners or leasers are not keeping them longer and brand loyalty is in decline. Check the numbers in the last 5 years, new car ownership of BMW's are stagnant or dropping year over year compared to premium Japanese manufacturers.

Not sure where this guy got the idea that only BMW service dept can fix your BMW. There are many non BMW auto shops can fix them too. BMW charges you more per hour to fix the car. Issue is the cost of the part. Throttle Body should not cost $750 to replace. It’s a small module. BMW typically loses 45 to 50% of its value after 3 years.

I went shopping for a used car for my college daughter.
    1. 2005 Toyota Highlander AWD ~$30K new. Now $5000.
    2. 2008 BMW X5 ~$60K new. Now $5000.
Which car did I choose? Highlander of course.
My 525i with only 156K it’s falling apart unless I’m willing to spend tons of money to replace very expensive parts.
My Toyota vehicles (Avalon, Highlander, Sienna, Supra, Prius, Camry) all run flawlessly with minimal maintenance even at 250k miles or more.
I still take my 2005 Sienna with 276K miles on road trips. The Sienna still have original engine, transmission, AC, fuel injection, suspension, main electrical systems, fuel pump and paint.
Can’t speak the same for my other brands from three different continents including other Japanese brands.

Dude you are SO correct. Once the car is past the first three years they're not reliable. I'm going through that now. I bought a used low mileage 750Li. The price was great and the carfax, maintenance and manufacturer recalls were all good. So I bought the car. Two days later I got a check engine light. As of this post I've owed the car less than 30 days and I'm on my 3rd check engine light. I'm already scared as hell to drive it. I'm going to get rid of it as soon as I can. I'm going to take a huge loss on it unfortunately, but I'll have piece of mind.
I'LL NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER BMW.
