I discovered this video late at night and couldn’t sleep after watching it. Because of the extraordinary clarity and drive of your pianism in both precision and attack, (specially the scherzo) one can only stand in awe of Beethoven’s original concept, Liszt’s adaption, and your achievement in bringing this marvel into the World. The only thing missing was the Royal Festival Hall with a capacity audience to lift the roof with their applause at the finale. What a tragedy so few people were in attendance but what a blessing it was filmed for the whole of humanity to savour at their leisure. Thank you so much for such a spectacular and inspiring achievement by all concerned. Despite all that’s going on in the World this makes you proud to be a member of the human race. Please continue on your journey to bring more glories into the World.
the fact that Liszt always had a great appreciation for the work of other artists such as Beethoven, made his work one of the most varied and rich in the erudite repertoire.
That gentle passage beginning at 56:03 is a lovely moment for me, especially in the orchestral version. Every time I've played this I have smiled at that very moment.
Franz Liszt must havw known that his piano transcription ob Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was impossible to play on one piano; perhaps only by himself. This performance for two pianos and timpany was absolutely breathtaking, stunning. Thank you and bless you for this performance.
There is a pianist named Cyprien Katsaris who has achieved the impossible: playing the ninth symphony with just two hands. ruclips.net/video/Ja7ZkvP8Nrk/видео.html Enjoy =D
Liszt, after having transcribed all symphonies up until the 3rd movement of the Ninth, had wished his publisher (Breitkopf & Haertel) to regard it as complete. At the end of transcribing the 3rd movement, Liszt points out that (NB) he had previously arranged the 4th movement for two pianos. He then writes, in the manuscript, translated from German: "The impossibility of an even partially satisfactory arrangement of this highly polyphonic choral-orchestral movement on *one piano* excuses its omission on the present edition of the Beethoven Symphonies." followed by a French idiom: »À l'impossible nul n'est tenu.« Well, after that, Liszt's publisher tried to convince him... and the rest was history.
A marvelous 2 piano transcription of the wonderful Beethoven Symphony No. 9, performed by two extraordinary pianists. Many thanks to K. S. for sharing it.
If I were to be told that Beethoven had originally intended this to be performed like this I'd believe it now. Really astonishing and utterly enjoyable. Thank you for bringing it to the world.
Beethoven's awesome concepts, Liszts' respect and responsiveness to the composer's work and the awesome conciseness and precision of these two pianists makes this video recording an archive for the ages!
This symphony is the culmination of Beethoven life’s work. I can hear the different styles and moods from his three eras as a composer. Absolutely genius. And these kids perform it in a sublime way.
Great arrangement! Great performances! Pity it can only be enjoyed via RUclips, but also great videography, giving us various views of the performers. Kudos to the page-turners. I have turned pages for a pianist (my father) and it is nerve wracking, keeping focused and making the page at just the right point so the pianist can absorb the notes in the last measure of the page and turn in time to take in the first measure of the next page. Keep that up for over an hour. It's not easy.
@@borisbrinkmann No kidding, I was just complimenting the interpretation, and how the score changes and use of expression make it sound much better than the average performance of this transcription. It is very obvious that the original work is better, you can do a lot more with a full orchestra than 2 pianists and a percussionist. Anyways, do you have any specific conductor of whom you really think goes above and beyond that you'd want to share with me? I would like to know
Wow! Totally underwhelming audience...a tragedy. This one's for the archives. How better to get a grip on the 9th than Liszt's piano "reduction". BEAUTIFULLY played!! Thank God for the Internet to preserve this rendition. Kudos!! (and greetings from L.A.)
I think this may have been primarily a “recording session” (as opposed to a concert) with perhaps an invited audience of friends. If so, their goal was accomplished! They got a stunning video recording. This is one for the ages.
Wow what a beautiful performance of this masterwork. Glenn Gould referred to these transcriptions of Beethoven's Symphonies for piano as " Super Sonatas"! Thank you very much for these posts and hope to see more uploads from you.
@@ttrons2 said “One of the great tragedies is he died so young”. Who? Beethoven at 56? Gould at 50? Or Liszt at 74? For my money, Beethoven at 56 was the greatest tragedy.
What a pleasant surprise!! I have listened to excellent renditions of single piano renditions of the Liszt transcription 9th performed by Katsaris, Yuri Martynov, Glen Gould and Tristan Lauber but this 2 pianos and timpani version offers additional colours and depth. Bravo! Many thanks to all of you (three musicians plus the sound and video engineers). Keep on the great works!!
Are you quite sure you heard Gould play #9? I'm aware of him playing only 5 and 6. I have all his recordings, but it's possible that he played it on a radio program, although I'd be very surprised.
Gould did not record the 9th, and I cannot find any verification that he ever played it. But it is no great loss. His performance of the 5th and 6th, and the second movement of the 7th, all sound more like a Bach preludes than romantic-era symphonies.
Speechless! The coordination is out of this world, not to mention the skill it needs to perform this whole piece! Time well spent guys! Congratulations for your life purposes!

Wow, this is great! Very well played and the recording and camera work are excellent also! I love the additional timpanini and triangle too. And the pianists work so well together. Just another student performance at the Royal Academy. Really, one of the best music videos I have ever seen on RUclips. Now, I get to hear Dudamel and the LA Phil play this soon. I wonder how it will compare...
An interesting transcription of the Ninth, and nicely played. Beethoven’s Ninth is the greatest symphony ever written. I do prefer the symphony version, and attend its performance whenever I am able. Thanks for the video.
Wow! Wonderful! I played this at least twice during my 40 years as a double-bass player, and let me tell you, it is a terribly difficult work to perform. (from northwest Arkansas, USA)
Liszt made this transcription because there were hardly any orchestras which could play this music. The French built the first orchestra specifically to play the Beethoven Symphonies.
Holy cow Batman! That there are people that can bring such beauty and life into the world is just astounding. Nothing I can say will come close to expressing my thanks to these three musicians and their supporting group (video, audio, logistics) for allowing us to see and share in your gifts and hard work. Thank you!
