We made this for a good old fashioned country Texas family reunion at Fort Parker, Tx in about 2009. We won first prize awarded by the 80 year old elders. They said it tasted like their grandmas recipes. Good stuff!
I used to work in downtown Los Angeles and at that time there were usually people selling little bean pies on the corner and many of us would pick one up for breakfast or lunch, they were a little different from what you’ve shared here but they were really good. They were smooth and more like pumpkin pies. 🤷🏻♀️
I think I saw theirs online. If I remember correctly it was a little different than mine. I'm using the one I found in my MIL's stuff. Hope you like this one, we loved it.
We had this when i was a child on our farm in western North Carolina. My Mom couldn't afford pecans so wed hav an occasional, "soup bean" pie. Very delicious!
This is pretty similar to my recipe for oatmeal pie where you add quick oats instead of the beans, and also add chocolate chips. I know that is delicious, so this should be too! 😋
It tastes a little like Pecan Pie too. But there is no corn syrup in the recipe like Pecan Pie has in theirs. I think there is a slight taste of pinto beans in it, but my son says he can't taste the beans at all. He loves it.
I lived in Peru many years ago and found a dessert called strained beans, frijoles colados, as I recall. You learn the most unexpected things things when you live in another country. And navy bean pie is popular in some segments of our population. I think most any bean would be successful. Personally I would strain the beans first.
I have to say I have never heard of that but it kinda makes since instead of using a full cup of pecans like you would for pecan pie you replace have the pecans with pinto beans. Genius!
I've had this year's ago however cinnamon, nutmeg, pinch of ground cloves, brown sugar, honey ,1 eggs beaten, butter. It tasted more like a sweet potatoes pie ..you know more in that flavor profile , of course everything should be seasoned very well Meats ,sweets, taters and maters .I don't believe in just salt and pepper, I mean who likes bland food?? 🤔🤦🙄. @@janetsmart-countryliving1059
@@dianewilliams9858 I saw those others on the internet. I agree they looked and sounded more like a pumpkin pie. You could do both kinds to take the place of your pumpkin and pecan pies.
Well this would definitly be a great recipe for people increasing healthy proteins and just making it in a small mug or pan! I try and eat beans every day but really get tired of it so YES, Thanks!
I love me some pinto beans. Never thought I'd ever see a pie with pintos. Only trouble is mine typically have hog jowls, smoked ham hocks or bacon, smoked deer sausage, jalapeño, tomato, onion, garlic, cilantro and chicken bullion in them. I've never made bland or plain beans. I bet canned pintos would work excellent with this since I never have any without meat and seasoning in them. Pie looks good, though. That's one heck of a way to get protein in your pie 😅 looks so good, think I'll give 'er a try. ❤
Worldwide favorite! First one I ever had was at a hole in the wall seafood place owned and operated by a Muslim family. Traditional in their culture, they said. You can substitute just about any dried beans.
There is a sweet Chinese pastry called sesame balls that is filled with a sweetened paste of mashed beans and it is delicious, so I bet this would be a similar flavor... :)
Hi Janet! This recipe looks great. Is the coconut that you added sweetened or unsweetened? I'm going to be making this soon but just prefer your answer rather than me guessing. Thank you so much!!😊
My thought as you poured it in the pie shell was ‘looks like a pecan pie’. Baked it looked like a pecan pie. You didn’t say what it tasted like. Wondering why people would make a sweet pie using beans? Was it a depression thing? Some history on it would be nice. It looks yummy!!
Sorry, but I really don't have any history on it. I looked and there are a lot of versions on the internet, and they really didn't say anything about the origin of it. It could be depression era. I know it's been around for a while, because the recipe I found of my MIL's looked pretty old. Yes, the taste reminds you a lot of a pecan pie -- without the corn syrup or extra pecans. I'm thinking people usually cooked a big pot of beans (like my husband does) and just tried to think of what they could do after 2 or 3 days with the leftovers. It is very good.
Not gonna lie it sounds weird but I bet it tastes fine as you said. I bet you could make a tasty savory pinto bean pie for sure with corn , ground beef, tomatos, gound beef, garlic onions. Then you could make 2 pies and use the can of pinto beans up. That way you would have a dinner and a dessert! Although the more you add to the savory pie you might need to go to a casserole dish without the pie shell! Lol.

@sherrydurham2220 when I was comparing her recipe with some I saw online, the other ones had even more sugar and butter in their recipes than in hers. I like that it has no corn syrup, and the beans give it some protein which is unusual for a pie.
Me too. Most people saw ewww, but you can barely taste the beans.
