  • "Rise of The Tyrant" By Arch Enemy was the first metal album I bought with my own money back in the day. Since then, the band has change Quite a bit and I , of course, have not kept up at all! I know, I'm terrible. Alissa White-Gluz is, as you all already know, a tremendously talented vocalist and Listening to her voice was a blast! Lets talk about amazing breath support, wonderfully balanced tone, and expert level distortion while I react to and analyze "The Watcher" by Arch Enemy!

I was in the crowd right in front of the scene during their shoot for the video and when she told us that they were recording for it, the crowd became insane !! There were moshpits everywhere and so many people crowdsurfing... Definitely a concert that I'll remember even if I was not able to listen to the concert as carefully as I would have liked with all the bumping around and carrying people... At least this is my excuse to try to see them a second time live ^^

I am so jealous of you! Was there in 2009 and can relate to the carrying of people ^^ Had 2-3 people(my gf and other girls) in front of me so it came down to my neighbor and me to hand crowdsurfers to security. Loved (almost) every minute of it, let's say army boots are an acquired taste.. !..!,

Great reactio! Gotta love Arch Enemy! Trivia of the day; when Nightwish let Annette Olson go, Alissa and Elize Ryd from Amaranthe came to rescue. Alissa sang with her one NW gig with "normal" voice. She's good at that too! Next; Finnish death metal band Amorphis and their harsh singer Tomi Joutsen who does both harsh and clean singing. Excellent example of this is song called "Death of a King".

Great (and instructional!) video. The Watcher - from the album Deceivers - is one of the very few AE songs where I didn't catch all the lyrics the first few times (The Race is another, similar, older song) just because of the sheer *speed* she's coming out with the growls. I admit that if I can't catch at least the majority of the lyrics I lose interest really fast but the chorus is so catchy it got a lot of replay!
One thing I have noticed from other recent AE songs - In the Eye of the Storm for example - is that the diction is so refined that auto-generated English subtitles can pick up phrases! (I use subs a lot for necessity - mostly you see [music] or [applause] and occasionally [foreign])

Great video! Ive been a huge fan of Alissa’s voice for a while now and hearing you break it down was really insightful. If at any point you wanted to hear her in more of a chaotic flashy deathcore-ish style, then check out her old band The Agonist. The song “And their eulogies sang me to sleep” is quite chaotic with lot more of variations of screams, gutturals, some pterodactyl like sounds and just a lot in between. Her overall voice was much different from now in Arch enemy and I think It would definitely be a very informative video

Nice! Yeah, I was very pleasantly surprised by the new Arch Enemy and, like you, kind of forgot about them for a while. I was also kind of skeptical about Alissa in AE because I’ve always liked false chord vocals more in death metal but her tone and phrasing is incredible. That’s interesting about the possibility of blending false chord/fry…I was having a hard time picturing what she was doing at times as her lows do sound kind of false-y, which sounds awesome IMO. If you do another track, check out the first single (Handshake with Hell) which even has some cleans thrown in!

I’m stoked you finally did and AE reaction! We actually worked on an Arch enemy song for my first fry lesson. I was really surprised when I joined her patreon to learn she is actually a false cord vocalist. I would love to see more Arch enemy (War Eternal would be a great one). I’d also recommend checking out her song with Carnifex if you wanna cater to the deathcore crowd but also check out more of her work.

I think the song writing is also different since Angela left. The music has a pop-metal vibe in the choruses. I prefer the darker heavier style of their older music, even though I think Alissa’s voice is great.
