  • You guys asked for it in the comments! Here are the stats that got me into my TOP CHOICE Dentals Schools, and some of the most competitive schools in the country.
    1:20 - what happens if you have transfer, AP or community college credits
    2:01 - My overall and science GPA in undergrad
    3:20 - How I did in my dental school prerequisites
    4:07 - Why you shouldn’t have a Withdrawal (W) or CR/NCR from you school unless is absolutely necessary
    5:01- How dental schools calculate GPA
    7:09 - Why dental school admissions pages warp your perception of the DAT
    7:59 - The DAT score you should aim for to be competitive (according to my school’s Pre-Health Department)
    9:00 - Walking into the DAT ( + MY SCORE)
    10:25 - Why there’s a method to the madness on each section of the DAT
    12:53 - If you’re in the application cycle right now, DON’T get sucked into SDN threads

    Something really terrible about comparing yourself to these SDN chats is that you see yourself as just another applicant. It is so important to advocate for yourself regardless of your quantifiable qualifications, and recall that you are entering this field because you have so much to offer.

      ABSOLUTELY! I couldn’t agree more that with the advent of social platforms you always feel like just a number, but if you’re a person who is truly passionate and genuinely loves the field for what it is, that definitely comes through, even on paper.

    In terms of taking course prerequisites in university for dental school, would some dental schools disapprove of my decision to take something like orgo II over the summer? Btw, I love your videos!!

    • @SmilesPending
      @SmilesPending  2 года назад

      It definitely looks worse if you take a science requirement at another school or community college. If you’re taking 1 or 2 science classes over a summer and you do well that wouldn’t look bad on you. Just make sure you have semesters where you’re taking more than one science class at a time to show them you can handle the rigors of dental school

    Thanks for the video!! Do you think it is better to go to a big or well-known university and to get quite a lower gpa, or to go to a university that is easier to get a high gpa even though it is not big or well-known??

    • @SmilesPending
      @SmilesPending  2 года назад

      Your GPA makes a big difference in getting your foot in the door. Ultimately you don’t want to have an extremely low GPA anywhere because you’ll have to work much harder to make up for it in other ways! As for the name of a school, dental schools make an internal determination of whether a school gives “easy As” by looking at how applicants scored on the DAT vs their GPA in the same subject areas. So if your GPA is very high but you don’t do well on your DAT, they won’t weigh your GPA highly because that tells them you don’t have a very strong science background or your school makes it easy to get good grades. You should be going wherever is cheapest otherwise because dental school is already a lot and you don’t want to be walking out with tons of loans from undergrad too

      Definitely heard of people getting in with those scores. But in general, only apply to schools you’d be happy going to. I applied to 7 but wish I applied to fewer, most people I know applied to 10-15 schools. Just make sure none of your dat sections are below a school’s cutoff

    • @SmilesPending
      @SmilesPending  2 года назад

      Like I mentioned in the video, they could see my transcript grades which were not as high as they would expect for dental students. So I did really well on my DAT because it’s the same material you learn in undergrad pre requisites and it showed that I had the ability to understand the material and recall it. There’s also a section on AADSAS that asks “is there anything you want us to know” where I mentioned why a semester in particular was bad due to outside circumstances.

    Hello, perhaps you can answer this question for me please ...when you have the time ofc . I've recently graduated and applied to a Community College because it's what I can afford right now. I plan on majoring in Biology or psychology. I've recently had an awakening and felt in love with the idea of becoming a Dentist (also I want to prove to myself that I can do this and be successful). Do you think attending a Community College will hurt my chances of attending a Dental School? Please share your thoughts with me about this. IM STRESSING lol.
    Side note: I plan on taking leadership positions in college and also volunteer.

    • @SmilesPending
      @SmilesPending  2 года назад +1

      Hi! First of all, congrats on figuring out your calling! I definitely wouldn’t say starting at a community college hurts your chances as long as you do the following things: don’t take your science prerequisites at the community college because many dental schools want your science courses done at 4 year universities, make sure you focus and do the best you can in the classes you do take (FYI you absolutely don’t need a science major to go to dental school. I had friends major in history, math, art etc and gone to dental school) and also, make sure that you put focus into dental experiences. Shadow lots of dentists and show that you have experience in this field and it’s really what you want to do. Definitely volunteer, like you said that’s always a good plan (300+ hours is best) but overall DONT BE DISCOURAGED by where you are, because your story is unique to you and if you’re dedicated you WILL get there❤️ (plus this will probably make a kick ass personal statement)

    Ok so si went to a community college and did super bad (probab;y D or A F) in one of my history classes. I am retaking the classes but do you think something like this would affect my chances?
    I also took CHEM 2 in cc but I am retaking that classes at university because I got a bad grade . Doo you think that's a better idea?

    • @SmilesPending
      @SmilesPending  2 года назад +1

      So you definitely don’t want it to seem like a pattern of getting bad grades. A couple Cs or Ds are okay especially if you retake and do well, but Fs are more of a red flag.
      You also don’t want to take ANY of your science prerequisites at a community college because that never looks good and you want to give yourself the best chance given the other grades. You need to keep in mind that dental schools will see all universities and colleges you’ve taken classes at. You should have either a really good reason for the grades or show a strong upward trend in those same subjects with higher level courses. It’s definitely not impossible, there are people who get in with 2.9 GPAs or lower but your grades should be your main focus for now.
      Aside from that, make sure your extracurriculars are strong (lots of shadowing, volunteering, working as a dental assistant) and remember that you’ll need to ace the DAT to compensate for the grades.

      @@SmilesPending thank you for the reply! I think have only gotten like 2 C and 1 D . I am retaking the general chem 2 class in university again cause I want to get a better grade. • @SmilesPending
      @SmilesPending  2 года назад

      You can definitely explain that but at first glance it wouldn’t look good. Maybe take another history class to show you can do well in that type of class. Humanities are not unimportant. Dental schools really care about those things too

    • @SmilesPending
      @SmilesPending  Год назад +1

      Unfortunately yes. Most schools will not accept prerequisites from a community college. You would likely need to retake them at a 4 year university but I would check with the specific dental schools you would consider going to. They could usually accept 1 or 2 courses but the academic rigor is what they’ll question.

    How are you going to pay back tuition at Columbia. I feel like it's more on the expensive side.

    • @SmilesPending
      @SmilesPending  Год назад

      Tbh the cost is pretty much on par with any other non-state dental school where tuition is subsidized by taxpayer dollars of the state. Looking at any school that’s private, (think UCLA, Tufts etc) tuition tends to be the same and the only difference is cost of living, and nyc is ofc a pricier place to live in. The starting salary for a general dentist in most places is about 100k but that’s not your cap. Adding a variety of procedures to your armamentarium, and choosing which (if any) insurances to work with will play into how much you can make. Also, many of my classmates tend to specialize and their staring salaries will automatically be higher

    • @SmilesPending
      @SmilesPending  2 года назад

      That genuinely wasn’t the intention! I wouldn’t say I had a high GPA as an applicant because many of my friends applying had 3.7-3.9s. However, the point was that it’s a balance! A lower end GPA can be balanced by a high DAT but the gpa in general should be above 3.0 for both science and overall to be at least a little competitive. Also doesn’t hurt to take more classes to try and raise your gpa if you have time in undergrad

      @raquel8493 2 года назад

      @@SmilesPending There are two types of gpa one is the cumulative gpa which is the gpa calculated from all courses you take during the undergraduate that includes "eg. humanities " and then there is the science gpa which is the gpa of only science courses calculated. For the individuals stated 3.9 gpa was their overall gpa or was the science gpa?

    • @SmilesPending
      @SmilesPending  2 года назад +1

      Yes I’m aware of the separate GPA calculations lol. I think what you’re referencing is where I gave examples of students that I’ve seen be accepted particular dental schools. Many people had very high science and overall GPAs. Meaning some people had something like a 3.9 in both science and overall.
      But I think you’re missing the point of the video. My point is that your numbers are important but not everything. I got accepted with GPAs and DAT scores that some schools might consider lower than their average. If you’re interested in what the average stats are for accepted students, most schools have an admissions pages where those numbers are provided. hope that helps.
