The best measure of a true friend is the loyalty exhibited long after someone has died and unable to defend themselves. Lowenstein is clearly the right guy to make this Hutchence biopic by diligently dispelling the autoerotic asphyxiation mukrake. Trust is the basis for him being able to extract real insight and novelty from the key players in Michael's life - and it is terrific that the director is so genuine and caring. He remains a loyal friend 22 year later in his demystifying tribute.
Where is this film/documentary? Is it somewhere on utube? It looks and sounds so detailed and done with love and care. Lots of great information. 🤔💖💫🌟💗💞✨
Love this interview! Love the depth he goes into in his answers. Richard - please release a longer version - your 4 hour documentary idea - for his fans! Who cares if a majority of people wouldn't sit through it in the cinemas. Just do a private release of it & the real fans will buy it for sure - I know that I would. I would definitely sit in the cinema for 4 hours watching a documentary on him. I'm sad that the investors pressured you to keep it under 100 minutes. I remember looking at the length of the film before I saw it & was disappointed that it was so short. I was hoping it would be 2+ hours long. Great work on the documentary (regardless of length) and please consider doing some sort of longer release for his real fans. We would love to se this!
An astonishingly beautiful film - and a lovely interview. The love and respect Richard Lowenstein has for all the people involved shines through 'Mystify'. A wonderful experience - thank you Richard - and thank you Jim for posting the interview video.
Thank you Richard. You are such a great man and film-maker. I am a proud fan of Michael and the band. It's wonderful to hear your stories of your friendship with Michael and your thoughts about INXS music. You speak with such honesty and sincerity and without any arrogance. I'm proud to call you a fellow Australian. Keep up the good work mate!
This movie is a phenomenal achievement. As someone who grew up in the 80s, I was a massive fan from the very beginning. I was super fortunate and saw INXS live several times. Michael Hutchence was a force of nature, and IMO utterly peerless. He was truly a light to behold. His story is so uplifting, which makes his end so much more unspeakably tragic. I miss him to this day.
I agree with both of you. Every possible charming and positive quality in on person is unusual. He had it spades. I honestly now think he was truly a poet. In the 80s all you could see on Mtv was his face, and I was never a fan of what was popular. However I was a Jim morrison/doors fan and read Jim's poetry books and something about Michael reminded me of Jim. At the time I thought he was doing this on purpose, but I later realized he wasn't. I thought the doors music was vastly different from inxs but there are some similarities in the poetic lyrics of searching or never tear us apart. He was born to be a frontman Rockstar. His voice was so rich.
It's also very sweet that Tiger saw this first and loved it. I have often hoped she knew how great her dad is. But being his daughter and an absolute mini me, she has to have some of his empathy and intellect.
I was a huge admirer of INXS namely Michael, a member of his fan club as well. I also met Richard when I produced a film during secondary school at Film Victoria. Great interview with a lot of insights . I'm going to see the film tonight with trepidation. I think it's a bittersweet ending to a complex individual.
"Beloved Michael, today we remember you. I was 7 years old when I seen the video "Need you tonight" it wasn't until I was older that I had begun to fully appreciate you, besides Chris, Morrison, and Jagger , you were one of the most gifted, sensual, sexy, gifted, and talented Musicians that I had ever seen. Your music will live forever, we miss you daily, we love you forever. I am sorry Michael that you were in pain and that they didn't care, you were selfless and didn't want to let your mates down, but in the end it cost you everything, even your life.
Many Thanks to Richard for explaining some of the facts surrounding Michael’s death. It’s been 22 years and people are still posting comments about how MH died due to Autoerotic asphyxiation after the Australian Coroner had ruled it a suicide, and explained that he’s seen hundreds of cases and this case was not Autoerotic asphyxiation. I just wish they’d focus more on appreciating his music & talent more than the hearsea. Saw the documentary and it was really quite good! Many things were explained and it gave you a more personal view on Micheal’s life. 👏🏼👏🏼👍
Thank you so much Richard, love the music video collaborations that you produced with Michael during his INXS and MaxQ days. Your humility is abundantly evident, yet you are a giant...Michael would be well pleased with this documentary. Miss him desperately, don't we all.
Lowenstein was a true friend of M.H. and treats his legacy with due respect. He also politely sought the blessing of M.H.s long suffering daughter before releasing it.
He was so severely depressed. I recall that just a month before he took his life, Duran Duran wrote that horrible song "Michael you have a lot to answer for" and did interviews saying that they thought he shouldn't be with Paula. (Later they would try to say it was a fan song then years later say it was bout drug use - literally nothing in the song is about drugs!). The song has the horrible line "stop trying to be.." and was released on October 14th. According to the coroner research, Michael was back at a therapist on October 17th and had to renew his prozac. It was probably one of the driving factors, along with all the other media hatred toward him, that made him and Paula decide to try a move to Australia.
This mans life Michael is just going to grow like Elvis Presley and so it should he was a giant in the music industry and they didn’t even realise but the people did
Jim your documentary was the best! So detailed and honest material. You made me fall in love with Michael all over again. I thank you so much. You're a true stand up individual! 5 stars
Exactly to the week I sat in Thornbury Picture House to see this and thankful for the algorithm to show this interview to me now. 21/07/2019 more of this and our Aussie Pub to Club icons need humanising. Or maybe have I just been watching too much of this corner of the internet where everyone is human?
Saw the movie a few days ago and was a bit disappointed. There were some photos that have never before been seen but slot do the video footage is available on RUclips already. Some things were left out. For example how Michael was in Los Angeles prior to his death and jammed at the Viper Room among other things. No mention of Paula’s death either. Also would have been nice to see Helene and Kylie and others narrating actually speaking on camera. Just my opinion. Loved the Wembly performance movie - it was amazing and the audience in the theatre was up and dancing. Loved it!!!! People were even wearing their INXS t shirts too. It was awesome!!!
Amazing documentary and interview here. The one factor that fuels the salacious rumor is he was found nude. Why would he be in that state if just a suicide? Either way, what a shame!
Upon inspection of the hotel room, they found that the bathtub was filled with water: Michael either took a bath or was going to take it. That's why he was naked
Thanks for the interview; what a pity that he couldn't finish his idea when referring to MH's relationship to what had happened in Denmark. I would have really liked to hear his opinion on why MH minimized the event, or sugarcoated it, or asked his girlfriend not to tell anyone, etc. I really don't understand why he would do that.
Does anyone know? Maybe he didn't make any connection at first to the terrible issues he started having and that event. The saddest thing about his death is that it all seemed like a slow moving snowball. 5 or 6 years later, if finally took it's terrible toll. Knowing what we know about TBI now, he probably could have been helped. Maybe he just didn't realize it was actually something serious at first.
I can relate to what happened with Michael .My mother suffered a severe head injury from a car accident in 1988 she had the same issues of loosing taste and smell .They don't want to be treated differently than anyone else they don't want pity .My mother had severe mood swings and depression .She worried that if anyone found out what she was going through that people would try to take things away from her and treat her like she was less than .I was a teenager in my second year of high School when her accident happened and I much like Michaels girlfriend was sworn to keep it a secret which I have until now because she died last year at age 75.
If anyone should get license and money to tell his life in film, like with an actor, it's you. Then you think, who could play Michael? He was a one of a kind guy. An old soul, IMO.
I have purchased this DVD, but is it the same as ‘The Last Rockstar’ documentary on RUclips? Which i found to be wonderful! i miss Him incredibly so!!!!!
He was told to move. The taxi driver told him to move. Michael being the "dreamer" didn't gel to that. Tell the truth Richard. Obviously the only holes not in Michael's head are in this story. Yes, if Michael stopped touring and went full convalescent like a Brian Wilson or if needed a Syd Barrett he would still be alive today. But the truth be told Michael was to blame for his own downfall amongst a cast that pushed him as he jumped. It is a comedy of errors.
So if someone doesn't move aside you have a right to cold clock them? And drive away leaving them lying bleeding in the street? Here's hoping you don't work in criminal justice.
I've read all 5 or 6 books and I am so glad Richard decided to do it THIS way. NO ONE could PLAY Michael. The part that got me was Erin!!!!!!!! I knew from ALL the reading that Paula was engineering all the publicity etc etc from the get go and literally drove him to his death. She repeatedly tipped off the paprazzi but he wouldn't hear a fucking word against her!!!!Thank god he had some peace with Erin in the end.
Awful comment. After the scandal of the News of the World a lot of people began realising that maybe Paula Yates and Michael had their phone tapped. If he was loyal to his woman, even against the world, good for him, great Michael.
Looking back at it all, Paula did not look around and really pay attention to what was going on around them. And drugs and alcohol were not Michael Hutchence friend.
If his frontal lobe was injured, that would be reason enough that he would forget his own lines for his music (as he was accused of) ...RIP MICHAEL HUTCHENSE 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻
The best measure of a true friend is the loyalty exhibited long after someone has died and unable to defend themselves. I love your description "utterly peerless". I agree. The man is an anomaly. I adore him. Such a beautiful artist.

Miniseries with 4 hours? I WANT!!
So thankful Richard is setting the record straight!
Andrea Jones absolutely
I saw it in the theater. I could have watched another hour. It was brilliant!
Make the doco series...release it as a DVD for us fans- we can sit for 4 hours and more....Please!
LITERALLY. I will sit for 4 hours, not even LYING 🤣 Or stuff more into the special features!
Henrietta Stathopoulos ... Me too

I feel the same way minus jagger. The rest have impacted me greatly my whole life. Good to know some shares the same appreciation for these poets.

Please, give us the 4 hour cut! I would watch 24 hours.
Blessing to you Richard. Amazing documentary.

Thank you for sharing
This documentary was absolutely fantastic! I saw it twice at the cinemas.
He was so severely depressed. Thank you for making this!
I’ve got tickets to see it in January 2020 in VA and cannot wait!!!
The love you put in the film ... Thank you!
It would be good to release another album if INXS agrees. With all proceeds going to Tiger Lilly. I would buy it.
Jim your documentary was the best! So detailed and honest material. You made me fall in love with Michael all over again. I thank you so much. You're a true stand up individual! 5 stars
Hey Debra. Much as I'd like to take credit for Mystify, it's Richard Lowenstein who made the documentary. I just did the interview. 🙂
Congratulations!
how can we urge Lowenstein to in fact make a 4-hour docuseries?!?
I agree with thiiiis.
I look forward a possibility to watch the film. Thank you so much Richard!

A lovely interview.
Amei o filme …Richard foi um amigo fiel de Michael ! Gostaria de ver a versão estendida …mostrou muito do verdadeiro artista! 👏👏👏
Lowenstein ... a name you can trust.
Great interview.
Thank You 🐨
I would absolutely watch a four hour documentary.
