It HAS to be a bit at this point. I swear, all the horror game developers come together once a year to discuss how they're going to sneak rubber ducks into their games to torture Davis.
I mean, either that or they all have very specific duck trauma making them fear rubber ducks. My first guess was art installation, like they all had the same prompt and ran with it. The quality of many of these are like weekend projects; good but quickly published, with little to no funding. This felt like the right length for a scary game indie dev challenge featuring rubber duckies. I even wondered if there wasn't a programming instructor who watches SGS and had their students publish a game at the end of the semester (featuring a rubber duck for extra credit). Many games give the player a 'comfort' object that later betrays them, but the ducks are too specific to be coincidence.
i recently played a puzzle-escape room type game on mobile, and as it started to turn creepy, guess what was there too? a freaking rubber duck! i laughed SO hard xD
" Audio transcriptions are a big part of my job so.." "This is not going to be good, this is not going to be easy" "I have the smallest ears" I love you guys so much
It immediately calls to mind sitting in a tiny box with headphones on and clicking a little button when I hear a tone. But did I hear the tone? Who knows?
The audio transcripts part took me back to hearing excercises in english class. It was fun to hear you guys go at it cause you got a lot of things that I was completely cluelesss on. However, the "Please, have mercy! Kill me" line was clear as day to me for some reason, kinda interesting you struggled on that one. Great video again! These ones where you gotta get involved yourself and not just play a game are cool :)
Maybe it's just me, but I find the sight of a rubber duck soothing. I have a large rubber duck that I got off Amazon that I squeeze before I leave for work every night to prepare for a long night shift.
You're playing the last game first (but I can see why, since you apparently thought the title was "Entry Exam", so it would make sense to assume it's the first game). It goes "O'Brien State Park", "Crisis at Call Center", and *then* this one.
12:00 this whole Threat / No Threat is actually a quite interesting human experiment, and a testament to how incredibly well weve evolved threat detection over millions of years to be able to instantly judge a whole situation or even other entities potential actions, in a single still frame. It's also a distinction between actual threat, and imagined percieved threat, which is why one of you fellas felt it was subjective that some empty rooms ought to be threats. Thats why some horror games DONT work on some of us, if you're not imagining hypothetical threats when seeing an objectively empty neutral level, most of those new indie horror games are pointless (since they literally have no AI chasing you and no actual gameplay per say besides walkin around a scary environment). I'd say this test was spot on, it dealt entirely with ACTUAL objective threats, not what you feel is eerie or spoopy. An empty room is not a threat, period. It's all in your head, at that point. Brilliant game.
i feel like, it depends how high or low the bar of "threat" is. a forest? yeah man, that Is a *potential* threat. there's bears in there, man! an empty room? yeah, but what if there's someone or something behind a door? some dudes in clown masks and trench coats? meh, probably just Halloween, give em some candy. but im with you on what the game wants, spooky dudes you can literally see right in front of you? more threat potential. an empty forest, empty room, empty street, are NOT OBJECTIVE threats. but it does make you wonder, why is it so empty? im digressing again, that's where it becomes subjective. point is, it's making me think and i don't like it >:(
Darkness, unknowns and potentially compromised security are ALL threats that your brain DOES register. Imagine coming home and finding your door unlocked, but the lights are off so you can't immediately see if anything's different inside and you certainly don't see any "threats", are no alarm bells going off? Those indie games work on a similar level. You know about game chase sequences, you know they're possible, their current absence is not evidence for them not occurring. Thus the game remains scary. There is no objectively neutral level without spoiling yourself on game content which is identical to looking up jumpscares beforehand and wondering why the movie got a lot less tense.
"It's also a distinction between actual threat, and imagined percieved threat, which is why one of you fellas felt it was subjective that some empty rooms ought to be threats." No one thought that empty rooms ought to be a threat. Alex mistakenly thought that Davis picked the Threat option on some empty rooms, which he (Alex) thought was the wrong thing to do. 13:27
Loving more SGS! Hoping you guys do a full run of Indika, I ended up playing it for myself after Jesse played the demo and ADORED IT, so thanks for that!
29:30 the craziest thing is I had this same reaction, I felt my heart stop but I didn't react at all, it was like the threat identification part of my brain reacted independently of the "this is just a silly fella" matrix contained within my noggin.
I guess it makes sense though - it's always going to pronounce words in a precise, known way, so the listening algorithm is going to produce consistent results with the audio.
im hearing, "you really thought Robert would have killed himself?" like, this is Friend A talking to Friend B after finding out Friend C(Robert) is dead, everyone and their mother is assuming it was self-inflicted, but Friend A ain't having none of it. Friend A saw some shit. watch the real answer be something super innocuous and we're just hearing these things because we're looking for it. our brains are wild, man.
I love that Jesse was like "we may not know much but we can identify skinwalkers" and one of the questions they failed in the previous quiz was how you can tell the dog was a skinwalker.
One good thing about having only three people on the squad instead of four is that they are twice as likely to all be able to get together to make a video compared to four people. With four, there is a 6.25% chance that every member is available at any given time. With three, it is 12.5%. Which means we have the potential to get double the SGS content. That isn't factoring in other things like total production time and such.
Honestly, with what seems like a dramatic increase in videos since becoming three people, I'm going to go ahead and say that the percentages are skewed per person, and that jirard was likely the one who was busy far more then the others.
@@Vrikrar Right before all the stuff with Jirard came out, Jesse had a video talking about the changes to optimize the channel and he had said that since SGS is one of the mainstays that draws consistent attention but it was so difficult to plan days that all four people could meet up, they were going to set up scheduled SGS days at regular intervals and whoever can make it makes it and whoever is busy just sits out that video. He had mentioned that, as you suspected, Jirard was frequently the busiest of them, besides Jesse himself.
@@FidgetThePepperTheGhost I mean that is true, but has there been a single episode since the jirard stuff where any of the other three were absent? Even a single duo episode?
While Jirard might have been the most busy, the math shows that if we give all four of them equal probability to be available, it does double the likelihood of them all being available going from 4 to 3. It seems like we are getting roughly double the videos. Therefore, it is most likely this is just a case of probability. Once we start getting more than double is when we can look to other reasons.
