The Finnish soprano surprises with an excitingly dark version of the classic Christmas hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” today which, with its intensive mood, grand orchestra sound and electronic programming, sets the tone for a very special Christmas.
The official video is set in a gloomy, dreamy surrounding and gives a deeper insight into the album’s visual world - introducing Tarja’s dark and light character.

Music like this is reserved for very few people who appreciate it.
No matter if you like Tarja's solo material or not, you should respect her. Among all the others solo metal female singers she is the most hardworking one. Metal/rock albums, classic albums, music video, concerts - she is never idle!

I disagree that she is the hardest working one. I don’t think that’s for us to say. We’ll never know how much each artist truly works. Personally, I think her singing is declining. She is a lyric soprano, not a dramatic, and she is pushing her voice too far with her metal. She’s developed a wobble (stylistic or not, it’s not pleasing, to my ears at least). I love her timbre, and the harmonics in her voice, but she really needs to refine her technique because if she keeps singing with a backwards placement, not only will her wobble worsen, she’s also going to get an even darker tone. Everyone always claims she’s the best singer in the genre, but her technique is very flawed, now more than ever. In the beginning, when she was just singing classically, that wasn’t the case. It wasn’t until Nightwish’s new sound that this happens. Even so, I will continue to listen her music. I just hope she doesn’t continue to overdue it, or at least finds a more versatile approach to the genre.
Karina Zaripova, I definitely don’t hate her. I love a lot of her new songs as well, I just think her placement could be more forward and I’m a little concerned that it’s not. I love “Deliverance” and “I Walk Alone” especially. Again, it’s just her placement and wobble that bother me, not her as a singer. She set the stage for the genre, there’s no denying that.
Hubert Joseph, Jr. Listen to her classical performances. She is still really good and it doesn't seem like her Metal career has damaged her voice.
Marcus Abrahamson, I have listened to her classical singing. She had a wobble, especially on her high notes - look at her performance of Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro” from Gianni Schicchi. On her highs, (Ab5) there is a significant wobble. I am not bashing her, nor saying she is a bad singer, just sayin her technique isn’t as perfect as everyone says. And Her metal singing HAS damaged her voice, as it has darkened SIGNIFICANTLY; she sounds more like a dramatic than a lyric in most of the things she sings. Her pieces such as these are beautiful because of her proper placement; however, you cannot deny that her tone is darker than it used to be. It’s only been, like, ten years! Normally singers can go upwards of thirty without that problem, let alone a wobble.

In the last few years this has become my favorite Christmas album and I could listen to it year round. It's actually more accurately Christmas than almost any other Christmas album I've heard.
Last year (2020) was a rough year for many of us. For most of that year I struggled with a really horrible attitude toward the world, for many reasons, mostly because of what I consider to be corruption and abuse of the people by their government (I'm non-partisan, just FYI). So I had a very grim view of the world and of the future. When October came around I started listening to Christmas music almost exclusively until February 2021, in particular this one. I listened to this song, O Come O Come Emmanuel the most. I would listen to it over and over because I actually believe in Christmas (not the holiday, but what Christmas is supposed to be) and it gave me hope that this world may be very dark and corrupt but that Light has come, and will return again to put down the darkness and corruption forever.
I think this album gives more authentic feeling and understanding of Christmas than any other, reminding the mystery, seriousness and deepness of this event
@@vlakrunncompletely agree! as a christian, I think Tarja's renditions of the old Christmas hymns really depicts the depth, glory and beauty of the long-awaited coming of Jesus Christ, who appeared in both humility and power. Her voice is what I imagine those heavenly choirs of angels would have sounded like on that first Christmas night.

It's interesting that at the same time Tarja does not position herself as an active Christian, so here is the case of well working intuition

@@timomastosalo This album has become one of my favorite Christmas albums. I noticed that at least half of the songs are very Christ-oriented, not just fun party oriented songs like Jingle Bells or Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer. Not that those songs are bad, just that they're fun holiday songs, but not Christ-mas songs. But whether it was a conscious decision or it just worked out that way, Tarja chose to focus on Christ as the object of the holiday. That includes "Amazing Grace" which is not what we typically think of as a Christmas song, but in context of what the holiday is about, it makes perfect sense.

She's long been a Southern hemisphere woman, now in spain, but here in Finland it's actually very touching to think about light shining in the darkness in the deepest darkness of winter, especially when it now often happens without snow to bring at least a little light.

The one voice who goes straight to your heart and make you feel things that was deep buried.
It is a uncanny rendition, very candid and pure usage of her voice, not particularly found of this piece until she covered it. The melancholy and actually a bit of menace (in the way she looks) and eeriness are Tarja to the bone. I am expecting a lot from this album, the makeup, hair and clothing are superb, I have been loving the cover art and the very heavy makeup work ... I think that is actually the idea, that very very pale character that resembles a thing from another dimension, you look at the way it moves like a puppet and you know something is not quite right. The video is a bit underwhelming, it is mostly a photographic session but it hints at something really fun that Tarja has been exploring since what lies beneath. The dark side of the moon.
