    One thing that makes it stronger is when you put the line through the loop, you don’t put it all the way through, then you put the line though the other loop you made

    Pass it through the eye twice then after wrapping the tag end around the main line pass it through both loops, wet the knot and tighten. This give a stronger more dependable knot and unlike the improved clinch knot your tag end will be lying flat facing the hook/lure not the main line where it can and will snag.

    I used to use this knot for attaching hooks to hooklengths, while sea fishing here in the UK as its a nice slim knot. Downside to it is that the tag-end sticks out at 90deg, and splits lugworm and ragworms. I found that a uni knot worked better being as the tag end faces back up the line away from the hook.
    Much stronger too👍

    They done a strength test of this knot with the new fishing lines on the market today and it actually showed it don’t matter whether you live or or not it’s the same strength. With the older lines we used it was a major deal to live the knot but with todays advanced lines it’s not a must. Go back through the loop at the top of the knot and cinch it down for a really stout knot. That little tid bit will be necessary for some smaller diameter lines they make today as well as this knot doesn’t hold without going back through the top loop on a few I’ve found.

      My basic rule of thumb for basic or improved is if I'm using 10# (maybe 12# depending on water conditions) test or more I'm using the improved. Anything less than 10# test I'm not expecting to be catching monsters that are going to break my knot. For me they usually throw my hook 99 times out of 100 for every knot break on the basic on anything under 10# test. I'm not a saltwater fisherman so I'd consider 60# test a rope. 🤣🤣🤣 I'll stick to my lakes and rivers with my 4-12# test range. Maaaaaybe 14# if I'm going after real big Stripers running hard. I like a good challenge.

    • @tonymiller8244
      @tonymiller8244 8 месяцев назад

      @@Mind_of_a_Very_Strange_Man hey man each their own lol. I usually run 60-80lbs braid on my main rigs (definitely saltwater and definitely overkill but I get tired of losing rigs to those 60lbs skates and 5' sharks. Remeber, no kill like overkill!)
      As for my mono I will use mono on a few reels I keep for gigging and I use those for freshwater bass, salt flounder/sheepshead/trout. I usually keep it rigged with 20lbs mono. Used to tie the improved but switch to basic and I dont think I've ever had a slip. I will admit I usually leave a slightly longer tag line that may allow the knot to really cinch up with big head jerks.

      @@josephquinn7356 an improved clinch is better if you tie it perfectly, but it's easier to get a clean basic clinch. A clean basic > a bad improved. In reality, neither should be an impediment to catching fish. If you're regularly breaking knots it's most likely a technique issue rather than what knot was chosen.

    Minimum of 5 loops or it will pull. For thicker line less is actually better. Thicker line is harder to make the knot really tight if there are too many loops . I sometimes purposely do only 3 loops when im bottom fishing because if it gets snagged all you gotta do is pull hard and the knot will slip. Leaves more line and you just cut the curly end off.

    Actually there are three ways to tie it
    Double the line before going through the eye of the hook & make your twists & loops with the line doubled then lubricate & sinch it down tight
    Trim the double tag end st the bottom of the knot then the single end from the top
    This is the strongest way to tie it & will hold 100% in a break test
    The line will break in the main line every time & not in the know when stress tested
    Double clench knot

    That will slip out every single time you have to go back through the other loop

    This line will slip if you use it on braid. As many here have said, use the 'Trilene knot' version where you take the tag end back through the loop ahead of the eye of the hook. With braid, you should go through the eye of the hook twice as well, helps it to not slip.

      For sure 100%

      Using braid you're better off with a Palomar knot.

    Go through the eye twice and its a trilene knot! Way stronger as you have 2 loops around your eye.

    And it's called a clinch knot and it will slide through itself with enough pressure but if you throw a half hitch in it at the end it will not

  • @tmoripper6142
    @tmoripper6142 9 месяцев назад +1

    Its the old clinch knot. Going back through the loop you create before going through the loop by the eye is the improved clinch. Theres a good video from Gerad Swindle advising not to waste time cutting the tag end because of they don't care about feet of line going down to the hook, then why care about the half inch of tag.

    I tie this knot but the difference is that I tie a couple over hand knots right on top of each other on where the tag end is and when I since this knot down it sinches down right on top of the overhand knots. I’ve never had a fish break it. I’ve pulled straightened hooks even but the knot has never been an issue.

    That bad boy will slip on you real quick. Improved clinch knot is WAY better. I only use the regular clinch on 4# test or lighter when fly fishing. Doesnt slip and the improved clinch breaks half the time when you cinch it on such light line

    Im so tired of people in comments making claims about things they dont understand. Clinch, inproved clinch, palomar, all have their time and place and use. Claiming palomar is the best raises the question of why stop there? Why no use a jam knot which is basically a 2 strand clinch? Which gives 0 stretch and more abrasion resistance?

    Its call a clinch knot for those who are wondering and and improved clinch know when you put the tag end through the other loop you created. Then theres double clinch and improved double clinch. Thats when you start with your line folded over so its doubled up. Even stronger 💪

    If u put the line through the hook eye hole twice then put the line back through both loops. If u do it right ive had my poles break before my line or my hook straightened. People dont realize most of the time its there knot breaking or comming undone not the line breaking

    Also I’ve noticed that this not tends to break off at the hook and not in the middle of the line. If you get hung up and have to break it off you leave less line behind.
