    A good product and service is a good product and service regardless of the parent company. If one of the competitors stepped up and offered a better product and service id jump ship. Until then ill take a kindle and Unlimited.

      That’s an important factor I didn’t discuss. Also bring back out of print works not available in physical copy.

    The Kindle changed my life. I've had one Kindle or another since 2009. I am disabled and usually use a walker or a wheelchair. I sometimes find it cumbersome to deal with heavier books (I bought a copy of Truman by David McCullough years ago, but I didn't read until I was able to download an e-copy on my Kindle and I'm running out of space for actual books) I also like the idea of having a whole library with me. I still have plenty of physical books because there are always British titles that I want that are not available on Kindle.
    I also liked listening to this because I'm from Maryland and any time I visited my mother after I moved away from home, we would visit Crown Books.

      I rarely talk about the benefits of Kindle to people with disabilities but it should be mentioned more. As I have grown older, I’m preferring larger text though I’m still able to read print books though I wear reading glasses when the text is small. Who know what the future may hold so I’m glad the Kindle will be there if need ever arises

      Ditto for the ability of aging eyes to make texts larger. That is probably the best reason to have a e-reader. With that in mind, I wonder how it would be to read an e-book with something like and Apple Vision Pro. Imagine a book a foot long with huge text. Or, to go really crazy, imagine having a book open next to the movie version and being able to compare in real time…or do the same with a copy of, say, “Much Ado About Nothing.” The possibilities…

      I once hold the cheapest Kobo device on a clearance sale when Borders was going out of business. I got what I paid for, I suppose, and only used it once or twice. Now that new color Kobo looks really nice. 😁

    Excellent points, Greg. I have been a Kobo user for many years and that is what I am used to and prefer. That being said, I have a Kindle Basic which I use occasionally for books I can't find elsewhere. In Canada, the Kobo works seamlessly with my library but I understand it's slightly more complicated with the Kindle. Both are excellent and it really boils down to personal preference.

    • @anotherbibliophilereads
      @anotherbibliophilereads  2 месяца назад

      As I understand it, there are some kind of restrictions using library books for Kindle in Canada and the UK. Kobo might be the better choice there.

    I used to shop at those two bookstores in North Bethesda often. Both the Crown Books store, and the Borders Books when it was on Rockville Pike and later when it moved to the White Flint Mall. So our paths might have crossed way back then.

      @anotherbibliophilereads  2 месяца назад +1

      Probably so. I worked in those bookstore eight or nine years. I had moved on by the time Borders moved to the White Flint location. It is amazing to think how busy the old Borders got during prime hours. That store was packed.

    A footnote, for here & the CriminOlly episode, if you have a no-ads Kindle, even though there are ads on the Home page, you can set your Kindle to start in Library, so that also seems minor to me. Me, I spread the love around: just as back in the day I sometimes shopped in Borders sometimes in B&N, I have multiple apps, Kindle, Nook, etc. - not sure I'd recommended it, it's a [sic] bookkeeping problem, but it's cheap if you have an iPad or similar device.

    • @anotherbibliophilereads
      @anotherbibliophilereads  2 месяца назад

      I also set my Kindle to library mode so rarely see the home page. I do have Nook and Kobo accounts with maybe a dozen books but I haven’t used them in many years.

    Generally, a well thought ought response. One pushback: don’t assume Amazon wouldn’t make major text changes via the update functionality, especially for “controversial” material. Winston Smith’s job would be incredibly easy in the ebook world. And I suspect the Chinese equivalent of Kindle books is already subject to such “corrections.” The biggest advantage to physical books is that you’re assured the text won’t change. In today’s world, I fear we can’t say the same for ebooks (and I speak as someone with several thousand Kindle books and no desire to get rid of them).

    • @anotherbibliophilereads
      @anotherbibliophilereads  2 месяца назад

      I do think it would be a major policy change for Amazon to push updates for controversial material automatically. Technically, they have the ability, of course, but it’s not a practical threat yet. I can’t live based on possible fears of what they may do in the future. If Amazon ever did, they would lose me as customer.

    As for the DRM...If Amazon discovers that you have removed the DRM from Kindle books, they can basically take away all of your ebooks (that still have the DRM, of course) from your account and block you from purchasing any more in the future. Now, can they discover if you've removed the DRM? That I don't know, but I do know that there are documented consequences for it.

    I’m going back to parchment copies hand-reproduced by scribe! Actually - this is not my fight. I have the Kindle app on my tablet, but I’ve fallen away from buying ebooks but will use it for library downloads. Not that I’m against buying them.
