Another Bibliophile Reads
США
Добавлен 3 май 2021
Welcome to my channel. I’m a bibliophile who wants to talk about books. I like print, digital, and audiobooks. It’s going to be a mixed bag of books and topics because I’m a broad reader, rarely focusing on one category or genre for any length of time. There should be a healthy mix of literature, genre, and non-fiction.

Nice progress!
Doing brilliantly Greg and some great books there 😊
One of these days, if you ever have the time, please consider doing a video on your go-to source for audiobooks and, if possible, what you think is the best deal. Glad to see you're getting more into Borges. Cheers.
@@unstopitable I have been pondering an audiobook video .
I first read Stoner four years ago, in the middle of the COVID pandemic (when I was 20). It felt like the perfect book for that time-quiet, reflective, and oddly comforting. Since then, I’ve reread it 3 times and each time, I appreciate even more how it finds meaning in the small, everyday moments. I’m a new subscriber and recently discovered your channel. I’m really looking forward to watching more of your videos and getting some great recommendations for my next read ❤️🩹
I think William’s novel Butcher’s Crossing is a better book in some respects, but it’s much darker and grimmer and bloody towards animals.
@ will be adding that to my list. Thank you!
_Killin'_ it! 🎉
Well I managed to finish 21 books this past week. Only one was long the rest just easy paper backs. It is great to clean off some of my shelves !!!
21 in a week? 😮 Even if they were easy that is what I do in a month.
Yes, it’s time to read Night. I just borrowed from hoopla as the wait list on Libby is many weeks.
Glad to see Pip earning his salary. Pip doesn’t appear to have hate in his heart, but I would suspect a bit of mischievousness. Chekhov’s plays? You can keep’em - but his stories? Mmm mmm. I didn’t much like Borges when young. Time for a revisit? You read a lot of interesting stuff - even if no corkers.
It's always a treat to see Pip. Night is an extremely powerful book. I reread it a few years ago and I found it to be more powerful than when I first read it in high school.
Must get to Borges 😢
@@allenmahan9393 I’m always on the look out for used copies of Borges for you, but no dice.
Me too, I have the same books Greg has. Might have to wait until January
@@anotherbibliophilereads Thx! 😊
I don't know if you've read his essays, but Borges is more insightful and fascinating about a work like The Divine Comedy, Hawthorne, Don Quixote, than most critics. He had an incredible memory. After he was blind he continued to write and lecture on Kafka, Arabian Nights, Divine Comedy....He would dictate lines to friends and those who visited him and ask them to write it down and re-read it back to him. Remarkable man.
@@LibroParadiso-ep4zt I have the three volumes of Borges in English: Fiction, Essays, and Poetry.
Making great progress!
You have a lot of creepy books here, Greg. You made me laugh out loud when you were describing one of these horror books and said, "This is not for the easily offended.....(PAUSE)...I'm going to give it a shot." Of course you are! I do like those Hard Case Crime books. You're going to have this challenge done in no time at all.
@@BookChatWithPat8668 I’m on track to finish in 20 to 25 weeks. I do enjoy books that stretch towards “ not for the easily offended” material.
@@anotherbibliophilereads I know you do. I just thought your delivery after the pause was just brilliant! Hope you’re doing well, my friend!
You're too kind, Greg. Seriously, though, don't worry about reading it; it's just the first book in a series and ends on a hard cliff hanger. You might actually get a more satisfying read out of my post-apocalyptic Lovecraftian zombie novella--half the size, and oozing over with a lot more gore, violence and unspeakable acts of transgression. Someone made a video review about; I didn't ask him to, he just did it. The novella is called The Mouth of Hell. It packs quite a punch. Here's the review: ruclips.net/video/EtFfcAkZ_Ak/видео.html Unlike Creepy Me, which is set in Virginia, The Mouth of Hell takes places in NY (in Manhattan) where I once lived. Cheers, and thank you for even letting me take up space on your Kindle. --Will.
@@unstopitable That was a good review. I put The Mouth of Hell on a list for later when I’m done with the RWYOC. I also noted you’re listed as the translator for The Underdogs. I read last year. I attempted the Spanish, but just couldn’t hack my with through and read the public domain translation. I still give Creepy Me a try.
@@anotherbibliophilereads Greg, it is so kind of you even to read anything of mine; you don't have to make a review, but I would like your opinion, if privately; I only hope you won't think negatively of me after reading it--it's pretty intense. As for The Underdogs, I did my own translation because I was so unhappy with the available ones. No one commissioned me, and if I were still teaching, I would use my own for class. Gustavo Pellón's translation is also pretty good. Waisman's, though, is sterile. I love westerns; parts of The Underdogs read, at least to me, like one. Anyway, cheers.
I love the snowflake challenge! As I work towards the 100 I can earn snowflakes along the way ❄️❄️❄️
I have found Babel in my library donations for $2.00 hardcover , I plan to read it in December. Also Frisk by Dennis Cooper is a book I been wanting to read since I started RUclips.
@@badrad9226 Possible buddy reads.
@ it’s always a possibility.
You've got some great books to pick from. The Man From St. Petersburg sounds like one I'd like to check out.
"gonna get some"'😂🤣😅 You have some interesting books to read. I've thought about reading Babel but I'm going to wait for your review. ✌️📚
That’s a ton of pages in a week! And an iron will! They love challenging us with sales! There was a book sale at my library yesterday. I convinced myself it was just the remnants I picked over last month or I wouldn’t have made it 😅😅 hope you knock the challenge out before the temptations get too strong! 😊
I haven't encounter a library sale yet. There are sometimes great deals.
@ oh they are dangerous! $.50 paperbacks and $1 hardbacks. I brought home two tote bags full last time I went 😅
Thanks for the snowflake level!
Sounds really fun! I’ve not read Lovecraft in a long time.
I hope you join us on Discord or Voxer.
Any comics or graphic novels that you get directly from the Kindle store have individual panel view, which you can enable by double tapping the center of the the screen.
Thanks for the info. My test graphic novel was from the library.
@@anotherbibliophilereads Did you try the panel-to-panel view on the test graphic novel? I think it would still work. Then just double tap again to exit panel view
@ I have not tried it. I returned the graphic novel to the library. I will give it a shot if I check out another.
OMG... Can somebody PLEASE tell me, HOW is it possible someone who has this many books pronounces nuclear like "NUKE-YOU-LER"?!? MAKE IT STOP
The Wolf Den trilogy is excellent. I really enjoyed it. Was it the Brothers Gwynne on BT you saw? It was their enthusiasm for the series that made me pick it up.
That might be the channel. I think it was a top 10 list of something like that.
I just stick with the book
@@torres870rem If that works for you go for it.
You’re storming through those books 😊
Great wrap up, Greg and congrats on resisting the NYRB sale. These things are not easy to resist! I was thinking about trying the audio for In the Night for Cliff's book club too. The premise sounds good and I love the father/daughter aspect. Wow, Buddhist concepts within Stephen King is very interesting, I'll have to check out that channel! The Long Walk is definitely on my list for some day. Love seeing Teddy on his walk - my daughter has been asking to get a cat harness and leash for ours so she can talk them for walks, so I might have to put that on the Christmas list, lol. :D
@@bookstalgic To be fair, not all cats take to walking on a leash, some freak out. They don’t walk like dogs either. Most of the time Teddy is still, watching and waiting what’s in the grass or trees beyond. But give it a try.
@@anotherbibliophilereads Yes, you're right. I think one of ours wouldn't like it very much :P
I still have memories about The Long Walk; and I read it when I was around 13, close to the age of the kids, and was engrossed by it. Didn't you do a review of the Repairman Jack books? Cheers.
I have mentioned The Tomb earlier this year. It’s my favorite of the Adversary Cycle.
SPOILER ?: I loved The Long Walk. I wonder if Stephen King saw it as young men being drafted or signing up in the army and going to war, etc., that they have to go on, trying hard not to get shot at. That's the image I get.
I never connected the Long Walk with Vietnam until I saw it in Reading From the Depths .
@anotherbibliophilereads I don't know about that. I'll have to look it up. Thanks!
Thanks for bringing Reading from the Depths to my attention - I subscribed to follow this new series. I haven't read The Long Walk yet but have it on my TBR so can enjoy that during the Read What You Own Challenge.
The Long Walk is awesome. Reading From the Depths is a profound channel.
@@anotherbibliophilereads I haven't read any of the Bachman Books (have the version with Rage) but have planned to read Running Man on New Year's Day as it takes place in 2025. I hope to complete the 4 books by the end of 2025
That’s a hefty amount of pages!
This might be my favorite book of all time and I'm due for a reread! My preferred translation is the Constance Garnett one but it should be lovely either way!
@@SeaninsShelf Welcome! Is there a reason you prefer the Garnett? Most other translators aren’t kind towards her.
@anotherbibliophilereads I know some native Russian speakers have a problem with hers for making it more Victorian -esque at the expense of his crass Russian edge. I think that in many ways a lot of the translations have their mishaps, but I also appreciate the more dated language that she used. The most popular today seems to be Pavear/Volokhonsky but I didn't really like that one as much. She also was the first to translate into English many Russian works so it makes sense that a lot of people after her would have something to say about hers. It was also the first translation I used so that might be influencing my opinion as it was her translations that I was reading when I fell in love with his writing. What is your preferred translation?
@ I think it was David Marshank but I’m not sure. It was a mass market paperback. When I worked at Borders in the 90s there was a Russian coworker who ranted against Garnett.
I don't think I'm quite ready for a re-read, but it's a great novel. Hope you all enjoy the group read. I will be reading "The Idiot" in the near future -- the only major Dostoevsky work I haven't tackled yet. Have a good one!
I read The Idiot a few years ago. It’s different from C&P and BK.
Thanks Greg! I’m glad to contribute some pages to your read what you own project.😀 I wonder if the author of The Hunger Games read TheLong Walk.
I would bet a doughnut she read it and didn’t learn a thing about good storytelling in the process. Thanks Brian
Nightworld creeped me out just hearing about it!
Thanks for the shout out! Here's hoping the series works in practice as well as it works in my head... The Adversary series sounds really interesting and I hadn't heard of it before. Looking into it, though, wow, it gets confusing... He originally wrote a trilogy, but then another trilogy which should be read interspersed with the original trilogy... then he wrote an additional 16 novels that mostly take place after book 3, though some of them after book 4 and some of them after book 5, and re-wrote book 6 to accommodate all the new lore and whatnot that he had created in those 16 novels... What? I think the series sounds fun. I don't know about 23-novel fun, though. What do you suggest? Just the (semi-) original 6?
I’m planning on reviewing The Adversary Cycle this week or next. It has a convoluted and interesting history . Best place to start is the beginning with The Keep.
@@anotherbibliophilereads I look forward to it! The crazy map of the books I saw on Reddit suggested that whether reading just the original six or the whole 23 you should still start with The Keep, then Reborn, and then The Tomb. It is after that point that things get a little wonky... Regardless, I have my own read what you own challenge going on, and while mine is more "inspired by" than "following the rules of," it still means this series will be down the ways a bit.
I'm impressed you resisted the NYRB book sale. You're doing great with the challenge.
They usually have another sale around June. I’ll be done by then.
I love the kitty interlude! Hee hee! Another great week crushing pages!
Thanks so much!
One day I hope to record Teddy interacting with a neighbor’s dog. Teddy is teasing and having a blast and the dog isn’t sure what’s happening.
This is great Greg! There are still so many Lovecraft stories I still need to read.
Last year it took me to June to reach the bronze tier!😀 Now there are only 7 books on my shelf so I will not be taking part in the challenge (but read those seven books).
I could honestly have enough to do the 1000 Book Challenge.
I really liked the first of the 5 Warrior Angels books.
The Forgetting Moon was indeed great. Two surprises at the end.
Good luck. I hope the elder ones don't notice your curiosity!
