...I remember a scene in FFVIII where Seifer was torturing Squall over what SeeD is planning against the sorceress Edea. One option was to tell the truth and say you don't know anything. The other... was to come up with that hilarious lie about planting flowers around the whole world as a demoralizing tactic in war...

It's actually a direct reference to the torture scene in FFVIII. If you have Squall lie, he mentions how filling the world with flowers causes people to lose the will to fight" -- pretty much like he says in this game.
It's like Squall forgot that Rinoa exists.

I know, right? She probably does exist in this game since Snow directly mentions Serah in a side-quest with Shivalry.
Cloud also directly implies that his story takes place after his journey in FFVII. So, it's like all of the FF stories take place _after_ their respective games, but FFVIII's story takes place _before_ . That's the only explanation for why the existence of all VIII characters, save for Squall and Quistis, is ignored. I mean, neither Seifer nor Zell are mentioned and Squall and Quistis would already be familiar with them.
It's a bit weird. I can't make sense of it.

Except that her life as a member of Deepground is practically identical to Squall's life as a member of SeeDs. SeeDs and Deepground are both genetically enhanced super soldiers created for the sole purpose of fighting their nations' enemies.

If you have him lie during the torture scene in FFVIII, his dialogue is very much like it is here. That's where the reference came from -- as well as him being a SeeD. Seeds = flowers.
But yeah, it does kind of sound like a rip-off of Firion. They probably could have taken this scene a different route there.
Nor Firion nor Squall care about flowers. In FF2, Wild Rose was a code word for the rebellion that Firion was apart of in which he became a prominent figure. That was a Dissidia thing only, Maria would laugh at him if she heard that, lol.
In FF8, when Squall is being interrogated, they ask what Balamb Garden's purpose is. There's a troll response you can choose ''to plant flowers over the world'', and the promise to Rinoa in the flower field (although I don't doubt in the slightest if she opens a flower shop, he would attend it sometimes haha).
If Squall actually cared about flowers, no one could take him seriously, lol. But yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a reference to the torture segment in FFVIII. However, it's an optional dialogue, so many probably missed it for that reason.
As for Firion: guilty. I keep forgetting about that -- but that's mainly due to not having gotten very far into FFII.
I find it funny how Squall still has that scar across his face even in a cute little Chibi Form! I bet people can still recognize who Squall is even with the scar, Square probably left it on him for....... reasons.
There's actually a story for why he has that scar in WoFF. Though it's a reference to FFVIII, I hate how they altered it. -_-
I adore this game! The only thing that disappoints me is Zidane Tribals not in the game.
Wonder how Squalls Life would have been if he never met Rinoa, and his time during SEED ended (They get retired already at the age of 22 or 25 I believe).

They made Squall too emo on this, squall doesn't care about those things. He's antisocial yes, but he doesn't whine about his future, if anything he'll accept any challenge head on even if alone.

If someone asked him about his dream, he'd probably shrug and either say "Don't know. Honestly, don't care." (if you're going by the tough part of his personality), or "Stuff. And things. ...I guess..." (if you wanna go for the awkward/dorky part of his personality) ...or "(Whatever)" (if you feel like continuing a running gag)...
When he's being tortured in FFVIII, you can have Squall lie and he says something _very_ close to what he says in this scene regarding flowers and planting them. That's most likely the reference they were making. It, unfortunately, goes unnoticed because in FFVIII, it's optional dialogue -- and people are more familiar with Dissidia, where _Firion_ talked about filling the world with flowers.
SE really should make things more clear with their games.

Theyre destroying the badass side of Squall by making him say "fill the world with flowers" like Firion said, Christ, its like they were lacking story to write! If Rinoa was in the game, there would be plenty of reasons for him to keep fighting with all he got, for example (for those who played FF8) "If the world sees you as their enemy, I'll be your knight".
I LOVE that line, and scene! I hate that Rinoa gets left out so much. She is _the most_ important person in Squall's life.

He was kinda like this throughout the first half of FFVIII. Besides, this game likely takes place before FFVIII, since Quistis is still saying she wants to become an instructor and how Squall said he had no real purpose (we all know that changed when he met Rinoa).
