I must once again sing the praises of Timothy for making me a 22” custom skip lathed half flat ride. It’s got such a warm, magical tone, with supreme stick definition, and can get fairly loud but also can go quieter than any other cymbal I own. It’s also just fun to collaborate and have a small view into the crafting process. And I find there’s an additional bonus of creative inspiration that comes from playing a cymbal that was made for you. Thank you Timothy - please keep up the amazing work!
As you speak about the flats (and yes, Now he sings...is that quintessential sound), I am also reminded of the old A Zildjian line "the Minicup". The great Harold Jones plays on three of them and they're all sticky and crashable too. Why they stopped making that cymbal is beyond me, I knew a few drummers who absolutely coveted them. The sound they had was on a lot of recordings, think Wes Montgomery with Grady Tate on drums. Anyway very interesting work you're doing, I think it's awesome that you are crafting these.
The half flat is really cool! It reminds me a bit of the Paiste Sound Creation Mellow Ride, which has the tiniest bit of a bell. I grew up listening to Paul Wertico play with the Pat Metheny Group, so my ears gravitate towards heavier flat rides, like his Paiste 2002 Flatride, Sound Create Dark Flatride and Signature Flatride. They were all 22" and in the 2800-3000 gram range. They have a very special shimmery stick with a dark wash that you don't get from a lightweight flat ride. I have a 20" Zildjian K Custom Flat Top Ride that's around 2300 grams, and it has some of that shimmer too but with a little crashability.
Very nice. Being a fan of flat rides for many years, I’ve amassed a small army of them, both A’s and Early American K’s, 18”-22”. Many folks jokingly refer to flats as manhole covers. To me, playing a flat takes a slightly different tack than playing a “conventional” ride…it requires one to be more intentional with their sticking as they are much less forgiving and have absolutely no problem calling one out their technique, lol. Nice job sir.
The half flat feels really similar to the sabian signiture "jack dejohnette mini encore bell" ride! They don't make them anymore but they are amazing cymbals, glad there's something on past with it being made today🥲
I like both of those. Very musical and that's what we all want in a cymbal because they're, well, musical instruments. I have a K Con 20" flat that has a very similar quality and I have a 20" K Custom Lite Flat that's real fun to play. I have a couple small bell cymbals as well but they have nowhere near the character. One is an 80s A Zildjian Mini Cup. It's essentially a flat ride with some extra spread but it still has that ticky-tacky, all stick sound that some players like. It has it's place but I feel those kind of flats and the Mini Cup are a bit too one dimensional. My other small bell is a 22" old Canadian K that I bought that sounded really good in the drum shop where I bought it (Frank's in Chicago) but as time went on I started to not care for it as much in live playing. It has too much of a low frequency drone to it that ends up being a bit obnoxious after a while. I really like a thinner flat like the one in this vid and my K Con. The crashability is cool because it's controlled. And I've always dug cymbals with that "shimmy!" Love these! Maybe someday...
That’s a very cool collection! Yeah, I love the set up of these types of cymbals. They are very interesting and provide some unique sounds you can’t really get with any other kind of cymbal.
22'' flat bell,22'' flat ride....ok....send me one of each, and I'll let you know......Sounds good on my computer sound system.....Need a few gigs to know for sure.........................Ralph Onofrio..

Thank you so much Luke. It was a pleasure working with you! I really liked how that half flat turned out also!
Awesome cymbals and drums! I would love to see a video about the different anvils that you use.
Yeah, I’ll probably post a video about my shop sometime soon!
That flat ride is absolutely amazing! I usually dont prefer flat rides, but I'd definitely add one like that in my arsenal! Great work!!!
Thanks!

Thank you! Yeah I’ve come across quite a few mini cups over the years. They can sound nice!
such great playing every time!!
I've got an old 22" Sabian hh mini bell ride that i use all the time. It's great!
Fantastic content!

Yeah! Paul is one of my favorites too. His cymbal sounds are incredible.
Guess the mini bell one can be more versitile but man that flat ride rocks my world
Small bell!
AKA Mini cup or Mini bell ride
Yeah, however my Half Flat rides have a bell that’s much smaller than a standard “mini cup” ride. It’s usually about half the size.
I have a '60s Zil. Mini cup. Really sweet and dry.

the flat ride sounds amazing
Thank you!
Do you still any of these two for sale?
No, sorry. They both sold months ago. I can make another though!
prefer the flat. Beautiful cymbal

sometimes i feel half flat myself
haha! me too
I’m surprised I liked this flat more than the half flat
Yeah, it's a nice one! I like the crashability it has.
I am pretty sure this was a flat ride on this track - ruclips.net/video/6xckBwPdo1c/видео.html
Yeah that’s either a flat ride or a really heavy ping ride. My guess would be a ping ride, but I could be wrong!
