I like them for different reasons. The original would be so useful and versatile, I feel (as a non jazz guy). But the second version has so much character and is a lot of fun to listen to.
I love the sound of the final version. I haven’t personally been able to connect with paper thin rides but with your touch and those sticks it sounds phenomenal in the recording. Btw I was super interested in the discussion about sticks and how they affect cymbal sound. If you’re ever looking for topics for future videos, I bet a lot us would learn a lot from your thoughts on how stick variables elicit different sounds from the same cymbal. Thanks!
The modification helped a lot. It took out the hollow fundamental hum that was present. It seems that the mod took out some tension away, opened it up, and brighten the cymbal. Bravo, Tim! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Continually impressive work as always, Tim. Love this shit. The original was a lovely compliment to that 18”, and the modified version was super nice as well.
love it! Timothy does the best work, is so easy to work with and can make whatever your musical heart desires for your personally curated cymbal sounds
For my taste and use I like the modified version best, at least from hearing it “behind the drums”. Really nice cymbal. That Bop Memphis R&B stick is reminiscent of the Buddy Rich stick. In fact it is nearly identical to his stick unlike current models that bear his name.
Those sticks are replicas of Buddy’s 70’s Ludwig signature stick. It’s got a really long taper with an integrated tip that feels and sounds incredible on the cymbals. More people should know and buy Bopworks sticks. It’s basically a one man company out of Austin and I’m always afraid they’re going to go out of business and leave me without my favorite sticks. I buy a couple of boxes a year and have a massive stockpile just in case…
Their “Rhythm & Groovz” stick is a great stick for pop. It’s like a 2B in the grip, but also has an extremely long taper down to a barrel tip that generates sensitivity on the cymbals. So you have enough beef for punishing rim-shot backbeats but also delicate cymbal work.
Great point about the stick size! I started using a lighter stick-Vic Firths AJ6,to get a much lighter cymbal attack. The stick has endless rebound, great weight to it! BTW- I love that cymbal “After” the 300 grams were taken away. For some reason, any cymbal that’s over 2150 grams,no matter if it’s a 20/21/22 sounds like a piece of sheet metal to me;too high pitched, too gongy! That’s just my ears, but there are very few cymbals that sound good to me that are anywhere to close to 2300 grams. I have no current endorsement deals,so I have to pay a fortune (and I will)unless I get one used, that has that special slightly dark, sizzle. I drill some of my cymbals too with lightweight brass rivets,if needed.
Hell yes bopworks, those sticks are in a league all of their own, I started using the art blakey models about 6 months ago and they're the best sticks I've ever used.
I'm new to this channel. This is awesome. Why would this man share all this knowledge with nothing in return? It is pretty obvious; This man is in love. He loves his trade so much that he can't keep it to himself. Thank you for sharing sir.
I love the depth and silences between the lower and higher frequencies. The mid tones are still there but more mysterious than mid tones usually are. I’m proud to say I got my first TR cymbal. I’ve been keeping my out for something here in Australia. It’s a 20 inch 1720 g labyrinth September 2021. So yeah, light. Yes, light sticks give so much more control and broaden the application within a given musical spectrum There is a brashness that sold me on this cymbal. I have a great sense of there being ong explorative hours ahead with this cymbal.
What would you have done differently if you started with the same blank but had the modified cymbal in mind and not the original tributary series cymbal?
Great question! I probably wouldn't have done all that much different. However, the final result was a bit different than it would've been due to how I shaved most of the weight off the bottom during the mod. I wanted to keep the top, patinated surface relatively unaffected. This gave the cymbal a more loose, wobbly feel which was exactly what the customer wanted.
the 'after' is the cymbal I've been looking for my entire life. god damn it
I can make another one!
Timothy is a master and can make whatever you ears desire
@@ReverieDrumCo would love to know how much

Yes, that's on my list of topics to cover!
The result sounds amazing, every cafe drummers dream. One of your best

You're the man, Dom!
What a beautiful cymbal. I liked the mod even better.
final version is dope!
knocked it outta the park !! Love the final version. Interesting sticks as well - was unaware of this brand

What you did is absolutely incredible, thats a terrific cymbal Tim !
Great video Tim! I prefer the original version, but I think you did great with what the customer wanted!
Like the mod better than the original. Awesome

Yeah those are great too!
It's impressive the way you matched the new cymbal sound with the old 18" one. About the cymbal you crafted, I can't say witch version is better.
Sweet cymbal!

Thank you! Glad you dig it!
The last sound bite was a much more enjoyable sound
I love the transformation ! I wonder what you could do to a Paiste 20 ride I have !
We could find out!
Wonderful instrument! Maybe big band before modification and small group after?
Both versions sound great. The heavier one would probably be more my speed personally though
I don't do paper thin, but compared to my heavy hitter counterparts I go through less cymbals cuz I went to use medium thin/ thin

I am not a jazz player but I think the original one sounded much nicer than the paper thin mod
What an art to absolutely appreciate. Uncanny the resemblance in tone. 💪🫵
I really like both versions of this cymbal…. before and after modifications
