Hey, mate. It's pronounced "Tah-kah-oh". The company is pronounced "Ah-oh-shi-mah". A gorgeous kit to be sure, of a beautiful ship! The brown rectangular thing you see on the side at the stern is an auxiliary rudder. If the ship's normal rudder is jammed by battle damage, then the auxiliary rudder can be released astern, attached by cables. It drags behind the ship at some distance, and can then be pulled to one angle or the other by the cables, thus acting to steer the ship either to port or starboard. A clever idea! And the main deck, as usual with Japanese cruisers and destroyers, is covered with the usual brown linoleum (with brass divider strips) instead of teak wood planking. I'm looking forward to building this one as soon as I can get to it. To me, these were the most handsome looking heavy cruisers in the IJN.

Very nice review Jason, been looking at this class of cruiser by Aoshima and found there are some really nice supplemental photoetch kits for this and others in its class, some even have the sagged cable style deck railings - as always thanks for sharing

Very nice kit. Takao had torpedo blisters added later on so the fact that they moulded on separately is huge plus. This class of ships were very top heavy so the blisters were added primarily for stability. Great vid, Jason.

In terms of research and reference, you could do no worse then getting a copy of "the anatomy of the ship: the heavy cruiser Takao". 250 pages covering every possible details of the ship and its various refits and such. I picked up a second hand copy in a bookshop nearly 25 years ago. Based on your review of the kit, I am definitely putting this one of my wishlist!

Very thorough review of a very hefty kit. I wonder how it would look next to your Mogami.

Hi Jason, Great First Impression as as always. This looks like a great kit. I just took a look at Ebay and there are at least 5 listed any where from $127 to $170. Have a great day. Jeff

Good review of an impressive kit. I got mine in 2014. It had no p.e. but did come with white metal special purpose sub. Unfortunately the instructions are Japanese with 1 page English ref.only. So I got the Lion Roar p.e. kit for it. This is great because it included everything. But they mixed up the frets! Instead of 1 c & 2 d, they regretably gave me 2 c & 1 d !!! Oh well. The resin turrets are not posable either. If you plan on doing the late camo scheme, the best reference book is the super drawings in 3d by Kagero . Great book for reference. Thanks for sharing and I hope you have as mutch fun with it as I will. Cheers!

Hi, Thanks a lot for this video, Jason. I try to find this kit but the black box with PE parts and other items is missing in recent kits . So, may I know where you purchase your kit (Web or local shop., address??). Thanks for your help. Eric from France
