Considering the fact that Japan never really had the full squad in the last year or so, especially in defense, I am confident enough to say that we are absolutely the team to beat even without our full squad. And I don’t know why so much hate for Zion. He is THE best keeper in Asia by far. Look at his stats in Serie A. Name me another keeper on this continent that can do that in top 5 leagues? He did poorly in Asian cup but the man is only 22 and was 21 in the Asian cup. Keepers are like wine., they get better with age.

The negative gearing defensively and lack of attack seems trash in Asia but when applied to a global standard you get a team that can overperform against the likes of Denmark, Peru etc. as seen in the last cycle. Even within that, your point about the decent wins forgets we thrashed Indonesia 4-0 in the round of 16 at the Asian Cup. You are right in that Tony Popovic (who btw plays historically a very determined defensive style capable of turning the counter deadly) does need to re-jig things, but he will be better at getting goals on the board as seen against China, and no matter how scrappy that seems ultimately it is by design. For last 3 world cup qualifiers until the current one south Korea and Iran were always in the same group and Iran always toped the group with south Korea in second. Iran either beat South Korea in Iran and Draw in Seoul(except that 1-0 in Korea with that historical finish by Ghoochannejhad ). Korea has won one game against Iran in past 10 years and that was when Iran had the coaching crisis. Korea either lost or draw Iran in recent years So either you are too young to remember this or just not following football. By the way i remember the 6-2 game with Ali Daei playing.
