hello! can you help me to connect the garmin to tacx training app? i want to ride some custom gps routes from that app and I can't find how to connect the app...the trainer is connected to garmin but what should I do?
Well call me an idiot. All these years I've had the 830 and a Tacx Neo I did not know I could be recording those rides done on the trainer to add to my total tally of rides and miles in RWGPS. I just saw this video today, sorry I don't follow, because I don't use subscription apps and I thought that's all you was about. Thanks for the details and you earned a like from me.
SMART Bike Trainers, yes, I used my Garmin 530 with my Wahoo Kickr SNAP. I either go off of Erg mode or manually adjust to simulate courses I have ridden because the courses ridden option coupled with the SNAP does not replicate my numbers out on the actual course. Great content, Sir!
Great vid as always. Another vote to see how you can re create an outdoor route indoors using a Garmin. We have Kickrs 2018's and Garmin 1000/1030. Thank you for everything you do!
thx for sharing:) although your video is already 2+ years old it helps to compensate the leak of Garmins basic information inside the box of a newly bought tacx
Great video! Is there a way to switch between ERG and free-mode during the workout? Typically for a workout mixing interval blocks with VO2 max sprints.
So far as I can tell, no. I ended up *disconnecting* my head unit from my trainer, and setting the trainer into resistance mode (where it obviously stays for the entire w/o). Would be great if you could program resistance mode for each step through the head unit...
Cool video! Yes, I'm interested in seeing other ways to ride a course on an indoor trainer AND preferably paired to a video that was also shot from the course. win win... not boring. :)
Which is the one big company that does not display/record cadence?? I bought a tacx bike trainer, and I'm busy trying to set it up. Great video, very useful. Thanks Tariq 🙏
Hey. Great video; thank you. Yesterday, I did my 1st kickr and Garmin edge 530 ride and noticed a gear ratio setting. Fo you know how to determine the number?
Great video, I struggled to pair my Edge with a Saris trainer - ends up i did not press the add sensor button to complete the pairing!! Thank you for your help
Hi Tariq, I have been trying to figure out a way to get my trainer to simulate my saved courses on my Garmin 1030. I plan to use your method and hope it works as I haven't been able to make it simulate my course difficulty in the past. You said you had some ideas on how to make it better and I would love if you made an update video on this topic if you can. Thanks for the great content.
I really want to See a Video whats your way to Re ride a course. I tried my house Route in my edge 520 and Yeah it sucks. Want to ride some Tour de France Mountains on my edge. I only use the garmin for recovery Workout otherwise i use zwift, rgt etc.
Question 1: If I pair Rotor 2InPower as Power meter and Kickr as Trainer simultaneously to my Edge 520 Plus and follow TP workout, does Edge do “power match” automatically in the background? i.e. reading power from my Rotor and adjust ERG on Kickr. Question 2: There are 2 ways to start the TP workout, one from calendar or my workouts, and one from Indoor Trainer Mode. Are there differences in terms of workout execution and experience depending on where you start the workout? Question 3: Kickr has ERG speed simulation you can set up in Wahoo app, does that “simulated” speed data gets broadcasted to Edge during workout?
Great video! Keen to see you do the video on a Garmin Edge (i have an 820) using outdoor routes inside connected to a smart trainer. Looking at using this to train for an Ironman that will be held in another state. Thanks in advance
Nice video, thanks! I'm trying to do this with my Garmin Fenix 5X, but can't seem to find the indoor trainer connection screen. Do you know if the Fenix has smart trainer (i.e. Kickr) control/connect function?
Can the head unit take power readings from a power meter (power pedals) and use that number to manipulate erg mode in the trainer?

Hi, I may have missed it on the video but is it possible to download/ sync recent outdoor rides for simulated indoor workouts similar to garmin? Is it also possible to control a trainer via erg mode? Thanks!
With a lot of better technology advances in watches do you think it's still worth getting an Edge? For example my 745 can pair with the smart trainer and control resistance power etc from my watch. Appreciate it!
Hi, Many thanks for the video. I have a Wahoo Kickr and a pair of Vector 2. How do I make a workout using erg mode and record cycling dynamics? What I want is the trainer to make the resistance and read the speed, while the pedals read cadence and power (L/R balance). Is that possible?
Hello, in case of folow a workout in TP, is possible to disable EGR mode? in this case, increase resistense to be on power interval, jus like if i train in the road. thanks
just purchased the wahoo kickr core for mtb and wanted to know if you would ever use your garmen in conjunction with zwift of other third party apps? thank for the informative vid.
Sometimes I do just to be able to display more data such as NP and AP for each lap. Also, I use my Garmin to record power from other power meter devices when testing power meters. Other than that, I just rely on Zwift or TR or whatever app I’m using to capture all my data.
I note this is a few years old… do you think the ‘follow a route’ function is better now?! Am going to give it a go so gf and I can ride same routes in pain cave!
I paired my garmin edge 830 with a kickr and started the FTP test on the edge unit as mentioned in the video. The warm start with the kickr at a low resistance. Then when the first power zone interval began the kickr resistance started to increase and carried on increasing taking the power way above the power zone for that interval. I tried restarted the test 3 times and the same thing happened. Have you any idea why this happening?
I am thinking about buying a Wahoo Kickr and my bike computer is a Garmin Edge 520 Plus but I am not sure if I can ride routes from my Edge on the Kickr? Do I have to use routes from a Wahoo Element etc. to do that?
Will the kickr climb sync and simulate gradient on a pre planned komoot route synced to my wahoo trainer via a garmin head unit or does the climb only simulate gradient when used with a app such as swift? (I dnt use swift)
How can i use my garmin device and in parallel a SW like Zwift? But i want to record my workout with my garmin device, otherwise the workout does not count for the garmin challenges.
Great video Tariq, as always. I have the Garmin Edge 1030 Plus and have set up my training data screens the same as in your video. My question is specific to the StagesBike SB20. I have not been successful in having the Garmin drive a workout on my StagesBike. I have connected it as my ANT+ trainer, and I go into workouts and choose a workout. Can you confirm either directly or via your network whether my SB20 should follow a workout coming from my 1030P?
Hmm… that’s strange. The bike uses both ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth FTMS controllable trainer profiles so your Garmin shouldn’t have an issue controlling it. Have you tried manually changing the resistance using your Garmin?
Hi Tariq. Love your videos. After using Zwift for the last 3 years, I'm trying out some different options for indoor training. A couple of years ago I tried using my Garmin 520+ with the option to re-ride a course and found that the gradient just didn't work very well. It's been a couple of years since I last tried, so about time to give it another go. I was wondering if you have seen any improvements to Garmin's indoor features since you did this video?
Very pertinent question. I share your curiosity. After all, was this video made by our noble broadcaster? He raised the possibility of doing so. It would be excellent to train efficiently on the courses we usually do.
Great vid Tariq, many thanks ! Do you have any idea why my Flux 2 isn't following the power as per the workout that is on my Edge 830 and isn't showing any power figure at all, just 0 ? Thanks a lot for responding !
I have tried to re-ride courses indoors using my Edge to control the trainer (Tacx Neo), but as you mention it is not very good. Also, I find the transitions between grades extremely harsh (very different from actual ride). If you have a better way to do this I would love to hear it for winter training and rainy days.
When doing a TrainingPeaks workout, how do you toggle between ERG and slope mode, going back and forth for different parts of the workout? Is it just setting it to grade and target power?
You can use some Garmin watches to control your smart trainer. I would just pair the trainer directly to the watch and let it control the trainer. Pair your trainer to Zwift as power and cadence only and leave out the “Controllable”.
Does the resistance mode work with planned workout? I don’t want to use erg for intervals. It seems even if I switch to resistance, it switches back to erg at the beginning of each interval, which is royally annoying.
Hi Tariq, do you know if there is the possibility that the Garmin Edge 130 plus, will show cycling dinamycs and other metrics like NP, etc... someday? - Thank you
Hi Tariq, helpfull video. Thanks for everything. I Have a question for you. I have started to use my edge 830 with tacx flux s on a route that I wish to train myself for the spring rides. It works fine and it saves to Strava as well. The question is: the route map and climb values do not show in Strava. Is there a way to do it ? Thanks in Advance David Maden
Hi, I'm hoping you can help or guide me. I use the edge explore 2 and I've been able to pair it to my Saris m2 and load a gpx file course to follow. The problem I have is the ascent profile doesn't change from +1 or +2 when I'm doing a hill climb. And i've tested it on hills that have a 6 or higher % grade. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? or is this a limitation of the garmin? Thank you in advance for any help. Ren
Nice video! Is there a way to do a workout from TrainingPeaks on my edge 820 and smart trainer with erg mode off? It’s very easy on Zwift (just turn the erg button off) but can’t find a way to do that on my garmin edge 820... I would appreciate some help here. Thanks
Not really. The only way that I know off is by not loading a workout and do it on resistance mode. If you load a workout it will set to erg mode automatically.
@@SmartBikeTrainers thanks so much. So if you enter the indoor mode and choose to do a structure training you can't turn on and off ERG during the session. Right?
You can switch to resistance or grade mode if you press the menu button but as soon as you transition to the next interval, it will switch you back to erg mode.
Hi, Thank you for your videos!! 😊 I have an issue when I want to do one custom training : after one minute, the power of the Tacx neo2T drop down; I have to push on the - or + target power, then it's good again ...for one minute 😪 . And sometime, when I push on - or +, the Edge switch from power target to 100% HT RES, and the same issue every minute... I've try With my edge 1030 and 1030plus, same problem. Garmin help seems ton have no solution. Some idea? Best regards. Pierre
Good morning. I recently started training following a Garmin Coach plan. I paired my Edge 540 to my Elite Direto but compared to Zwift, the resistance feels strangely high. For instance I just did a base training of 2 hours @145 watts, which should be easy for me but it felt like I was pushing at least 190 watts instead. Matter of fact I had to switch to the small plate and the smallest gear! Am I doing something wrong? I calibrated just before starting and the gearing felt normal but the moment I clicked on play to start the workout the resistance turned extremely hard
Make sure your trainer is only controlled by either Zwift or your Garmin head unit. Otherwise you will experience resistance fluctuating as both try to control the trainer.
@ thanks for the answer. I was only using my Garmin Edge unit, didn’t run Zwift. Thing is resistance seemed higher than it should be. I’ll keep investigating, it’s only my 3rd indoor training with the Garmin head unit, normally I only use Zwift. I would’ve preferred to do the Garmin coah workouts directly on Zwift but apparently this is not possible. I know you can import the workouts in Zwift but if I understood correctly they won’t count for the training plan. Thanks a lot in any case for your answer. Greetings from Belgium
So today i really thought i had it all figured out, but no. i cannot get my 530 Edge to adjust the resistance automatically on my Saris Hammer3, like it does when using Zwift. I have connected it as an indoor trainer, with the help of your vid above, but was so disappointed to see it does not automatically adjust the resistance. i created a workout in Garmin connect with Primary target set to a specific hr Zone and secondary target as a power zone. every step then has its own Primary and secondary target. Although the 530 displayed the power, the resistance field showed a 0% trainer resistance value. Do i have to adjust this manually with every step then.....
Hmm… I wonder if it has something to do with the way you setup the workout in Garmin. You might want to try setting the primary target to be your power instead of hr. See if that works.
Hello I have a question: I connect my Edge 830 as you said as Smart Trainer with my Tacx Neo. If I start a Target Power training it works more or less (not really accurate to the set power) and somehow alle 3-5 mins it increase the power for just a second for a huge amount and after this second everything is normal again. Do you know of this problem? Its really annoying because it breaks your cadence rhythm so much :( and I don't know how to fix it
Can i connect Neo 2t to Zwift and than to edge 530 as a trainer or if connected to Zwift I need to connect it as speed/cadence/power sensors to the edge?
You should be able to connect it as a trainer. But the only issue with that, your Edge might try to control your trainer and might present some issues for you. Best to connect it as a power meter and speed/cadence sensor.
I am using Zwift training with synchronized Garmin 530, but the speed and gradient that Garmin displays are not from Zwift. Is there a way to synchronize those readings?
You will need to load the Zwift course onto garmin and ride it alongside Zwift. But then the speed will be off because of the difference in algorithm between the two. So you really can’t do it and have both be synced.
Hi there, have a new 1030 and trying to connect with a Wahoo Kicker. Have tried endless number of times to get the speed and distance to show up. Cadence does but not speed and distance. Any ideas?
Why does Garmin show a range of power (to avoid writing power ranger) and not the prescribed workout power? Will garmin still track the target power in ERG mode or is it up to us to match the power?
Unfortunately there is no target power field to display in Garmin but It will keep you at your target power. So if you prescribe workout target for the interval is 200 watts, the Edge will work to keep you there. Just keep your cadence smooth and consistent.
+Dennis Manalo I should have my Wahoo Element Roam review out soon but overall, Wahoo GPS Element or Element Bolt offer a much better indoor training experience and smart trainer control.
Hi if I have a basic indoor trainer that doesn’t record any statistics will I be able to record my distance by using a garmin speed sensor 2 and garmin edge 130, if I connect these 2 devices will they work on a basic indoor trainer
Question: I have Garmin Edge 1000! And a Elite Drivo smart trainer! I use Zwift and also via Zoom, doña class with my cycling coach. How to the resistance of Zwift and / or Garmin work? Can Indo my Zoom cycling class as background, and do the Zoom class using Garmin???
So are you looking to do the zoom class with your coach and adjust the resistance manually? You can do that if you pair your Drivo as a trainer to your edge and then use level or resistance mode to adjust resistance. Hope that helps.
SMART Bike Trainers - Well zoom class is boring since I just see the group and hear the instructions! My idea is to do Zwift up on a flat route and at the same time have Zoom in a small window in the background! But Zoom class needs the Garmin resistance of the indoor trainer. So will it make sense if I unpair the trainer from zoom and only have other sensors paired with Zwift?
May I ask, after complete the course (re-ride a route indoor). I tried to upload the recorded workout file to Strava. Will it show the route map on Strava activity?
@@SmartBikeTrainers I have tested Garmin Edge 520 last month, the uploaded Strava activity doesn't have the route map, although I set the activity as virtual ride, same as what you replied. The good news is, I found that Garmin Edge 130 Plus allows Strava show route map, just set is as virtual ride . The whole process, firstly, it is a new route created on Strava, import route GPX to Garmin Edge 130 Plus. After finish ride, save and upload automatically via Garmin Connect to Strava. It works perfectly. I am hyper excited and enjoying this feature. Time to say goodbye to RGT Magic Road, the best thing is no need to pay monthly subscription fees.
Hi, i have a tacx flux 2 and garmin egde 830, when use a wokout mode, the distance and velocity is low, example i go with 200 W and the velocity says 30 km/h. my weight = 63 kg, bike weight = 7 kg.
Hi. I can not change the resistance from my 530 to kickr..I set 80% for example, and still 0% sensation. But the climb % and the target work. I dont understand?
No reason other than I like how it looks. I find the Garmin stock mount to be a little bulky. I also have the k-edge and like it. I will probably go back to the k-edge because I can switch between the Element and Garmin and has the GoPro mount as well. KOM offers wahoo Elements attachments and GoPro as well, I just don’t have them.
@@SmartBikeTrainers what do you think of the SNAP so I don’t have to take off the wheel?? My wife and I are both going to use it and have two gearing systems
If that’s the case, the Snap is a good option and makes it easier to switch between bikes. Also, the Kickr ROLLR is another solid option if you have a power meter on your bike and wife’s bike. Super easy to switch bikes.
I semi always , since don't regularly use 530 indoors , forget that it doesn't matter what you do with the menu buttons if you don't pick INDOOR out of profile with top right button you will not be able to re ride a route ...!!! one day ill be able to remember how to avoid it wanting to send you back to start on an outdoor course , if you leave it by it 50 cm
@@SmartBikeTrainers That would be really interesting. AFAIK wahoo does power matching within the trainer. This would enable users of Tacx etc. to do the same and have consistent PWR workouts/logs of their training

Thanks in Advance
David Maden
Unfortunately not that I know off. Garmin will send the data as an indoor ride without a map or elevation to Strava.
@@SmartBikeTrainers thanks for the quick reply
"if you're looking for something really boring....then give this a try". I dropped my phone while laughing. Lol. Good video, thanks
Could this be used to replace the Joule 3.0 to control the Cycleops 400 pro bike?
very useful
Hi, I'm hoping you can help or guide me. I use the edge explore 2 and I've been able to pair it to my Saris m2 and load a gpx file course to follow. The problem I have is the ascent profile doesn't change from +1 or +2 when I'm doing a hill climb. And i've tested it on hills that have a 6 or higher % grade. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? or is this a limitation of the garmin? Thank you in advance for any help. Ren
my kicker can simualte de watts of the training in erg mode , and my power source can be my Vectors ?
Thanks 👍
pls do a vid on the alternatives
Any guidance on how to turn off ERG Mode when having my Training Peaks structured workout being uploaded to my 1030 and paired with my trainer?
You need to use resistance or level mode if you don’t want erg mode to be active.
@@SmartBikeTrainers this is great advice and very much appreciated.
Hi, Thank you for your videos!! 😊
I have an issue when I want to do one custom training :
after one minute, the power of the Tacx neo2T drop down; I have to push on the - or + target power, then it's good again ...for one minute 😪 . And sometime, when I push on - or +, the Edge switch from power target to 100% HT RES, and the same issue every minute...
I've try With my edge 1030 and 1030plus, same problem.
Garmin help seems ton have no solution.
Some idea?
Best regards.
Pierre
Are you following a workout that your unit downloaded?
@@SmartBikeTrainers
Yes, it's a custom workout that I've written on Garmin connect and synchronised on my Edge 1030/1030plus
Hey, can i pair my 530 with the elite qubo power mag smart trainer? (Not the digital)
Smart b+? If it broadcasts in ant+ then you should be able to pair it but it won’t be interactive.
Lol! 2:43 If you are looking for something really boring then give this a try 😆
Hi, is it possible to connect my pedals to Zwift,& use my smart trainer on my Garmin 830 for dual power recording?
Yes, I do that all the time when testing trainers. I usually connect the my trainer to Zwift and pedals to garmin to record both powers.
Is ist able to control the trainer with an edge explore device?
I would also like to know
I am using Zwift training with synchronized Garmin 530, but the speed and gradient that Garmin displays are not from Zwift.
Any ideas?
Did you pair it as a trainer?
Why does Garmin show a range of power (to avoid writing power ranger) and not the prescribed workout power? Will garmin still track the target power in ERG mode or is it up to us to match the power?
Unfortunately there is no target power field to display in Garmin but It will keep you at your target power. So if you prescribe workout target for the interval is 200 watts, the Edge will work to keep you there. Just keep your cadence smooth and consistent.
Have you had any chance to try indoor training with the wahoo gps? Which brand provides the best overall experience for indoor training?
+Dennis Manalo I should have my Wahoo Element Roam review out soon but overall, Wahoo GPS Element or Element Bolt offer a much better indoor training experience and smart trainer control.
SMART Bike Trainers can’t wait for the video tariq. Keep up the good work!
Does it work with the latest garmin edge explore? Or can you only use the sensors?
+BJ Van Staey I don’t believe so. The Explore doesn’t have smart trainers support.
Hi if I have a basic indoor trainer that doesn’t record any statistics will I be able to record my distance by using a garmin speed sensor 2 and garmin edge 130, if I connect these 2 devices will they work on a basic indoor trainer
Yes, your speed sensor should connect to your garmin and send wheel speed data and your garmin should be able to record it.
@@SmartBikeTrainers thanks a million mate that really helps 🙌
How about grade? 2 peecent on Edge feels more diffocult than Level 2 on wahoo app
May I ask, after complete the course (re-ride a route indoor). I tried to upload the recorded workout file to Strava. Will it show the route map on Strava activity?
It will upload as an indoor ride without the route
My Garmin 530 won’t pair with my kinetic road trainer 2. I have the kinetic app . Will this interfere with my Garmin pairing with my smart trainer?
Hi, i have a tacx flux 2 and garmin egde 830, when use a wokout mode, the distance and velocity is low, example i go with 200 W and the velocity says 30 km/h. my weight = 63 kg, bike weight = 7 kg.
Hi. I can not change the resistance from my 530 to kickr..I set 80% for example, and still 0% sensation. But the climb % and the target work. I dont understand?
This working with all trainer ? I have wahoo kickr and see a power, but any two side communication not working:/
Quick side question: Which mount is that for your Edge 530? That doesn't look stock. Thanks!
That's the KOM Garmin mount: amzn.to/2XyAdl9
@@SmartBikeTrainers Just curious why you use this mount vs. stock? I've also been pointed towards the K Edge mounts. Thoughts? and thanks in advance!
For some reason my Wahoo sensors won't connect and tried on my Edge 530 & 520 Plus any ideas ?
Which trainer did you use in the video and what do you think is good for someone starting out!
Good question. It was either Wahoo kickr or tacx Neo or possibly both 🤔
I would say the Kickr Core is a safe choice for someone starting out.
@@SmartBikeTrainers what do you think of the SNAP so
I don’t have to take off the wheel?? My wife and I are both going to use it and have two gearing systems
If that’s the case, the Snap is a good option and makes it easier to switch between bikes. Also, the Kickr ROLLR is another solid option if you have a power meter on your bike and wife’s bike. Super easy to switch bikes.
Does Garmin edge 530 work the same way as you explained for saris m2 smart trainer?
Yes, it should work with the M2
Con garmin edge 130 se puede hacer? Y garmin f 920xt?
I semi always , since don't regularly use 530 indoors , forget that it doesn't matter what you do with the menu buttons if you don't pick INDOOR out of profile with top right button you will not be able to re ride a route ...!!!
one day ill be able to remember how to avoid it wanting to send you back to start on an outdoor course , if you leave it by it 50 cm
Can the 530/830 power match if you pair a smart trainer and power meter?
If you have a power meter then yes. I had plans on testing it further to see how well it works but didn’t have a chance yet. On the to do list.
@@SmartBikeTrainers That would be really interesting. AFAIK wahoo does power matching within the trainer. This would enable users of Tacx etc. to do the same and have consistent PWR workouts/logs of their training
