Thanks for the review! Was an easy choice when my old 520 went on the fritz and wouldn’t even take the latest software update let alone store some new courses. Have had my 830 for a few weeks and love it!
1) I have the edge 1000 but it's time to upgrade. Can you overlay data tabs on the navigation map screen like the edge can? 2) Be great if you did a features/function comparison chart between 530 and 830 and 1030? 3) Did Garmin say when they intend to put out their new top of the range device i.e. 1030 equivalent?
I have never used a bike computer previously. I have purchased the Garmin 830, but I cannot find one single video that simply provides a tutorial on a newbie actually using this in the field. I've seen setup videos. but yesterday I went to ride and I could not get it to actually record my navigation. thankfully I had my phone with the map my ride app that I have used for a long time. maybe you would consider making such a video or provide a link to one if it exists
Thanks for the review. I've got a couple questions about the 830 that weren't addressed. First, I noticed that a lot of the video in the review was shot in the shade. A lot of electronics that have colored screens, including cell phones are extremely difficult to see in the sunlight. So is the colored screen on the 830 easy to see in the sunlight? I understand the brightness of the screen is controllable, but in reality at its brightest setting, is it actually very good, or crappy like most electronics with colored screens? For instance, the Garmin 920XT at it's highest backlight setting is HORRIBLE for viewing the colored screen in the sunlight. Second question, does the 830 have the ability to show maps in a satellite view directly on the device, versus only the cartoon view? Thanks in advance for any feedback.
I love the 820, perfect size and great features... but we all know it had 2 major issues... that horrible screen and it was damn slow, brilliant to see Garmin fixing both, great review Ray as always
Mike Prytherch never had a problem with the screen on my 820 in two years and it’s certainly better than my previous 810. As far as processing speed, the 820 is a little sluggish but again, when I got it felt fast compared to my 810. Everything needs a speed bump!,
My experience is I liked the touchscreen of my 800 slightly more then the 820...it is usable however and I'm ok with it, but it seems far more responsive on the 830.
@@shred3005 The screen is like a lottery... some were not bad and some were terrible, but all were next to useless in the wet and with gloves on, the biggest issue with speed was panning and zooming in and out the maps, swiping between screens was OK, also route calculation is very slow for any long rides
Glad I bought the 830 over the 530 as the learning curve, for a first time user, is straight up a wall. I would be pressing buttons forever. It has every feature but underwater basket weaving metrics (soon to come) , and little documentation even in the online manual. Something as simple as going to the home screen required Google. Spoiler...you need to tap on a data screen.
I already own the Polar cadence and speed sensor which are both bluetooth sensors, did I understand it correctly that they should be compatible with the 830?
Hi there ! What about the new Garmin Hedge 1030 Plus that it just came up ... what would be the difference between the 830 ... beside the screen size...
I recently purchased a Garmin Edge 830 - first purchase of a Garmin product. My display seems blur, in particular the the large text/characters in the main menu with white background. Annoying, a bit uncomfortable but not dramatic. I don't know if this is a defect or if I am used to better screen in general (i.e. iPhone). Are you experiencing the same?
If my 800 Edge ever dies I like the looks of the 830. The self-locating feature is pretty slick. I consider my 800 Edge the best value I've ever spent on any Garmin product.
Yes I have an Edge 800 and I would agree. It is solid especially with all the upgrades to firmware over the years. The only reason I would like to upgrade to the 830 series is for better navigation and Di2 integration. Why is the 1030 not made in all black. The white is so ugly!
I like it .. i like it a lot 👍👍👍 had the 520 now for 4 years now.. I’m serious considering 830 or 530 upgrade.. glad I waited a while instead of going for a wahoo bolt .by the way, great review dc 👏👏👏👏
Some of them actually already started there. :) For example, MARQ has all the new training load stuff, including acclimation of heat/altitude, and even the Fenix 5 Plus has ClimbPro as well (and newer units too).
As always, excellent review, but my main concern with my Edge 820 is the intermittent (and very poor) connectivity with my iPhone 6 when I want to allow Live Track, to the point that I am contemplating buying another brand next time. Wonder if they have solved this issue which seem to be a reccuri g one.
Hi. I can't seem to find information about a following issue. I am thinking between the Wahoo Bolt V2 and Garmin 830. With the Wahoo it is all clear, since I have the V1. But I don't know if the following is possible with the Edge 830. Lets say I am navigating with a pre-loaded course onto 830. But half way through I decide to change the route, and need to get off the planned (course) track to get to one place. As I have read, I cannot upload new courses to 530/830 from a phone/app while an activity is in progress. But what if I select an address/POI or even a point on a map during an activity and selected course already? Will this work? Won't the current activity stop/end ?? Thnx
Is there a way I can upload a ride showing the correct gear as determined by the bike profile in the head unit? I have 2 road bikes and a track bike and all miles get loaded to whichever bike (gear) I have selected on the Garmin Connect account. If so I'll buy one.
Wow, this thing is pretty darn feature-packed. The jump air time notification/measurement is a pretty funny feature, but I kinda like the idea of it! haha And the trail fork notification and info is pretty neat as well.
What is going on @6:41 ? Is this data overlay on the map only available for these Grit and Flow metrics, or can this be used for all metrics? I have never seen this feature in Connect before, can someone help me out? Love all your in-depth but focused and concise reviews!
Haha. I’ll stick with the ultra-reliable Wahoo Bolt. Sure, it doesn’t have of these features (nor do I want them) but it WORKS! I have had many Garmin units and they all had issues! Reading through the comments obviously they still have many of those same issues.
Well, that's not what I read on Strava... Good luck on really long rides then :-) I use the 830 and don't even feel it. It's just there and working. Well, those Wahoo fans alway compare their units to the ancient Edge X20 generation. Time goes past, companies and products develop...

Question. Have an older Garmin 520. Interested in going with the 830. Will I need to replace the current speed/cadence sensors that the 520 uses? Not a big deal if yes but if older sensors are same they are still in good condition. And thanks for the excellent reviews and vlogs over the years. Very, very informative.

The Edge 520 Plus to Edge 530 transition is honestly pretty minimal. In that case you're mostly doing it for secondary features, rather than core mapping stuff (though, the Edge 530 is a heck of a lot faster in mapping than the Edge 520. The only real difference between the 530 and 830 is the touchscreen, so that's just a personal preference thing.
recently, i had left (didn't disconnect) my 2024 12 speed 105 di2 system connected with the garmin edge 830 and this resulted in draining the battery of 2024 12 speed 105 di2 system fully. This also drained the battery of the left lever. Have you experienced this type of phenomenon ? please advise... thanks!
Quality content as always! Btw, is the Garmin Edge Battery Charge Pack compatible with 3rd party mounts like K-Edge? Or am I locked with the box stock plastic Garmin mount?
DC, I ride enduro races dirt bike in the bush races and gps races in the bush too. Can you recommend the best in class for my sport? I use a Garmin Etrax 20x. Which is sufficient. I want one that we help me train etc too.
Great video never had a problem with 820 and this looks a great upgrade, was that the Marq Athlete on your wrist? Thought Garmin would have asked for it back by now.
New 830? Now I wish I had taken video of my 820's touch screen freaking out in the rain on Monday evening. I'd love to post a video showing the differences in touch screen between the old and new touch screens on my channel. In my opinion the 820 is bad enough to make users swear off touch screens forever.
Albeit not the ideal solution, I'd suggest a seldom used Garmin accessory to help w/ touchscreen issues. It's the Garmin Edge remote control. I have an Edge 1000 along with the remote control placed along side my right shifter. II don't find this location intrusive as my hand never interacts (hood hand placement) with the remote unless I access the remote. I've found it to be a vitally important safety device when used to change screens quickly (profile pg. - map screen when going over an ascent & starting a decent for example) & not needing to take my hands off the hoods. There's a programmable 'hot button" that you're able to set up. Regardless of the weather, it solves the problem of changing / viewing data screens. Another option would be utilized the programmable features (if you own it) of the button found in certain Di2 shifters. I've seen You Tube videos where this is an option with Di2 in the recent iterations. Hope this helps. buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/010-12094-10
DC Megaman - My issues is the rain or sweat changing screens and changing data metrics while I ride. I would love nothing more than to lock that touch screen. Seems like that would possible 🤔
@@mlegrand There were (2) software updates that Garmin released to address the Edge 820 touchscreen "sensitivity issues." - Ver. 5.10 to 5.20 (Improved Touchscreen performance & stability). - Ver 3.20 to 4.10 (Added Touch Sensitivity setting to improve touchscreen performance with gloves and in wet conditions) I've never come across the rain / sweat issue that you're experiencing. If you're unit already has these updates, you do always have the option of using your "lock screen option." - Press & hold the power button - Select Lock Screen. To unlock the screen, simply repeat that process & select "Unlock." Another idea might be to add a screen protector to your 820 device that may repel drops of rain / sweat & stop / minimize it from changing screen somewhat. www.amazon.com/MIHENCE-Protector-rounded-Premium-Tempered/dp/B076HMMCPB/ref=sr_1_4?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIuc-S0_764QIVTEsNCh30VwCpEAAYASAAEgIwxPD_BwE&hvadid=177323680976&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9003428&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=5826975354513779724&hvtargid=kwd-213886007325&hydadcr=17844_9820665&keywords=garmin+edge+820+screen+protector&qid=1556736314&s=gateway&sr=8-4 Hope this helps.
When I use the trainplan functionality and select find a course, the course start but I don't see my traingplan/workout screen anymore. You have an idea?
4:00 wait what? I don't see where people are riding? That is the first and main reason why I was planning to buy this thing, to tell me where I can find trails for my MTB. I don't give a duck if he will incorporate in a tour. I go to the trail do it a few times and back home. What the duck Garmin? Anyway, great video, really useful, saved me around 450 euros.
It shows up as a mass storage device in Windows. If it's not showing up as that, double-check your USB cable (if not using the Garmin one). The Garmin one is Data+Power, but a lot of random micro-USB cables you have around might only be power, so it won't show the data side.
I have garmin 810 and do not see any reason to drop 300+ euros on a new garmin. All I need Speed, Cadence, HR, navigation. 810 does have it. I would only get a new device if the price was 200 or less and if my garmin died.
I am in the same position, I am just wondering if device/ANT+/BT connection is better because I sometimes lose the connection during races :( It never happens during training but almost always during races like this time : www.nfkb0.com/2018/07/03/a-powermeter-mystery/
Hello DC. When I use Enduro 3 and Edge 840 can I track both in the same time my bicycle ride? What will happen then after save to Garmin Connect? I will have 2 records of the same ride in Connect or it makes some optimalisation and will do only one record? And its possible Edge show me the heart rate from enduro by riding? Thank you very much.
Does anyone know if there’s a way to place a flag in the ride? Say if you went really quickly on a run you could place a quick flag down so that when you get home you can see exactly where that run started.
i dont understand the point of providing the speed sensor with the head unit. whats the point? genuinely curious, more accurate? faster updating speed information?
It's mainly used by mountain bikers these days (and some on older indoor trainers). With mountain biking the trails are often hard for GPS to get accurate speed/distance, so a speed sensor is more absolute there.

great review as usual! do you know if the MTP features, especially the Trailforks will be available in the 1030 (probably a software update) ? thanks
recently, i had left (didn't disconnect) my 2024 12 speed 105 di2 system connected with the garmin edge 830 and this resulted in draining the battery of 2024 12 speed 105 di2 system fully.
Rec-Mounts makes a really nice series of compatible mounts.

on 530 is it possible to move ( pan and / or zoom ) the map with buttons?
S. It is possible. I found a review or a video where it shows that is possible to pan the map with buttons
Actually no. And why? The new touch screens works great for that.
DC, I ride enduro races dirt bike in the bush races and gps races in the bush too. Can you recommend the best in class for my sport?
I use a Garmin Etrax 20x. Which is sufficient. I want one that we help me train etc too.
I have a ege 1000,, is the 830 the best cycle computer out there for both road and mtb?

DC Megaman - My issues is the rain or sweat changing screens and changing data metrics while I ride. I would love nothing more than to lock that touch screen. Seems like that would possible 🤔
@@mlegrand There were (2) software updates that Garmin released to address the Edge 820 touchscreen "sensitivity issues."
- Ver. 5.10 to 5.20 (Improved Touchscreen performance & stability).
- Ver 3.20 to 4.10 (Added Touch Sensitivity setting to improve touchscreen performance with gloves and in wet conditions)
I've never come across the rain / sweat issue that you're experiencing. If you're unit already has these updates, you do always have the option of using your "lock screen option."
- Press & hold the power button
- Select Lock Screen.
To unlock the screen, simply repeat that process & select "Unlock."
Another idea might be to add a screen protector to your 820 device that may repel drops of rain / sweat & stop / minimize it from changing screen somewhat.

Hope this helps.
When I use the trainplan functionality and select find a course, the course start but I don't see my traingplan/workout screen anymore. You have an idea?
Hi, for mtb which is better the 530 or 830? How works the touchscreen with gloves? Thanks!
Hi DC... any idea if and how upload/replace base maps in 830? no microSD slot, and it is not recognized as external memory in Windows. ???
It shows up as a mass storage device in Windows. If it's not showing up as that, double-check your USB cable (if not using the Garmin one). The Garmin one is Data+Power, but a lot of random micro-USB cables you have around might only be power, so it won't show the data side.
@@Dcrainmaker You are absolutely right. I used wrong cable. With right one recognized as memory, w/ 6GB free out of 14,3 GB. Txs
Any idea when available?
More or less immediately. Likely start seeing them in shops next weekish.
Does this thing have a Speaker and tell you where to go just like a gps?
Real nice video, would you recommend the 820 over over the 530? Since the new 830 came out you can finde the 820 for 240€.
Does anyone know if there’s a way to place a flag in the ride? Say if you went really quickly on a run you could place a quick flag down so that when you get home you can see exactly where that run started.
Been watching your reviews for a while now... never noticed you were Dutch (or atleast Dutch speaking/reading) :)
i dont understand the point of providing the speed sensor with the head unit. whats the point? genuinely curious, more accurate? faster updating speed information?
It's mainly used by mountain bikers these days (and some on older indoor trainers). With mountain biking the trails are often hard for GPS to get accurate speed/distance, so a speed sensor is more absolute there.
@@Dcrainmaker that makes sense. thanks
How is it with winter gloves?
Nice review!
Great vid Ray. Do you know if they will be rolling out the new software features to the Edge 1030? Thx
Yes, everything but Trailforks data due to licensing issues.
@@Dcrainmaker What about those folks, like myself, that still cherish our Garmin Edge 1000s? Will these feature sets be passed on to these devices? Thanks for all that you do!
DC Rainmaker thx for the reply - good news. So we just wait for the update to drop. Any idea on timing?
is trailfork updated when new trails are build?
Now that's a good question, it should have some way to sync data, but maybe you have to dock it on a machine hooked to internet?
Does the 530 have the hole for the leash like the 520 did?
Yup
Absolutely awesome.
Are any of these features coming to the 1030?
