Shane! Late to the party here and been sitting on the fence between the 530 and Bolt instead of my phone. After too long deciding I chose the 530 and spent the last 2 days setting it up wishing I'd gone the Bolt route instead. With a little better explanation from this video I have got most of everything set and bloody sure I won't be trying to reset it again. Keep up the good work. We appreciate it.
OMG ! you just saved the day. I was here to figure out how to get rid of auto-lap and sharp bend notifications. You hit 2 of the the 6 suggestions. I did all of your suggestions, still not sure why I turn "Enable 1 second data recording" since you were suggesting I sheepishly followed.
Thanks! For those of us wishing our Power Taps back, extending these recommendations to save battery life, to make the phone connection optional (save on bluetooth consumption), how to add auto start (one can wish), make battery status more prominent, to dump weather warnings and all other alerts, would be really helpful. Garmin has not stopped complicating their crap. I can rush into turns, on a moto using Navi6, and not be warned how sharp it is, but on a bicycle at 15mph??? Oh, and don't get me started on how unreliable Garmin's Nav6 is (just search).

I too thought that bend warning helps me downhill but in reality I‘m too engaged watching the road to realize the warning and it’s too loud to hear it 🤷🏻♂️.
I have to agree too, in the UK going down country lanes this feature has saved me from crashing on more than 1 occasion. Please remember you’re talking to an international audience when recommending the disabling of safety features.

First, I feel that the ROAM so far has been rather disappointing (a few weeks ago I would have said awful, but now I'll stick to disappointing), it's sluggish, and as I'm planning a longer bike tour for this summer I've discovered that if you plan a multi-week tour as one single long route in RideWithGps, the element will crash over and over again while trying to sync. I still haven't really figured out if Wahoo support actually reads e-mails before replying to them, I've more or less given up on getting help from them. Also, the ROAM hasn't got enough storage to accommodate maps for all the countries I'll pass through. And, of course, Varia... What should I know before getting a Garmin? Not being a fan of the small screen of the BOLT I guess 1030 is the way to go. What do I need to re-think? Is it actually likely to solve my problems? An alternative could be simply bringing two Wahoo units on my tour, and have half of the maps on one and the rest on the other.

OK< don't you need some sort of equipment other than a bike to do this? I have a bike and my power meter, so i'll do it the old way. Any tips regarding the OLD/ normal way?
Have you figured out how to turn off the Virtual Partner? I just got an Edge 830 and don’t see any way to get rid of this, which displays a distracting second arrow when navigating a course.

I have to say, that leaving the option for sharp bends warnings is very helpful when going downhill 30-40mph down winding roads.
Flip to map mode with about 200m scale to see the bends rather than being told in text form to be wary of them.

Why do you use 1 second recording over Smart? Curious as I use Smart on my tri watch and have a 830 on order.
I would assume because 1 sec data is more accurate than smart that (iirc) only records new info.
I was wondering this too. Why should we change it to one second recoding?
Dude! Thank-you for telling me how to disable that (insert bad word) auto lap thing grrrr! Why do they even have that?

Question, how you control on your video the phone remotely?, i see it scrolls without you touching the screen in the video..
Thanks for tip 4!
Greetings from the Galilee.
Record the screen on the iPhone as I'm using it in the video then post it on the screen when I'm editing the video.
Question regarding 'Timer Start Mode' on the activity profile menu. I have set it to Auto, but the start speed automatically defaults to 9.66km/h. What do you have your speed set on?
‘When stopped’ I think... not sure without checking
8.05 km is roughly 5 miles - it's basically set up for the american market.
Or UK
Is there a ideal set-up for 20 minute FTP, w/o doing the process on the head unit. And is 3 sec power the best way for FTP as well?
I'm not a fan of the 20 minute FTP test. Go for a step-test.
OK< don't you need some sort of equipment other than a bike to do this? I have a bike and my power meter, so i'll do it the old way. Any tips regarding the OLD/ normal way?
@@cliffcox7643 Yep. Find a long hill and follow a step test protocol.
Have you figured out how to turn off the Virtual Partner? I just got an Edge 830 and don’t see any way to get rid of this, which displays a distracting second arrow when navigating a course.
I'm planning on looping back to this soon. A lot of people have asked. It might require a request to update the features in firmware.
Please do and thanks! @@gplama
Virtual Partner - a great idea in the board room but in reality it was hardly useful - i too wish it can be disabled. I fear Climb Pro is in that category too......good idea but not useful IRL.
Hi.. i use left power meter too, if i use left only, is my garmin edge will read half of my power? Cause i compare my edge and my fenix, my fenix is read my power value is 2x my value at garmin edge..
Then something isn't right. Check firmware on the power meter and Edge.
Loved the video. I'm just having a nightmare getting the phone to connect to the 530. It gets about 1/3 of the way through and then fails. Time after time. Grrr.
Shane can you explain what step 3 does the 1 sec recording? I sont have a power meter although I do use giant ridesense. Thanks

@@gplama Brill thank you 👍👍
Autolap is set for 5 miles :D no idea why Garmin just did a straight conversion to km instead of picking 10 km
Hi Shane, I plan to buy my first bike gps unit. Would you recommend this Garmin Edge 530 or sth from Wahoo?
Your call. Look at the features you need most and go from there.
Shane Miller - GPLama I’m mostly after reliability, I was hoping you could help me here based on your experiance with both brands.
Need a sticky Garmin mount to hold unit to table for fiming these videos!!! ;)
Why when I save a course after a ride, then sync the device with my computer, does it say on Garmin Connect that I have not created any courses?
hi Shane, iv seen that u have lot of devices on your garmin connect. have u idea how to totally sync two garmin? , i mean i need to have the exact Totals on both device, total of hours and Distances, and for each profile. like indoor , road ecc
thx in advance if u can help.
Look into Physio TrueUp and if your Garmin devices support it.
8.05km = 5 miles. So I guess that’s a good arbitrary distance for Garmin to pick. No idea why they turn it on by default though.
On the display setting I see it is on night mode. Is night mode better?
Personal preference, I guess.
could you help me figure out how to use the tether on my 530? no where does it explain. it's problem so stupid easy. As well my razor light. Very expensive rear light and I would know if it fell to the ground since its behind me. thank you
Here's a good answer on this one on the Garmin Forums: forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-530/164823/edge-530---how-to-install-the-tether
Hi Shane I'm planning on getting the Garmin Edge 830, would you advise me to use similar setup for my Ebike???
Yep. Be sure to setup your eBike profile within the config options and pair the ANT+ LEV sensor so you get all your eBike data too.
@@gplama If possible can you pleas do a video on this. Cheers and happy cycling
Hi Shane after some further research, I've decided to go the the Edge 1030, I'm assuming the setup will be the same
@@KellyanneGill Almost identical, yep! 👍🏼
@@gplama ok thanks, did my biggest ride since getting my Ebike yesterday 46.2km in just under 3 hours
I also change Auto Pause to 3.0 mph upon initial setup of a profile.
Hey Shane, I don’t have a pc - would I be able to get all updates for this model via WiFi using just the head unit? I have an 810 which is never updated and it shows! Love the channel; thanks for all the tips over the years 👍
Do you have a Mac? :) The larger updates (maps) will only transfer over USB. If you can find a PC or a Mac then installing (and uninstalling) Garmin Express will only take a few minutes.
Shane Miller - GPLama we have a Mac but it’s old and I can’t update the os beyond what it already is, so garmin express won’t install. Plus the pcs at my work don’t allow us to install third party apps for security. Do wahoo work completely free from computers? Thanks for your response too, and oh, congratulations too!
@@yan5578 Wahoo work off your phone, no need to plug it in unless you are charging it.
@@yan5578 Wahoo units will pull down everything over Bluetooth or WiFi without the need to plug it in, yep.
