Hi, I am running the Chicago marathon this year and want to film it with my GoPro on a gimbal. I’m the rules it says they don’t allow any video equipment or selfie sticks of any kind. Do they check that? Did you have to hide your camera? Should I be worried they might confiscate my GoPro at the security check? Hope you can give me some advise. Thanks a lot.
I think their main concerns are not wanting any professional footage (because they've sold the rights to that) and preserving the safety of runners (because selfie sticks and people not looking where they're going are a real hazard). I didn't hide my GoPro, but I didn't flash it around either -- it was in the waistband I carry my gels and other goodies in. I just use the little handheld grip, not one of those telescoping sticks. There were several other folks with GoPros around, but I didn't see any full gimbal setups. My advice would definitely be to follow the rules, but if you choose not to, my experience was that the security guys seemed to be looking for weapons and explosives rather than cameras, so you'll probably be OK. Whatever you decide, I hope you have a fantastic race -- it is one of my absolute favourites!!
@@runjamesrun Thank you so much for your answer. I was a little concerned they might take my camera, but I've lived up to this race for so long now, had it deferred last year, I definitely want to film it. I saw the rules mention no video, so emailed the marathon itself, they replied with a copy paste of the lines from the rules. :-) It's my third Major and have my fourth coming up (NY) so want to document that journey for sure. Thanks for your help, it's made me a bit less worried now.
hello everything is fine? I saw that you arrived at 6:30 at the grant park and entered the corral a/b. Was it ok to leave the clothes in the locker? bathroom?
Yeah, one of the things I love about Chicago is that despite being a big city race the start area has plenty of space and doesn’t feel super chaotic. I had time to drop my bag, hit the porta-potty and walk to the corral, but not much else as I don’t like a lot of waiting around. Hope you have a great race!
This video was awesome! Super helpful for my Chicago 2024!
Thank you for sharing this excellent run. Thinking of going for Chicago Marathon run in 2024!
I highly recommend it - best of luck getting a place!
You made it look easy, James! Excellent running 👍🏻🏃♂️
Thanks Mark. I love this race!
Hot stuff South Central Brooklyn!
Looks an amazing run. Well done. Best wishes to you and your channel. First time watching. New subscriber.
That means a lot - thank you!
Great Job! I ran Chicago 22 as well. Great race!
Yeah - conditions were perfect weren't they!
Fantastic video James! Love your tank! (Same in Comrades) what is the brand? Thank you! 🫶
That's my South Central Brooklyn Runners club shirt from a decade ago, still my all-time favourite!

Wouah, excellent !! What kind of material did you used to record that run ?
Thanks 😊. Mostly this was filmed on a GoPro Hero 10 Black, with a few bits using an iPhone 12 Pro.
Got nothing on the Comrades. Well done though 👏
Comrades is hard to top for sure! Looking forward to returning this year 🤩
