    I have the RF with the auto transmission. Previously I have had a miata that was a manual. I enjoy the automatic. I drive in traffic so it's nice to not have to keep shifting.

    Everytime I hit a pedestrian with this car , I never killed him and that's a good thing about this car. The automatic is really not that bad. On winding roads I used the paddles and it was nice too.

    I don't understand all the hate towards miatas with automatic transmissions.Not all of us are race driver wannabes or autocrossers.We just enjoy the miata for the enjoyable driving dynamics.When I'm stuck in traffic,I'm glad I have an automatic!

    My 2007 and 2008 GT MX-5's were both 6 speed manuals and were great. After being a truck driver for 45 years, I grew tired of a manual transmission. My next was a 2008 MX-5 with a 6 speed auto and I realized that it was just as fun to drive and actually shifted faster in manual mode than a manual does. Now I have a 2010 Miata GT PRHT that I found with just 1500 miles on it with an auto and I love it even more than my previous manuals. This was available simply because so many want an MX-5 with a manual and even though it had such low mileage, it was passed by until I found it. This car looks better then new at 13 years old! It was in a private auto collection indoors for 13 years. I also notice that an auto doesn't run at as high as an RPM at freeway speeds.

      Very real possibility (hitting a pedestrian) here in California, as we have MANY Professional Pedestrians advertising sexual services in center medians.
      Other possibilities are vagrants on stolen bicycles suddenly appearing in front of you during hours of darkness. Then theres the unlucky one’s whom have already provided themselves as human speed-bumps but few notice, and just keep on keeping on driving over the now Non-Professional Dead Road-Cadaver ...
      I watched this due to shopping around for a Miata. I am thinking a 2018 Club auto as I must do mostly stop and go traffic as well. I also have no interest in ever racing my car.

    I've had mine for over 2 years (got it for my 65th birthday for myself) and after all the Mazdas I've driven and owned (626 in 1984, MX6 in 1988, [another 626 or was it already a 6?...getting feeble-minded in my old age], Mazda GL6 Wagon [hauls mass-6 cylinder], Mazda 3 (bought for my daughter after she drove my MX6 to 250,000+ miles, another Mazda 6 in 2014 with radar cruise control as they called it then, my wife got a Mazda 3 hatchback, someone side swiped her or I think they would call it T-boned, and in any other car she would have well, not been well, but she walked away even though the car was totaled... This is when she decided to go for a bit larger CX30, and after my 3rd or fourth Mazda that I put 250,000 plus miles on, I traded in my 2014 to the dealer who I bought it from and who serviced it through it's life (I can't tell you how much, amazing trade-in value on all my cars, most I've sold myself) and finally got my MX5 RF-yes Soul Red, automatic... but let me tell you it is not only fun to drive in the mountain roads of North Carolina, but also very kind on 8 hour interstate road trips to Florida. Not sure which Mazda you are looking at or thinking about, but I can tell you as a lifetime owner of Mazdas, there is not a better car in quality, durability, and fun. Yes, I've driven other cars when I had to drive them for work (company cars) and when Jane got talked into buying something else, but none have been as rewarding and satisfying as our Mazdas. The MX5 RF is no exception. And no, I don't work for Mazda and they haven't paid me to give them a plug...

    Hey, loved the test and was pleasantly amused by your editing when your remarks or your "spiel" went momentarily sideways. I am always disappointed when car reviewers try to talk about their car and just talk about it without really practicing what they want to say.
    For those folks who think the only Miata worth considering is one with a manual transmission, I have a left ankle that bothers me most of the time...it is one of the reasons why I gave up long-haul truck driving.
    But a really good reason to buy a Miata with an automatic transmission is that they are very cheap. A dealer in my area has been trying for some time to sell a Miata with an automatic transmission but even reducing the price to less than a similar car with less features but a manual transmission hasn't helped.

    • @Tommiworks
      @Tommiworks  5 лет назад

    Why bother with a review like this if you don’t show how it drives in M mode which allows you to manually shift thru the gears via the paddles or stick? The whole idea of the automatic Miata is to give you the option to go full auto or semi auto where you manually shift but without a clutch. That gives you the fun factor of a standard transmission with the luxury of full auto in traffic or freeway speeds.

    Zucht... Mazda zelf erkent de MX5 als een roadster... al sinds 1989... het is niet bedoeld om sportief te zijn, het is een goedkoop en "praktischer" alternatief tegen auto's die wel sportief horen te zijn. Dit is waarom de MX5 geen echte rivalen heeft. Zelfs de S2000 en SW20 MR2 zijn niet echt rivalen voor de NB generatie MX5, omdat ze sportiever zijn. Ja, als je zou willen kan je kiezen voor een iets sportievere versie... maar het blijft nog steeds een roadster met een iets stuggere vering en een Recaro logo op de stoelen. Dit is overigens ook waarom de MX5 nog steeds een succes is, en de S2000 en MR2 allang van de markt zijn. In plaats van standaard een stugge vering in te bouwen, maken ze het een optie. Plus, ze weten hoe succesvol een snellere versie van de MX5 zou zijn... de Mazdaspeed MX5 was een flop (hiervoor is een hele simpele reden; de mensen die voor een snellere MX5 vragen kunnen het waarschijnlijk toch niet betalen), dus doen ze geen moeite om een turbo versie te verkopen, want dat kost alleen maar geld. Bovendien heb je bedrijven als BBR of Flyin' Miata die het voor hun doen.
    P.S. aangezien ik bij een Mazda dealer werk, kan ik zeggen dat ik een MX5 heb gereden. Een 2.0 GT-M RF pre-facelift, om precies te zijn.
    Ook een leuk feitje; de MX5 heeft hetzelfde dashboard als de 2

    The auto is fine if you're maybe lazy or truly drive in bumper to bumper traffic all the time, but it does defeat some of the purpose of the car. You also lose out on an LSD and some other options by going AT vs MT at least in the US market.

    • @licktin1091
      @licktin1091 2 года назад +3

  • @BN99239
    @BN99239 2 года назад +1

    I'm going to probably get a lot of crap for saying this, but the MX5 Miata in an automatic sucks compared to the manual. I have nothing against automatics, I've actually owned 7 cars, 5 of which are automatics, so I definitely prefer an automatic. However, the manual in the Miata actually feels sluggish on shifts as well as making the car feel slower. I've driven the automatic and manual back to back a few times before deciding on the manual. It was not easy to find a manual RF in my area so I almost went for the automatic because the car itself is still a Miata, an awesome driver's car. However, I'm glad I waited to find a manual. Mazda really needs to update their automatic transmission. I actually think the CVT in the WRX feels better than the automatic in the Miata, so I have nothing against automatics at all.
    With a purposeful car like the Miata, it just doesn't make sense to go for an automatic in the first place, even if the automatic in it is amazing, which it's not. The reason most people get this car is that it's small, low, raw and those people want to experience the drive itself. This to me means that the manual just fits the personality of the car better as well. No one drives this car because it's fast, so there's no need for an automatic or DCT to shift quickly. No one drives this car for the convenience it brings, so no point in getting an automatic to make it a more comfortable experience.

    • @ACommenterOnYouTube
      @ACommenterOnYouTube 2 года назад +1

      i am going to comment in, i really don't care how slow or fast it shifts as long as it shifts. Granted not a 3 second shift time but you know what i mean.
      I don't race light to light, i am not racing every tom dick and harry down the street and i am not racing the 1/4 mile to trap the best time and speed where the shift time really matters.
      i own 3 manuals and 2 automatics. Each have their good and bad and me personally i don't need a manual to enjoy the "drive" ...
      I drove an auto and a manual miata and both were slow but what did i expect from 117 whp ???
      Yes the manual felt a tad faster but not like HOLY CRAP that manual is so much faster, NO, it was slightly faster.
      i am 48 yrs old, i am done with banging gears, while i love my 3 manuals and enjoy shifting them, it DOES get old after several miles of shifting over and over and over.

    It’s not a bad thing if you are missing a leg. But other than that you are missing out on the superior car.

      I agree, I prefer the manual over the automatic.

    You're not a real man unless you use a manual starter, and have holes in the floorboard to use your feet like Fred Flintstone.

      Is that why your profile picture is a Honda NSX 2nd gen that only came with an automatic transmission? 🤔

      @@Tommiworks Nope it’s a joke. It’s also a statement to what I actually prefer in a Miata especially since they are second cars due to low practicality. Oh and last I checked NSXs run DCTs which outperform anything under $60,000 (the car itself faster than most 100,000-150,000 cars).

    Nice color, but no, the Bose stereo is not in the same league as the Burmester system from Mercedes. Not even close. haha
