  • “The Magician” Efren Reyes faces CJ Wiley at the 19th US Open 9-Ball Championship in Chesapeake Virginia in September of 1994.
    This was a matchup between two legends of the game.
    While Reyes had yet to win a US Open 9-Ball Championship at the time of this match, he was already known as one of the best players in the sport.
    Wiley was also a great player in his own right, and had just defeated Rodney Morris in his prior match.
    This was a winners side match, race to 13, winner breaks.
    Billy Incardona and special guest Johnny Archer provide the commentary.

      CJ explained recently that he had been flustered/annoyed before starting because they changed the match time from 9pm to 7pm without telling him.
      He only found out minutes before the match and didn't prepare as he was used to. The organizers had told Efren, but not CJ.
      CJ said he couldn't shake it during the match and let it get to him.

His strategy there was to get into a position where he could execute a jump shot with a good degree of confidence if Efren gave it back to him, which I believe he did. Rolling out after the break is one of the things in 9-ball that requires knowledge and an understanding of your own abilities. Choosing the right roll-out is not easy to do and is very underrated.

When I looked up Efren I was shocked to see one 9-Ball championship and one World 9-ball championship. People keep saying he’s the greatest of all time but how is this possible when Earl Strickland has a staggering five US 9-ball championships and three World 9-ball Championships. @@crochetcornermd9182 I don’t believe your information is correct. This is what I see in the records annual with respect to Efren Reyes. In 1999 he won the World 9-ball Pool
      Championship by beating Chang Ping. He won the 1994 U.S Open Pool Championship (formerly the U.S 9-Ball championship) by beating Nick Varner. In 2004 he won the World 8-Ball championship by beating Marlon Manalo. In comparison Earl Strickland has FIVE US 9-Ball Titles and THREE WPA World Nine-ball Championships. Way too may to list years and opponents.

    Reyes should have lost the game when he unscrewed his cue. Wiley did not know it was other than his playing cue. Makes no difference, he lost the frame, it interrupted the flow of the game. The ref was wrong. Not to shake his hand? Wiley was wrong. Humans make mistakes and i suspect the ref learned something thst day.

    Taking your cue apart is an old dirty trick to play with your opponents mind to make him miss his shot. It's one of the many "sharking" moves. If you want to change a shaft or something you should do it during your turn or between games. You can also let your opponent or ref know that you are going to do this to be safe.

    • @sdickinson5234
      @sdickinson5234 9 месяцев назад +2

      Right, there's no other reason for him to do it in the middle of his opponent's inning. He could do it when he gets the break again and the ref is racking the balls. I didn't know Efren was like that.

    • @nickp4793
      @nickp4793 9 месяцев назад +7

      Efren has done this for 40 years, you can see him change shafts on many matches. It's how they do it in the Philippines. Stuff like that is no big deal there.

    • @sdickinson5234
      @sdickinson5234 9 месяцев назад

      @@nickp4793 Sure you can change shafts or do whatever you want when it's your turn. I have never seen a pro do that shark move, ever. He absolutely knew what he was doing because he was about to lose the match, and it worked.

      @@sdickinson5234 I understand what you are saying, believe me, and I know that is 100% the culture in the States. Where Efren is from they simply don't care about little stuff like that, and no one there would have even blinked if Efren did the same. I don't think he meant it as a shark at all. IMO:)

But these guys can do everything Efren could, plus they figured out the break and can jump with ease and accuracy.

    I got the 8 from CJ one afternoon in Affton Billiards for 20 a game I had him about 6 games stuck when the house pro came in and asked me what I was doing. I said robbing this sucker with a spray painted pool cue for $20 a game He said that’s CJ Wiley and you need more than the 8. And that’s a spray painted Balabushka he’s playing with I told CJ his action was queered played till we were even and kindly quit him
