  • 2 of the biggest things you'll have to figure out if you're going to succeed as a self-taught designer are:
    1. how to build a network/circle of other designer colleagues
    2. how to get (honest) feedback about your work so you can improve.

    I think this is very valuable. Yes, you did not tell us how to solve the challenges but it’s really helpful to listen to someone describe them in detail. I’m not surprised to hear these things, but honestly they’re not the first things that come to mind. Your advice is always fresh, thoughtful, and helpful.

    I'm kind of a self taught designer - I studied Architecture then pivoted to doing freelance work in a niche within graphic design. I can confirm that not having access to feedback is one of the biggest obstacles for my growth.

    Before I dropped the design school, I was chatting with a teacher about charging 1k on projects internationally and she was like, "I only reach out to the neighborhood" is that really experience?

    • @arpadracz-fodor3864
      @arpadracz-fodor3864 5 лет назад +2

      I think the "neighborhood" is a very important thing, which we tend to forget these days. Understanding your very surrundings and making it visible and meaningful through deisgn is - I believe - crucial to your growth. Also if you dig deep in your local community, you might be surprised by what you might find.

    How would you get a job in the field you are trying to learn if you are still at that stage where you need beginner feedback?! :)
    That's where I am "platoing" at the moment...

    • @caricreate2208
      @caricreate2208 Год назад +2

      For the most part, people think less of themselves and their skills than it´s actually true. You dont have to get the greatest job. If you have some work that you like and youre proud of, build your portfolio! Helped me score an amazing job i didnt expect, and im 1st year design student. A portfolio shows your progess, your skill, your motivation. It gives the employer something visual to look at, and most people dont even have a portfolio, so thats a plus for u if u have one. Trust in yourself and that you will grow with your challenges! Apply to many places, even ones they dont hire on websites, take innitiative. Good luck :)

    What is the best way in your opinion to learn design theory as a self taught?

    • @SefatChowdhuryIsTheKing
      @SefatChowdhuryIsTheKing 5 лет назад +3

      There are some classic design papers you have to read to build the designer foundation and then you have to understand consumer psychology and human factors-which you can read from great books available out there. As you build your consciousness, you have to further look into social science, cultural probes to understand how people think, act and behave for what kind of motivation or inspiration.
      Once you have all these, designing is about solving problems and creating value for people and business.

    • @ReplyequalsNerd
      @ReplyequalsNerd 4 года назад

      @@SefatChowdhuryIsTheKing any sources to classic design papers?

    • @SefatChowdhuryIsTheKing
      @SefatChowdhuryIsTheKing 4 года назад +1

      @@ReplyequalsNerd Usually if you go for a masters degree, you have to read and understand those. However, they are also available on the internet but without a mentor you wouldn't know which one you should read and for what? Interaction design foundation is somewhat good for that. If you read the contents, the references contain many of those papers. From there youd find out more good stuff.
      www.interaction-design.org/literature
      Thats why, being a good designer takes a lot of time and solid understanding of designerly intellect. The other way you can find these out is to browse through university course pages where they share course materials. You can also email university teachers for sharing those resources with you. Google is your best friend.

    Can an online school, not a group, provide what a traditional school can?
    Perhaps the face to face is missing but u can still network and get feedback.

    Why would I want "self-taught" advice from someone who received formal design training in school.
    You will never know the true struggles and experience of self-teaching yourself something unless you actually self-teach yourself.
    This advice isn't really that compelling either.

      I just dropped out of design school 'cz I couldn't afford it anymore, I was in 3rd semester, so I started learning on my own. And what has helped me be an autodidact is... look for design programs of different universities, then just try to replicate that curriculum program on your own. Look for youtube channels, "The Futur" is one that has helped me a lot, and just take advantage of the free content that is out there
