      It's highly misleading. A rehearsal lasts 2.5 hours minus 20 minutes break. If you waste your time babbling about what the work means you lose precious time. And orchestra musicians hate conductors who talk too much.
      I have heard many detractors rake on Currentzis for his pseudo-intellectualism and pompousness. Now I know what they meant. This guy is full of himself.

    These type of rehearsals/performances could be very useful in helping general public to understand music. But this way, they would fall out of “entertainment” and quickly become educational. And that, I’m afraid, isn’t the Theodors goal.
    He likes to be in the center of the spotlight, mostly preaching to the choir. He likes to “meditate” and be worshipped as a result, during the rehearsal, he seems to get into spontaneous and unnecessary “splitting hair”, getting into nano-fiber of music organization, result of which is usually exaggeration of “piano” into quadruple piano, and micro-details of “zusammen” and its articulation. He claims that his role is “to tell the truth” in the name of composer, not really, he uses composer to glorify Theodor Currentzis, keeping the orchestra on this unbearable short leash.
    I wish him to shave off his narcissism and allow the orchestra freedom of breathing with their own creativity. Recently, Theodor shown few signs in going that way, which is great. He will have a chance to put his name into the glorious list of conductors, otherwise, it will be just very sad.

      Completely agree. Huge ego!!! this unique maestro. Needs to moderate his approach to the musicians. !!!

    • @mr.winter3174
      @mr.winter3174 Год назад +20

      Completely disagreeing here. The orchestra doesn't convey a coherent feel and interpretation in the beginning. How the piece is played doesn't make you feel anything.
      He really gets them there and everything starts to make sense. It's getting so much more emotional after his drastic interventions. And one has to understand that a conductor needs to act in front of the orchestra in a theatrical way to mirror the expression for every seat to see. Then every player knows how to breathe together. They can't see each other but everyone can see the conductor. So it's less about ego. It's more about showing everyone how to feel in real time.
      His musical results are emotionally exceptional. He gives his interpretation which makes total sense to me. Heard this piece countless times before without any soul. So I think what he's doing here works astonishingly great.

    • @Tortuosit
      @Tortuosit Год назад +1

      I have no idea if he is overly narcissistic or not. If I were part of an orchestra, I'd for sure struggle in following a young person telling me what the composer wants - in a piece I love and know myself.
      But I have to accept the conductor is in a position to have a better, more global overview on how the ensemble plays it.
      Unrelated to this video here: There's this general issue of orchestras being experts at certain pieces, but their changing conductors are not...

    The orchestra is the conductor's instrument. He can play it the way he wants, for better or worse. The question really is, does the conductor really understand the composer? Shostakovitch, to my mind, was not hard for virtuoso musicians to understand. Never the less, the conductor has to convince all within ear shot.

    Why is this man standing in front of the orchestra telling them things as if they don't probably know it already? This isn't a junior high or high school orchestra. Very condescending and egotistical. But not anything new for this conductor. The day he stops making everything about himself and stops imposing his wrong headed ideas into every nook and cranny of the music, is the day he'll become a better conductor. After watching some of this video, it becomes painfully obvious why his recordings of Beethoven are so genuinely wretched and wrong.

    • @kriskoulaaizen4942
      @kriskoulaaizen4942 Год назад +24

      I'll tell you what, the orchestra doesn't know. They are all incredible musicians, professional, but it's not their job to think on interpretation. That's a conductors job. And he does that beautiful, even with the old tricks of his. By your logic there is no need to work hard and careful on the piece, and this laziness is the reason why a lot of classical music sound soulless.
      And I don't understand where does he talk about himself?

    • @schrysafis

      @jeremyberman7808 Год назад +3

      @@kriskoulaaizen4942 Of course the musicians must work hard. And the conductor is the captain of the ship. And all are there to best bring out what the composer's intentions were in each composition they perform. And yet the strings (not talking about violins, violas etc.) shouldn't be so taut that there isn't room for the musicians to breath within those parameters. What I hear from this conductor's performances is the exact opposite. He's so eager to make pieces sound new, a breath of fresh air from the past. Yet, due to his ego, the music is turned into something far from what the composer intended (in Beethoven, it's laughable in fact).
