    Hey Luke! Great video! I will say though that when you get faced with a Kia, Mercades, BMW, or Volkswagen or any light that was previously restored with 2k clear, 1500 trizact will not do the job. With those lights I sometimes have to go down to 320 or worst case scenario, 220. However on lights that werent that bad like in this video, your process is fine! I would recommend spraying one heavy coat of meguiars headlight clear coat on it afterwards as ceramic coatings dont bond to polycarbonate the same way they bond to paint. I had a 7 year coating fail on a pair of restored headlights in 6 months. Coatings dont protect against rock chips bug etchings that are left on too long etc. Just like manufacturers clear coat over the base coat, there needs to be a clear coat on top of the raw polycarbonate to protect from impacts and bugs. That way the rocks chip the clear coat, not the polycarbonate, and that way the bugs etch the clear, and dont burn into the actual lense. After a couple of days, the client can bring the car back and you can apply a ceramic coating on top of the clear coat. This is just my $0.02 though. On a differnt note, i want that mirka lol

    Ive done well over a 100 headlights. A couple thoughts . Do away with the blue tape . It's not made for automotive paint . Run the risk of peeling up clear if already damaged. You don't use concrete on sheetrock . Use stuff actually made for the task . There is a ton of products out there specifically made for headlights. Use a coating that's made for headlights. I use megs spray headlight coating. There is a difference between transparent and translucent. Both will let light through but it's how the light is passed through that is the difference.

      Agreed. I've done over 30 lights finishing with meguiars headlight coating and it's amazing and necessary. Just like a cars base coat is clear coated, not just ceramic coated, headlights need to have a clear coat on top to save the polycarbonate from damage

    Anyone that is trying this for the first time. If you care about your vehicles paint just remove the headlight and clamp it to a table before you start. It’s so easy to focus on the wet sanding the headlight lense then forget the other side of the pad is also sanding down through the tape into the bumper paint. Then the sweating starts!

    5:32 That is a solid point you make. It incentivizes the customer to follow through on the second booking. I am curious if you use the term "value-add" versus calling it a "free upgrade." Personally, I think the words "free upgrade" are more powerful. As other commentors have said, I'd like to know what product you used at the end? It looks like a glass bottle of ceramic coating?

    I use iron fallout remover to start. Almost clears the lense on its own. Then i compound, polish and ceramic coat. No sandpaper and the ceramic makes it last.

    Luke, I already have Flex brand DA polisher and a 3" backing hook and loop plate. All i need is the grit discs. Do you start with the 800, then the 1500, and then the 3000 grit ?

    I do this exact method as well lol ! The only thing I do differently is after sanding I use rubbing compound let it sit for a bit then I polish it off and finish it or with car wax paste so the headlight won’t look so cloudy.

    I ALWAYS tell my customers who want headlight restoration done that Im not promising any specific outcome as we won't truly know how much better it will be until its done. i simply say "ill do it then if doesn't come out like we want then i can charge less or nothing if it made no difference and still looks crappy but obviously itll be better than it is now. this always makes customer happy and relieves pressure on you to make it brand new. but if it turns out perfect you get the most $ because client is thrilled they pay you more than you asked for. plus its one of those things that put the detail on another level. headlight restoration is underrated. i could easily see myself stopping detailing to do headlight restoration only 🤔 😆

    I recommend a Zep spray bottle and better tape. That spray bottle sucks and that tape is shit. The spray bottle is more of a convenience thing but the tape is supposed to protect the paint, that cheap ass tape isn’t gonna protect it.

    That is absolutely going to yellow again in a few months to a year. You have to sand it and clear coat it with 2K or youre wasting your time and your clients time and money.

    • @dansanders340
      @dansanders340 4 месяца назад +1

      2k will still crack after a few years according to the Chevy mechanic I know who's still trying out more clearcoats after 10 years. The new common practice for detailers as far as ive seen is a ceramic coating, one with 3 years or more of durability, and that way you don't have to worry about cracking or yellowing, you can just keep sanding it or polishing it down to reapply as needed. I plan on trying diy detail's 8 year ceramic on my headlights to see how it bonds to the plastic and for how long
