Yasunori Mitsuda (composer) is such a treasure. He did Xenogears as well and many others. The most recent one I can think of is an upcoming game called Sea of Stars which is a direct homage to Chrono Trigger.
And there are some non-recruitable characters who get portraits: like Gogh, Miguel, Lisa, Marge, etc. So it does remain a surprise when someone like General Viper or Leena joins your party.
I hated this game and even came to hate a lot of the music when I watched a "100%" video series about it by someone who seemed to take the longest time possible for every action, standing around doing nothing constantly as if slowly reading a faq in real time amidst playing, so I appreciate seeing the game played through by someone who has not just mostly memorized the guide but also explains the significance of what happens and what does not happen. I also wondered how much difference field effect really made, and now I see that it matters quite a bit, at least for going fast.

Maybe is just me but i hate to see the game moving forward fast, i understand it saves time to make the run quick but man i feel like you wanna just get over with it feeling. It was the same as final fantasy 12 i tried to play the newer version with the fastforward and got bored in like a half hour. Great run tought !
It's an unlockable feature in the original game with NG+ and the most recent release of it just has it available by default now. Raelcun explains it right at the beginning.

I'm surprised the party wasn't immediately suspicious when Sarge started talking during the body swap.
It's interesting how every recruitable character has a portrait, so you can tell who you can get in the game.

Some characters that have portraits aren't recruitable. They were likely to have been planned to be recruitable however.
