Must be exillerating but exhausting at the same time 😅 I ones saw a three Michelin star chef judging the cooking of common household people. After tasting one of the dressings the only thing he could say emotional in awe: "this is gold...". There is something fascinating when a teacher/master reconizes glory.
a year has passed and I'm loving it as much as I have the first time I saw this.. it's so beautiful seeing an expert such as yourself (yes you are, don't be modest 😘) completely blown away by what this bodily manifestation of music can perform when presented with modern technology and a human body.. your knowledge of what makes J.C. great is what compliments his video of his with this reaction video by showing to us mere mortals on what kind of level he is performing in order to get a glimpse of the divine musicality that is J.C. musical mind.. if music is God, then J.C. is his-- wtf.. I think you may be doing a lot more. This guy is not only a great harmony singer & arranger, He's multi instrumental as well. I think your public may be interested in your comments on his live recordings. Check out his own composition, " Hideaway " & " Don't you Know " ( He's done others ) Especially when he updates the performance to a full orchestra. Probably the best is with The Metropole Orchest These are his song arrangements with the added orchestral arranging by Jules Buckley ( Conductor ) You talk about his ability, great, but most of what you see of him on You Tube, he's only 17 to 23 / 24 . It's astounding. The other thing about him is he's smiling most of the time, so he's creating happiness to his listeners. You don't see that often. A truly lovely human being in a world of conflict. He is also a world class video producer. I would think he's picking up most of 100% of his royalties. So, a good business man too. Love to hear your reviews on live Jacob recordings.
There's a sense, in music, of "coming home" that composers usually try to attain as much as possible. Bach did it beautifully. He goes through all kinds of key changes to achieve that sense of coming home at the end of a piece. Jacob does more moving around than Bach ever dreamed of which means the sense of coming home at the end is almost overwhelming.
The thing is, Jacob mildly leads chords from A448hz to 440, and then comes to just intonation with harmonically mellow chords. Dunno if you needed this, but i find it incredible
Craziest thing is the final resolution is the simplest harmony of the whole piece. It's a plain old plagal cadence but in the context of everything that came before it... stunning.
i thought i'm over emotional, but Jacob brought me to tears so many times, he brings up so many emotions.. an absolute killer for me is his "harm u" project, he's harmonizing over short clips people sent him. some of them are so other worldly beautiful, i cry like a little boy :-) Big hug and best wishes from Vienna, Austria

Yes, I really think Jacob is the musicians' musician, our go to for musical intelligence where we feel like musical beginners. He is next level, probably unattainable, yet so inspiring. Never have I had so many emotions drawn out of me than I have with Jacob's music.

You are an incredibly expressive man. It's quite infectious to see your very unapologetic emotional reaction and the way you react to the music as it genuinely moves you. I hope you replay those songs afterwards so you can get the full uninterrupted experience without having to worry about pausing and commentating for the sake of youtube.
There was actually a microtonal key change in moon river too! At one point in the last half of moon river he goes into D half sharp. He just did it in such a way that it's hard to notice upon first listen. Also, you should definitely listen to his take on "All Night Long" with Take Six. Absolutely incredible. I love these reactions because it's like reliving my own first reactions again!
I've been a fan of Jacob for as long as he has been putting out music on RUclips. Watching your videos and especially your pure and emotional reactions to his masterworks makes me relive my own emotions and love his music again on a level I thought had been lost to getting accustomed to his music. sometimes what brings me to tears even more, is the gratefulness I suddenly feel for this child. It makes me feel so small and so grateful at the same time. You sir have a very sharp sense of hearing, great analysis overall, most of these microtonal changes really went past me at first, I had to read on it to understand what was going on musically. Impressive stuff considering he was maybe 17 years old at the time, mind-blowing stuff really.
I just recently found your channel and you recently found Jacob. I found him in early 2020, and after obsessing over and watching everything I could about him, analyzes, video essays, even his own ted talks and masterclasses. Seeing you react, as someone who understands from your own experiences and not having only been introduced to things I know now through Jacob, makes me giddy. I know it seems disrespectful if I admit I’m giggling madly as you cry listening to Jacob, but hearing your opinion as you, a professional, are blown away by the musical feast that is Jacob’s genius, makes me feel a newfound sense of Wonder and excitement that Jacob’s music always brings me. His music always leaves me with tears in my eyes, goosebumps on my skin, wonder in my heart, and an unparalleled excitement. So thanks for covering him! My favorite piece of his is Hideaway if you want to give another well harmonized masterpiece a listen. I won’t spoil the tuning system change...
His harmonizing is vaguely reminiscent of the vocal group Take 6, but he takes musical theory and praxis to a whole new level. I have never heard anything else quite like what he is doing. His acoustic work (without electrical instruments) has a different kind of beauty, like his cover of Martin’s Fix You.

I enjoy your reactions so much (honest, musically savvy, I'm right there with you emotionally), that you're the first musical reactor I've been rewatching. I like your comment about his being a level of genius you didn't know existed. Exactly. On top of all his musical prowess, and delicate emotions, the overwhelming emotion that comes through is the pure joy of creating beauty. His live performances (e.g. You've got a friend" are equally amazing for a different reason - not only can he improvise at this level of sophistication, but he's completely connected to the audience and at one point abandons his instrument/singing and just conducts the audience).
It's crazy to think about how technology has enabled people like Jacob Collier to make perfect choirs by singing in sync with themselves. And by looping you can even do stuff like this live. It's magical.

Really appreciate the vocal insights you give to these. You did in fact correctly identify the quarter tone modulation. David Bruce made a great video on how he manages to make it sound smooth. It's amazingly clever. The only thing I dislike about Bruce's video is his doubt that it serves an expressive purpose rather than technical.
btw, Moon River also has some microtonal shenanigans. You can see where they are in June Lee's transcription. Also John, if you're considering more reactions to Collier, I'd recommend the performance of "Hideaway" for the Paste Magazine channel where he arranges his song for 6 vocalist/instrumentalists (including himself) doing double duty.
I would have thought the microtonal shifts were a party trick, but they are a revelation. When I heard Moon River I did not realize there were the shifts, I just kept thinking WTF am I hearing?! He understands vibration and human perception in ways that are revolutionary.
I think you're exactly right John (around 13:52) where you say the song starts to darken... starting with "What can I give him..."... it makes the final "Give my heart" so powerful, it's like it's overcoming the darkness.
I think you’d get a kick out of Jacob’s live BBC Proms rendition of his own composition ‘In the Real Early Morning’ with the Metropole Orkest. Single voice, celesta and a lovely orchestral arrangement.
Some of my favourites by him include 'Fascinating Rythmn', 'The Christmas Song', 'The Flintstones' and 'In The Real Early Morning'. All of these just blow my mind.

I think I saw in an interview with Jacob that he started this song in A-428 when it was the "bleak midwinter", but in the later stages when the "sun comes out" he has modulated to A 440, so the key is still relatively the same, but it's tangibly brighter

Sorry if this is old news I know it’s a 2 year old video, but I wanted to clarify the microtonal key change a bit because I know you’ll appreciate it if you haven’t heard the details yet!! The way he does it has more to do with the reason we use “equal” temperament vs “just.” As I’m sure you already know, we use equal temperament as a compromise, trading in-tune chords for the ability to have all keys and chords intervalically equivalent. When Jacob modulates to G half sharp, he does it by climbing a ladder of 4 chords that are sung *more* in tune than our usual equally-tempered notes. He does it entirely with his voice, no tape speed change involved! Thanks for your insightful and enjoyable reaction, friend!

It's utterly baffling when you hear/experience something you do/don't understand and can't explain. This is the essence of Jacob Collier's musical genius. I'm with you in every video you do reviewing Jacob's songs.
Fantastic analysis! One other astonishing aspect of this song happens between 8:37 and 8:54 where he seamlessly modulates to the key of G-half-sharp in the last chord, singing the next few lines 50 cents 'out of tune'. He somehow brings out the fabulous brightness of that microtonal shift while making it look effortless.

as someone whose watched Jacob from his teenage years to who he’s becoming in his adulthood. he is truly beyond his age and the time of the world we live in at just 26 his talent absolutely profound. i’d suggest either his tiny desk or his single “Hideaway” from his first album. just be prepared for more tears.
I love the fact that you have the vulnerability to feel this as deeply as it deserves to be felt. There is some(no)thing beneath the technical brilliance, the harmonic inventiveness, the microtonal shenanigans, the mastery of polyrhythm,and timbre and the extraordinary meta-awareness of the relationship between all these aspects of musical invention. That nameless brilliance is what illuminates the best of Jacob Collier, and indeed all great art. It is the closest thing i have ever encountered to what humans like to call 'god'
Mind blowing. I have always loved the plaintive nature of In the bleak midwinter but Jacob stretches and morphs sound, incredulity and soul as the reinvents this beautiful classic. On top of this we have the pleasure of your learned analysis as well as your ecstasy and incredulity whilst listening to genius unfolding in sound. Landed him his first Grammy as far as I remember. “Don’t you worry about a thing” is one of those songs where Jacob gets to flex more than just his vocal arrangements. About the microtonal shift (as explained by Jacob himself in a master class you can find here on YT): What Jacob is doing is he's exploiting the differences between just intonation and equal temperament to smooth out that quarter-tone modulation. Each of the four chords in the transition is in just intonation, and shifts the key up by a few cents relative to the equal-tempered note, until you reach 50 cents for the landing chord.
One of my closest friends of 65 years, Jim Keltner, studied with Freddie Gruber when we were teenagers-in the early ‘60s! Freddie sold me my first set of vibes at Barry Grasmueck’s (?) music store in Pasadena, CA! I remained a vibist, studying with Bobby Hutcherson for a year, and performing on vibes just a couple of years till I heard Bill Evans on “Kind Of Blue”! From then on I have been a jazz pianist-composer! Keltner and I are still close friends-both musically and personally...
I showed up for my lesson at Freddie’s to find Jim Keltner and Mitch Mitchell sitting in the drum room, Freddie had me go through my lesson for both of them. We all ended up at Roger Linn’s house, the Linn drum machine had just come out. Pretty amazing night for me at 19!
John, we must be near the same age then! I turned 80 on 10-10-2022. I rank Jim as a studio drummer in the top 5 if not overall number 1. (And You DO know Jim is the drummer on “Josie” on Steely Dan’s Aja album, right? Keltner has been on over 150 Gold albums and at least 75 Platinum! I was upstairs in his home studio after dinner and a lot of those presentation albums were on the walls! Jim has never considered himself a “jazz” drummer, but he HAS done jazz recordings-the last of which was with Brad Meldhau, so-as I’ve always believed-he’s always been a jazz drummer, but he’s made his living in commercial and pop studio work.

@@keroykk Yeah, I suspect that the just tuning is one of the reasons that final chord sequence is so incredibly beautiful.
Craziest thing is the final resolution is the simplest harmony of the whole piece. It's a plain old plagal cadence but in the context of everything that came before it... stunning.

Yes, I really think Jacob is the musicians' musician, our go to for musical intelligence where we feel like musical beginners. He is next level, probably unattainable, yet so inspiring. Never have I had so many emotions drawn out of me than I have with Jacob's music.

There was actually a microtonal key change in moon river too! At one point in the last half of moon river he goes into D half sharp. He just did it in such a way that it's hard to notice upon first listen. Also, you should definitely listen to his take on "All Night Long" with Take Six. Absolutely incredible. I love these reactions because it's like reliving my own first reactions again!

I say this every time but I will watch every single Jacob Collier React you do, nobody can put into words what's happening like you and even you are at a loss for words most of the time. His work is so far beyond anything anyone anywhere is doing to my knowledge
When someone shows me something beyond my definition/parameters of beauty and joy as Jacob does with his music, all I can do is accept it as such a pure gift and I cry. As though the universe is saying "see, there really is more than you know - won't you trust me and let me take you there?"

You sir have a very sharp sense of hearing, great analysis overall, most of these microtonal changes really went past me at first, I had to read on it to understand what was going on musically. Impressive stuff considering he was maybe 17 years old at the time, mind-blowing stuff really.

I just recently found your channel and you recently found Jacob. I found him in early 2020, and after obsessing over and watching everything I could about him, analyzes, video essays, even his own ted talks and masterclasses. Seeing you react, as someone who understands from your own experiences and not having only been introduced to things I know now through Jacob, makes me giddy. I know it seems disrespectful if I admit I’m giggling madly as you cry listening to Jacob, but hearing your opinion as you, a professional, are blown away by the musical feast that is Jacob’s genius, makes me feel a newfound sense of Wonder and excitement that Jacob’s music always brings me. His music always leaves me with tears in my eyes, goosebumps on my skin, wonder in my heart, and an unparalleled excitement. So thanks for covering him! My favorite piece of his is Hideaway if you want to give another well harmonized masterpiece a listen. I won’t spoil the tuning system change...
His harmonizing is vaguely reminiscent of the vocal group Take 6, but he takes musical theory and praxis to a whole new level. I have never heard anything else quite like what he is doing. His acoustic work (without electrical instruments) has a different kind of beauty, like his cover of Martin’s Fix You.

I enjoy your reactions so much (honest, musically savvy, I'm right there with you emotionally), that you're the first musical reactor I've been rewatching. I like your comment about his being a level of genius you didn't know existed. Exactly. On top of all his musical prowess, and delicate emotions, the overwhelming emotion that comes through is the pure joy of creating beauty. His live performances (e.g. You've got a friend" are equally amazing for a different reason - not only can he improvise at this level of sophistication, but he's completely connected to the audience and at one point abandons his instrument/singing and just conducts the audience).
It's crazy to think about how technology has enabled people like Jacob Collier to make perfect choirs by singing in sync with themselves. And by looping you can even do stuff like this live. It's magical.

Really appreciate the vocal insights you give to these. You did in fact correctly identify the quarter tone modulation. David Bruce made a great video on how he manages to make it sound smooth. It's amazingly clever. The only thing I dislike about Bruce's video is his doubt that it serves an expressive purpose rather than technical.
btw, Moon River also has some microtonal shenanigans. You can see where they are in June Lee's transcription.
Also John, if you're considering more reactions to Collier, I'd recommend the performance of "Hideaway" for the Paste Magazine channel where he arranges his song for 6 vocalist/instrumentalists (including himself) doing double duty.

I would have thought the microtonal shifts were a party trick, but they are a revelation. When I heard Moon River I did not realize there were the shifts, I just kept thinking WTF am I hearing?! He understands vibration and human perception in ways that are revolutionary.
I think you're exactly right John (around 13:52) where you say the song starts to darken... starting with "What can I give him..."... it makes the final "Give my heart" so powerful, it's like it's overcoming the darkness.
Some jazz teacher told me about music once, you can hear it, feel it, see it or know it. Jacob knows it.

I think you’d get a kick out of Jacob’s live BBC Proms rendition of his own composition ‘In the Real Early Morning’ with the Metropole Orkest. Single voice, celesta and a lovely orchestral arrangement.
Some of my favourites by him include 'Fascinating Rythmn', 'The Christmas Song', 'The Flintstones' and 'In The Real Early Morning'. All of these just blow my mind.

I think I saw in an interview with Jacob that he started this song in A-428 when it was the "bleak midwinter", but in the later stages when the "sun comes out" he has modulated to A 440, so the key is still relatively the same, but it's tangibly brighter

Sorry if this is old news I know it’s a 2 year old video, but I wanted to clarify the microtonal key change a bit because I know you’ll appreciate it if you haven’t heard the details yet!! The way he does it has more to do with the reason we use “equal” temperament vs “just.” As I’m sure you already know, we use equal temperament as a compromise, trading in-tune chords for the ability to have all keys and chords intervalically equivalent. When Jacob modulates to G half sharp, he does it by climbing a ladder of 4 chords that are sung *more* in tune than our usual equally-tempered notes. He does it entirely with his voice, no tape speed change involved!

It's utterly baffling when you hear/experience something you do/don't understand and can't explain. This is the essence of Jacob Collier's musical genius. I'm with you in every video you do reviewing Jacob's songs.
Jacob's singing truly requires full range dynamic speakers to perceive to the fullest every harmony his genius is creating.
Fantastic analysis! One other astonishing aspect of this song happens between 8:37 and 8:54 where he seamlessly modulates to the key of G-half-sharp in the last chord, singing the next few lines 50 cents 'out of tune'. He somehow brings out the fabulous brightness of that microtonal shift while making it look effortless.

While it absconds clandestinely to collect itself, it turns on the waterworks as a distraction.

I love the fact that you have the vulnerability to feel this as deeply as it deserves to be felt. There is some(no)thing beneath the technical brilliance, the harmonic inventiveness, the microtonal shenanigans, the mastery of polyrhythm,and timbre and the extraordinary meta-awareness of the relationship between all these aspects of musical invention. That nameless brilliance is what illuminates the best of Jacob Collier, and indeed all great art. It is the closest thing i have ever encountered to what humans like to call 'god'

Mind blowing. I have always loved the plaintive nature of In the bleak midwinter but Jacob stretches and morphs sound, incredulity and soul as the reinvents this beautiful classic. About the microtonal shift (as explained by Jacob himself in a master class you can find here on YT): What Jacob is doing is he's exploiting the differences between just intonation and equal temperament to smooth out that quarter-tone modulation. Each of the four chords in the transition is in just intonation, and shifts the key up by a few cents relative to the equal-tempered note, until you reach 50 cents for the landing chord.

One of my closest friends of 65 years, Jim Keltner, studied with Freddie Gruber when we were teenagers-in the early ‘60s! Freddie sold me my first set of vibes at Barry Grasmueck’s (?) music store in Pasadena, CA! I remained a vibist, studying with Bobby Hutcherson for a year, and performing on vibes just a couple of years till I heard Bill Evans on “Kind Of Blue”! From then on I have been a jazz pianist-composer! Keltner and I are still close friends-both musically and personally...
I showed up for my lesson at Freddie’s to find Jim Keltner and Mitch Mitchell sitting in the drum room, Freddie had me go through my lesson for both of them. We all ended up at Roger Linn’s house, the Linn drum machine had just come out. Pretty amazing night for me at 19!
John, we must be near the same age then! I turned 80 on 10-10-2022. I rank Jim as a studio drummer in the top 5 if not overall number 1. (And You DO know Jim is the drummer on “Josie” on Steely Dan’s Aja album, right?
Keltner has been on over 150 Gold albums and at least 75 Platinum! I was upstairs in his home studio after dinner and a lot of those presentation albums were on the walls!
Jim has never considered himself a “jazz” drummer, but he HAS done jazz recordings-the last of which was with Brad Meldhau, so-as I’ve always believed-he’s always been a jazz drummer, but he’s made his living in commercial and pop studio work.
