The good news is he tells everyone exactly how he did everything. Search for his logic session review on this song. He even gives his sister credit for the last high note, to show how much he dives into details. By the way, this whole thing took him a week from conception to completed video.

I love that session. I became a musician when I was like 8 years old. And as much as I'm blown away by what I notice and recognize in Jacob's music, when he talks about what else he's doing, I realize *I know nothing*. It is inspiring, literally awesome, and terrifying how someone can understand both music and emotion as keenly as Jacob does.

You have to cry at the end to marvel that this not ever normally humanly attainable or possible. The amount of sheer born brilliance and advanced harmonic knowledge isn’t something you’ll see this life time, and Jacob Collier is a gem.

I don't really understand music the way musicians do. Jacob's music isn't something I'd regularly listen to. But I'm addicted to watching him explain his music or interact with other musicians, and reaction videos like this one, because I have enough empathy for this to give me a similar experience, albeit indirectly. And this video does this really really well.

My favourite line of Jacob's in his making-of video is 'we're entering in to the key of D half sharp'. It's like watching a space mission to mars.

My reaction to first hearing Jacob was similar. I sat in stunned silence with either a big grin on my face or wiping away tears. The first piece I heard Jacob sing is the Flintstones theme which you should check out. It totally blew my mind. He is truly a once in a lifetime (or longer) talent.
Oh also, the part where you mention his crazy inventive key changes. He goes from G to G half sharp. His absolute pitch and intonation is just bewildering.
I remember the first time I watch his video. Utter disbelief of the sheer skill and giddiness over all the mind blowing details. That last big swell at the end giving me a full body chill and then that ending chord which had me sobbing uncontrollably. It happened again as I was watching your video. Never have a piece of music touched me so deeply. The emotional depth in his recording are only rivaled by Randy Newman's movie scores. Amazing! 😁🥲🤯

Did you know he was 17 years old when he did this ( He's 26 now ) It won a Grammy. He also did the video. Check out his " Logic Session Breakdown " ( On You Tube ) You'll be surprised that he laid down every voice himself manually. Truly amazing talent. A comment from Quincy Jones on Jacob is interesting, " If this is the way music is going, I think we're in good hands " Probably a Master Musician talking about an emerging Musical God. We wait and see as he's only just turned 26. Just hope he doesn't dry up.

In this long sustain note in the background, he goes up like 1 semitone, gradually, over the course of 10s of seconds, with 0 editing.
I can't even begin to comprehend how that's possible. We're so attuned to our piano-scale ears, just slowly and in a controlled way moving microtonally like that just melts my brain.

The musicality is obviously the glaring element of Jacobs music but sometimes I think the emotional depth is overlooked so thank you for highlighting it. My own reaction the first time I saw (& more importantly heard) this song was so much like yours. Now I find myself simply grinning out of the sheer joy of it. What a privilege to witness such talent and achievement!
I think that's what makes it extremely upsetting to read comments saying that "Jacob just tries to add too many extensions" or "He's being a tryhard"... Watching the logic sessions- the emotions he puts into his songs- shows all the proof needed to debunk those claims.

"Don't You Know" Snarky Puppy ft Jacob Collier is a masterpiece.
Just to bring him back to being a human (but still a very very talented human)
he records in software and lip syncs for the video (so he's allowed to record in smaller bits, shift the recordings around for timing, sometimes pitch up one or two cents (though it's incredible how precise he gets it still))
the very high voice at the end was actually his sister
for the very low notes he uses an octave pedal
and now to bring him back to being from another planet

Yes, I mean it's one thing to be a master harmonizer/reharmonizer as Jacob already is in A-440/equal temp, but to play with shifting *polychromaticism* and temperament colors is beyond this solar system. Ant to use it so effectively, emotionally . . . Shivers down my spine, every time.

One of my favourite things about watching a jacob collier reaction is, in a sort of oddly almost sadistic way, seeing a professional musician be like "OK this is pretty coo-- hey what the hell man, fuck my entire career I guess" but in a way that isn't bitter, just awestruck and proud and enthusiastic and inspired by the sheer musicality and genius

When you are a teacher, you sit down and realise that you know nothing... Nothing is true, you have to learn again, a new way to look at this language which is music... It really hits you. I loved your reaction
John, about the voice sync, Jacob likes to show his recording process. He sometimes do 3h broadcasts explaining it and recording. It is amazing. He has the ability of record voices very fast, using Logic with scary skills. And the tempo is always something that blows my mind. Actually, he works with dynamic, tempo, pitch and timbre at the same time, as no other human before.

The beginning of that constellation of notes sounds like the voices of every human that has ever existed. I'm transfixed.
Jacob Collier's "Moon River" is a transcendent piece of music I revisit over and over. You feel as if you've been lifted into a musical hyperspace where your human senses are simply inadequate, you're overwhelmed and delighted at the same time. I'm glad you shared the same sense of awe that I did.
I don’t know if you’ve watched any of his breakdowns or live recording sessions but he doesn’t record very much in one go, normally 1 or two bars for everything that isn’t the lead vocal and he records the same snippet over and over again till he gets something he likes which is why there are so many small runs and intricate details. That’s also how he gets everything so perfectly in sync
I've never seen a reaction video where the person actually gets how beautiful the music is on a spiritual level. This song in my opinion is his Magnum Opus so far. But some other great tunes are his arrangements of "You and I", "All night Long", and "Hideaway". If you want something that is lyrically moving and not as harmonic; his original, "In the Real Early Morning" is a great listen. I am your newest subscriber and I cant wait to watch more from you!

I'm not entirely convinced Collier is human. His ability to evoke a profound emotional reaction through chord changes is unlike anything I've ever heard.

I’ve seen several trained musicians reviewing JCs work and it’s very interesting. Most of them feel overwhelmed by his music, but also a little sad that we are like you said, from different planets.
You are the first trained musician that I’ve seen react to him and oh it’s such a joy. You react like musicians react. You are not only surprised about this unusual music, you actually can understand to some extend what he’s doing. If you go a listen to his lectures or a great interview he does does with June Lee, you will freak out even more. He is the prodigy of our time. Books will be written about him.
Also, there’s an amazing 30 min documentary about the time he went to MIT and knocked off the socks off all the cool music nerds 👍. "imagination off the charts"
I’m a trained singer , pianist who went to Juilliard on a Brass instr…I understand Jacobs harmonic concepts and know to do sophisticated re-harms…and having said that….what Planet is Jacob from? It def ain’t Earth…if you go to the Logic sessions…it will even blow u away more …dbl , triple sheesh!!!

The Logic Pro software developers actually increased number of tracks on the software because Jacob complained/requested for more as it was limiting.
Plus the huge musical household education he got and self taught himself. He could hear a lot before he could play stuff. His story is out there told by him in videos.
When Quincy Jones found him he was already Jacob (with 15 i think) it was when he uploaded the Flintstones if I’m not mistaken.
His earliest works are already truly remarkable. Flintstones is some sort of sparkling fireworks, but I don‘t listen to it that often. But listen to his cover of „Close to you“. It‘s grand.
Think he was 19 at the time and the track that Quincy heard was 'don't you worry about a thing'
John, your reaction to Jacob has been the same as mine was when I first became aware of him a year or so ago. I’ve been a singer and music lover all my life and he rocked my world. It was like experiencing a new and undiscovered culture or cuisine that few others had ever experienced. It was like a Lewis and Clark expedition through the overwhelming beauty and awesomeness of sonic stimulation. I highly encourage you to check out his many other video’s, which are all very unique. He is a multi-instrumentalist as well and plays everything very well. Try out his arrangement of the Lionel Richie tune “All Night Long”. Whatever you do, keep watching his videos and commenting. Fully understand and emphathise with your response. I was crying profusely at the sheer beauty of this arrangement when it first hit the public. I've met Jacob on a couple of occasions over the years, first meeting him in 2013 at a Take 6 concert where he and the guys first linked up in person. I learned so much from him and his mother Suzie in just a few minutes. Every time I've seen him since, he remembers my name and I am not a person of public significance... but he is that humble yet that profound that his achievements make me swell with pride to have met him and breathed the same air as him. Moon River is one of my favourites from when Andy Williams covered it when I was young; I'm now nearly 58 years old. Meeting musicians like Jacob, Take 6, The Aeolians, Accent and Sam Robson has made me value the times I am blessed to be living in with regards to the expanding frontiers these people bring to Vocal Music. I croak in tune, but these musicians are a gift and I pray that they continue to bless our lives with the gravity of their prodigious talents the and their polymathical cerebrums serve for our delight and wonderment. Yeah, he's just that good. His songs and arrangements to this day brings tears to my eyes.
He's probably the foremost musical genius of his age. I mean, I'll just throw microtonality, just intonation and tuning systems out there, because this song in particular has a lot of hidden gems in there.
Jacob composes using a program called ”Logic”. This song alone he himself professed took over 1200 lines;
Yes, that means 1200+ individual parts recorded.
The depth and breadth of his genius, his chord substitutions/alterations at some level scares me as much as it inspires me. I hope people from his world live a long time, because I’ll be enjoying his creations for the remainder of my life in hopes I can one day catch half of what he is puttin’ down.

I was so glad to see such an emotional reaction to this monumental work of Jacob Collier. The first time I heard this I cried, it was so beautiful. Now I have heard it 6 or 7 times, and I still tear and choke up. I can't watch it with anyone else in the room. I'd be too embarrassed. Be proud of your honest emotion. Anyone who has any taste for music hears an absolute work of art.

This reaction was the most genuine and humble I've seen on youtube. Makes me shiver. I have had a really similar experience listening to Jacob Collier - Hallelujah. Unearthly is an understatement.
I'll add to the votes for "In the Real Early Morning" - Live BBC Proms version - for various reasons - it is his own composition, he performs it, he arranged the orchestral parts, and you can hear a pin drop in the hall - he has that kind of control over the audience, and yes, you will tear up again!

The way he manipulates his voice like an instrument and uses each tool in his voice like a separate instrument is why he’s a genius. The way he pulls and tugs the pulse and colors of the music bending them to his will, it’s just perfect. That’s why we all feel like children in an amusement park so torn and giddy when listening to his music. U have to go back and watch them over and over and analyze to get the full experience
Extremely emotional watching you watch Jacob Collier. Your awe and appreciation of his musicality and genius is inspiring in itself.
To me Jacob reaches purely majestic musical moments at times when he's at his quietest. He's able to leave his technical genius out the door and just express pure emotion in the form of music... I think as I get older, I start to appreciate more objectively and from a more realized space. And seeing Jacob's kind of talent makes me feel both saddened by my obsolescence (and mediocrity), *and* encouraged and delighted at knowing new delights are still coming. It's a heartbreakingly amazing experience.

Ok, I kept "liking" until I realized how long it would take to "like" them all (but two or three who don't seen to get it). I decided to add my comment here for the person who said they were "despondent" without new and recent comments. I am 73 years old and was thinking "this is probably a Frank Sinantra kinda guy" when it was reccomended to me, which would have been fine. Oh my God. Is this young man for real?? Books, Art, and Music that move one to tears are the things that last for posterity, like Mozart, Bach, etc. This stuff witll live forever as above and betound genuis.
When I discovered Jacob my first thought was, damn, I wish I could share this with someone that can really appreciate and understand how marvelous is this arrangement, how crazy genius is this guy, someone that can open their eyes wide as I did after every shift, inner joke, chromatic harmony, hidden treasures Jacob has carefully placed on his arrangements (like that little wink in All Night Long with Jacksons Five ABC and the circle of fifths 😂)... but nop, there is no one nearby that can get this monstrous talent, but then I found you, John. Jumped into the DEEEEEP end with this one, John. This is possibly one of the most incredible arrangements of this tune and the fact that Jacob does all this stuff by himself in a room is mind-blowing in the least. His work using live-looping, instruments, and his keyboard skills alone are worthy of the genius hallmark. Jacob's ear and mind and concept of harmony and theory are beyond anyone else living and possibly anyone in the history of mankind. Truly a gift to humanity and I can't wait to hear what he does next.

When I first tried to listen to Moon River I only got about a minute in and had to stop. I then took time to watch videos of him at MIT, USC and other workshops to understand a little about how he thinks and feels music. I was then able to watch and listen to Moon River. Just like you, I cried. The young man is brilliant!!

Just watched 'Fix' and am following it up with this. He is unbelievably talented, as if he were music embodied in human form. Just listening to the first video, then the bell tones in this, I strongly suspected (especially from how he was the top of his range) he'd trained/sung as a treble here in the UK - true, but his family is also incredibly musical - they sang Bach chorales for fun & he says Benjamin Britten shaped his understanding of harmony. He is just having so much fun playing, and aren't we the lucky ones - it's absolutely glorious.

In all honesty, remember Back to the Future when the guy backstage was blown away and got on the phone and said, listen to this!, well, I think we're experiencing a guy who has traveled back in time and sharing music from the future. But if you asked me in 1985 what music would sound like in 2021, this is what I would want.
There are so many innovations happening all at once in his music, that he's actually going to transform music forever. This is a major catalyst. As a musician I'm extremely overwhelmed. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience this.

I’ve heard this probably a dozen times and even shown it to a couple people, but your raw response, along with your clear understanding of how genius it is, allowed me to hear this song for the first time again. I laughed at each shocked reaction, because it really is mind blowing. I got choked up when you did, because it really is emotionally overwhelming. This is why I always look up new reaction videos of Jacob - to see someone else experience the same sense of wonder I got when hearing his songs for the first time. Your videos are absolutely some of the best ones in that regard. Given your humbleness, musical knowledge and ableness to pick up on interesting details, I'd happily watch several hours of you listening to music! Interesting how the times have changed, a couple of years ago I'd never believe that watching someone else listening to music would be a good way of spending your time... Regardless, I hold Jacob as someone that will go down in the history books among the biggest names in music. Not only is he a brilliant musician, he's an amazing teacher (hours of material available on youtube) and has this buddhistic and egoless outlook on life, which I both share and admire. The two songs you've now reacted to contain so much information and emotion, but it's only the tip of the iceberg of his abilities. I hope you'll post more reactions of him in the future. Many will recommend 'All Night Long' but that one's been done so many times lately, I think a "smarter" and possibly more enjoyable moment would be if you listened to his original song 'In The Real Early Morning', here beautifully adapted for the orchestra Metropole Orkest (featuring Jacob's mom Susie on violin!). 1. As others have said, really appreciate reaction from someone who can value and understand what Jacob is all about
2. I actually thought that the format of reacting without interruption and then adding pauses later to satisfy the algorithm or whatever wasn't a bad way to go
3. If you really didn't go off and watch every single video from Jacob after the "Fix You" reaction, then I am in awe; when I discovered Jacob, I was incapable of holding back
4. Suggestions for next reaction: Flintstones, All Night Long, Make Me Cry (Mahogany Session), or anything else ;-)

"He understands sound at a profound level" is probably the best comment yet about Jacob. Outstanding reaction. There is a logic session video he did (over 90 minutes) and a transcription video that really shows the chords and pitch center changes he does throughout this song. Even if you don't watch them for reactions, they are definitely worth the watch just to help understand all the complexities.
