I have spent 25 years trying to describe how I wanted my hair to other people. Then I realized that If I wanted it done how I want it, I just needed to teach myself how to cut my own hair. My hair has been on point ever since :) Also, I now get free haircuts for life! Worth a try maybe?
    Great vid :)

I tried cutting my own hair for the first time when i was in 4th grade... I was going for the side swept emo hair with all those layers? Yyyeah. all I can say is that I've definitely grown since then!! Lmao! But yes, cutting your own hair definitely has its benefits!!

I found this great stylist who always gave me amazing haircuts, but she was also real expensive and one time I was like "oh I just need a trim, I'll run across to Supercuts. It'll be okay" Wrong. I had these great layers from the lady before and then after supercuts, it was clearly 3 layers of hair. I was like a cake. It was awful.

Unfortunately in Cosmetology school they only teach you how to pass State Board and Learn in the Real world about cuts, sad but true, everyone starts out someway or another but it's also about COMMUNICATION talk to your stylist, show them pictures, tell them what you don't like about certain styles. Especially for my color people, tell them all about your hair, trust me there will be no regrets, #Hairstylist

Had a similar SuperCuts experience and getting layers cut! I have pretty thick hair so when the hairdresser cut the top layer and let it fall, she just said "oh where'd it go" she tried to laugh it off, I did too, but she looked concerned as to where she just cut hair from. It came out totally uneven.

To generalize this as don't go to Supercuts video isn't fair. I manage and work as a stylist at a very good Supercuts salon, not an Academy. Hair Stylist Academy is for New to the company stylist who go through training before taking paying guests. I am sorry you had a bad experience but I can attest not all Supercuts are bad!

    FUCK SUPERCUTS.
I went in there (first mistake) to get my haircut. Now, cutting ethnic hair is not the same as cutting white hair. So I asked if they could cut my kind of hair to which they replied, "of course!". So I sat in the chair (second mistake) and the lady tried combing through my hair....with a comb...my 5-6 millimeter long hair. Long story short, she fucked up my hair and it looked like we were off roading while she lined my hair up. I didn't leave the house for about a week.

I have a Korean friend who knows and only gets hers. It by stylists who specializes in her hair type. She told me going to an Asian hair salon is one of the few things she splurges on because if she goes to a regular salon they will screw it up.

One time, I decided I wanted "side bangs" or whatever and I'm not even kidding, the second she snipped the first strand I started freaking out and saying things like, "Ah no never mind abort this mission, etc." So I just had one singular strand of hair that was slightly shorter than the rest of my hair for awhile. It was super not embarrassing.

Of course you will get the bad haircut from some hairdressing student, because it is a STUDENT ))) Anyway I am a hairdresser too and the funniest thing is that if you are the hairdresser with short hair - you can*t cut your own hair unfortunately(personally I failed) and I had SOO many troubles with my own haircuts from other hairdressers... And cried few times as well, but the thing is - you need to find only one hairdresser which one you will like and stick to it !

I wanted to get a pretty big chunk of hair cut off (like boob length to bob right below ears) and then have that fade from black on top to aquamarine on bottom (an ombre if you will). I went to this place in the mall that a friend had recommended me called Lords and Ladies. The hairdresser I got seemed pretty nice but she was having a hard time understanding what I was trying to ask her even though I didn't think it was really that hard at all. First mistake she made was doing the color before the cut, which I know is "standard practice" for some fucking reason but the way she was doing it was that it looked like she was starting the colored part below where I wanted it cut (I was right) but I assumed it was some hairdresser thing and it was actually gonna be much higher so I didn't say anything. Then she starts the cut and she gave me SUCH a hard time about the length, which actually happens to me almost every time I get my hair cut. I kept saying I wanted it very short and she was like "are you SURE though?? that's really short! Let me just cut it to this length and you can tell me if you want it shorter!!!" which is fucking aggravating cuz I know what I want but I'm too nice to snap at people. So she did that and I told her to go shorter THREE times and it still was longer than I wanted but if she went shorter it would've cut the very little bit of color left off. The biggest kicker though: it costed me FOUR HUNDRED FUCKING DOLLARS when I went to the register. So I left a skathing review and never went back

Alright, this didn't happen to me but it happened to my younger sister. She was in 4th grade and she, too, wanted layers. She went to JC Penney's salon. She went in with her hair down past her shoulders and walked out with a bizarre bowl cut. I can't even describe it correctly. Short all the way around with TONS of layers making it even shorter. My poor sister had a tough enough time having to wear round glasses. Add this haircut and she aged 75 years.

Not a bad hair cut but a bad hair dye story, I went to a beauty academy and asked for my hair to be blonde. My hair was long like down to my butt all 1 length. Long story short 4 hours later. All my clothes I wore into the place were ruined with dye and I ended up walking out with pink hair, a full fringe and shoulder length hair.

The lady that used to cut my hair doesn't know how to measure, I'm pretty sure. I donated my hair and when I went in I said I wanted to give 10 inches and she told me that her comb was 5 inches long so she'll measure out 2 comb lengths. When she tied it off it was really short, like just below my ears and I was like, are you sure that's 10, when I measured it at home it was a lot longer, almost to my shoulders, but she insisted. So she cut it off and my hair looked terrible! Going from hair that's down to your butt to hair that is really short is not a fun thing it's a shock. So I cried. When I got home and measured it was 15 inches, a lot longer than 10! In the end it went to kids with cancer, but I looked like a weirdo, since, to keep all the length I asked for a not styled at all cut.

When I was in fourth grade, my father took me to the barber, who I don't particularly care for, but I was used to being sheperded into the establishment on a regular basis. It was boring, there were only magazines for good ole hunting equipment and how to take care of your truck, and I knew that I'd be bored, so I brought my gameboy. As I sat around minding my own business playing the game, my father notifies me that its in fact my turn to get a cut. So I get into the barber's chair, and my dad asks me whether I want a cut like the guy who had just walked out. Mind you, I wasn't paying any attention at all, I was in the middle of the Elite Four, and whatever I could do to speed up the process and get back to playing was what I was going to do.
My dad warns me that it'll be short, to which I think, yay, that means I won't have to come back for a little while longer. Then the barber pulls out a contraption that I've seen him use before for the back of my hair, and just runs it across from the front to back and buzzes of a fifth of my hair. I am shocked. I tell him to put it back, because I don't want it that short, and he says he can't do anything about it now except cut the rest of it the same length. And so he continues to give me a buzz cut while I openly weep in the barber chair, and my father awkwardly laughs telling me its going to be fine and grow back. That was not a fun day.

When I was a child I was taken to this place called "The Cutting Cabin" (it was a cabin style building with logs and everything). I had butt-length hair which was just going to be trimmed… came out with basically a diagonal line of hair with a slope of about 3 inches (noticeable). My mom took me somewhere else to fix it in the same afternoon.

When I was 10 my sister wanted to play "barbie barbershop" which I excitedly agreed to (I loved barbie at the time). Twenty minutes later I had only a few chunks of hair in the back, half inch straight across bangs, and "kick me" written on my forehead in sharpie.

In 4th grade I wanted to get my hair cut shoulder-length. My hair dresser cut my hair up to my ears. I held it together in the salon but I had quite the tantrum when I got home and I ended up wearing my hair with a bandana on it to cover the terrible haircut for probably about 6 months until it grew out some. I am now forever afraid of hairstylists tbh and basically only ever get a trim whenever I go now.

When I wanted to switch to purple hair, my stylist was all for it and all the other stylists were so excited. Instead of processing my dark hair, she put some "glaze" on it, spent 5 hours trying, and all I had was kind of a brown/red color in streaks. I held it together until another stylist had the nerve to say, "oh my god, purple looks so good on you!" I sobbed and still had to shell out almost $200 because of how much "dye" she used. Never again.
Took my new stylist 2 hours and $100 to do my whole head...good times.

You know how when your family or friends "have a friend that cuts hair" so they pressure you into supporting their "friend who cuts hair" and that "friend who cuts hair" is a poser? Yeah, this lady just grabbed my swoop bangs and chopped them off without asking what I wanted, so I had too short straight bangs for a while, and people were looking at me weird b/c was I trying to go for Spock or was I just appropriating Asian culture?

I've tried to explain my wishes to hairdressers using words. Using pictures. Using performance art. The only thing I haven't tried is singing them broadway songs.
They ALWAYS end up doing it differently. At the salon I go to nowadays, I always get the same girl who, in the beginning, would even get into arguments with me about how she doesn't like my ideas. But by now, we're getting around. Kind of. I only ever go to have my very ends trimmed.

Yeeah, I was fourteen and trying to grow out these awful bangs that may have looked cute when I was little, but definitely didn't anymore. I asked the lady to just trim the hair but told her a few times to not cut the bangs at all, because I was trying to grow them out. She turns me around when she finished and I see that in fact she did cut my bangs and made me lose almost all the progress I'd gained. I kept a straight face when there, but as soon I was gone I just sat in the bathroom and cried. I feel your pain.

i work at supercuts and i know it can be bad. they hire young and insecure stylists because they are easy to take advantage of. they send you to a clss for a week to learn their fucked up way of cutting which is extremely non ergonomical and bullshit. luckily my manager was like, look just do it their way in class and when u get on th floor, do it your way. they pretty much tilor cutting so that unexperienced stylists can do it, but ive been in high end salons for years so i do my own thing. only shitter is, im giving haircuts with my previous $80 a cut quality for $17. i only came back so i can rebuild my speed after a 2 yer maternity leave.

On more than one occasion I have asked for a bang trim, and the stylist gave me "versatile" mini bangs underneath my regular long bangs...my hair is incredibly thick and wavy so both times I left looking like I got drunk and cut my own hair. It's just the terrifying moment where you want to slow-mo shout NOOO but you can't for some reason...I actually gave up on stylists and cut my hair myself now. I think I do a pretty good job. And it's free!

One of my friends used to wear his hair long, like about shoulder+ length. I liked that, and tried it too. Usually I wear it short, still do vecause I later found my hair does not like being long. It clumps into locks and just is gross. But it was down near my nech at this point, making good progress, but its getting untidy. So we go for a slight trim at the place across the road from where we normally went and got sorted.
The destruction was slow. Laborious. Tedious. Excruciating. For over an hour they trimmed and pruned my blossoming mullet and rock locks, until it was shorter than I'd gotten it cut before I decided to grow it long. I was what, about 14?
Tears were shed. I wouldn't call them manly tears, but tears were shed.
And then there's the time they made me bleed with razor burn getting the back of the neck and my 'whorls' to behave.

I've never had a bad hair cutting experience at an actual salon, but my grandmother cut my hair once and it was terrible. I'm a guy and as far as my memory goes back I've always felt like I'm supposed to have long hair, when I was like 12 my mum finally let me grow it out. Twoish years later it had grown past my shoulders and I loved it. One day I had the grand idea to braid it in two braids and use rubber bands to tie them off with. The bands got stuck, so I asked my Gram to cut the bands out, instead she cut above the band cutting my hair off. She then told me she could "fix" it so I wet my hair and she began cutting. She cut it all one length right under my ear, cut bangs like an inch and a half above my eye brows that stretched past the top of my ears and then decided to give me "layers" by putting slants like one of these things '/' on the sides of my head. I then had to go to a family gathering right after and people who I didn't see for a while didn't recognize me and the ones that did laughed once they saw me and continued to die laughing as they walked away. When we got home my Gram felt bad and somehow managed to convince me she could "fix" that disaster. She didn't. people at school always picked on me for being the gay guy with the long blonde hair, but when I came into school with that lovely haircut all the people that made fun of me for having long hair said that I shouldn't have cut it and left it long. I don't trust anyone with my hair now, so I cut it myself & if it gets fucked up it's my own fault and I'm okay with that.

I so feel you right now. This has nothing to do with hair cuts but earlier today I happened to go off on one of the people I work with. We kept saying crap back and forth to the point where I, being the emotional person I am, started crying because she took it too far. So in the end I got her keys and broke this owl hand sanitizer rubber thing off her key chain. Long story short, I started a fight, she made me cry and now I'm paying her $5.

I went to Great Clips and asked them to take the bulk out of my sideburns because they were getting poofy. The lady gave me tracks on both sides of my head.
I didnt notice them in the salon's light, but when i got home and showered, i realized all these weird lines of the side of my hair!
I went back and they tried to fix it, but you could still see faint lines.
At least I didnt cry lolololol aw ava.

I have a phobia of hair cuts and have never gotten one I liked until 3 weeks ago. It's really worth it to do your research and find the person you want to cut your hair. If you don't want a particular person to do it, the don't let them do it. That's my new rule for life.

***** I have curly hair and it just needs to be cut in a particular way or else it won't sit properly. It's cut dry, then wet, then dried again. If you like the way you cut it though, that's great. A really great stylist however will make sure it's healthy and looks good. I just had to let go. And I'm sorry if you suffer with panic attacks, I do too x

So I was in my schools production of Robin Hood and I got the role of friar Tuck. I was happy until my drama teacher told me that I had to cut my hair like a friar. That means completely bald on the top with a circle of long hair around it. Needless to say I wore a lot of hats.

My hair is now down below my bottom. But in 4th grade my parents thought it was a perfect idea to give me a pixie cut. Now I would have been fine with this if I had not been half asleep coming back from a trip. Sure it only took me a few years to grow my hair out but ... I was asleep and lost My hair

I bought my own hair clippers and started cutting my own hair. I've always hated going to a barber shop since I was little because they cut my soft, delicate, angel-kissed black locks off every time. My hair is completely different than how it use to be, so to avoid further disappointments and homicide attempts, I learned to do it my damn self.

the worst hair cut i got must of been about a year ago, I didn't know what the cut i got before was called so i went with a childhood favourite of mine which was 2 on the top one on the sides and a bit of a fringe. Not realising that the last time i got that i was maybe 10 or 11 I was pretty much almost bald for a solid 2 months. But on the upside didn't have to get my hair cut for a while.

I actually just got back from Supercuts lol. I think they're good if you're a guy and you want a short hair cut aka a simple, basic cut. I get my hair done short on the sides and longer on the top and I've never had a issue with length. I also don't get my hair styled.

I've had two traumatizing haircut experiences. The first was about 7 years ago. I'd had my bangs grown out since I was about 10 and I decided I wanted some side swept bangs. I went to the salon at Walmart and she literally cut about a 1/2 inch section short and called it bangs. I literally had just this tiny weird part of my hair hanging around the side of my forehead.
The second one was about 3 years ago. I decided I wanted to cut my hair super short. I went to a salon and told her i wanted a layered bob. she cut it into a bowl and layered it underneath. So it looked like a weird stacked bowl cut.
    I cried both times.

I got the worst haircut ever in December of last year. I have bangs that go above my eyes and I just wanted a trim. She cut them extremely too short and it looked like how Beyoncé currently has her bangs now. I had never felt so ugly in my life and I cried. Now I go to a new lady and haven't had a bad experience yet.

The length my hair's at right now is the length at which I wanted my pixie cut in the first place, but when I went for my appointment the dude who usually cuts my hair was busy so I was like okay nbd I'll just let this other person cut my hair. I think alarms in my head should have gone off when she asked me, "Do you like anime?"
Then she gave me the bowl cut I had when I was 4, and I almost started crying. Finally the dude who usually cuts my hair was like oh crap!! I'll fix that for you! He salvaged my hair, but it was way shorter than I wanted it, and it's taken me a year for me to actually be in the grow out phase rather than the mullet phase. Every time I tried to get the back trimmed, the stylist would just cut everything. What my pixie cut taught me: Trust no bitch.

I have a bad hairstyling story. I went to get my hair done for prom (only in grade 12 in Canada) and first several people asked me if it was my grade 8 grad which gave my self esteem a hit.
Then instead of doing the soft french braid leading into my hair at the side in waves like I asked for the stylist gave me a tight french braid that led into a pippy long stocking type pig tail (just one) out the side of my head. I told her I hated it and she tried to convince me it was great...
I left with it looking the way I wanted at least

Needless to say, those months just enhanced my awkward teenage self.

In our tiny town, we had a barber who everyone called, "Mick the Mower". (Not to his face I assume.) My fathers solution was that He take 'barbering' into his own hands, and bought some clippers, which he set to 1/4". For many years, my brother and I would have to endure the shame of siting on a footstool, clamped between Fathers knees, and getting sheared like sheep. As I was a child of the 60s, all I wanted was long hair, and when I got to full height, I started growing it out. Almost everyone did. I still wear it pretty long. And yes, many buckets of tears got shed over those years when I felt and looked, basically, bald.
    =Me.=

The next day i went to my grandmothers house where all of them were at and got made fun of for the whole hour i was there because it was REALLY uneven. Today is my 18 birthday and when i go to my birthday party one of them is most likely going to bring it up. I know what your going through and then some.

When I was a kid my family was moving to a new town and had to find a new place to go to for our haircuts. During that process we went to Walmart because my hair grows fast and my mom didn't want to wait anymore. The only thing we told the lady was to not give me a buzz cut, and the first thing she did was take an electric razor and take my hair from four inches down to a half inch. Boy that was perfect...

Picture it, High School, 2007, My mother thought my hair was too thick, and my older brother talked my mother into shaving from right over my ear around the back to the other ear all the way down. It was as short as could be and then the hair on top of my head came down pat my neck. I dont know how but it made my hair look stringy as fuck, and it was just an all around bad, thing, I almost cried....

Get this - I had damaged my hair being stupid with bleach. Like you I tend to think "it's just hair" so I opted to buzz it off. You can go to supercuts for THAT right? Wrong. The woman insisted on trying to "make it girly" by shaving the part in front of the ears to be pointed... and she didn't even manage to buzz it all evenly. How the fuck do you become a hair dresser and can't even buzz off hair? Also I told her 8 times "please don't do that" to pointing the sides that way. And she just was like "I'm going to do it" I almost slapped her. Never go there.

When I was around 7 I had hair down past my shoulders, my Mom took me for a hair cut and I came out looking like a boy..... a pixie cut it was called. All because my Mom couldn't deal with my hair. lol To be fair, her hair is very fine and not much of it so dealing with my thick coarse hair was beyond her. lol I've only ever gone back to get a hair cut fixed once. I lived with an asymmetrical hair cut for about a week and then went back and make her change it. :D I have to say, I don't remember ever crying over my hair though.

I have trichotillomania and every haircut is a bad haircut. No matter what anyone does to my hair I always pull it out and it always looks awful. And it doesn't help that some hairdressers are insensitive about trich. I swear if another stylist goes "Well why don't you just stop pulling out your hair?" I'm going to scream. My boyfriend is a hair stylist and I don't even let him touch my hair; I get so anxious about it. Trich makes simple hair matters so stressful and sometimes painful. I can't remember the last time I was satisfied with my hair or had an easy time with the haircut.

I went from hair dresser to hair dresser ever since I went for short hair. For some reason short hair on girls completely phases hair dressers... I went for Supercuts once... and came out with basically a buzz cut... An actual buzzcut. I said, "Pixie cut..." and apparently that meant to the hairdresser 'I am going to shave off most of her hair'. I just... tried to... like it... and I couldn't... I wore hats for a really long time. Now I only let our family hair dresser for the whole 22 years I've been alive cut my hair. He knows me and he knows how to not fuck things up.

I went to get my hair cut at a Visual Changes when I was in high school. I asked for a mohawk and the woman outright told me no??? and that it would look horrible on me??? She gave me this awful awful haircut. It was sort of like a mullet. With weird, wispy 1 inch bangs. I was so unhappy with it and the other hairdressers were so confused with what she'd done that they scheduled another haircut with a different hairdresser, free of charge. (I looked super cute with the mohawk, btw.)
