You may notice when you initially make the switch, you’ll lose some of the old soil roots (they may get soft and mushy) but chances are you’ll develop some new and white water roots as long as your stem is still healthy and has no rot. For my plants in water I use dynagro foliage pro liquid fertilizer once a month and replace water once a week. Have you tried growing a monstera in water?
Oh, that must have been what happened to mine. Not all the roots got mushy and smelly, and most of them were white before i stuck it back in dirt. Thank you Krystal 🫡
I have a monstera in water right now, but I've never had one before. It's a start from someone who got it from someone else and didn't want it. It has 2 leaves, one seems like it might die though. I have no idea if it has a node, hopefully it will grow!
I almost killed my monstera by overwatering. The roots were rotten! I cut them off and put her in the water. It really saved her. After 3 months I transplanted her to soil again and she is doing great.
What if it’s a baby and you don’t get all the soul off the roots? I want to transfer to pon so I put it in water but it’s still a baby so I didn’t get all the soil off? Is that okay
water when the it needs it they show it by droopy leaves or stick your finger in the oil does it feel bone dry its time to water does it feel damp no need to ( round about 2 inch dry then you can water)
Watching your videos gave me the courage to try having a plant. I got a baby rubber plant in February. It has new growth!!! I'm working on finally using the raised flower bed I made over a year ago. Rescued a peace lily and an orchid. Your videos have helped me gain so much confidence and helped me find love in this new hobby.
Hi...I did the same thing...one part in the bathroom...and is growing so fast...I would never buy another one..they live better in water...Thanks for sharing..
@@kaylaholbrook3227 I simply use a jug big enough. That's all really. Aber I make sure the level of water ist not too low or high, simply fir the roots to swim. Edit: for really big plants i use a normal bucket. The leaves rest in the rim around
I've been able to successfully raise clippings a friend gave me in water, and I learned how to do so with your videos! 😊 I also rescued another plant that was super discounted at a 99cent store - they were getting rid of it from Mother's Day. I've also nursed that baby back to health and it's given me two new, beautiful leaves 💖
I meeeeaaan not to toot my own horn but my monstera has been going strong for almost 2 years! She had a little scare because I lost heat for 2 days in the New England winter last year but she’s coming back. I will say, I think it is very helpful that I haven’t gotten any pests (knock on wood) as I would die since she’s my favorite one I have!! 🥰 (don’t tell my other plants I said that)
It’s so fascinating how they can’t be in a pot of soil with a lot of water & survive, but the roots can be completely submerged in water, & not experience the effects of over watering. That shit blows my mind
My first plant was a Monstera! I didn’t even know what it was (or how much I’d LOVE them!) then I researched & found out everything about them. Mine grew so big too but I had to leave that baby at my mothers when I moved out:( Swiss Cheese plants are my favorite plant!
I hate thrips because it takes so long to notice them sometimes because they’re SO small! You really have to look. Aphids or mealy hugs are easy to see, thrips hard until you notice your plants look really unhappy :/
I’m convinced they can live forever in water. I had one propagating for two years in water and it was thriving, and just last week I decided to pot it 😂.
So, does that mean that when you add the liquid fertilizer, it’s only left in the water for one week? Because you said you change the water every week, but add liquid fertilizer once a month. So does the plant sit in the fertilizer for one week? Do you dilute the fertilizer, or use it as directed?
A friend of mine only keeps monstera in her fish tank. They really love living in water. Right now I have a couple in dirt but once my tank is fully set up they are gonna live with the fishes
That’s how I saved mine from root rot. Then transferred to Pon. If you wanna grow anything just in water you can, but you need to introduce some hydroponic fertilizer after a while
I’m currently going through a rust fungus debacle with my montseras! And as I was pruning the infected leaves, I saw a mealy!!! Definitely one of my plants that is more prone to issues.
This's exactly what I needed. How did you treat "the pests"? What type of soil mix do you recommend for putting them back in the soil when they're ready?
I moved my monstera to water couple weeks ago, as I grow some pothos in water or moss, I wanted to try it. Somehow, she seems happier than in soil - I change water weekly, per your instructions, but it’s always rain water I collect + I add 1-2 drops of liquid fertiliser each time.
I killed my first one. Finally got another and figured a few things out and it finally has grown a new leaf on each stem. Goodness gracious they aren’t beginner friendly but it’s taught me a lot. I love Philos.
Monsteras are actually quite common to see in aquariums more then any other plant They usually sit on rocks or is tied to somethinf beside the endge of the glass
Is it true that when the plant is in water, rooting, that growth hormones are building up in the water? I heard...do not throw out all the water...just add water to the low water. Is it true?
Monsteras are beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but they do seem like quite a large, overwhelming commitment, and I question how they even got so popular as houseplants? I feel like the answer is as simple as “they became a fad at some point”. These things seem closer to trees and like something to have in your yard climbing up another tree or the side of your house or something - which I see everywhere in FL. Meanwhile I’ve seen videos of people having to cover an entire room in plastic like Dexter, at least two people needed to even move or handle the plant, cutting/breaking and tearing the pot away in pieces, butchering the aerial roots for aesthetics and to make it just slightly more manageable, or intentionally leaving plants WAY rootbound to keep them at an “ideal” size. I’m sorry that’s too much nonsense trying to force something that doesn’t fit. And just like you shouldn’t adopt an animal you don’t have space for, can’t commit to, etc. - you shouldn’t acquire a freaking tree or something that will easily outgrow you and your space and WILL eventually need to be planted in the ground when you have no intention or realistic plan of ever doing that. None of this is directed at Krystal, obviously.
I love monstera...they are such an amazing plant. I got one for myself for my bday...and he gave me a beautiful new leaf with even more fenestration on it. I love him so much ❤

They eventually get that big on their own. It takes about three years. And each year you will see more fenestrations in the leaves. My Monster as are about 6 years old. I see a lot more fenestrations in the middle of the leaves now.
I recently cut up my monsterra to correct how it was growing and I opted to water grow instead of putting in soil. I am simply astounded at the number of roots this has produced since making the switch!

I don't know anyone who had an infestation in my country

My monstera was given to me as a housewarming gift because it was an "easy beginner plant." Thank you so much for saying its not lol. I've had it almost 2 years now and I thought it was just me! My dramatic plant and I have been through it but its still alive 🙂
The only time my Monstera gave me issues is when the humidity was too low in the winter (caused leaf drop), and when we lived in a house where the windows didn't receive much light. Now they have South facing windows and a programmable humidifier. In the winter they sometimes send out aerial roots. I will place the root in a milk jug full of water. The plant will then create several roots to take up the moisture. That helps with leaf droop.
I moved mine to water. (But! I have that mini climbing type that you have to trellis. ) (maybe that’s the difference) but, Almost decimated the plant. On day 2 I ran to her to re-dirt it. Then it took a month of praying over her everyday to live . I cut the top to propagate because I wasent sure it would pull though. It did. Barely. Maybe my issue was placing back under grow light when roots went from dirt to water? Idk. But I’m terrified to touch it now.

Yes but when I placed it back in soil, it shocked the plant and the leaves became droopy.

I’ve moved mine to water too!! It looks so happy & I was worried about those mushy roots but what you said helps a lot!
