I am working on a documentary right meow and the B roll is definitely true I find you seem to always need more than what you think. Thank you for the tips on organization it is so crucial for a production of any kind to run smoothly. You are the best Simon it's great to see you grow as a human and a filmmaker who is also a human. Well may the Swartz be with you.
"All three of us: myself, Tarah, the co-director, and Ivan, the researcher, are three people with different ideas and different strengths all pushing the same direction and working simultaneously. I really enjoyed that kind of energy." My friend, that's not just energy. That's SYNERGY! Amazing work! Been following the channel for years and I can't wait to see what you guys cook up!
I love the way your background music doesn't drown out the dialogue, Simon. Something so many professionals get horribly wrong. Just one little example of your thoughtfulness and consideration. Thank you!
I can't recommend making a documentary enough, if you are a beginner. No cast, no crew necessary. Gear and travel included it cost me about 300 pounds to do. decided to go with a local history documentary project to start building my film making skills. I figured I could do it completely on my own, with camera and tripod only. It's very rough and ready, but I did it - a complete 4 episode, 4 hour documentary that took just under a year (Spring 2017 - Spring 2018). It was a really enjoyable experience, although I was glad to take a break at the end of it. I'm on my third local documentary project as I write, but am looking to increase collaboration on this one, so am giving myself a longer completion time.
Love hearing you talk about this! Making a documentary is something I really want to experiment with and give it a try. Great video as always, looking forward to the film!
I have been making documentaries for a long time and I recognize all of your struggles. I really appreciate the way you vocalize your experiences. Keep up the good work!
Great video. It's nice to hear as I am in the early stages of a few documentaries. Hearing about yours is great and good to know what to keep in mind for when I get to different stages.
Another great video, I loved the candid insights like 4:30. You have been a big inspiration to me in making the content for my channel. I keep coming back here for more advice every time.
Hey Simon! Very interesting! I've watched some of your videos when you were doing fiction, and I was doing fiction too (and really liked them). Now I´m starting with documentaries, and it's cool to see you're into that! Keep it up, you have talent. And share your documentary whenever you can, really want to check it out! All the best from Spain!
I suppose filming a documentary sometimes is like doing wedding photography. You have to be very prepared as you may not get another chance for another take, or if you do it won't be as authentic. Genuine behavior suddenly becoming scripted can turn sour. It has to be done more in real time. As well as working around the people you want to film, working around their day to day tasks without the feeling of getting in the way. I bet in some cases you feel obnoxious. It requires more patience but i have my hopes, you are good at what you do.
Hi Simon! I think it's time you rename your channel to SIMON CADE. :) I've been a fan of your channel for a few years now. And every time I look for your videos, I keep trying to look for your name on the list and forgetting that it's called something else.
Hey, been a viewer for a few years and would love to get into documentary making too. How do you find projects to work on? Just jumping into something and hoping there is a story there or something with more planning? Thanks
I made a 4 hour, 4 episode history documentary series which I uploaded onto RUclips: KAMAKURA - RISE AND FALL OF THE SHOGUNS. 200 dollars for the camcorder, no staff, no interviews, solo project, took 51 weeks.
I've made a documetary but any suggestions on how to get it out there for an audience or a way for producers to see it to help fund and take it further?
My personal opinion is that you need to be true and accurate when portraying someone. I'm sure it's hard once you get to know them. Maybe a good reason to have an editor who wasn't involved in filming.
@@UNDAMedia Personally I didn't enjoyed it properly as it was a assignment for my uni, so the script had to be modified several times to fit the teachers idea. Second the theme had to be about socio-cultural issues so it limited the amount of things we would talk about and felt more like a paid job in wich I had no interest vs a well done documentary made from passion. And most important I'm a DoP and editor, so the natural non-planned settings and lack of script would be something I'm not interested in working at.
I have a weird question.... looking at you.... Do you have you tongue stably on a roof of you your mouth? And do you mouth breathe often, more often than before? Maybe I'm wrong....buy maybe you need to check out mewing/orthotropics.... But maybe I'm wrong....you jaw doesn't seem to have developed improperly. ....this probably doesn't make sense to you, though.))))

Milanote is pretty cool, but I wish there was a way to precisely arrange the elements in a precise grid-like fashion.
