    I grew up with a tinfoil barb. He “Mikey” grew to 17.5 inches long. I could hand feed him, pet him gently, and at times I would feed him earthworms I’d find (12) after a good rainfall. He finally died after living to 19 years old. Mine might be an extreme but it’s not unusual for them to grow well beyond 12 inches.

  • @cmj20002

    I have two of the red fin typer and they are about 4" now. I had one that was very aggressive and it went on a killing rampage when I was at work. It killed a Ciclid a big cat fish and several others. I had 6 fist floating dead and my cat fish had it's skin ripped off. So they can be very aggressive if they are picked on by other fish.

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 лет назад

      Wow, I've never heard of them behaving that way, mine were the opposite!

    • @cmj20002
      @cmj20002 6 лет назад +1

      Me Either. This was a case of a smaller Ciclid picking on the barb and it finally went crazy and took care of the problem. It was just swimming around like nothing to see here. So after I got new fish I put the barb in a tank by itself, just didn't trust it.

    One of my albino tinfoil barbs died, they were a school of 10. They eat everything but after one die, the remaining ones don't eat much anymore. What do I do??

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  8 лет назад

      It could possibly be a disease in the tank. With a school of 9 one dying shouldn't bother them to the point of not eating; so check the current fish for any sign of disease and recall If the one that died had any sign of disease. With all diseases I usually first try a salt treatment and big water changes, if that doesn't work you'll have to figure out what disease it is and probably look for some meds.

    I have a tinfoil barb!
    He is in a 60 gallon aquarium with GloFish (2 danios, 5 tetras) 2 tiger barbs, a golden chinese algae eater, 4 corydoras, 3 hifin black skirts, 1 lone rosy barb and 2 rainbow sharks.
    I wish to give the danios, tiger barbs, and the rosy barb bigger schools.
    I also wish to give the tinfoil barb a monster tank with mates of his own species.
    My tinfoil barb is a gift from a friend who used to come to my school, then he had to move to another place.
    He along with the rosy barb, one of the rainbow sharks, the 3 hifin black skirts, and the tiger barbs were a gift.

      4. I suspect that he ate my danios.
      Yet, he will be greatly missed.
      Nowadays, I have:
      1 danio (Sunburst Orange)
      3 GloFish Tetras (1 Moonrise Pink, 2 Galactic Purple)
      3 Hi-fin Black Tetras
      4 corydoras (2 wild, 2 albino)
      1 rainbow shark
      1 tinfoil barb (who will be given away)

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 лет назад

      These guys as adults will make a 125g look tiny, so probably a max of 5

      @@dwsdarius thanks and are they plant safe?

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 лет назад

      They do dig through the substrate looking for leftover food which would be problematic in a planted tank so probably only tied plants like java fern, moss anubias etc.

      Tinfoil barbs can grow to quite large, up to 14 inch (35cm) in length

    When buying tinfoil barbs you need to buy at least 3 for a school. 1 is not going to be happy and with 2 they will be separated much of the time

    You better have battery operated tanks for emergency. they die in blackouts.

    You didn't suggest types of fish to keep with them ?
    Talked and talked about it, would actually be helpful if you were to suggest specific tank mates.
    Meanwhile you are keeping it with a much more aggressive fish ?
    Not very helpful at all. somewhat contradictory in fact....

      I said that they are great dither fish, and that they can get along with just about any fish as long as its not small enough to eat....shouldn't be too hard finding fish in that category! 😱

    My goldfish are more aggressive than these fish. I like them a lot, great hardy fish. I have three of them and they are the three stooges.

      I thought they all were that peaceful but if you read some of the other comments some people have had opposite experiences! Thanks for watching!

      They are not so peaceful
      My tinfoil barb killed my goldfish at his young age
      But i have seen that as he kept getting old his aggressiveness reduced quite a lot
      Now he is very peaceful
      So peaceful that my tiger barb kept chasing and nipping his fins
      I needed to seperate the tiger barb

    • @seanearly54321
      @seanearly54321 8 лет назад

      Not that big, but big enough to eat a large mosquito fish, they really hunt them down chasing them all around the tank

      My two albino eaten about eight zebradino ! so now i feed them little but 3 to 4 times from morning to till night and they are growing speedily ! one is about 7 inches ! other one is looking bit smaller.
      they are living happy in 1.2x4 feet tank with,
      1 blue line shark
      2 shabunkin
      2 golden barbs
      2 gold fish
      2 tetra fish
      1 rainbow shark
      1 diamond koi
      1 high fin koi
      4 silver corps
      previously 4 tiger barb were also living with them but when their size start increasing i feel that tiger barbs started taking side from Tinfoil and sometime try to hide !
      now i am planning to make separate big tank for them about 2.5x6.5 feet and then i would like to keep pair of kids/small sizes Oscar, Gouramy and Parrot fish, Bala Shark and possible with them disk fish ! is that will be fine ?
