How to Spray Metal Flakes

  • Spraying metal flakes is quite a simple process as long as you follow a few key points you should have no problems achieving good results.
There are a few different methods that will end in similar finishes, some like to mix the flakes with 2k clear then apply more clear over the top but I prefer to mix the flakes wit an intercoat (clear basecoat), the reason I prefer to do it this way is because the intercoat dries quicker and makes it easier to bury those flakes in a few wet coats of a good quality HS clear.
The next step is to let that 2k clear dry out as long as possible, a bake is recommended with infrared curing lights if possible, then once it is cured we will give it a flow coat and the job is done.'
This video is for demonstration purposes only and I am using DNA Custom Paints 200 Micron Holographic Flakes one panel over a silver base and one over black to give you an idea of the different finishes you can get, don't forget that with custom paint you are limited by your imagination so get inventive, the same basic process applies for most brands and size of flakes however if you are using monster flakes then you may want to try using a flake gun that you can see me using in this video.. thegunman.net.a...

I love spraying large metal flakes. Sometimes I mix them with interclear and spray over jet black and other times I mix them with kandy paint and spray over metallic bases. The combinations are endless and with my bench rifle stocks I make and paint it is fun to come up with colors for a customer so he can go to a match with a paint job no other bench rifle there will have

Since watching your videos I've started painting anything i can and when i feel i have it right, I will do the black base silver marble effect and then candy blue. Yep its a big ask but you make it sound possible and the tests i've done so far are pretty good. So thanks for the videos, you rock.

Sifon feed gun is lot better than a gravity feed as well as putting a couple marbles in the sifon feed gun for stirring every pass or so to keep the flake suspended other wise it it start to settle at the bottom of the cup I've done a lot of flake jobs on bikes and cars ..
But your doing a good job with the gravity feed gun I've seen some where the flake settled in the gun and can out as blotchy patches were there was more flake in one spot than another..
I done a few with just a light dusting so there in not as much flake just the odd one here and there type thing just to add a little sparkle to the paint job so the looking at it from about 2 meters back it has a nice touch off the odd color red, green, etc. Rainbow flakes I've even used on my outdoor patio table on top of gold flake.
Myself I use the biggest flake and don't sand through when sanding and u use a block wet sanding becouse with the rubber block I use it as a squeeze and pull the water aside to see where I'm at but then there are usually a few different colors and I don't like to have edge's between the colors ...
Would be nice to show your test panels in the sunlight for the real effect like the speed boats sparkling.

Heya Gunman, I’m really enjoying these videos! I’ve taken your advice and I’ve got out into the shed to paint some shit! First project was a guitar I’m making. Painted in hi opacity white from Concept Paints. Then covered in silver ghost flake, some pearl gold graphics then clear. Waiting now for a couple of weeks to sand the whole shebang before I flowcoat. Really happy so far, laughed at your comments about the panels looking like you’d thrown a handful of sand on them. That’s exactly what I said!!! Cheers 👍🏼

That black flake panel is bloody beautiful! I've been debating doing the bottom bit of my car in black; now I think I may have to see about getting some of that DNA flake!
I recently lost about half the vision in my right eye, so I'm not sure if it's me or if the camera is just having trouble picking up the subtlety of the silver panel, but it didn't seem to "pop" quite as much as the black did.
You'd mentioned that some of the clearcoats you've used have had a yellow tint to them. I've found in the past--at least with rattle cans--that you can use that to your advantage. I've intentionally tinted clearcoats with yellow to bring out a lot more depth when finishing certain colors; particularly green metallics that are a bit more on the warm side. I've also done a lightly blue-tinted clearcoat over both black and dark metallic gray, which created quite a fascinating result. A friend of mine called it "Electric Gunmetal." You couldn't see the blue tint unless you were really looking for it, but the way the basecoat reflected was wild. :D

This is why a siphon feed gun is better for flakes...because with an HVLP , every time you rest between coats, the flakes settle into the gun and can't be stirred back up into the cup. So every time you resume spraying, your first trigger pull is loaded with more flake than the following strokes have. You would be better off pointing the gun away from the work and pulling the trigger to clear the gun and then resuming immediately. BTW, use ball bearings in a siphon feed gun for flakes...just like cans of spray paint have.

Hi Gunman, brilliant videos, many thanks for taking so much trouble!
Maybe a completely stupid question but: at around the 10 minute mark in the video, you mentioned that you lay one coat of clear down, wait 10 minutes, and then spray the next coat. What do you do with the gun in the meantime? Do you just leave the mixed up paint in the gun and start spraying again, or do you empty the cup, clean the nozzle with thinners?

hey gunman... id sure love to have your advice.... im looking at a tricoat paint system with black ground coat with "spectraflair bright silver 20" flakes at 20 microns size (not the holographic version) mixed in the mid coat (possibly tinted) or also considering "PPG Vibrance - Crystallance (TM) Silver VM4501" at 80 microns size. whats nice about these smaller flakes i can use a 1.4mm to tip. is it difficult to spray like a candy? do we have to spray precisely like robot like you do for candies?
again im not after holographic color shifting, just the intense silver sparkle these two choices achieve. in the states we have a GM color code called "black diamond", that one uses the "spectraflair flake" (developed by fiber an optics company from silicone valley) and another color code in ppg products only color called "mystique", both are black tri -coats with that intense silver sparkle im after, any experience with any of these flakes or any tips or this type of color? love your show...

Love the gunman videos. He is a true master in his art. Love the fact he is not afraid to admit his limitations and teaches us from his mistakes. Perfection every time is nearly impossible. Your videos have really helped me understand car paint. As in prime base and clears, and how to apply them properly. I know you have a lot of videos and I'm just catching up but could you put some of your gun settings in your videos. I'm fairly familiar now but would have help me a lot if I had a better idea on air and material feed

Hey! I was wondering if anyone knows how this would work for a guitar! I want a sparkly purple guitar and don't know the best way to achieve that finish
