Not only is Henry a force of nature, he's a humble, well-targeted, well-educated force of nature. This is an amazing tale, and thanks to the person who captured it and uploaded it.
Hes been a tool his whole life, sold an image of being a hard and angry individual his whole life to sell his "punk" image. He was born likely in the suburbs to a well off jewish family, hes been an egotistical cockhead his whole life to sell his bs to people like you. He is still doing it, but this time without actually making music and just selling these stupid talk where he dropped his act to gullible people like you. Truth is painful sometimes
All the comments about Bowie and Lou Reed apply to Henry himself. I've seen him a few times. He is turned on all the time. He is an inspiration. He wants to share music, life experience, sadness, tragedy, and ultimately love. Henry is an amazing human being and the world will be a darker place when he leaves
Bowie was such a nexus for art. From his choice of musicians to the diversity of performers he worked with he showed a lot of things I would have never heard of.
This is truly great. Henry has done more in his life than most do in 600 lifetimes. His enthusiasm is super infectious. Lesson to the kids. Don't drink or do drugs and you can be this this amazing at 60
There used to be a video on You Tube of a Rollins performance at Town Hall in NYC and if you look carefully at the crowd reaction shots you'll see Bowie in the audience, enjoying himself.
“People are so f*cking dumb. Nobody reads anymore, nobody goes out and looks and explores the society and culture they were brought up in. People have attention spans of five seconds and as much depth as a glass of water.” David Bowie.
So cool. I knew Bowie was a musical genius. But I didn't know what a great musician he was until I saw him at the Palladium in Hollywood with Tin Machine. I got to be front and center with him right above me! I couldn't believe it then and I still can't.
I found this very inspiring and it does seem a wedge against mediocrity, brutality and the sameness of life. It really makes me see art of all types as opportunities for growth and recharging the internal battery that makes life worth living. I really need to do more, see more and experience more. This little talk was a gift, thanks you Henry and by proxy, thank you David!
Thank you for this. Sometimes we forget to dig for the beautiful creations around us because we're tired. I think the exhaustion comes from a world fascinated w fear and terror. David was right. We should enjoy ourselves w the myriad of experiences accessible to us. Maybe good, healthy energy awaits us. ❤
I think there are too many folks out there who don't have that "switched on' friend. It can be difficult to be curious if you don't know what to be curious about.
I really hope he's right, that we're experiencing a transition, witnessing the last dying gasps of a generation furiously trying to stop the world from changing in a way that makes life better for everyone, not just the select few.
The sad part is that generation brought a lot of backwards people into the world and those younger people brought even more backwards people into the world. Good thing people can change and bigotry is typically not accepted by society at large, especially the younger generations.
I could listen to Henry all day everyday. I love his take on the current situation " We are in transition. Pasty old white guys are dying" I've told people something similar. It the death throws of the old order. Pulling out the classics. Fear racism etc mistrust etc etc. moving to a more representative govt for all of America. I have hope.
As a pasty old white guy I can confirm Henry is correct and I am as enthusiastic a s him that the young men and women will change all of what we've tried to destroy.
!!!spot on. History learn don't absolutely believe. His specials of history were AWESOME! I'm from Delmarva, D.C. area mostly. My father lit a historical fire in me. This dude who was punk rocking...was written off by me,not for long. Words of his are DEEP.
@@block-head2982 Sorry for the confusion I put them for emphasis as they are one of my favourite bands. I can see how it could be read as irony though. Not my intention.
That was my uncle he met! His name was David Boland and he looked exactly like Bowie. He had a crush on Henry.Pity Henry wasn't gay back then like my old gay Uncle
"Ancient pasty white people are gonna die, and we will be ok." He'd get his as beat by inner city teenager thugs and say "'Please forgive me, you are the future I love you."
I was almost enjoying his David Bowie story when he went down this vortex-of-stupid and reaffirmed my long-held belief that he really is a moron. Most or all of the Bowie story is surely BS.
Henry has been my Hero ever since I found out that his stereo speakers are worth $250,000! You HAVE TO respect the musical opinions of a guy THAT dedicated to Music.
Henry was always hyped up. When he first came to LA and started bouncing for Blackflag he had that energy. Unfortunately combined with his young teenage years he was a misogynistic, racist, strung out, irritating, annoying POS. Glad he turned his life around and started using his powers for good, not evil.
Not only is Henry a force of nature, he's a humble, well-targeted, well-educated force of nature. This is an amazing tale, and thanks to the person who captured it and uploaded it.
I think you just wrote the promoter's spiel for Henry's next speaking tour.

I'm in my 60s and I still can't wrap my head around how the young, cocky Rollins became such a compassionate and wise man. Good on him.
We were all young and cocky in the 80's. What's interesting is how much the young people I read on here absolutely hate that attitude nowadays.
Face it, the world just got darker and less colorful when Bowie left.
And Prince
And Dumbledoor
@bbbro34 Bowie had been utterly irrelevant for over 30 years by the time he died.
He was still relevant to some people, maybe not in a mainstream type of way really.
He went home & we still believe he was nothing more than one of us...

Bowie loved us to life with his love of life.
😊🎸🎵 Henry Rollins never ceases to amaze.
Henry, YOU are a GIFT on inspiration!!! Always love listening to you! 😊👍
David Bowie was the very definition of cool...
Yeah, Never Let Me Down was so great, right? 😆 🤣 😂
Henry is a cool guy. He was nice enough to respond to my email i sent him in high school (about 10 years ago).
He was nice enough to be a pen pal to me in the 80’s and was just as curious and kind with advice

'Gift machines for each other'. Love it. So glad that I've had so many 'gift machines' in my life.
What a great story!
Henry is a genuine person! And black flag rocks
Same old stories .. Hank is such a ham at this stage
What a nice guy, inspiring talk!

It okay
Bowie or David Jones, a man in love with Life.❤
Fantastic !! A+ Henry
“People are so f*cking dumb. Nobody reads anymore, nobody goes out and looks and explores the society and culture they were brought up in. People have attention spans of five seconds and as much depth as a glass of water.” David Bowie.
WHat an awesome story, to meet Bowie and realize he is also a fan of Henry Rollins !
I wish more people would age like Rollins.
Not much in life can top lunch with Bowie
How do you figure? He was just a musician and hadn't made a good record since Scary Monsters.
what makes good record good?@@docsavage8640
Doing coke with Bowie while he was making Station to Station would top lunch.
4:00 damn, bowie was a rare human being..
Perpetual gift machines for one another
Is there a longer version from this excellent Henry Rollins talk?
I can listen to these stories ALL Day! Wonderful! ❤❤
Good stories thank Henry
David added to or changed millions of lives. A life very well lived.
Word
He even made good records for about a decade.
@@docsavage8640 or four… bitchy-features, and no doubt, he was harder on himself than you are.
Saw Rollins Band in 91 in Toronto it was one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Fave tune is Ghost Rider odd as that may seem!
I guess Bowie loved living instead of sitting around
Almost as much as he loved cocaine.
@@docsavage8640Oy! Respect now, he got completely clean before his (likely coke and cigarette fueled) death!
This is everything I needed to hear right now! Thank you!

That truly does sound the best!! Incredible man!!
I saw this tour in MA, awesome.
Good old Henry. I love his radio show.
Henry Rollins: giant brain, giant heart, giant inspiration.
this is great! 👍
Cool George what a great Q&A.
Great story.
Good stuff, keep it up
Henry Rollings talking about himself and Bowie was kinda involved too.
Whoa! Henry said nice things about two people in less than ten minutes!
I like his little piece about Mark E Smith too
Rollins is turning into the yock version of Larry David!
I love big names that are shameless fanboys, it’s beautiful when they tell stories like that.
Rollins is my big brother, music filled that void of not having a real family.
Watch Henry’s special Keep Talking, Pal. It contains the best version of his meeting Bowie story, though this one contains more of their conversation
By all accounts David Bowie was the nicest fucking guy... great story...
LOL! Briliant! 😄
well said ending...
Henry has no idea what a legend he himself is. David knew it. I hope Henry never learns. Heh
Did Rollins make up his name? For he is ROLLIN' and we're happy to come along for the ride.
His given name is Henry Garfield
Perpetual gift machines ... works for me!
I can’t find the video where he talks about meeting Beethoven in Vienna.
The world became a poorer place when David Bowie left us and went back to his home galaxy.
David is on Centurion 5 now
Good one (Henry too)!

I need someone to look up to like Lou Reed, David Bowie, Moby, Henry Rollins to help me discover some more culture that I can't afford
I think I get that people are basically 12 year olds. Not in a bad way.❤hm wonder if Henry has anything to say about Iggy.

“Pasty old white guys”. Ageist, racist and sexist in such a short space. Thank god Bowie and Reed don’t fall into that category.

I love Rollins but I think he needs to speak to breathe. Damn he didn’t come up for air.
Might not get around like Bowie did but perhaps couch potato resting helps Henry be a hot looking 62 y.o.
