  • Hi Nators!
Here's another video where I bring across my opinion about Geology Job Opportunities in South Africa. It is so sad to see so many unemployed Geology graduates in South Africa, many eventually decide to work as something else other than what they studied because there are no job opportunities. Does this mean the career is dead? Should people stop studying Geology if the job opportunities are limited? What should industries and tertiary institutions do to solve this problem?
On this video I discuss the different streams that we can dive into; Mining Geology, Environmental Geology (Consulting companies), Geo-hydrology, Agriculture, Financial Institutions such as Nedbank Graduate Programmes, Engineering Geology, Rock Mechanics and Economic Geology. I hope you enjoy watching and please comment below!

MY ANSWER TO THAT IS SIMPLE:
I think that the mistake made by many is that they forget that the demand of an expertise depends on the country you are in. The relevance of what one studies, depends on the geolocation. Geology demands might not be high is South Africa but it surely is in many countries up Africa or overseas. The degree you choose must be LINKED to the future you plan and NOT the way around.
I see the same problem with students graduating in Mechatronics who end up working as developers or heavy current Electrical Engineer at Eskom or other firms, which have nothing to do with robotics that they studied for..It's not a matter of cancelling the Mechatronics degree, it's just that the South African market does not have a lot of opening and demand for that field, but if their plans was to go to the US or China for instance, then that degree becomes MUCH more relevant.
When it comes to Geology in SA, that market could be considered as small and saturated, compared to others.

    Yo Sbudanator!
This video is so cool! For me, it's not a loss of hope for budding geologists, but a reality check on how the field of study and it's industrial demands and changing and developing, and the best thing about it is that the essential skills are being addressed; what investors and employers look for in graduates and potential colleagues. You are awesome for empowering students and your fellow geologists . I'm a student from Namibia, pursuing a BSc in Environmental sciences at NWU, majoring in Geology and Chemistry, and there the intake of new students is already limited due to a reduction in the demand and interest in the field of study. In my opinion, nothing one does is a waste if you learn how to use it systemically i.e. the whole world is covered in discoverable opportunities.
Keep on and keep strong bafethu!

I agree with you. I am a Geology graduate and an intern pursuing MSc in mining engineering. The geology field has limited opportunities and growth, especially in the mines. There are other industries like government, finance institutions, etc, there is no need for despair.
The advice that I would give Geology students is that they should diversify their portfolios and be open to switching to other streams like engineering, computer or finance.

The best we can all do now is to major in courses that are in demand, I think I’ll carry on with civil and major in storm water and or project management. We do not have an investor-friendly economy because of the government's policies. So, exploration is based on high risk but expected return on the scale of 10 to 20 years. Investors do not have a stable outlook for the future in that timeframe, so are not investing in exploration, the nucleus of the mining industry.

The best thing to do is get all the expriance you can get and go outside for better opportunities. be confidant in your self and do as much research as possible you will make it. also look into oil and gas. yeah its weird...!
in the high school i love engineering so much such as mechanical, aeronautics, process, electrical, and many others kinds of engineering, and i like programming or coding too
when i decide to go to university, i choose geological engineering as my major coz i just wandering learn about this kind of engineering major.
but at the first month, its makes me pissed of, this is not the real kinds of engineering major and my lecturer say so, this makes me suprised. and we dont have any calculus class or advance physics class in here (so weird right?), its makes me depressed all over time coz i took gap year for preparing and learn about calculus and expert physics, but its look useless :(
i saw many of you learn about planetary science in geology, but we dont have this in our country
i tried my best to learn about my major but its really hard for me, coz since the high school i never learn about earth science any more, so this major looks very difficult for me, and i got low GPA in university and get depressed,
i feel guitly coz i didnt have any information about this major before i decide to go to university,
this is my regret and i just blame my self not my major :(
i think our universities officials dont know what the meaning of engineering major is, and its made me suck
fyi here in my country, geophysics is kind of engineering
