    I made it to purple ranks. Honestly I’m super happy where I’m at, this is the first Tekken I’ve taken time to learn and be “competitive”at since the first Tekken Tag which was 20+ years ago. My original goal was red and once I got there it was definitely tough. I demoted to orange a few times but once I got to Shinryu I made it to Tenryu right away which surprised me. Then I said F it and went for purple and got there. If I want to get to blue I know I need to learn a lot more matchups/situations, work on my neutral and spacing, and especially work on my defense.

    It’s not that frames don’t matter , it’s that you are reading and conditioning your opponent in a match. If you are playing against someone and you hit them with an attack that gives you negative frames , and attack afterwards , you are attacking because you are making a prediction that the opponent is going to do a move that you can crush or stop with a faster frame move , even though you are at negative frames. Or if you have conditioned the opponent to be afraid to attack even after you’ve hit them with a negative frame attack , then you can bully them with more unsafe moves or negative moves until they respond to them. Frames always matter but it is a gauge.

Without watching the rest of the video, I think of how my character's low leads into a frame trap, but people beat it by using a move that, while technically not as fast, evades the next hit and wins. We have a similar thought process when fighting!! I agreed with everything you said. Especially your one comment to someone about how it's great sometimes to use plus frames to do nothing and using minus frames to do something.
    My play style is more about constantly taking risks with my Bryan giving the impression to them that I am good but they are "better" than me. Soon as they feel like they got the win in the bag I switch my play style up back and forth between being super risky to being super safe.

  • @BigDaddyWes

    You can still beat good players by hell sweeping all of the time. You gotta keep in mind that they probably aren't going to expect you to do something so risky every chance you get and you can really catch people off guard with the "no mix up mix up." It really just depends on who you're up against. Any tendency and patterns in your play can be advantageous or harmful depending on how your opponent responds. That's the dance.

    I’m like a low-mid level player so take this with a huge grain of salt but I think “don’t care about frame data” is a disservice to learners. I would say a better way to actually progress is to learn the fundamentals of characters’ frame data (what’s plus? what’s launch punishable? Etc) and THEN realize how irrelevant it is and throw it out the window. Like English professors say: *know the rules to break the rules.* The simple reality of mental stack means that knowing frame data will never mean as much in practice as it does in theory, but I still think it’s a mistake to deemphasize it to the extent suggested in this video - even taking into account it being self aware about being hyperbolic.
    Same with combos, honestly. Everyone says “don’t focus on combos in Tekken, combos are overrated” and that’s true BUT I think someone who labs a ton of combos and then goes “this isn’t really helping me, let me focus on more important stuff” is still going to be in a better place than someone who just totally disregarded combos from the beginning and therefore can barely get 50 damage out of a big read on a counter hit. Even if your combos are nowhere near optimal, that extra 20-30 damage that you get from really seizing an opportunity can make a HUGE difference. I would absolutely argue it’s better to disregard learning combos after you’ve already learned some good stuff you’re able to execute than to disregard it from the beginning.

  • @ahkme6268
    @ahkme6268 2 месяца назад

    what it comes down to is your fundamentals. a vast majority of the time i play people they just smash their face into me and i can outplay that by blocking and just making reads. On a similar train to you i agree frame data shouldn't be the end all be all... but it IS important. For example zafinas scarecrow power crush launcher until now i've only really been punishing it with a 10-13 frame punish when i could have blown it up. Knowing and understanding what you can explode with a launch is generally the most important points of understanding frame data lol.

    Best thing to do is play the characters that give you a hard match up
    I learned how to counter characters by playing them and getting launched lmao now I know when to launch you and all I gotta do is launch you 2 times and I get a dub
    That’s high level tekken because now all I need with any character is to know my 10 13 and 15 frame punish and a combo that does at least 70 damage

  • @rookeyji5177
    @rookeyji5177 4 месяца назад +7

    Kinda disagree with tip 2. Combos are definitely worth learning as it straight up increases your dmg output and punish game. Plus, learning combos will actually let you understand your characters gameplan better. Going for b1 as bryan for example might seem trash to a player with no combos, but once you learn that b1 gives you like 80 dmg off of ch the you start to see the value in not just b1 but bryans ch in general. Also, combos are easy af to practice anyways, much more han fundamentals. Its a very straightforward process and you have no excuse on not learning your combos.

    There are problems that you forgot in tip 3, if the opponent sees you block too much he will mix you up with throws which already is threatning. But there are also moves that are low, but have guaranteed extension if low hits like Steve's stomp, Lili also have something like this I'm certain. And then hellsweeps, some throws and many other moves are scary just because they set up okizeme which is a whole more to talk about. Blocking in T8 is just too risky and you won't have time to download your opponent when you're busy standing up from the ground. It's not that simple as you portray it

    it's incredible effective to do flashy stuff with reina from garyu to above, most people expects my frame attacks like u say,
    at some point unless u start practicing a lot with a character, there's a clear meta currently in game, for example LARS, that bro is naturally stronger,
    with his constant low movement u cant really tell if he's doing lows and mids, same happens with JIN, the mixes up a lot of low attacks,
    with his most basic string he can break ur heat engager over and over.
    being unpredictable and keeping good spacing and all those fudamentals is great,
    but in my opinion, knowing the mach up is much more important, I think most of the people can defeat a kazuya player because everyone practices against kazuya
    in lab while we wait for the matchmaking, sometimes just fudamentals cant win a knowledge check, it's important to slowly learn the other fighters, it's like when
    u fight a mirror match, u dont get hit by the basic stuff, but more because of the fundamental of tekken.
    lots of tekken gods / god of destruction are people who been playing for YEARS tekken and knows the enemies.
    Also, I kinda like being red rank because of the lobby, I do enjoy a more casual experience, people plugs too much on purple ranks.

    Start frames are actually important once you know the moves that are plus or punishable you get better especially your own start up frames, mid level is to know what’s punishable or not movement is for higher rank, you can wave dash and kbd all you want and still lose by being punished, being unpredictable is only when you find out they don’t know the character, your play style makes you unpredictable

I have now just been experimenting with different stuff in matches. Limit pushing and seeing what I can get away with. Or seeing if a certain thing works in a situation. It has made me not climb as much, but I believe it is helping me in the long run.

    This is a good video, I dont know whether I missed it or you didnt mention it, but I wanted to mention that using mixups to condition your opponent to contest you without having to take huge risks afterwards is a thing I commonly dont see a lot of players in fighting games use in general, or things like using pressure resets in more traditional fgs as a way to encourage the opponent to fall for frametraps.

    It's not that you have to forget about the frames ... You have to use the frames to make your opponent respect you first. Anyway most good players will respect the frames.
    Once he knows you are gonna do a frame trap for exemple, he will sidestep, use a powercrush, whathever.
    So you have to adapt to what your opponent will do to counter your trap. For example you do a blockstun attack and then a homing move, if he step he gets hot if he jab you gets hit. It's a mind game.

  • @AngeloGene

    I think knowing the frames IS important. I think the problem is that most people domt know how tonuse them properly.
    Knowing frames does not mean you're a predictable player. I'm a Yoshi main as well and I normally use my frames to be unpredictable.
    Quick and easy example:
    Yoshimitsu's flash is 6 frames fast. That means that leaves yoshi at -4 and above will get flashed. Worst case scenario, it will trade with the opponent's jab but it's still in my favor.
    So... Azucena uses her annoying 'While Running' move. I block it, leaving me in minus frames. She got hit by flash before so my opponent is actually smart enough to actually bait it out. They always stand still though.
    So it's my turn. If I'm sure that they will hold still, I would just use Poison Breath to launch them. xD

    I don't know if I am the only one who goes trough this, but sometimes I feel like I screw myself up by overestimating my opponents. I always assume people on the other side are players who think and try to adapt to their opponent, only to die by the same pattern they did the whole match, some do adapt and crouch and SS and whatnot, most don't however.
    I can't count how many times I played against Law, Dragunov, King, Jun, Jin and many more who do the same stuff over and over again, and worked because I thought they would change their strategy/approach once I SS, blocked or punished. I don't know man, I hate calling my opponents bad and stuff but feels like it has been biting me in the ass when trying to improve. Maybe that's where the frames and predictable stuff comes into play, eating almonds and apples while playing has helped me a bit to focus harder on my opponent lmao.
    While I hate being a garyuer, last year I couldn't even get to teal ranks in 7 so despite all that I feel like I have grown a lot as a player and sometimes feel like I can take on anyone, these kind of games are a marathon not a damn race for sure.

    I disagree with frame traps. I Hit fujin yesterday with asuka and I'm understanding frame data now, knowing what moves I can use to continue my block strings gets you very far bc you can mix up the opponent more, but the difference is you're mashing frame traps, if you use them less your opponent doesn't know your attack pattern so you've rectified the predictability. Jabs hit quicker that most frame traps so even the mashers themselves can't just escape with jabs

    We can agree to disagree but purple rank is not mid, it's high intermediate. And realistically speaking, in rank most people are just gonna comes at you like a mad dog mashing doesnt even care about frames or whatsover.They just want to win. Even players in blue ranks above.No fundamentals, mindgames, can't even punish properly and whiff most of the time. I'm not a believer in high or low level players. Only higher or lower ranks in ranked. Even if you are lower ranks, that doesnt mean you suck. Rank doesnt mean anything anymore, at least in tekken 8. Just my 2 cents. Appreciate the tips anyway.

    I would have phrased the first lesson differently. It should be "don't rely too much on frame traps." As a general rule, you want to play by frames. This means block when you're minus, attack when you're plus. This is good clean Tekken and will get you far. You just don't want to get caught in predictable patterns and frame traps.

    • @nobacktalk
      @nobacktalk  4 месяца назад +4

      imo i disagree. attack when plus and block when minus is something that even red ranks understand-and usually what makes them lose tbh especially vs better players
      plus is when you have initiative, minus is when you have to make predictions. sometimes its good to use plus frames to do nothing and sometimes its good to use minus frames to do something

Sometimes i forget that opponents are almost never respecting my offense which probably comes from guilty gear where my opponents usually adapt to frame traps.
